DAAD Summer School - Society and Conflict in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan Date: July 4 July 14, 2013 Location:

: Dushanbe, Tajikistan Participating Institutions: Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD, sponsor), Humboldt University Berlin (Germany), Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan Project Managers: Dr. Alexander Wolters (alexanderwolters13@googlemail.com) and Dr. Philipp Schrder (schroeder.pm@gmail.com) Summer School Description In Central Asia, during the last two decades, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan were the nation-states which have been most affected by violent conflict and political turmoil. In this regard, the so called 2010events in southern Kyrgyzstan were generally labelled as an inter-ethnic conflict between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks, whereas in Tajikistan's civil war (1992-1997) the lines of conflict seemed rather to run along regional and religious affiliations. Assuming that recent developments in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan cannot be understood through essentializing catchwords or quick judgements, the question is: how exactly do different ethnic belongings, religious attitudes, regional origins or other influences relate to the stability or fragility of a society? Starting from this question, our Summer School aims to bring together students and scholars of the social sciences and humanities from universities in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Germany. The main aim of the Summer School will be to examine the multiple relations between society and conflict in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, as well as to train our students' practical research skills. The first part of the Summer School will be dedicated to different theoretical and methodological approaches regarding the interplay of ethnic, religious and other identities with questions of peace and conflict. This introduction will enable our students to design their own small field-studies, which they will carry out during the second part of the Summer School in order to practice interview-techniques and other ethnographic tools, such as participatory observation. Application Requirements The Summer School is designed for students of the social sciences and humanities, especially for students of sociology, anthropology, international relations and history.
