the Tissue Cell Salts No 1

Calcium fluoride (Tissue Salt No 1) is present in the cells of the skin, in
the bones, in the toothache and all flexible fibers. To which a lack
leads, as and where one uses it reads you here. . .

is the most important means for the supporting fabric, the salt
for the connective tissue, for joints, bone, skin.

Calcium is contained in the cells of the epidermis, in the enamel of the

teeth, in the bones and in all elastic fibres. A disorder of Calcium
fluoride metabolism results in: elastic tissues become limp, cracked
skin. It is administered in cases of callused skin formations, anal
fissures, dental diseases, limpness of the connective tissue, procidentia
(proiapsed organs), varicous veins, heamorrhoids and arteriosclerosis.
Calcium fluoride hardens the bones.

Major task of Calcium fluoride:

the fabrics protection, elasticity, to give and receive tension and form.

A lack of Calcium fluoride (Tissue Salt No 1) supplies:

- hardening and intensified shortness.

Calcium fluoride (Tissue Salt No 1) works very slowly and must

be taken during a long period.

Calcium phosphate - stabilization means

of the Tissue Cell Salts No 2
Calcium phosphate (Tissue Salt No 2) is contained, predominantly
however in all body cells in the bone cells. To which a lack leads, read
here. . .

is the most important means for teeth and bones, affects the
fabric and the body fluids within the cells.

Calcium phosphate is contained in all body cells, predominantly in the

bone cells. It plays the main role of all rebuilding processes that take
place in the body. Its deficiency therefore causes disorders in the
processes of restoration and construction. The area of applicaton is.-
Disruptions to the tooth and bone structure (infantile osteomalacia or
rickets), badly healing fractures. In combination with Sodium chloride
(No. 8) it is furthermore the remedy for convalescence (period
between the end of a disease and the restoration to complete health).

Most important structure means in biochemistry and a proven nerve

calming and strengthening means. It affects the cell regeneration and
new formation. With weakness conditions, after serious illness, it
normalizes the muscle tension, promotes the blood formation and the
healing of a wound.

Potassium chloride - mucous membrane

means of the Tissue Cell Salts No 4
This phase is characterized by heavily separating isolations,
inflammatory swelling of the tissue and lymph nodes. It is an important
decontamination agent.

is the means for the second inflammation phase after Ferrum

phosphoricum, a classical mucous membrane means.

Potassium chloride is a component of almost every cell in the body and

stands in connection vvith the fibrous substance (connective tissue). lt
is the main remedy for infections in their second stage. lt is
administerd when the tongue shows a whitish grey coating, in cases of
tonsillitis, pneumonia, pleurisy, measles, scarlet fever, mumps, colds,
hoarseness, whooping cough, middle ear catarrh, conjunctivitis,
articular swelling and tenosynovitis.

A lack of Potassium chloride (Tissue Salt No 4) applies:

Potassium phosphate - nerve means and

muscle means of the Tissue Cell Salts
No 5
It supports the metabolism of the cells and strengthens with it during
physical and mental exhaustion.
is the most important salt for the nerves and the mind.

Potassium phosphate is contained in all brain cells, the nerves, the

muscle cells, the blood corpuscles and in the blood- and tissue plasma.
A deficiency of this mineral reduces physical, mental and spiritual
abilities. lt is also a nutrient for neurasthenia, insomnia, conditions of
physical and psychological exhaustion, lack of memory, weakness of
Ihe heart, muscular weakness and sensation of paralysis.

A lack of Potassium chloride (Tissue Salt No 5) applies:

Potassium sulphate - skin means of the

Tissue Salts No 6
Potassium sulphate is contained in the epedermic cells and in the
muscles, often together with iron. Its deficiency causes repulsions of
cells and skin. Potassium sulfate is the remedy of the third stage of
inflammation, catarrhs with yellowish mucous secretion for example,
rhinitis (yellowish secretion), discharge from the ear; it promotes the
scaling of the skin after measles, scarlet fever and rubella.

supports the decontamination.

Magnesia phosphate - nerve means of the

Tissue Salts No 7
Besite Calcium phosphate (Tissue Cell Salts No 2) Magnesia phosphate
belongs to the most important cousin-forming mineral materials and
can work against an overacidification. Therefore it is an important basis
means for prevention and for the treatment of chronic illnesses.

is the classical means against cramps and pain.

Magnesium phosphate is contained in the muscles, blood cells and
nerves, brain and spinal marrow, in bones and teeth. Its deficiency
results in culvusions of all kind such as, convulsions of the heart, sto-
mach, urinary bladder, the calves and so forth andcauses like a flash
firing, changing and wandering pains. Furthermore, it is administered
in cases of gastro intestinal colics, and colics of the gallbladder and
kidneys.

A lack of Magnesium phosphate (Tissue Salt No 7)

supplies:

Sodium chloride - irrigation means of the

Tissue Cell Salts No 8
It adjusts the liquid and heat balance and has large purchase to the
mucous membranes, the elimination organs and is important for all
tissues with low floating such as cartilages, volume disks and eyepiece.

is the mineral salt for the liquid household.

Sodium chloride is contained in all body fluids and tissues. lt regulates

the absorption and excretion of fluids of the cells. Disorders of the fluid
metabolism show as a sensation of feeling cold along the spine, on
hands and feet, a watery and puffed up face. lt is the mineral in cases
of anaemia, involuntary flow of tears and excess saliva, watery rhinal
catarrhs and rashes with blisters.

A lack of Sodium chloride (Tissue Salt No 8) supplies:

Sodium phosphate - neutralizing means of

the Tissue Cell Salts No 9
It supports the burn processes and energizes the metabolism. Because
it works alkalinely, it binds for acid and provides thus for a
reconciliation. By overacidification in the nutrition many humans have
sodium phosphoricum lack. Thus it comes to the classical
overacidification diseases.

is the classical salt for the metabolism.

Sodium phosphate is a component of blood cells, the muscles, the

nerve and brain cells as well as the tissue fluid. Dr Schuessler
regarded this mineral as very important: in the carbonic acid exchange
function of the blood in the lungs, in making uric acid soluble in the
blood, in the process of breaking down fatty acids after consuming too
much fat and in the excessive production of lactic acid. lt is
furthermore the remedy in cases of rheumatism, sciatica, kidney
infections and after too fatty foods.

Sodium sulphate - elimination means of

the Tissue Cell Salts No 10
It helps to adjust body fluids, it supports the elimination procedures
and is therefore the most important means for decontamination and
removal of slag.

The function and regeneration of the elimination organs affects such as

liver, gallbladder, blister, large intestine, kidney.

is the salt for the elimination.

Sodium sulphate has the ability of quickly excreting excessive tissue

fluid accumulated with metabolic wastes, from the body. This
nutritional mineral increases the activity of kidneys and urinary
bladder, influences the bowel activity, especially the large intestine,
the liver and pancreas. It is used in cases of rhinitis, influenza, build-up
of bile, liver problems, constipation, diarrhea, rheumatism, ulcers on
the lower legs, kidney sand and dietary mistakes
Silicea - Silica - stabilisation means of the
Tissue Cell Salts No 11
Silicea particularly stands for the structure of the connective tissue,
skin, hair, nails, bones, glands, muscles, chords and nerves. It
promotes the mechanical firmness of the cells and increases its
strength. A lack leads to slackening. In biochemistry it is used gladly
for the "taper ratio".

Silicea is the salt for hair, skin and connective tissue

Silica is a component of the connective tissue, the epidermis, the

mucous membrane, the hair, nails, the bones and nerves. Silica
provides the tissues with hold, firmness and resistance. Its deficiency
causes a worsening of the physical condition, exhaustion,
undernourishment and early aging. It is used in cases of furuncles,
fistulas, glandular septicemia, calcification of the arteries, dental
ulcers, sty, bunion, itching skin, hair loss

Also vegetative symptoms like extreme schreckhaftigkeit or excessive

sensitivity in relation to light and noises can refer to a Silicea lack.

Silicea - Silica (Tissue Salt No 11) is used also with furuncles,

suppuration of adenoids and calcification of the arteries.

Calcium sulphate - regeneration means of

the Tissue Cell Salts No 12
It clarifies the Lymphe, supports the elimination of the dismantling
products and decreases deposits of harmful materials in the organism.

Calcium sulfate is contained in the gall and in the liver. lt is used today
in cases of suppurations and abcesses, rachitis, kidney and urinary
tract infections. On theoretical reflection, Dr Schuessier no longer used
No. 12 during the last years of his life. However modern research has
shown that his original uses for this mineral were correct.

is the most important cleaning agent and regeneration means

It has a special effect on the skin, the mucous membranes and the
glands. It affects entzuendungshemmend, solving, separating and
cleaning the mucous membranes, particularly with all festering
processes, if a discharge is present. It energizes the metabolism, the
new formation of the cells and promotes the healing.

A lack of Calcium sulphate (Tissue Salt No 12) supplies:

WHAT ARE CELL SALTS

Cell Salts are a group of homeopathic remedies made from minerals.
2 words: Cell - meaning used on the cellular level and Salts - meaning
mineral or minerals salts. Made as a homeopathic remedy generally 6X potency.
For information on potency see FAQ's on Potency.
There are 12 basic mineral or tissue cell salts in our bodies.
Just starting in homeopathy? Start with the Cell Salts.
Stubborn health condition? Add Cell Salts to your health plan.
Wanting faster results? Use the Cell Salt that matches your symptoms.
Any health ailments can benefit from Cell Salts. How is that possible? Read on--
Biochemistry is a science developed by Dr. Schussler to show how Cell Salts
are utilized in the body. Cell Salts are not measured like supplements such as
500 mg or more, but are in minute homeopathic potency. In homeopathic potency,
Cell Salts balance the mineral in the body and help the body's utilization of the
mineral from concentrations in the blood and minerals from food and supplements.

Cell Salts are safe for those with digestive problems. Cell Salts do not have binders
and since they dissolve in the mouth they do not need to be broken down in the
stomach. The Cell Salts are a wonderful way to help the body take up nutrients.

Kathryn Jones, BA DiHom Health Counselor, feels the Cell Salts

are the best way to become introduced to Homeopathy. Great way to
see the benefits of homeopathy and the homeopathy works for you.
Minerals in homeopathic potency are quite an advantage over supplemental
forms. Here are some basic benefits of homeopathic minerals/ Cell Salts:
1) Immediately absorbed through the first line of digestion-the saliva.
2) Without the need for the body to break down the minerals, they are effective for
those with digestive problems, as well as young, elderly or severe health conditions.
3) Safety because Cell Salts do not have additives or binders that stress the liver,
and potenization eliminates the questions of getting too much, avoiding
problems, such as bowel tolerance that cause diarrhea (seen with supplemental
magnesium), or constipation (associated with iron supplements).
4) Enables more efficient use of that mineral in the body, whether from a food
source or from supplements. Cell Salts are not a substitute for a balanced diet
or supplements, but improve absorption and utilization of that mineral.

WHY ARE CELL SALTS ESSENTIAL?

Because minerals are the foundation for enzyme activity in the body and serve
as catalysts in energy cycles and functions.
For example, the body must first have minerals to make vitamins or make use
of vitamins regardless of the source. Cell Salts are used in the basic
functioning of the cells including water balance, digestion, removing toxins,
elasticity of the cells, oxygenation, nutrition, sodium/potassium balance etc.

Silicea is the hair and skin remedy. Deficiency includes excess perspiration,
unhealthy skin, brittle nails and hair.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
For additional explanation of how Cell Salts help us absorb minerals
look at magnetic principles. I like to use the following illustration: Just as a
north pole magnet repels another north pole magnet; a like homeopathic
medicine will repel a like vibrational illness in the body. Once the imbalance
is thrown out, the body can heal itself. New studies verify that homeopathics
do indeed carry a vibration with them. In magnetism a like pole repels a like pole.
But a weak like pole can also be regenerated by a like pole.
Likewise, cell salts help to strengthen their like fields in our bodies.
To encourage this regeneration, Cell Salts are taken at low potencies.
Information on SPECIFIC Cell Salts:
Calcium Phosphate is the #1 mineral for bones. Important support for growing pains in
youth. This Cell Salt helps with absorbtion of Calcium.
Helps solve the problem of hard to dissolve supplements and high Calcium blood levels,
but low Calcium in the cells. Homeopathic Cell Salts are the ideal solution and so easy to
take. Also remember for numbness in extremities, painful joints, tooth decay problems.
Symptoms aggravated by cold, damp weather, stress.

Calcium Sulphate are same names for the important Cell Salt or Tissue Salt found in the
liver.
Calc Sulph is known as a blood purifier. Helps with cleansing toxins in the body. In the
liver it helps in the removal of wastes. Indicated for abscesses, wounds and acne
problems that don't heal. Taken in early stages of colds and sore throats to prevent
illnesses from worsening. Deficiency symptoms of Calc Sulph can be negativity, apathy,
poor skin, teeth, swollen glands. Calc Sulp resembles Hepar Sulph, but acts deeper and
can be used after Hepar Sulph.
Magnesium Phosphate is found inside the cells of muscles, nerves, bones, the brain and
spine. Deficiency affects muscle fibers and nerve endings. This show the wisdon of using
Magnesium Phosphate for muscle spasms in the back, and menstrual and leg cramps.

Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions involving energy and nerve
function. Homeopathic Magnesium Phos goes quickly into the system for prompt relief.
Studies have shown that most adults are deficient in the mineral magnesium. Refined
foods, pollution, non-absorption and insufficient ability of the body to utilize magnesium
in the body are some of the causes. It is especially recommended that diabetics,
individuals with heart disease and those with high blood pressure have their magnesium
levels checked.
Magnesium Phos, especially in low potency 6X, can help your body utilize magnesium in
the body and from food and is completely safe (unlike 500 mg supplements that can
cause bowel overload with resulting diarrhea).
Magnesium is one of the trio including Potassium and Calcium involved in muscle
function. Magnesium deficiency has been linked with CFS, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Consider Magnesium Phosphate when there has been nerve injury or damage. Injury
recovery will benefit from Magnesium Phosphate. Magnesium Phosphate is indicated
when nerve pain is shooting, darting, or spasmodic. Couple this with magnesium's
presence in the brain and you'll see Magnesium Phosphate's importance in neuralgias and
headaches.

Remember Magnesium Phosphate keyword spasmodic, when treating spasmodic coughs

(even hiccups!). Magnesium Phosphorus/Magnesium Phos is the best remedy for muscle
spasms-back, leg, abdomen or calf. Use in the evening for a peaceful night sleep without
charley horses. Relax tight back muscles. Supports intestinal health and beneficial for
abdominal spasms and intestinal problems such as colitis or constipation. Magnesium
Phos calms agitated nerves for pain relief of headache, writers cramp, sciatica, neuralgia.
Use before and after dental work to calm tooth pain. Spasmodic is a key symptom and
Magnesium Phos calms spasmodic coughs, menstrual cramps.
Cell Salts improve the body's ability to absorb Magnesium. If lacking in Magnesium
Phos, nerves are on edge with the inability to relax emotional (showing as anxiety,
nervous disorders, depression) and physically (showing as muscle problems,
fibromyalgia even worse with a light touch, nerve sensitivity-even the skin may feel
overly sensitive).
Deficiency symptoms include stress, pain, anxiety, depression, muscle spasms, migraine
headaches, PMS headaches, agitation, irritability, constipation, fatigue.
Magnesium Phos is the #1 mineral used within the cells for nerve pain. Indicated for
migraines, fatigue, hearing disorders, Meniere's disease, neuralgia, panic attacks.

Kali Phosphate is homeopathic Potassium. Potassium is an important electrolyte and is

crucial for energy. Potassium controls pH balance and water balance. Regulates the
transfer of nutrients into the cells. Potassium supports the adrenals, so is helpful for
stressful times that can overtax the adrenals. Remember Kali Phosphate for mental energy
and for physical energy. If you lack stamina part way through the day, use Kali
Phosphate. Helpful in times of stress that need a clear mind, such as before an exam or
presentation. Kali Phosphate has been called the pick-me-up Cell Salt and #1 stress
remedy. Relax the tensions of the day. Remember Kali Phosphate for the stress of teens
also.

Cell Salt Materia Medica <Back to Top>

The mini-descriptions below include the most common, everyday indications for the use
of the 12 tissue salts, confirmed over a lifetime of using them in my own family and with
my patients. More information can be found in The Twelve Tissue Remedies of Schüssler
by Boericke and Dewey, which includes all of Schüssler’s original indications and also
incorporates symptoms elicited from provings by homeopaths Allen and Hering—thereby
increasing the tissue salts’ homeopathic potential and usefulness.
Dem Dry Bones: Calcarea fluorica
Also known as calcium fluoride.
Affinities: bones, ligaments, muscles, teeth, veins.

This salt is a great tonic for muscles, ligaments and/or veins that have become worn out,
flabby and lax—for tissues that have lost their elasticity and tone. For example, the
prolapsed uterus or bladder (with dragging down sensations), hemorrhoids (that itch and
bleed), or varicose veins.

It is useful for building the health and strength of teeth and bones during childhood, and
after a serious injury to the bones, especially a fracture. It is also helpful for lumps that
develop on bones (after a bad bruise to a bone or a fracture, for example) or around joints
(after a bad sprain).

Use this tissue salt along with Calc phos and/or Silica to help build strong, healthy teeth
and bones in infants, children, or adults, or to increase the strength of those whose enamel
or bones are weak or whose teeth are producing cavities. It is an excellent tissue salt for
bones that are thinning with age (osteoporosis or osteopenia) along with Calc phos and/or
Silica.

Use it for back or joint pains that are worse on beginning to move and better for
continued movement, just like the indications for the homeopathic remedy, Rhus
toxicodendron. If Rhus tox is given but helps just a little or not at all, then Calc fluor will
usually help.
General Tonic: Calcarea phosphorica
Also known as calcium phosphate or phosphate of lime.
Affinities: bones, muscles, teeth.

This is a wonderful tonic for those who are mentally, emotionally, and/or physically
exhausted after a period of mental work (like studying for exams), for those in the
convalescent phase of an illness, or for infants, children, and young adults who are tired
from a growth spurt. (See sidebar on page 21, “Dishrag String Bean Kids,” for more.)

Those responding best to this remedy tend to be sensitive to the cold and to drafts, which
can cause a stiff neck. I have found it to be almost a specific for simple tension in the
neck and trapezius muscles (the triangles between the points of the shoulder and the
neck) from exhaustion or after physical stress and strain.

Use this tissue salt along with Calc fluor and/or Silica to help build strong, healthy teeth
in infants, children, or adults, or to increase the strength of weak enamel or cavity-prone
teeth.

It is also useful for building the health and strength of bones after a fracture—when it can
be given in alternation with Calc fluor and/or Silica.
Yellow, Blood-streaked Stuff: Calcarea sulphurica
Also known as calcium sulphate or gypsum.
Affinities: blood; mucous membranes; skin.

Use this cell salt for boils or abscesses that are discharging but not healing, or for wounds
that have become infected and pus-filled, especially with thick yellow pus that may be
lumpy or blood-streaked. If the complaint looks like it should call for the homeopathic
remedy Hepar sulph, but it does not respond to Hepar, think Calc sulph. It’s easy to
remember this salt if you think of it as “a deeper Hepar.”

Consider Calc sulph for coughs, colds, earaches, and eye infections with discharges that
are thick and yellow. Nasal mucus typically drips down the back of the throat or comes
out one nostril, while the other side is blocked up. Calc sulph is for a croupy cough that is
mostly there only in the morning on waking.
Iron phosphate pentahydrate
Any Old Iron: Ferrum phosphoricum
Also known as ferrum phosphate or phosphate of iron.
Affinities: blood.

This salt is well known to help in the first stage of a fever or an acute illness (e.g., a
cough or cold) before any clearly identifiable symptoms have developed. The person will
be listless with flushed cheeks but no other clear symptoms—for example, you would not
expect to see the restlessness that indicates the need for Aconite or the shiny eyes
pointing to Belladonna.

Alternate Ferrum phos with Calc phos for simple anemia with low energy. The “calcium”
helps the body to absorb the iron more effectively. These are wonderful remedies to give
to pregnant women who are anemic but loath to take medicines for fear of side effects. It
is especially helpful for those who experience constipation and other side effects from
iron supplements.
Think of Ferrum phos for nosebleeds either after an injury or when blowing the nose
during a cough or cold.
White Stuff: Kali muriaticum
Also known as potassium chloride or chloride of potash.
Affinities: mucous membranes.

Think of Kali mur for coughs, stuffy head colds, or sinus infections with white
discharges. The tongue is also coated white; white ulcers or thrush may be present in the
mouth.

This remedy is for earaches, with congestion in the Eustachian tubes so that hearing is
affected. It is brilliant for the snap, crackle, and popping noises in the ears after a cold.
Nerve Tonic: Kali phosphoricum
Also known as potassium phosphate or phosphate of potash
Affinities: nerves.

Use Kali phos for those who are worn out following a heavy work or study period. It is a
good tonic for those in the convalescent stage of an acute illness (especially after flu)
where there is muscular weakness and nervous exhaustion. People who need this remedy
feel better for—and desperately need—warmth and rest, and a healthy diet to build
themselves up again. They feel emotionally sluggish and can become mildly depressed.
They get one-sided headaches and may be sensitive to light and noise, and be easily
startled. They are also mentally sluggish and can’t concentrate even if they try. For
women in childbirth who have become exhausted, I have given Kali phos, one dose in
between every contraction for up to six doses ... and their energy usually starts to return.

This remedy is also lovely for the simple insomnia that follows a period of excitement or
intense work or mental strain, when a person feels worn out but cannot sleep.

Yellow Stuff: Kali sulphuricum

Also known as potassium sulphate or glaserite.
Affinities: mucous membranes; skin.

The indications for this remedy resemble those for Pulsatilla in that people who need it
are generally worse for heat and better for fresh air. They also suffer from thick yellow
discharges with a cough, a cold, or an earache, and the tongue is coated yellow as well.
The coughs are loose but the mucus is difficult to cough up. During an earache, the
person has crackling in the ears when chewing and temporary hearing loss from mucus in
the middle ear.

A change of weather from cold to warm can bring on symptoms—a cough or a cold or
joint pains that move around the body, that are worse for heat and better for a walk in the
fresh air.
Homeopathic Aspirin: Magnesium phosphoricum
Also known as magnesium phosphate.
Affinities: muscles; nerves.

It has been called “the homeopathic aspirin” because of its ability to heal acute pains
anywhere such as earache, headache, toothache (including teething in babies), and even
sciatica—as long as the pains are better for heat and pressure. These are the key
symptoms that will point the way to this remedy. The pains may be “neuralgic” (i.e.,
sharp pains that come and go).

Mag phos will also help cramps anywhere in the body—again, as long as they are better
for heat and pressure. In fact, Mag phos is to painful menstrual periods in women what
Chamomilla is for teething in babies; these remedies help so frequently in such cases
because the symptoms are so common—to the remedy and to those suffering from the
complaint. Mag phos won’t work for all women but it will relieve a significant number
suffering from this miserable complaint. It won’t necessarily cure the problem but it will
provide much appreciated relief—as long as the pains are much better for heat and
pressure—the harder the better. Those needing this remedy can be found lying doubled
up in bed with a hot water bottle (or heating pad) pressed into their crampy abdomens.
Hot baths also relieve the pains.

Mag phos works best when taken in warm water (boiled and partially cooled).
Water Balancer: Natrum muriaticum
Also known as sodium chloride or sea salt.
Affinities: mucous membranes; skin.

The water balance of people needing Nat mur is disturbed. They suffer from dryness: of
the mouth with a correspondingly big thirst; of the lips, which crack (especially the center
of the lower lip); and of the bowels, which become constipated. I have also given it to
pregnant women for simple water retention towards the end of their pregnancies, when
the ankles are puffy but they have no other symptoms and are feeling well overall.

This is an excellent remedy for acute cold sores (herpes) on the lips and around the
mouth, and also for blisters on the tip of the tongue, and/or painful mouth ulcers.
It is indicated in the early stages of a dry cough and for colds with watery or clear but
thick, eggwhite-like mucus.

A person needing this remedy may get back pain that is better for lying on a hard surface
—like the floor.

Any of these symptoms can arise after a significant loss—of a loved one, a job, or a
dream, for example—one that hasn’t been mourned or healed. The person holds in their
tears, and this causes all sorts of problems from headaches to insomnia.

While the herpes and the headaches can come on after emotional stress, they can also be
caused by too much heat, especially the heat of the sun, or by hormonal surges like
around a menstrual period.
Acidity: Natrum phosphoricum
Also known as sodium phosphate or phosphate of soda.
Affinities: stomach; intestines.

Consider this remedy for those with sensitive, disordered digestive tracts. People who
need this remedy cannot tolerate many foods—milk, fats, sweets, or vinegar—which
cause acidity with heartburn, indigestion, and gas. They have acid belchings after eating.
This little remedy is helpful for infants with colic who vomit curdled milk after eating,
and who are sensitive to cow’s milk.

This remedy may be used for itching of the anus due to worms, especially in children.
They may have obstinate constipation or constipation alternating with sour-smelling
diarrhea.

Think of the color yellow when thinking of this remedy! For someone needing this
remedy, the back of the tongue (not the whole tongue) may be coated yellow, and the
discharges are yellow. The eyes weep a yellow, creamy mucus, which causes the lids to
stick together in the morning.Thick yellow mucus may drip down the back of the throat
and be worse at night.
Green Stuff: Natrum sulphuricum
Also known as sodium sulphate or glauber’s salt.
Affinities: head, liver.

This is a fantastic remedy for headaches after an injury to the head—after Arnica has
been given and the swelling has come right down.

People who need Nat sulph are vulnerable to cold, damp weather, or to humidity and they
fall sick with a cough or a cold then. The mucus is green as is the coating on the tongue.

They experience colic, indigestion, and green diarrhea after starchy foods or fruits.
Homeopathic Lancet: Silica
Also known as silica oxide or flint.
Affinities: bones, glands, hair, mucous membranes, nails, skin, teeth.

People needing this remedy tend to be sensitive, chilly, and sweaty types who catch cold
easily. They may have become chilled in a cold wind or draft, or become worn out after a
period of overwork. Either way, they can fall ill with a cough, earache, cold, or sinus
infection. The glands will usually be swollen with an illness.

Hair and nails are weak, thin, and break easily. Teething babies take forever to produce
teeth and get sick with diarrhea, cough, or a cold with every tooth. Silica is also useful for
building the health and strength of bones after a fracture—when it can be given in
alternation with Calc fluor and/or Calc phos.
For boils or abscesses that are painful but not discharging yet, Silica has a reputation as
the “homeopathic lancet” because it hastens the suppuration or pus-formation process.
Give after a splinter has become embedded, and it will help the foreign body to be
“evicted”! It helps with infections and post-surgical scars that are inflamed, painful, and
slow to heal.

Silica may be indicated for constipation with large, hard stools and lots of straining.
Headaches after a heavy period of work or with a sinus infection—that settle over the
eyes and make the forehead feel heavy—may be helped with Silica. This remedy may be
useful for cracked skin anywhere but especially between the toes of sweaty “athletes’
feet.”
How to Take Cell Salts <Back to Top>
• Take the cell salt remedy in a 6X (not the 6c or 30c) potency.
• Repeat the remedy according to the severity of the symptoms:
-Severe: every 1/2 to 1 hour (e.g., high fever, bad pain).
-Moderate: every 2 to 3 hours (e.g., bearable pain, bad cough)
-Mild: every 4 to 6 hours (e.g., able to carry on working!)
-Tonic: 3–4 times daily (e.g., tiredness after flu or osteoporosis, etc.) for 7–10
days at a time. Take a break of a week or so and repeat if need be. Healing after
a bad fracture can take months with tissue salts helping along the way. See also
“alternating remedies” below.
• Stop on improvement: take it less often if there is moderate improvement, and
stop taking it as soon as there is significant improvement.
• Repeat as needed: repeat the same remedy if it helped but then the symptoms
return—starting and stopping as needed until completely better.
• Stop the remedy: if it clearly isn’t working and select another or seek the advice
of a professional homeopath.

Cell salts can be taken dry, on or under the tongue. They can also be dissolved in water if
needed which makes it easy to repeat doses or to give to children or the elderly. Dissolve
4 tablets in 4 ounces of water and stir vigorously. You can take a teaspoon at a time as a
dose, stirring vigorously before each dose, or just sip according to the frequency
directions above.
Alternating remedies
Some tissue salts work well together—like Calc phos and Ferrum phos (for anemia), Calc
phos and Kali phos (after an acute illness), or Calc phos and Mag phos (for cramps and
growing pains in youngsters). Two remedies can be taken on the same day but preferably
not at the same time. The best schedule is to take one cell salt (say Calc phos) on waking
and around mid afternoon and the other one (say Ferrum phos) around mid-day and at
bedtime. Or one cell salt can be taken for a week and then the other for a week. In the
case where three remedies are indicated—like Calc fluor, Calc phos, and Silica for
building bones and/or teeth—one can be taken on waking, the second at mid-day, and the
third at bedtime. Ideally, tissue salts taken this way, should not be taken for long periods
of time without a break. I usually suggest that people take them Mondays to Fridays with
the weekends off, or for two to three weeks and then one week off.
If a person who is sensitive to a particular cell salt takes it for too long, they can make
their current symptoms worse or they may get symptoms they didn’t have before. Taking
breaks from taking the remedy will enable you to spot this particular pattern.
Tissue salt combinations
There are a lot of combinations available—a number of cell salts combined into one
tablet—with most combinations making some sort of sense. Unfortunately, a bone-
building or teeth-building combination with Calc fluor, Calc phos, and Silica is not yet
available. If you feel drawn to a particular combination, do check out the individual
component salts by reading about them in a reference book/materia medica to make sure
they make sense for your particular complaint or complaints.
Caution
Do not self prescribe for chronic complaints. It is always advisable to seek professional
advice for long-standing complaints. Check with your homeopath before self-prescribing
if you or your child are under homeopathic care or have taken a constitutional remedy
within the past three to six months. Remedies have relationships with one another, and it
would be a shame to take a tissue salt that inadvertently counteracts the effects of a
constitutional remedy that has worked well
