Critical Thinking: What It Is and Why It Counts What is Critical Thinking?

Good thinking, almost opposite of illogical, irrational thinking Thinking that has a purpose (providing a point, interpreting what something means, solving a problem) When a case is on the borderline, it forces us to make important decisions. It confronts us and demands a decision: in our out! Purposeful, reflective judgment about what to believe or what to do (p.16)

Core Critical Thinking Skills Cognitive skills o Interpretation Is objective;; should be based on facts To comprehend and express the meaning or significance of a wide variety of experiences, judgments, conventions, beliefs, rules, procedures, or criteria Includes the subskills: categorization, decoding significance, and clarifying meaning Recognizing a problem and describing it without bias; reading a persons intentions in the expression on her face; distinguishing a main idea from subordinate ideas; constructing or organizing various elements in a reading; paraphrasing someones ideas in your own words; clarifying what a sign, chart, or graph means; identifying an authors purpose, theme, or point of view o Analysis To identify the intended and actual inferential relationships among statements, questions, concepts, and descriptions, or other forms of representation intended to express belief, judgment, experiences, reasons, information, or opinions. Includes examining ideas, detecting arguments, and analyzing arguments as sub-skills Identifying the similarities and differences between two approaches to the solution of a given problem; picking out the main claim and tracing back the various reasons the editor offers in support of that claim; identifying unstated assumptions Example: newspaper o Evaluation To assess the credibility of statements or other representatives which are accounts or descriptions of a persons perception, experience, situation, judgment, belief, or opinion; and to assess the logical strength of the actual or intended inferential relationships among statements, descriptions, or other forms of representation. Components: assessing claims and assessing arguments Judging ones credibility; comparing the strengths and weaknesses of alternative interpretations; determining the credibility of a source of information; judging if two statements contradicts each other or judging if the evidence supports the conclusion; o Inference To identify and secure elements needed to draw reasonable conclusions; to form conjectures and hypotheses; to consider relevant information and to deduce the consequences following from the data, statements, principles, evidence, judgements, beliefs, opinions, concepts, descriptions, questions or other forms of representation Sub-skills: querying evidence, conjecturing alternatives, and drawing conclusions

Recognizing the implications of someones position, predicting what will happen next; develop a set of options for addressing a problem; to form a controlled experiment and applying the proper statistical methods to confirm or reject the hypotheses

Explanation To state and to justify that reasoning in terms of the evidential, conceptual, methodological, criteriological, and contextual consideration upon which ones results were based; and to present ones reasoning in the form of cogent arguments. Sub-skills: Describing methods and results, justifying procedures, proposing and defending with good reasons, and presenting full and well-reasoned, arguments. Constructing a chart which organizes findings, citing the standards and contextual factors used to judge the quality an interpretation of a text, stating research results and describing the methods and criteria used to achieve those results, designing a graphic display which accurately represents the subordinate and super ordinate relationship among concepts or ideas, citing evidence that led you to accept the authors position Self-regulation Others refer to this skill as Metacognition, meaning it raises thinking to another level. Self-consciously to monitor ones cognitive activities Sub-skills: self-examination and self-correction Examining your views on a controversial issue; Checking yourself when listening to a speak to be sure you understand; monitoring how well you seem to be understanding; reminding yourself to spate personal opinions and assumptions from the text; doublechecking yourself by recalculating figures; revising answers in view of errors; changing conclusion

Those who use critical thinking have a critical spirit, meaning a probing inquisitiveness, a keenness of mind, a zealous dedication to reason, and a hunger or eagerness for reliable information. Thinking in Cognitive Science Two Systems System 1 o More intuitive, reactive, quick, and holistic o Relies on a number of heuristics (cognitive maneuvers), key situational characteristics, readily associated ideas, and vivid memories to arrive quickly and confidently at judgment o Helpful in situations when time is short and immediate action is required System 2 o More deliberative, reflective, computational, and rule governed. o reflective thinking system o Allows us to process abstract concepts, to deliberate, to plan ahead, to consider options carefully, to review and revise our work in the light of relevant guidelines or standards or rules of procedure o Relies on well articulated reasons and more fully developed evidence o Reasoning based on analysis, evaluation, explanation, and self-correction. o Useful for making judgments when you find yourself in unfamiliar situations and have more time to figure things out

Affect o Operates when you have an immediate positive or negative reaction to some idea, proposal, person, object, whatever o Gut reaction o No guarantee that gut reaction is always right Association o When one word or idea reminds us of something else o For example, some people associate the word cancer with death Simulation o When you are imagining how various scenarios will unfold o Can lead us to have mistaken expectations Similarity o When we notice some way in which we are like someone else and infer that what happened to that person is therefore more likely to happen to us.

COGNITIVE HEURISTICS ASSOCIATED WITH SYSTEM 1 Satisficing o Consider our alternatives o ***Temporizing running mate of satisficing;; deciding that the option which we have come to is good enough for now. o Settling for something less deserved Risk and loss aversion o Make decisions on the basis of what we are too worried about losing, rather than on the basis of what we might gain Anchoring with adjustment o When we find ourselves making evaluative judgments o The natural thing for us to do is to locate or to anchor our evaluation at some point alone whatever scale we are using Illusion of control o Over-estimate our abilities to control what will happen o We think that plans will enable us to control what happens o But sometimes, even if we do, it fails o Related to hindsight bias tendency to misconstrue our personal influence or responsibility for past events overestimate influence our actions make or underestimate out responsibility
