The Philosophy of the School of Acting/ B.A.

in Performing Arts AKMI Metropolitan College, for the first time in Greece, offers an academic programme of studies in Acting leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. The programme has been designed according to very high standards and the pure aims and expectations of the AKMI Metropolitan College for a complete and contemporary university level education, and aspires to lead in the field of Acting Studies in Greece. The Performing Arts (Acting) programme is offered in three academic years. In the third year of studies (top up year according to the British Educational System) apart from the AKMI IVT students graduates of Higher Drama School and relevant University Departments are also admitted after an audition and interview. The acting programme is practice-based. The students-actors complete their training in the third year (Bachelor of Arts) with their participation in two full scale professional performances of contemporary and classical repertory, which are presented in central theatres of Athens. All the acting, movement, speech, improvisation modules, as well as all the theoretical modules are structured in such a way as to assist in the presentation of one performance at the end of the two first years and two performances in the course of the third year. The objective of the programme is to add to the Greek theatrical scene a significant, lacking element: distinguished knowledge, invaluable experience and skills that will assist the prospective candidates to become the only acting graduates with a university degree and artistic education of the highest quality. During the three years of studies a series of seminars, Master classes and workshops is also conducted for our students from well renowned actors, directors, reviewers, and theatre experts. The student will succeed in developing his/ her personal hallmark technique and scenic presence in the group language of theatre with the prospect of creating final projects-performances that will combine all the knowledge accumulated during the three years of studies and function as a passport for their professional establishment in the field of theatre.

ACTING CLASSES
The student is introduced to the basic principles governing the art of acting, with the objective of creating masterly performances in a wide range of different parts from all the eras of playwriting and in all media i.e. theatre, film, television. Acting I: Commedia dell arte Acting II: Contemporary Greek Theatre Acting III: Contemporary Theatre Acting IV: Classical Repertory

Acting V: Ancient Drama Acting VI: Project Performance The collaboration of the production crew and the building of a part from the first reading to the opening night. Students are called to create on their own a professional performance aided by the tutors of their theatre skills and acting modules.

THEATRE SKILLS
Improvisation The basic principles offering to the student the ability to control all the expressive means, excluding speech, and mainly to discover ways to express feeling through the use of the body. Physical Theatre Introduction to the basic principles of physical theatre which will be studied extensively in the third year (). Aspects of Directing The basic concepts and function of theatre directing. The relationship of the actor and the director. Phonetics The proper pronunciation of the Greek language, the enunciation. Speech Education The eradication of personal speech problematic areas. Dance- Movement The rhythmic exercise and plasticity of body and the learning of dance combinations. Music-Song The basic principles of music education integral for coping with the music needs of any theatre part. Make-up Essential knowledge required from the actors in making up their face with no guidance from a specialist.

THEORETICAL MODULES
World Theatre History Theatre History of all ages from its origins to our days.

Greek Literature Essential knowledge and texts from the Greek Literature from the Late Medieval Age (Byzance) to our days, and their use for the theatre. Dramatic analysis Comparative analysis of texts from all the ages of the theatrical repertory. Dramaturgy Analysing the theatrical texts in ways that will assist in mining data which will enrich the depiction of a character. Set and Costume Design The use of sets and costumes. Basic construction skills. The mask. History of Set and Costume Design Sets and costumes throughout theatre history from the origins to our days.

FILM COURSES
Film Acting Basic principles of Film Acting as an introduction for the advanced third year course. Film History and Practice Film History and movements. The basic principles and processes of creation of a film from the initial concept and script writing to post-production. Film Theory Fundamental principles of film analysis. Narrative and its abolition. Mechanisms that create meaning.

in PERFORMING ARTS MODULES


Preparing the performance Contemporary Play Intensive instruction aiming at the thorough cultivation of the expressive means and the ways they can be used in the creation of parts in theatre leading to the presentation of a professional performance in a central theatre of Athens. Preparing the performance- Ancient Play Intensive instruction in three separate seminars, one for each of the forms of ancient Greek dramatic writing, aiming at the thorough cultivation of the expressive means and the ways they can be used in the creation of parts in Ancient theatre leading to the presentation of a unified professional performance in a central theatre of Athens. Physical Theatre The students through the three parts of the module (Inventiveness and execution: the use of the prop, devised story, corporeal skills) cultivate the potential of a synthesis of all corporeal, intellectual and emotional skills essential for an accomplished stage presence focusing on expressiveness and a sense of stage freedom. Acting for the Camera Students are trained to satisfy the requirements of the profession; they are introduced to advance techniques of Acting for the camera and Television, with studio and external shootings of professional standards. Performance Art Technologies Analysis of the rapidly developing new technologies and practical application in an individual and a group project (film, media art, documentary). Theatre Semiotics Study of the sign systems included in the communication code of the Theatre. Selection of representative performances from the current theatrical season (bearing in mind the theatrical text, the scenic space, the directorial approach, etc.) so as to define and present the ways of production and reception of the various sign systems.
