Read the passage below and answer all the questions that follow.

Too often young people get themselves employment by sheer accident, not knowing or not even caring about what lies ahead in the way of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result they are employed doing the jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction. Our school leavers face so much competition that 5 they little care what they do so long as they are employed and can earn an income of some sort. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it, others fit from one to another looking for something to suit them. The young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary up to their expectations. Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities. 100 The reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been any proper vocational guidance in our educational institutions. Nearly all grope in the dark, and their chief concern when they look for a job is to ask what the salary is like. They never bother to think whether they are suited for the job or, even more importantly, whether the job suits them or not . Being happy at a job is irrelevant to most people. Their attitude is 15 one of who cares! So long as I do my part, keep my working hours and receive my due at the end of the month, what more do I want? Having a job is more than merely providing yourself and your dependents with daily bread and some money for leisure and entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines social status in life, selection of friends, leisure and interests. 20 In choosing a career, you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest. Nothing is more pathetic than taking on a job in which you have no interest, for it can not only discourage your desire to succeed in life, but also ruin your talents and ultimately make you an emotional wreck and a bitter person.

Consideration should be given to various aptitudes. Far too many people have 25 stores of abilities and talents that are not fully utilized or which are even left dormant. Being aware of latent talents will provide you with the incentive to keep working in the face of difficulties and disappointments, because you will know for sure that you are doing the best for yourself and have the confidence that you can accomplish what you set out to do. 30 At this point, it would be useful to note the differences between occupation, profession and vocation. An occupation is an employment, trade or business. It does not necessarily require great mental ability. It caters for people with standard basic education and sufficient skill to carry on essential work to the needs of a country. Professional employment demands extensive college or University training and 35 requires a strict and comprehensive public examination. You should not attempt to enter a professional career unless you have above average intelligence and possess determination to sacrifice time for studies. A vocation has more exclusive demands for it requires not only academic aptitude but also a deep sense of service to mankind plus the feeling of profound loyalty and devotion to ones work. 40 The world in which we live is like a vast forum where our mental capacities, our skills, fortitude and services are bartered. We will offer them for many reasons to earn a living, for personal gains, satisfaction and fame. Some men will commit deeds that will harm others in order to achieve their purpose. Mercifully, this same desire for achievement may compel other men to serve their fellow beings. It is best for all to 45 remember that for the benefit we get from the world, we are behind in turn to contribute something ourselves. Adapted from Work & Be Merry In Comprehensive English by Vivian Quek. Mc-Graw-Hill Far Eastern Publishers (S) Ltd 1972.
