Greening G r Assessments

fo for the Hospitality Sector

Many hospitality providers are seeking smart approaches to save money, conserve resources, be green and create a markeng disncon as a green desnaon.
Waste Reduc on Partners is oering a limited number of no-cost Greening Assessments to hospitality businesses in North Carolina.
The Hospitality Greening Assessment is an on-site, technical review of a businesss u lity use and environmental prac ces. Par cipants such as lodging, restaurants, conference centers and other tourist des na ons will receive a report with a cost / benet assessment of recommenda ons to improve management strategies for energy, water, solid waste and recycling eorts. These WRP technical services are supported by a grant from the US Environment Protec on Agency. The assessments also can help hospitality businesses pursue recogni on through the NC GreenTravel Iniave.

The Hospitality Greening Assessment really opened our eyes to some easy things we could do not only to save money and be better environmental citizens, but to deliver a more sustainable experience for our guests-who are becoming more and more conscious of green travel.

The Hilton Asheville is a LEED Silver Certied Hotel and consumes 30% less water and 25% less energy than a comparable hotel. During construction, over 50% or 4300 tons of construction waste was recycled. Why Participate?
Many hospitality businesses are seeking smart approaches to save money, conserve resources, be green and create a marke ng dis nc on as a green des na on. These Hospitality Greening Assessments are unique in combining energy and water reduc on assessments, solid waste recycling guidance, and other sustainability recommenda ons into one technical assessment. Businesses can use these assessments to meet the requirements of the NC Green Travel Recogni on Ini a ve or other green business cer ca on programs.

Our facility is older and our budget is small. Would WRPs assessment be worthwhile for us?
Yes, WRP can o en provide the most helpful recommendaons to facili es that are older because the xtures in these facili es might not be as ecient as the latest innova ons in the marketplace. Even if your budget is small, WRPs assessment can give a facility a strategic plan for future renovaons by iden fying which upgrades will give you the greatest return on your investment.

Will any information be shared with a state or federal regulatory agency?

No, although this project is funded by the USEPA, WRP will not share informa on for a specic facility with the USEPA or any other en ty unless the facility gives us permission to be a special case study. WRP will only report collec ve / generalized data to EPA regarding the poten al savings related to recommenda ons made to all 25 facili es that take advantage of these free assessments.

Is this program right for us? Although we are interested in sustainability, we are not interested in marketing ourselves as a green facility.
Marke ng yourself as a green facility is not required. WRPs assessments will help your facility become more efcient and save money.

What evidence does the lodging industry have that shows travelers are seeking green hotels?
A survey by Deloi in 2008 found that 34% of business travelers seek out hotels that are environmentally friendly. The same survey also found that 40% of business travelers were willing to pay more for green lodging.
