State
approves
school
program
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Mt. Laurel Sun
The state Department of Edu-
cation approved the Lenape Re-
gional High School Districts
principal evaluation program,
and it is slated to save the district
$15,000, according to Heather Xe-
nakis, director of curriculum
and instruction.
Originally, the district was
going to implement an off-the-
shelf program, which would
have been costly.
According to Xenakis, the dis-
trict was given the chance to sub-
mit its own evaluation practices,
which needed state approval.
The state approved the dis-
tricts program recently, allowing
preparation for use during the
2013-2014 school year.
The state is currently over-
hauling the entire evaluation sys-
tem for teachers and administra-
tors, which will be employed in
the fall.

The Lenape-Cherokee Storm
Robotics Team was honored at a
recent school board meeting for
numerous awards it received this
season.
The team participated in the
world championship in St. Louis
and placed 15th overall among
teams from around the world.
There are 79 students making
up the team, broken into two
squads.
Both Lenape and Cherokee
create something so unique in
that our two schools can come to-
gether and work together, said
superintendent of schools Carol
Birnbohm. Thats what our dis-
trict is all about.
The team received banners,
like state championship winning
athletic teams, which will hang
in the respective high schools.
Of the 109 teams in the tri-state
area, Storm Robotics is ranked
second, despite winning the most
recent championship, though no
explanation was given on the
ranking.
The LRHSD "U Got Brains
Champion Schools Program,"
Heads Up! Eyes Forward cam-
paign was recognized for its
achievement.
The team, comprised of stu-
dents from all four district high
schools, was awarded the top
honor, taking home $10,000 to-
ward prom and a driving simula-
tor.
Winning the competition is
very exciting because it validates
all of the hard work that our stu-
dents performed on the Heads
Up, Eyes Forward! campaign
throughout the school year, said

oes smart beget smart? What
defines the word smart?
And where is the cutoff be-
tween smart and not-so-smart?
The state Department of Education
is contemplating requiring prospec-
tive teachers to be smarter or at least
to perform better in their own school-
ing before they can receive certifica-
tion to lead a classroom in New Jersey.
And why not? Smarter, harder-work-
ing teachers should, in theory, result
in smarter, harder-working students.
It makes sense.
But will it make a difference?
Currently, the DOE requires teach-
ers to achieve a grade-point average of
2.75 in college to receive certification
to teach in the state. The department
is now considering raising that re-
quirement to a 3.0, or a B-average.
Symbolically, it is the right move. C-
students are labeled as average.
Dont we want the men and women
who teach our children to be above
that level? Of course we do. Our teach-
ers should perform higher in their
own schooling than the average stu-
dent. The future of our kids education
is in their hands, after all.
Pennsylvania and Delaware already
require this 3.0-average standard, so
why should New Jersey be any differ-
ent?
In practice, though, how much of a
difference will 0.25 points on a GPA re-
ally make? Will the DOE really attract
smarter, harder-working teachers?
Or, conversely, will it be turning
away quality prospective teachers at a
time when it is looking for more?
Its hard to imagine why the DOE
would spend its time debating what
seems like such a minor procedural
change, especially since its likely that
most New Jersey school districts al-
ready require their teaches to perform
above the average before they are
hired.
If the DOE feels upping the required
GPA would make a difference, then
make the change. But its not an issue
that warrants much debate. Just im-
plement the change, and move on to
bigger and more pressing matters.
Raising the bar? Just do it
DOE should implement higher GPA standards for prospective teachers
Your thoughts
What should the Department of
Education require of our prospective
teachers? Is a GPA minimum the right
measuring stick? Or is there something
else that would work better? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.

Council
reviews
options
for farm
By NICK COHEN
The Mt. Laurel Sun
Sunnyside Farm moved closer
to knowing its fate after a town-
ship workshop meeting on June
17.
The township hired a historic
architect to evaluate and inspect
the property to determine its use-
fulness. Now the council is re-
viewing initial options presented
by the consultant to determine
potential funding sources and
uses.
Sunnyside, located on Hooton
Road, was built in 1838. At that
time, it was the "finest house in
the neighborhood." It was built
for Quaker Joseph Hooton on a
homestead that may date to 1682.
Elisha Roberts expanded the
house in 1876. The land features a
number of buildings, including a
schoolhouse, barn, storage shed
and farmhouse. Through the
family, the house has a connec-
tion to five other historic houses
in the region, including Pauls-
dale, the home of Alice Paul,
which is less than a mile away.
The township purchased the
historic property in 2002 to pre-
serve the land and prevent fur-
ther urbanization. But in the 11
years since buying Sunnyside,
the property has fallen into disre-
pair due to neglect, officials said.
Township manager Maureen
Mitchell said the township re-
ceived $12,000 from the state his-
toric preservation trust fund in
2011 to evaluate the property. To
be eligible to receive the grant,
the municipality provided $4,000.
After receiving the grant, the
township moved to have the prop-

Looking to explore some cul-
ture and find something new to
do this summer? Is there a muse-
um you want to visit? Adult li-
brary cardholders can check out
a museum pass at the Mt. Laurel
Library.
The library partners with 12
different institutions that sell a
pass to the Mt. Laurel Library
that the library can then lend to
their cardholders.
Partners include museums like
the Academy of Natural Sci-
ences, attractions like the Battle-
ship New Jersey and gardens like
the Grounds for Sculpture. Adult
cardholders in good standing can
check out these passes at the
check out desk.
We were inspired by another
librarys success with a museum
pass program and wanted to offer
this to our customers in Mount
Laurel. Customers tell us they
have had great experiences with
the passes.
We are thrilled with pro-
gram, manager of special proj-
ects Joan Serpico said.
We particularly enjoyed using
the passes last summer. I have a
six-year-old daughter who is not
in summer camp, and it can be a
challenge to keep her entertained
without spending a lot of money
over the summer. We have mem-
berships to a couple of local
places, but after a while we get
tired of visiting the same places.
The pass program has allowed us
to explore some local attractions
we might not otherwise have vis-
ited, Mt. Laurel resident Chris-
tine Lenko said.
The program is of no extra
cost to taxpayers and is fully fund-
ed by the generous support of the
Friends of the Mt. Laurel Library.
Many passes get checked out
every four to five days.
The program is just what we
had hoped for. We are happy to
have added two new partners in
time for the summer: Penn Muse-
um and Guggenheim Museum,
Sepico said.

museum passes program, visit

The trust grant funded a feasi-
bility study to determine allow-
able uses for the property, esti-
mate costs and revenues of iden-
tified uses, and propose construc-
tion scopes for recommended
uses.
The propertys historic and en-
vironmental regulations were
also addressed in the study.
The council will review the rec-
ommendations from the consult-
ant and provide feedback at the
next township council meeting,
which was scheduled for June 24.
In other news:
The towns solar panel ordi-
nance will have a first reading at
the next township council meet-
ing.
It will be announced that
ground-mounted solar systems
will be prohibited in residential
areas while roof units will be al-
lowed.
Definitions of each specific
system will be added to the ordi-
nance before the reading.
A revised ordinance to up-
date the existing ordinance in re-
gard to signs throughout the
township is also under review by
the council.
The township hopes to adopt a
policy that will allow LED signs
with changeable copy for munici-
pal and EMS buildings as well as
schools.
Currently the township does
not permit LED signs unless it is
granted by variance through the
zoning board.
The council has concerns
about the size of the signs as well
as if the brightness and moving
text is a distraction for motorists.
The newly written ordinance
will be reviewed and researched
before being brought for first
reading and public comment.

Team receives top
honors for
driving campaign
trict release.
"It was a great opportunity to
grow as an individual, learning
communications and public rela-
tions skills, while also helping to
get out an incredibly important
message to drivers in New Jersey
and beyond," Lenape High School
senior Matt McGrorty said.
Highlights of Lenape Region-
al's winning campaign included a
partnership with the state De-
partment of Transportation
spearheaded by McGrorty, whose
persistence resulted in a visit to
Lenape High School from NJDOT
Executive Director of Trans-
portation Systems Management
Dennis Motiani and the Heads
Up, Eyes Forward! message post-
ed on 160 dynamic message signs
including the Garden State Park-
way and the Turnpike.
Ellen Mears, coordinator of
administrative services, will re-
tire effective July 1. Members of
the board and administrators
honored her for her more than 20
years of service at the district.
Ellen is the epitome of profes-
sionalism and made sure this dis-
trict ran smoothly, Birnbohm
said. She has earned a restful re-
tirement. Congratulations,
Ellen.
Mears will spend her retire-
ment with her husband, children
and six grandchildren.
She never let us down, presi-
dent of the board Ted Shinske
said. There was no task too diffi-
cult for her.
The next meeting is scheduled
for July 17 at 7:30 at the adminis-
tration building, 93 Willow Grove
Road.

The Girlblazers summer camp
celebration will take place on
Wednesday, July 3 from 10 a.m.
until noon at Paulsdale, 128
Hooton Road.
Hear about all that 25 fifth and
sixth-grade girls learned and ac-
complished at the Alice Paul In-
stitutes Girlblazers summer
camp and how they have grown
as leaders.
During the summer camp, the
girls learned about six women
leaders:
Alice Paul, artist Frida Kahlo,
tennis champion Rosie Casals,
journalist Ida Wells-Barnett, nat-
uralist Rachel Carson and astro-
naut Ellen Ochoa. Working in
teams, they created the projects
that they will present at the clos-
ing ceremony.
Camp activities included ten-
nis lessons, an invention conven-
tion, hiking and outdoor adven-
tures, art and self-portraiture,
meeting leaders of today and in-
vestigative writing.
The closing ceremony is free
and open to the public. Refresh-
ments will be served.
For more information or to reg-
ister, contact the Alice Paul Insti-
tute at info@alicepaul.org or 856-
231-1885.
Girlblazers summer camp was
supported by grants from The
Benjamin Foundation and the
New Jersey Historical Commis-
sion.
