State
approves
school
program
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Shamong Sun
The state Department of Edu-
cation approved the Lenape Re-
gional High School Districts
principal evaluation program,
and it is slated to save the district
$15,000, according to Heather Xe-
nakis, director of curriculum
and instruction.
Originally, the district was
going to implement an off-the-
shelf program, which would
have been costly.
According to Xenakis, the dis-
trict was given the chance to sub-
mit its own evaluation practices,
which needed state approval.
The state approved the dis-
tricts program recently, allowing
preparation for use during the
2013-2014 school year.
The state is currently over-
hauling the entire evaluation sys-
tem for teachers and administra-
tors, which will be employed in
the fall.

zano Winery will hold its second
annual Independence Day Fire-
works Festival. From 6 through 10
p.m., there will be live music, food
from local vendors, entertainment
for kids and a fireworks show.
Since the township does not
hold any events for Independence

nity for Shamong residents to cel-
ebrate the Fourth without travel-
ing out of the township.
Food from Murphys Markets
Smoker and Grill, Pic-A-Lilli
Restaurant, Star of the Sea
Seafood, Tony & Doms Texas
Roasted Corn and more will be
available for purchase.
Musical performances by
Chers Playground and DJ
Brian Basara will take place
throughout the evening. The
event will be hosted by Scott
Friedman of 100.7 WZXLs morn-
ing show.
The fireworks show will begin
at sunset and shot at low altitude
only a few hundred yards away,
ensuring everyone in attendance
at the winery will have a great
view.
Parking is free in the main field
at Valenzano, but, if it fills up, ad-
ditional parking will be provided
in neighboring lots for a fee.
Admission for adults 21 and
over is $10, and under 21 is $5. Ad-
vanced ticket sales end June 30
but admission can be purchased
at the gate.

Road
Show
meeting
June 26
Burlington County Freeholder
Director Joe Donnelly announced
that the first public meeting
road-show will be held on
Wednesday, June 26 at 7 p.m. at
the Burlington Township Munici-
pal building, 851 Old York Road.
As part of the transparency
plan that Donnelly initiated in
the beginning of the year, the
freeholder board will be taking
some of its meetings on the road
to towns in various locations
around the county.
We want to make sure that all
of our residents have the opportu-
nity to be a part of county govern-
ment, Donnelly said. Taking
meetings to different parts of the
county will give folks an opportu-
nity to attend meetings in their
home towns.
Additional road shows are
being planned and will be an-
nounced once details are final-
ized. Check the county website
for updates:

Bridge Commission sees
16 percent energy savings
As a result of a comprehensive
energy audit of its facilities and
implementation of recommended
energy improvements, the
Burlington County Bridge Com-
mission realized a savings of 16
percent, or $13,889 on its energy
and gas costs over the first four
months of this year. The energy
audit and improvements were
part of the Greenbacks to Go
Green shared service the com-
mission championed in partner-
ship with the freeholders that pro-
vided $2.5 million in energy up-
grades to 31 Burlington County
municipalities and 10 schools,
thanks to grant money obtained
by the commission. The energy
audits identified areas within fa-
cilities where energy-saving, cost-
justified measures could be ap-
plied. For the commissions ad-
ministration building in Palmyra,
that meant substantial lighting
retrofits, where existing light
bulbs are replaced with LED or
compact fluorescent light bulbs,
and renovations to existing heat-
ing and cooling systems. Similar
improvements were made to the
commissions police, mainte-
nance and toll buildings in
Palmyra and to the administra-
tion building in Burlington.
The Burlington County Bridge
Commission manages the
Tacony-Palmyra and Burlington-
Bristol Bridges, and through its
economic development and im-
provement authority powers, as-
sists Burlington County munici-
palities in economic development
and community revitalization
projects and extends pooled fi-
nancing options to local govern-
ment in Burlington County. These
initiatives resulted in a savings of
more than $15.9 million and gar-
nered more than $14.8 million in
grant monies.

oes smart beget smart? What
defines the word smart?
And where is the cutoff be-
tween smart and not-so-smart?
The state Department of Education
is contemplating requiring prospec-
tive teachers to be smarter or at least
to perform better in their own school-
ing before they can receive certifica-
tion to lead a classroom in New Jersey.
And why not? Smarter, harder-work-
ing teachers should, in theory, result
in smarter, harder-working students.
It makes sense.
But will it make a difference?
Currently, the DOE requires teach-
ers to achieve a grade-point average of
2.75 in college to receive certification
to teach in the state. The department
is now considering raising that re-
quirement to a 3.0, or a B-average.
Symbolically, it is the right move. C-
students are labeled as average.
Dont we want the men and women
who teach our children to be above
that level? Of course we do. Our teach-
ers should perform higher in their
own schooling than the average stu-
dent. The future of our kids education
is in their hands, after all.
Pennsylvania and Delaware already
require this 3.0-average standard, so
why should New Jersey be any differ-
ent?
In practice, though, how much of a
difference will 0.25 points on a GPA re-
ally make? Will the DOE really attract
smarter, harder-working teachers?
Or, conversely, will it be turning
away quality prospective teachers at a
time when it is looking for more?
Its hard to imagine why the DOE
would spend its time debating what
seems like such a minor procedural
change, especially since its likely that
most New Jersey school districts al-
ready require their teaches to perform
above the average before they are
hired.
If the DOE feels upping the required
GPA would make a difference, then
make the change. But its not an issue
that warrants much debate. Just im-
plement the change, and move on to
bigger and more pressing matters.
Raising the bar? Just do it.
DOE should implement higher GPA standards for prospective teachers.
Your thoughts
What should the Department of
Education require of our prospective
teachers? Is a GPA minimum the right
measuring stick? Or is there something
else that would work better? Share your
thoughts through a letter to the editor.
Buy Local classes to be held in July
Freeholder Director Joseph Donnelly
announced today that two informational
sessions will be held in the next month to
explain the countys new buy local initia-
tive, Shop Burlington County First to foster
economic growth in Burlington County.
The initiative is a joint collaboration with
the Burlington County Board of Chosen
Freeholders and their regional partners,
the Burlington County Bridge Commission
and the Burlington County Chamber of
Commerce.
Shop Burlington County First is a coor-
dinated countywide campaign designed to
support in-county businesses, promote
downtowns and business districts,
strengthen the local economy, and improve
conditions for hiring employees.
The informational sessions are open to
area businesses, local business and eco-
nomic development associations, elected of-
ficials and residents of Burlington County.
They are scheduled for
Tuesday, July 9, 6-7:30 p.m., Carslake
Community Center, 209 Crosswicks Road,
Bordentown City.
Monday, July 15, 6-7:30 p.m., Burling-
ton County College Culinary Arts Center,
21 Mill Street in Mount Holly.
If each household in Burlington Coun-
ty spent just $10 more each month at
Burlington County businesses, the result-
ing annual impact to the local economy
would be about $20 million dollars, Don-
nelly said.
The Shop Burlington County First initia-
tive will encourage residents to shop and
spend in their own backyards, rather than
online or in big retail stores.
For every $100 spent locally in independ-
ently owned stores, shops and restaurants,
$44 to $83 is re-circulated in the local econo-
my.
Its estimated that there are 8,000 one-of-
a-kind, independent businesses in Burling-
ton County.
Shop Burlington County First is a collab-
orative initiative that will market and pro-
mote county businesses; the start-up costs
will be subsidized by its regional partners
(freeholders, Bridge Commission, and
Chamber of Commerce), local partners
(business associations, municipal econom-
ic development committees, Burlington
County Chamber of Commerce, etc.) will
bear the responsibility of registering indi-
vidual businesses.
More details about the SBCF shared
service will be available at the information-
al sessions listed above.

achievement.
The team, comprised of stu-

throughout the school year, said
John Donaldson, LRHSD director

"It was a great opportunity to

tions skills, while also helping to
get out an incredibly important
message to drivers in New Jersey

Highlights of Lenape Region-

Ellen Mears, coordinator of
administrative services, will re-
tire effective July 1. Members of
the board and administrators
honored her for her more than 20
years of service at the district.
Ellen is the epitome of profes-

trict ran smoothly, Birnbohm
said. She has earned a restful re-
tirement. Congratulations,
