1. (a) Write a detailed note on the instruments that measures earthquakes. (b) Write a detailed note on the hurricane KATRINA. Write the Date of formation, Highest wind speed, Fatalities, Extent of damage and Areas atected. [8+8] 2. (a) Dene the terms i. Critical damping ii. Damping ratio (b) Derive the expression for the displacement of an undamped vibrations of SDOF system under harmonic loading. Sketch the steady state and transient response to harmonic loading. [4+12] 3. (a) Dene Degrees of Freedom. Explain, how do you select them. (b) Derive the equations of motion for the MDOF system. 4. (a) How do you make buildings ductile for good seismic performance? 5. (a) What is the eect of ignoring the contribution of masonry inll in the lateral load analysis of a multistorey frame ? (b) In what manner, is the behaviour of a soft storey construction likely to be dierent from a regular construction in the event of an earthquake ? [8+8] 6. (a) How do brick masonry houses behave during earthquakes ? (b) Determine the wind pressure for a bridge having 100 years life, 25m span, located about 20 km from Hyderabad. (b) Derive the equations of motion for the MDOF system. [4+12] 4. (a) A R.C. framed building is 45 m 15 m in plan and 40 m in height consisting of stories 4 m in height. It is braced in the longitudinal direction by rigid frame action and by a R.C. inll wall in the transverse direction. Determine the design wind force on the framed building. Assume that the building is situated in terrain category 3 with basic wind speed of 50 m/sec in a fully developed velocity prole. (b) Explain the Static and Dynamic eects of wind on various types of structures. [8+8] 5. (a) What are the precautions to be taken at the design stage for ensuring a high quality structure ? A cable attached to the tank applies a lateral (horizontal) force of 200 kN and pulls the tank horizontally by 20 mm. The cable is suddenly cut and the resulting free vibration is recorded. At the end of 4 complete cycles, the time is 2 sec and the amplitude is 10 mm. Compute the following.
