HOME JOURNEYS
Is a dream home your goal? A home that looks perfect whenever you walk through the door? But looking perfect doesnt show how a home works for you in your everday life. And isnt perfect kind of boring? I think our homes should tell the story of our life. They should show who we are, what we have been doing and where we want to be. Now all my kids have left my home its different to the busy family home it used to be. But traces of them remain everywhere. And I want to keep those traces, as small reminders of the life that was once there. This issue is full of snapshots of life at home. One thing is for sure, they will all look different in a few years. Not because of fashion or trends, but because life moves on and needs change.

Finding my way

Finding my way

ABOUT MY HOME
Coming here was a childish dream I shared with my ex, but we didnt realise how hard life in the Italian countryside could be. Ten years ago the house was a wreck. My goal was to create an open, warm and lowmaintenance home. In the end we created a kind of paradise, but along the way we grew apart, our marriage ended and he moved away. Now I live here with my sons Alexander and Sebastian and my new partner Rafaelle. Hanne

I know nothing is forever, and just enjoy each day

04 05

I dont watch TV, the boys do. Its important they feel that they can relax here too. They can put their feet up on my ancient IKEA sofas and I dont have to stress. Ive had the sofas for 19 years and when they get dirty I just wash the covers. Theyre so durable.

Im not a fan of plastic things. Everything I have is made from natural fabrics. I soften stone and concrete by using lots of different textures that invite you to touch, like leather, suede, wood and rattan. O KOLDBY cow hide $399 Brown/ white. POMP lantern for block candle $19/ea H28cm. Clear glass. LJUSS UVS table lamp $69 H42cm. Brown.

My home looks luxurious but its about making life easy for yourself. Then you can make time for the things you enjoy.
Its human to say that nothing is perfect. This is a big house to look after, so to make things easier I decided that my home style would be a little bit falling down. I dont want to beat myself up over small imperfections. Space is the luxury here, not the things inside. I have high ceilings, not expensive things. Thats the trade-off I made. The house is minimal in style because we didnt have any money when we decorated. We used to live in a small apartment in Amsterdam so being able to dry clothes outside is a luxury. Were the sort of people who would be happy living under a bridge, but Im glad we dont have to. I dont think you can compete with nature. I avoid greens, yellows and blues at home. I prefer to see them outside. When we renovated the house I designed it so that every room would open on to the garden, with big windows that frame the landscape. The only other pictures I have in the house are by my children, who are the best artists in the world! Dont be ruled by trends. Pick things you like. Thats the key to creating a style thats right for you. I decorated ten years ago and had to think hard about each choice, so I havent had to do anything since. Stone colours and natural textures and fabrics are liveable and hard-wearing. With children, pets and guests I dont have time to be precious. In the summer my house becomes a hotel. I love having lots of people around, but I teach my guests to be independent. The shelves in the kitchen are open so everyone can help themselves. In the evening we eat together, normally outside. All my crockery is mix-and-match white, so it doesnt matter if anything gets broken. MORE INSPIRATION Go in store to nd lots of comfortable seats for inside and out!

A GOOD IDEA Blur the lines between inside and out. Weve brought branches, plants and stoneware indoors and take lightweight furniture, cushions and fabrics outside to create a natural ow from inside to out.

Im not one of those people who changes things all the time. Im an interior designer by trade so when I get home I prefer to relax. Simple furnishings and soothing colours help me unwind. O OFELIA blanket $29 W130xL170cm. White. ALSEDA stool $39/ea Banana bre. 60, H18cm.

B ooks are the only things I have lots of. I read one a week

A GOOD IDEA Use things in unusual ways. I created a focal point in my neutral bedroom by hanging a tasseled curtain behind my bed, says Hanne. Make your own headboard by hanging a length of fabric behind your bed, or cut it into long thin strips for a tasseled effect. And I hung low ceiling lights instead of using table lamps I think it looks less cluttered. Stacking old suitcases instead of using a side table creates extra storage and makes a place for books and water by my bed.

Finding my way

EVERYTHING ON DISPLAY
The things that we use all the time are stored on open shelves in the kitchen. It makes them so much easier for me to nd and guests to help themselves.

EVERYTHING IN GROUPS
Everyday objects like crockery can be beautiful when stored in groups. Hanging lights in clusters above the table makes a strong focal point.

EVERYTHING IS PRACTICAL
I collect things that are beautiful and practical. I have lots of trays were always carrying things outside to eat. O FAKTUM/RUBRIK stainless steel kitchen combination See in store for details. SIGURD bench $149 W114xD43, H45cm. White. LACK wall shelf $49/ea W190xL26cm. Black-brown. IKEA 365+ LUNTA pendant lamp $79/ea 20. Glass/ white. A GOOD IDEA Decorate with light. I have three types of light in my kitchen and its still not enough! There are task lights above the work suface so I can see when Im cooking, a cluster of pendant lights above the kitchen table and fairy lights draped along the hanging rail. I think they really soften the industrial look of the kitchen. I love the contrast of soft and feminine, and hard and industrial. I like to play with opposing images.

THE JOURNEY FROM HOUSE TO HOME THEN I grew up in Norway then moved to New York when I was 18. Thats where I met my ex. Hes half-Swedish, half-Italian which is why we came to settle in Italy. We found this place a wreck, really just a ceiling with no walls, no hot water or electricity. We bought it without thinking how hard it could be with two young children, a husband who travelled for work and me speaking no Italian. It took a year to make this home I learned Italian from the men who worked on the house so I probably speak it like a builder! NOW I know nothing is forever. I nd comfort in change in being able to adapt and grow. The break-up of my marriage taught me this. I thought that the two of us would be here together forever. But over a lifetime you change, thats normal. Where I am now is a good place. I run my own business, have gorgeous kids, a home were always happy to come back to and a new man in my life. THE FUTURE When I met Rafaelle the condition was that I come as a package me, my sons, the pets and this house. Rafaelle loves us all. I no longer imagine how life might be in 20 years I enjoy each day as it comes. Building this place has shown me that, however things change, its possible to make yourself at home anywhere

IKEA PS 2012 DRAWERS Im environmentally aware, and that inuenced my choice of materials. The drawers are made from bamboo and recycled PET plastic. Bamboo is a great renewable resource so using it helps save sensitive forests, and PET is recyclable, says designer Sarah Fager. O IKEA PS 2012

KEEPING IT REAL
Meet IKEA PS 2012, the range with model good looks, big brains and loads of personality, designed for real homes! Project Leader Peter Klinkert explains
The heart of the matter PS puts the focus on cutting-edge Scandinavian design, without losing sight of what makes IKEA unique: affordable quality design for the many people. Its a collection that reacts to what is going on in the design world in a way that is relevant to everyone. Taking inspiration from the past We didn't want to just reproduce something from the past, but we do have a rich design history to draw from, so we set our designers the challenge of looking at our archives and coming up with something new. We wanted innovative products, new materials, updated forms. And we wanted them to be relevant, accessible and usable for people at home today. Design belongs in homes All the pieces in the PS 2012 collection make strong design statements. We think everyone deserves a handful of pieces in their home that they are really proud of, which are functional, but also have something extra, something new, unexpected, interesting. The collection is hopefully so broad that there will be something for everyone: from shoe storage that doubles as seating, to a childrens shelf that mimics a dolls house. We took the products to peoples homes to be tried, tested and photographed, just to make sure they t!

PS is not only great design, it brings together function, form and affordability
Peter Klinkert

All these pictures were taken in peoples homes, says Project Leader Peter Klinkert. We didnt want to shoot this in a studio because people dont live in super coordinated, 100% IKEA homes. We hope that seeing the products like this will inspire our customers.

TALKING DESIGN

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Range strategist Mats Nilsson explains how looking to the past can help create something for the future
Everyone involved in creating the range, from the designers to the technicians and the suppliers, was thinking continuously about how to make this PS range more sustainable than ever before. After all, together we are smarter! We encouraged the designers to look at more than 60 years of IKEA design and home-furnising history as a starting point. They took inspiration from shapes, functions, materials and colours from the past, and combined those ideas with modern innovations, like wood-plastic and LED. The results came in many different forms, because each response was personal. Lisa Norinder took a chair her father designed and made it stackable so it saves on transport costs, and Nike Karlssons sofa is pocket-sprung so it uses less material and is easily recyclable. These are just some of the ways we have created products that are more sustainable.

ENERGY SAVER NOW AND THEN Like me, my father Lars was a designer for IKEA, says Lisa Norinder. We always said we would work together, but he died before I went to design school. For this project I decided to take one of his dining chairs ALBERT, designed in 1986 and update it for 2012 by making it stackable. It meant I nally got to full my dream of working with my father. l IKEA PS 2012 stool $69 W37, H65cm. Blue. TABLE TALK This table is made from bamboo, a sustainable material. It folds out to make room for extra guests. l IKEA PS 2012 dining table $299 L74/106/138xW80, H74cm. Bamboo/ white. Pine. IKEA PS 2012 add-on chest of 6 drawers $199 W52xD48, H48cm. Pine. LED bulbs use less energy and last 20 times longer than traditional bulbs. Saving energy never looked so good! l IKEA PS 2012 pendant lamp $259 45, H15cm. Black.

IDEAS TO TRY

KITCHEN 1,2,3
Designers Patrik and Carolina share their top tips for planning a kitchen that makes cooking easy
Patrik and Carolina, both 26, met at design school and set out on a journey to renovate a run-down, 1920s house in Gothenburg. They wanted it to feel like home for them, but also to be a welcoming place to invite guests. Patrik and I have dinner parties all the time so we really wanted to design a kitchen that was functional, but also comfortable to relax in. We didnt have much money but we had lots of time to plan what we wanted

1. THE ORIGINAL ROOM The kitchen was out of date in a cosy way! Im the daughter of a restaurant family and like an industrial aesthetic. We planned a cooking area, an area for washing and storing plates and an area for food preparion with a sink and a long worktop.
PHOTOGRAPHY LINA IKSE

2. MORE THAN A KITCHEN We wanted our kitchen to be the heart of our home, somewhere we felt comfortable hanging out, so we added inherited furniture to soften the industrial look. The dining table is from Patriks grandmother and we found the old school chairs at a ea market. MORE INSPIRATION Find easy updates in store. I was an architect but missed being creative and painting. I wanted to get my hands dirty! So I decided to give up my career and with the help of my new home live a more artistic life. Ana Pina

CREATIVE ORGANISING 1
Make your space inspiring. By my work desk I have a wall for inspiration. It started out as a magnetic board for organising, but then I added postcards, pages from magazines I thought, if things inspire me, they should be out in the open! Sometimes I like to spread out on the oor when Im working. But I always put everything away it signies the end of the working day.

A creative path

ITS NEVER TOO LATE TO FOLLOW YOUR HEART. I LOVED DRAWING WHEN I WAS YOUNGER AND AS AN ARCHITECTURE STUDENT I DREW ALL THE TIME. BUT WORKING AS AN ARCHITECT MEANT SITTING AT THE COMPUTER FOR HOURS MAKING TECHNICAL DRAWINGS. ITS NOT AS CREATIVE AS IT SEEMS. After ve years I decided to follow a new path and went back to my roots. I wanted to see if I could make a living from art. Walking away from a steady career felt scary at rst. Some days it still is. But most days I just feel excited to have my own brand of illustrations and jewellery. I met my boyfriend Nuno at the architects rm where we both worked. By the time we started looking for this apartment, I had given up my job. We didnt have much money so we made a checklist of things we needed: somewhere in the town centre and near a metro station, with space so I could work from home. We would pass this block on the train each day and I would tell Nuno that to live here would be great it is part of a social housing project designed in the 1970s by my favourite Portuguese architect lvaro Siza Vieira. After Lisbons city centre was destroyed by re in 1988, Siza was part of the team that rebuilt it. To live in one of his buildings was an honour we thought we could not afford, but when we looked into it, we found this apartment for sale. It was in our budget and had the old fashioned wooden shutters Id always dreamed of! It was meant to be. Being part of a community in the city is rare, but there is denitely a sense of community here. Every summer we celebrate the So Joo festival with our neighbours in the shared courtyards Siza designed for the complexs residents. Your home should say something about you. In a complex like this, the buildings look alike. But inside, I think Ive managed to make home say something about us. The mix of warm and neutral colours here reects our personalities Im usually quite shy and introspective but, when Im with someone I know, I show my passionate and expressive side. MORE INSPIRATION Find 100s of creative ideas for your home at www.IKEAFAMILYLIVE.com CREATIVE ORGANISING 3
In the past two years I have completely re-arranged my studio at least three times. I like to make my labels out of masking tape because theyre easy to replace if I decide to move things around again. l TROFAST frame $59/ea W46xD30, H94cm. TROFAST storage box $3/ea W30xL42, H10cm.

CREATIVE ORGANISING 2
Think outside the box. I found these rail-hung containers in the kitchen department, but theyre perfect for storing my tools. And the holes in this brick make great pencil holders. I stuck a protective layer to the bottom so it doesnt scratch my desk. l BYGEL container $1/ea BYGEL rail $6 L100xD4.5, H5cm.

A GOOD IDEA Choose the right chair for its purpose. Is it for working or relaxing? Is it adjustable? Does it support your back?

CREATIVE ORGANISING 6 THE JOURNEY FROM HOUSE TO HOME THEN When we rst came to see this house there was a family living in it and the walls were painted green, but all I could see was us living here. Nuno and I have similar taste so we decided on big things, like the bathroom and the ooring, together. But I did all the decorating and arranging myself. NOW Im focusing on my work and getting established, so having the space here to work from home is very important. I hope to make a living from my art without the constraints of money, time or place just creating and living life to the fullest. This house has denitely helped get me started. THE FUTURE I grew up in Porto and have lived here all my life. We both love to travel but have never made it outside Europe yet! The great thing about being an artist is that you can do it anywhere, so maybe well move to Paris or New York once Ive had the time to get established with my work.
Look at the big picture. I like to arrange rooms around the larger pieces of furniture, like the bed, sofa, or wardrobe, because there are usually only one or two places where they can t. O MALM 3-piece headboard/ bed shelf set $299 W169xD31, H77cm. Oak veneer.

Leave room for change. I dont think about the way I organise space as permanent. For instance, displaying artwork on picture rails means I can easily refresh, and add to, my collection.

CREATIVE ORGANISING 5
Make space for your passions. Although were organised and hide most things away in boxes and behind doors, I dont hide our books and CDs because they show who we are and what we like. O BILLY/BENNO bookcase combination $334 IKEA STOCKHOLM 3-seat sofa $3,999 W212xD89, H81cm. Elegant dark brown. TROLLSTA side table $79 W38xD38, H40cm. White.

Textiles to go

Bright colours make people smile and bring a sense of fun to any space
live stylist Sam Grigg

Curtains
Textiles can transform your home, no matter how small your space! Like this camper van it was brown and quite damp on the inside, but it was easy to change into something bright and fun. The rst thing I did was replace the curtains a small change that can make a huge difference. I doublesided them so that the stripy pattern is visible from the inside and out. l BARBRO RAND fabric $14.90/m W150cm. Multicolour.

Wash bag
The beauty of a camper van is that you can pack all your things in it and go anywhere, sleep anywhere. A hanging wash bag makes the perfect place to store toiletries. Just cut out a large rectangle, sew pockets in place, and attach to a hanger. l BARBRO RUTA plastic-coated fabric $14.90/m Assorted colours.

Outdoor seating
I created some comfy seating by covering lots of thin mattresses in different fabrics. They are great for lounging outdoors, but would also work in a kids room as a cool sofa that transforms into spare beds. Ive always been fascinated by retro American ads like the posters I had all over my room as a teenager. And looking around our home, youll see not much has changed theres one on nearly every wall! My husband Shin and I both travelled a lot in our 20s so our home is a mixture of everything weve collected. We used to think about opening a shop full of imported collectables like t-shirts, toys and signs, and calling it Finders Keepers. But I fell

pregnant with Hal so the plan was postponed and we concentrated on making a home for the three of us. Some people might think its too busy, but bright colours make me feel energised and having lots of things to look at makes me feel comfortable. Home is a place to recharge your batteries and relax. Pastel colours and minimalism dont work for me but I can see how they do for others. When my parents saw the apartment they said, This is Meg all over!

I love our chest of drawers it divides our living area from our study, and from the outside you cant tell its full of a mess of things! O HEMNES chest of 8 drawers $469 W162xD51, H97cm. Grey-brown.

A GOOD IDEA Plan ahead. Because I enjoy cooking, I knew exactly what pots and pans I needed and where to put them so they are always to hand. And I knew I wanted a kitchen island somewhere for relaxed meals and where Hal can do his homework while I cook. THE JOURNEY FROM HOUSE TO HOME THEN When we bought this place it was a typical Japanese three-room apartment, with a very narrow entrance, small rooms and low ceilings. I didnt like the idea of tting our lives into an exisiting home, so we decided to create an empty box that we could ll with the things we love. Our vision was for a home that could grow

with us, so making it an open space felt like starting at the beginning we could always add walls in the future. NOW The openness helps us be close. Our time together is limited so its nice to feel the others presence even when were doing different things. FUTURE Id like to own a jazz caf when I retire. But for now Ill just keep collecting good music.

Following our hearts

Shin is Hals favourite playmate

When I was in school, I wasnt sure what I wanted to be. But eventually I was lucky enough to realise that I only had to be how I want to be, not an occupation. Since then I have been following my heart and life is great. After the earthquake in 2011, I just feel lucky to be here. Life should not be taken for granted, but be taken advantage of. I hope Hal can learn to do the same. I believe learning should be fun, and as a Childrens Manager

at the IKEA store, I have discovered how important play is. Its a great way for Hal to learn and to nd out who he is. I think thats why it was so important for us to give him his own space in the apartment and create a good home for him. We plan to build walls around his play area to turn it into his own room when hes older.

Shin used to be a puppeteer, so Hal goes to him when he wants to play and me when he wants to eat!' O Pictured left: MANDAL headboard $249 W240xD28, H62cm. Birch/ white.

Hal, 5, loves hunting bugs in the woods near his Tokyo home. Will the forest of friends in the VANDRING range be his new playmates?
Lots of children live far from nature, says illustrator and designer Ann-Cathrine Sigrid Sthlberg. When I thought about how I would draw the plants and animals for the VANDRING range, my aim was to make children feel comfortable with and curious about nature. We need new generations to care about nature and animals. When I started designing the range, I was asked to think about what the forest looks like, what happens in the forest, under stones and behind trees. I went out walking in the woods for inspiration, collecting things to draw from. The rst creature I drew was a hedgehog. He was very easy to start with hedgehogs are so friendly, I think! I hope the VANDRING range encourages childrens creativity and they use the soft toys and textiles to make up their own games and stories about forest life.

Summers hottest look is a happy mix of modern design and retro glamour. Designers Barbara Bendix Becker and Mette Bache explain

Mix pastels, greys and brights for an instant summer update

THE TEXTILES Use textiles to make an impact and quickly bring a new trend into your space. For this look, pick patterns with geometric shapes in contrasting colours rather than overly busy prints. THE PALETTE Weve been inuenced by artists of the 1950s like Mir, who used a very bold colour palette with soft greys and more muted tones, say Barbara and Mette. I wanted to be an interior designer when I was little and I love experimenting in my home. I had made a good start at organising my apartment, but it was still quite cluttered, which made it hard to relax. My head was full of ideas, but I couldnt work out how to put them into action. sa has been my genie in a bottle. We talked on the phone and she visited my house before she drew any plans, so it felt like a real collaboration. She helped me realise my potential.

My home is small but perfectly formed My advice to anyone with a small at is to buy BILLYs I have eight! They are sa came up with the idea of displaying my design books in them too. I love the pops of colour this adds and how it has

made my home reect who I am. I had never had a sofa in my home because it is so small, but sa found this narrow sofa that ts perfectly. It means I now have a cosy corner where I can read and chill out with friends. sas tip: In a small space, its

important to make different zones for different activities, and bookcases are a great way of achieving this. Kim was missing a relaxation zone adding a chaise longue means friends dont have to sit on the oor when they visit!

I cant wait to show my friends the result I didnt think a dining table was really necessary, but Im so pleased sa persuaded me to try it. Now I have somewhere to work and I can invite friends over for dinner rather than just coffee! sas tip: I chose a fold-down dining table that has storage built in. Because it sits between the living area and kitchen, it creates two separate zones Kim can use one side of the table for eating and the other for working. This experience has taught me a lot My grandmas second husband made the painting above my bed. I love it so much that I used the colours in it as inspiration for my home. But I always felt that I hadnt got it quite right,

that the look wasnt masculine enough. The textiles sa added on the headboard and the bedlinen really made a difference and created the strong, masculine feel I always wanted. sas tip: Use colours to unify a multi-use, open-plan space. Too many different and bright colours can make it feel untidy. What a difference The changes sa and I made may seem small, but theyve made a big difference to my life. My home is so organised now that my mind is clear I dont have a list of jobs to do! Everything has its place I have a cosy corner to relax in, a place to entertain, and a space to work. All in 30m2! Turn the page for my pick of our best ideas.

KIMS IDEAS OF HOME I grew up in The Hague, by the beach but Ive lived in Amsterdam for seven years. I love being in the heart of the action, but I miss seeing the sea!

I love to travel to new places but I also think home is very important, so I am never away for too long. My home is my safe place to come back to. I chose my apartment based

on location, not size this is the biggest at Ive had and its only 30m2! I love that its close to the city centre, but on a quiet street where I can nd peace if I need to.

Learning as we go

OUR HOME STORY IN BRIEF Architects Rachael and Shane live in their self-built, eco home in Seal Rocks, New South Wales, with their three children Memphis, 14, Huon, 12, and Cibella, 9. They call their home the square doughnut because of its unusual design the house wraps around itself and all the rooms open up to create a central courtyard. The idea of a central outdoor living space was inspired by houses we saw when we travelled in Spain and Morocco, says Shane. Our homes style is Spanish colonial transported to Australia done on a budget!

EXPERIENCE AND PATIENCE WERE OUR BUILDING BLOCKS

It took 20 years of designing other peoples houses, 10 years of saving and a passion for the great outdoors for architects Shane and Rachael to realise their vision of a simple, exible family home that is kind to the environment

A GOOD IDEA Get a wormery! Theyre smaller and less work than composters and convert kitchen waste into organic compost called black gold by gardeners! The super rich liquid produced is great plant feed. Google wormery for tips and local suppliers.

A JOURNEY FROM HOUSE TO HOME THEN We designed this the year of the tsunami. We wanted to rethink the idea of home, to live inside-out and in tune with our environment. We built using recycled and recyclable materials. NOW This is an uncomplicated home, designed for simple, sustainable living. All waste is processed by worms and turned into fertiliser, and our roof is solar panelled. When were here we tend to live out in the courtyard, even in winter. THE FUTURE As the kids grow, the way we live here changes they want friends over and parties! This place can adapt, its open but you can do your thing away from everyone in the different spaces.
live from IKEA FAMILY 51

Learning as we go
EXPERIENCE ISNT EVERYTHING! Rachael: Weve been designing other peoples houses for decades so when it came to our own, we knew exactly what we wanted or thought we did! Shane: Kids change your perspective. Rachael and I wanted to create a home thats just a step up from camping luxury camping. But we had to tone our idea down! We lived for a while in a caravan that was surrounded by walkways. The kids were always scared they thought goblins lived between the decks! So we made sure our home felt secure. At night the back door goes down, the gate gets shut. Not very tent-like, but it stops the goblins getting in!
Like the bedrooms, the kitchen has a roller door instead of a back wall. It opens up on to the courtyard so even when Shane and Rachael are cooking, theyre still part of the social activities. They designed the outside area to be as comfortable as possible. When you live outside as much as we do, you have to make the outdoors comfortable and exible its like any other room in the house, says Rachael. Our chairs fold away when not in use and the table extends when we have guests.

Learning as we go

Shane and Rachael rent their house out for 150 nights of the year, so it has to be exible. They have made banquette seating in the living room using fabriccovered mattresses. The covers are easy to remove, wash or update, says Rachael. Were relaxed about having unexpected guests as the seats make excellent beds! Storage under the seats means blankets, board games and magazines can be stowed away when not in use. We try to make it easy to keep on top of mess, says Shane. We dont want to spend our time here cleaning!
PHOTOGRAPHY CHRIS COURT WORDS JIM MERRETT

NATURAL INFLUENCES Shane: Seal Rocks is still a shing community, so weve made an effort to design a structure that ts with all the old shermens huts, which were built in the 1950s and 1960s. Rachael: Thats why weve gone for quite retro colours, which were inspired by the surrounding forest. Theres the green of the eucalyptus trees and the brown of the bark. The orange comes from some fungi that we found. The kids bedroom is green, blue and brown the colours of a rock pool.
A GOOD IDEA Need to make room for extra dinner guests? Extendable tables help but why not also add a bench to your seating mix? Theyre a relaxed way to t more in! Try the NORDEN bench l NORDMYRA chair $69/ea W47xD48, H78cm. White/birch. NORDEN dining table $599 W220/266xL100, H75cm. Birch.

A greener life
Find out how IKEA is working with real families to make a sustainable life at home that little bit easier
Hello, my name is Ann-Soe Gunnarsson and Im project manager of Sustainable Life at Home, a new scheme in partnership with WWF designed to inspire people to live a greener life at home. Weve taken nine real families our ecorators in Kalmar, Sweden, and have worked with them to uncover the everyday challenges of trying to live in an environmentally friendly way. Through a series of home visits and in-store seminars we are giving them the tools to live more sustainably. We hope these ecorators will become our green ambassadors to inspire others to live more sustainably, and spark ideas for future product development. Hanna Rydn, in-store coordinator Its so exciting that we got to pilot the project at the Kalmar store. Its been a learning curve for me because when it comes to being sustainable at home, Im just an amateur like everyone else! Choosing the families was really hard we looked for a range of households who had reached different levels in their eco efforts. We interviewed about 300 people to nd out how they lived, and how they wanted to live. Emil and his sons (right) stood out because he was a single working dad, who really wanted to live more sustainably and pass the message to his sons, but needed practical solutions to t his life.

EMIL SANDEBCK
Emil lives with his sons Joey and Jimmy in an 80m2 apartment. Its really so important to educate young people to be environmentally aware, so I make a real effort with my sons. But I do struggle with sorting my recycling. I am so busy that I nd it hard to be organised, and everything ends up stuffed under the sink, so Im looking forward to getting some good advice from IKEA. Theyve already suggested I use a cart to take all the recycling to the bins outside which saves lots of time! Were all vegetarian which means we have a smaller carbon footprint than meat-eaters. And we go a step further by buying local produce and even growing our own. Its great for the kids to plant tomatoes, watch them grow and taste the results of their work!

MORE IDEAS Get involved! Send your green problems, or eco ideas to homes@IKEAFAMILYLIVE.com, for the chance to win a SUNNAN lamp

There are smart ways to live sustainably at home, but not enough to make it simple. We hope this project will identify better solutions to everyday choices

We fill our home with things that tell stories

Mikael and I exchanged a thousand messages online before we actually met we shared so many stories it was like we were old friends! Its not that we had many common interests, but we had common values, and thats what counts. When we decided to buy an apartment together in Stockholm a year and a half later, we both knew we wanted somewhere old, somewhere with a story of its own. I think everything becomes more interesting when it ages. Even people.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR VIEW I created a place where I can enjoy a coffee and the view by putting a slim occasional table in the window. I like to dress my windowsill with a mixture of fake and real owers so theres something nice to look at even on grey days.

CREATE A MEMORY WALL I made a wall of our relatives in the kitchen, says Mia. Theyre all mixed up. His grandfather next to my grandmother and so on. Were all family now. I like the stories that come with them. This man was spoiled by his daughter, that one was the gardener...

DISPLAY THE THINGS THAT YOU LOVE AND INSPIRE YOU I get lots of ideas from blogs and books, and like to display my favourite things on shelves to get my guests talking. The car number plate is from our old car which we bought in Germany. In Mikaels place where we lived before, the kitchen was so small only one person could cook at a time. Now one of our greatest pleasures is cooking side by side. We always eat together in the evenings, and we love having dinner parties too the kind where people stay all night talking. Its great having guests here because the place feels big and open and we can talk to them while we cook. l FAKTUM/ABSTRAKT high-gloss white

THE JOURNEY FROM HOUSE TO HOME

THEN My grandmother did traditional birch bark crafts, and was the inspiration for the lights that hang down the side of the cupboard in my bedroom. I think knowing your heritage is so important. Otherwise how can you tell the little stories you pick up to your children? NOW I like to mix old and new things because the contrast brings them to life. When I pick something new I prefer something very modern, like the lamp by my bed. And of course it has to be very practical. And we have to need it. THE FUTURE We are living the dream now! But when we nally grow tired of the city, wed like to move to the countryside, start a family, renovate an old house with a barn. We are home people!

MY FAVOURITE THINGS
My Stockholm apartment is full of things Ive collected and inherited. I like the memories that come attached to old things - like Mikaels grandmas rugs in the hallway, and my grandmothers bench in our bedroom. My sister and I used to sit on it in her kitchen and it reminds me of those happy days. If I had to describe my style, I would say its eclectic. I like to mix old and new, because I think the contrast brings them to life. When picking contemporary furniture, my preference is for very modern, with no fuss or frills. It has to be practical, and we have to need it. Having said that, I do think you can afford to have a sense of humour. Interiors should make you happy, which is why I like to hide little surprises around my house. Mia

A BIT ABOUT ME
NAME: Allison Egan AGE: 30 DOES: Interior designer SIZE: 65m2 HOUSEMATES? My husband Roger Where is your home? We live in a one-bedroom apartment in the Novena neighbourhood. Whats your favourite thing about your home? I love that it is open and airy but still feels warm and cosy. We love entertaining and having friends over. I think its a great challenge to create a space that is both layered and beautiful but not overly cluttered its an important balance! Where do you get your inspiration for your home? I am so inspired by our travels throughout South East Asia and all the different cultures and designs I have seen. I have a small golden painted lotus that we bought in Thailand, and it always makes me smile and remember our travels! Is there an area in your home that you feel is unnished? Is there anything from IKEA that youve had your eye on? I just love the new STORSELE rattan armchair. It has such a lovely shape and would be perfect in the corner of our bedroom with a fun, patterned cushion. Plus it would be a great place to pile up pillows at night or to sit down for a moment. I love having seating in the bedroom. Do you have any great space-saving ideas? One brilliant tip for living comfortably in a small space is versatility. Furniture that can move around the space as needed is ideal. Nothing has to be anchored in one spot feel free to experiment and move your furniture around! How do you make the most of the space in your home? I make sure to have lots of little details with character.
