Appendix 1 Explanation on skimming and scanning. Skimming and scanning are two techniques that can help readers quickly gain information from a book, magazine, newspaper or website without having to read every word. 1. Skimming Readers skim a text when they look it over quickly to get a general idea of the subject-matter. The reader is not interested in all the detail, getting the gist is enough. Skimmers run their eye down the page or screen looking for pointers that sum up the contents. 2. Scanning Readers scan a piece of writing when they quickly search it for specific information. For example, a reader might scan a biography of Abraham Lincoln, looking out only for significant dates. The reader would skip over descriptions of Lincoln's upbringing, his struggles and his achievements, stopping only to note the years. When running their eye over the text, they will look out for keywords relevant to their search.

Conclusion: If you need a general idea of a book's subject-matter, choose skimming. If you need to gather specific information from a newspaper article, choose scanning.

Exercise for Your Health Good afternoon to Madam Sharifah binti Zainal, principal of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Dato Undang Haji Adnan, teachers and pupils. I am honored to stand here and share with you how exercise may help to improve your health. Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps to live longer? Look no further than exercise. Exercise controls your weight where it helps to prevent excess weight gain or maintain weight loss. When you do any physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity the more calories you burn. An example of a very simple exercise is by taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Have you ever been worried about heart disease? Regular exercise will keep your blood flowing smoothly and decreases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In addition, it also helps you prevent or manage a wide range of health problem including stroke, depression and diabetes. As students, I am quite sure that most of you face depression and stress. Need an emotional lift? A workout at a gym or a brisk 30-minutes walk can help you. Exercise stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. Last but not least, exercise boosts energy where it improves your muscle strength and boosts your endurance. It helps to deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work efficiently. In order to stay healthy and energetic, please exercise regularly. It helps you to maintain a good health and for girls it helps you with your body shape. Thank you.
