CHAPTER 21 PROBLEM SET: Electric Charge and Electric Field; First Semester AY 2013-2014 Name: Recit Instructor/Section: Student

Number Course: INSTRUCTIONS: Provide a COMPLETE AND NEAT solution for each number. If the question is conceptual, provide an explanation. Put your solutions on a piece of yellow pad paper. If you will be using more than one sheet of yellow paper, please staple them together. BOX YOUR FINAL ANSWER. A deduction of 3 points will be given for unstapled papers. 1. Two point charges are located at (a, 0) and (a, 0) with charges q and +q respectively. What is the electric eld at point (0, 0)? 2. Two point charges, located at (a, 0) and (a, 0) with charges q and +q respectively, are immersed in a uniform electric eld E. What is the net electric force on the two charges? 3. Two identical conducting spheres A and B , with A having an initial charge Q and the other initially neutral, are brought into contact. After electrostatic equilibrium, the two conducting spheres are separated. What is the charge on B ? 4. Three identical, metallic spheres P, A and K are put in contact and a positively charged rod is placed near, but not in contact with sphere P as shown. After electrostatic equilibrium is reached, the rod is removed and the spheres are brought away from each other. What is the resulting charge of each sphere?

5. Consider 2 massive charges q1 = +1 C and q2 = 2 2 C. q1 is located at (0,2 m) and q2 is located at (2 m,2 m). What is the net force experienced by a test charge q0 placed at the origin? 6. Four equal point charges q are xed on the corner of a square with sides a. a.) What is the electric eld due to the other three charges on the bottom left charge? b.) What is the electric force due to the other three charges on the bottom left charge? 7. Consider two spheres both having positive charges. One sphere is located at the origin and the other sphere is located at x = L. The Coulombic force between the two spheres is 4F0 . a.) What is the charge on each sphere if the magnitude of the two charges are equal? b.) What is the direction of the force on the charge on the origin? 8. The earth has a net electric charge that causes a 150 N/C electric eld at points near its surface, directed toward the center of the earth. What magnitude and sign of charge should a 60-kg human have, so that the force exerted by the electric eld at the earths surface will overcome his weight? (Use g =10 m/s2 .) 9. A circular ring of radius r has a total charge q uniformly distributed around it. What is the magnitude of the electric eld at the center of the ring? 10. An electric dipole, with dipole moment p, consists of two charges +q and q separated by a very small distance 2a. Its center is on the x-axis at x = x1 , and p points in the positive x direction. The dipole is in a nonuniform electric eld, which is also in the x direction, given by E = Cx i, where C is a constant. Find the net force on the dipole. 11. Charges are placed on the corner of a square of side 2d as shown in the gure. What is the magnitude of the electric eld at the center of the square?

12. What is the Coulomb force acting on a -3-C point charge if the electric eld at its location is (5 i 3 j) N/C? 13. Cube A has initial charge 4Q and cube B has initial charge -2Q. Both cubes have the same dimensions and are conducting. They were made to momentarily touch each other. What are the nal charges of each cube a long time after touching? 14. What is the net electric force on +q0 given the system at the right? Each point charge has charge Q.

15. Consider a uniformly charged ring on the x = 0 plane, with radius r, charge density and coaxial to the x-axis as shown. What is the magnitude of the electric eld at: a.) the center of the ring? b.) innity?
