- Placement test
Because of Sogang is focus on speaking, the placement test consists of an oral interview with an instructor as well as a reading. Student should bear in mind that the test does not measure how much they know about Korean, but rather how well they can communicate in Korean. It normally takes 10 to 15 minutes, but if the interviewer wants to check your writing, it will take longer. Applicants can choose a date on which to take the placement test when they fill out the application form at KLEC site and KLECs staff will send an e-mail about possible time on that date. Additionally, there are two types of test and applicants may choose one of them. One is for students who can take the test in person at the KLEC office and the other is a phone call test for those who cant visit the office for the test. If the applicants cant visit the office because of they are abroad or far from Seoul, Sogang KLEC will call the applicants phone at the appointed time. In addition, if the applicant can only read and write the Korean alphabet( ), he or she does not need to take the test. If you inform the KLEC staff of this, you will place in the level 1 class for the students who already know the Korean alphabet but cant speak well. Lastly, the test result is about the same as the applicants Korean knowledge. However, if the applicant feels the class is too easy or difficult, the applicant can retake the test in first week of the term and move to another class according to the retest result.

- Student Visa
1. Get it at Korean embassy or consulate
KLEC will check your documents and send Sogang's bank information if your documents are okay you can also receive a certificate of admission, certificate of enrollment and official receipt from Sogang KLEC after you pay your tuition. You can get a student visa if you submit documents from Sogang KLEC to a Korean embassy or consulate. There are two kinds of visa that you can get through admission to Sogang. One is D-4 and the other is C-3. A D-4 visa is issued for students who are learning Korean language at Sogang university. It is often issued for students who study Korean language for more than 2 terms. (about 6 months) A C-3 visa is kind of temporary visa. You can stay in Korea for 90 days with that visa. This is almost the same as a tourist visa (B-1 type). However, a C-3 is better than B-1 because C-3 can change to other types of visa in Korea. (This is impossible with a B-1.) Therefore, if you get C-3 visa, but you want to learn Korean after your first term, you can change it to D-4 in Korea.

2. Change of status to college-attached language training (D-4-4) in Korea (information from http://www.hikorea.go.kr/)

- Housing
We know that the most difficult thing for an applicant who first comes to Korea is finding somewhere to stay. However, you must find somewhere by yourself. On the KLEC web site, we post information about boarding houses around Sin-chon area. If you want to contact the accommodations on the list, but have difficulty communicating in Korean, you can receive help from a real estate agent who can speak English fluently. Her name is Diane Cha and you can contact her via e-mail. (ysmisty@nate.com) But, if you choose to go through this real estate agent, you must pay a fee of around 100,000 KRW. In addition, Sogang has dorm but there are not enough rooms. Therefore, only 4 to 6 new students can enter the dorm every term. KLEC staff will mail you about vacant rooms information 1 month before the next term begins. Lastly, Sogangs students can stay in a business hotel around Sin-chon station for a reduced price. The hotels name is Casaville and you can find information about it at (http://www.casaville-shinchon.co.kr/). The price is 70,000 KRW per 1 day and 2 persons can stay in a room. If you want to stay at there, you must contact Mr. Jeong se-jin (sjjeong@htc21.co.kr) and let him know that you are a student of Sogang KLEC.
