Comparing Natural & Artificial Ecosystems

Before the farm

1.) What is required for plants to grow? Plants require: Soil Water Sun Seeds Carbon dioxide

2.) How do plants get their energy? Plants need Photosynthesis so they can grow through energy from the sun 3.) Why is photosynthesis important in this process? Photosynthesis is so important in this process because plants need the sun and carbon dioxide so it can convert into organic compounds and sugars for the plant to grow. 4.) Which of the requirements of plant growth can humans control? Humans can control the growth of plants by: - The area they put them in - The control over climate - If they put it next to a plant or something else other than a plant 5.) Where do roses originate from? Describe their natural environments. Roses originated from either Egypt or China.

At the farm
Meeting Kees Koomen What is the purpose of the farm? What are the different jobs on the farm? Take a photo of each job. Job: Description: Photos: Picking Choosing the most open roses and cutting them to their full potential.

Bunching

The people who work there, bunch the rosses and a bundle of 10 and cut them at a certain height

Disbudding

Cutting off different buds or branchlike things so the rose can concentrate on one shoot.

Bending

You partially bend the roses so you can get bigger and stronger roots.

Growing Technical Work

All the growing and technical work for the roses is controlled in the control room

Managing

Mr. Koomen and Mr. Allen are the people of manage and run the farm.

Cleaning

Brooming, moping, sweeping etc.

What are the different areas of the farm? Take a photo of each area. What happen in each of these areas, what part do they play in the growth of the roses? Area What happens here Photo Shed All the work happens here

Glasshouse

This is where all the growing technical work happens

Cool room Dam

This is where the flowers are preserved after picking They use the dam to feed water into the water tank is there isnt enough water.

Gas LPG Area

The LPG area gives warmth and heat to the flowers.

Water tanks

When it rains, the water from the roof goes into the water tanks. Then the workers have to add chemicals (pH) so they can use it for the roses.

Boiler

The boiler keeps the glasshouse warm at night

Coffee room

Where the hard working people relax

Transport/ Access

Mr. Koomen distributes the roses to shops around Melbourne and Victoria

Toilet

This is where the hard working people do their.

Meeting Mr. Allen Koomen

What is the purpose of a glasshouse? Where do they get the flowers from? How is the environment regulated? Take a photo of each factor. Factor: Description: Photo: Light Light is important in the growth process for the roses and is controlled by the shades

Temperature

Related to the LPG area

Humidity

The humidity is 65%70%. I think they have to regulate the humidity at that percentage so the leaves dont burn.

CO2

Improves the production of roses by 5%

Hydroponics

Hydroponics is when the roses are grown through a process where they are placed in a bowl covered in coconut skin. Then water runs through the skin and the roses start growing.

Irrigation System

Water is pumped through pipes which leads to casing underneath the roses.

Pest Control

Making other plants to attract pests from primary Plants.
