Dear members and friends of The Arc of Schuyler:

Our annual report is an opportunity to reflect on past accomplishments and say thank you to those who have been there for us and helped us throughout 2011. On behalf of The Arc of Schuyler, we want to thank our committed volunteer Board of Directors and committee members, our dedicated staff, as well as our members, business partners, and contributors for your time, your enthusiasm, and your vital financial support. Like many human service agencies, we are being challenged with the realities of the general state of our countrys economy. With less government support and the demand for us to do more with less in the future, The Arc of Schuyler must take a hard look at our past, evaluate what is currently working or not working, and reaffirm our commitment to our core values and principles. We must clearly define how we will direct our efforts toward promoting the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in their communities as equal and contributing citizens. We want to raise the bar beyond best practice in order to meet the demands and expectations that will be placed upon us. We have therefore set our sights at The Arc of Schuyler on providing opportunities for people to lead a life of purpose. In order to turn these words into action, changes are needed. Views will need to change from people with disabilities needing care to people needing supports to help them lead lives of meaning and respect. Wants will need to change from all supports must be government funded and provided by paid staff to people working more creatively in linking people to natural and informal supports in natual environments. We need to build our skills as advisors and adult educators, so we are teaching adult skills and interactions that will lead to opportunities for people to have normative and fulfilling adult social roles. We again want to thank you for your support and for choosing The Arc of Schuyler as your provider of choice, charity of choice, and business partner of choice. Sincerely,

Harold J. Hoffmeier, Jr. Board President

The Arc of Schuyler

Your Business Partner of Choice

Chronicle of a Progressive Partnership with Hobart and William Smith Colleges
The growing partnership between Hobart and William Smith Colleges and The Arc of Schuyler demonstrates how businesses, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions can choose to make The Arc of Schuyler their community partner of choice. One such endeavor is partnering progressive faculty from both The Arc and the colleges in an effort to promote a more diverse and inclusive educational experience. This multifaceted partnership enriches the lives of college students and people with developmental disabilities by providing multiple opportunities to learn from and with each other. This partnership began with The ARTS Experience a festival celebrating inclusion and the arts that has been held annually since 2010 at the Hobart and William Smith campus. Representatives of the Collaborative of the Finger Lakes work with faculty and students of the college to organize this annual festival. The festival provides people with developmental disabilities, college students, and the general public, opportunities to explore various means of expression through visual, musical, and performing arts. Mary Kelly, Assistant Professor of Education at the colleges, has played a fundamental role in organizing The ARTS Experience by serving as a liaison between the colleges and the collaborative agencies. The ARTS Experience is an incredible demonstration of a symbiotic relationship between the college community and people with developmental disabilities, Mary said. The festival workshops foster a learning environment that provides people with developmental disabilities and college students the ability to learn from and with one another. Jason Crane, who receives supports through The Arc of Schuyler, participates in the filmmaking workshops at The ARTS Experience. His familiarity with film, gained through instructive programs at The Arc, has enabled him to become a leader in the workshop by taking on a teaching role. Through his knowledge, Jason assists other workshop participants by teaching them camera operations and digital editing.

But the learning experiences began well in advance of the festival. This year, the colleges shared a technique to make beautiful coffeefilter flowers with the Collaborative agencies. People receiving supports through The Arc of Schuyler volunteered to make 300 of these decorative flowers that were distributed locally in promotion of the ARTS Experience.

Another unique project was initiated by senior, Lucia Berliner. Lucia, a Psychology major at Hobart and William Smith, enjoyed her internship at Ontario ARC so much that she decided to visit other regional chapters. The Arc of Schuyler was one of her many stops. While here, Lucia helped those we provide services to create a collaborative collage that was part of an art exhibit at the 2012 ARTS Experience Gala.

Conquering the Digital Divide

Mary Kelly is the kind of progressive and innately curious educator that everyone remembers long after their college experience ends. She is always looking for ways to enhance the learning experience and will go out of her way to make sure her students are kept current with societal changes. Executive Director, Jeannette Frank invited Mary to meet with key leaders at The Arc of Schuyler. Together, they helped define a direction for introducing better use of technology by adults with developmental disabilities. Mary discovered that many adults with developmental disabilities have not had the exposure to technology that their peers without disabilities have had. She realized that more needed to be understood about their level of interest in technology and how these new technologies would enhance their lives by offering new communication, social, leisure, and vocational outlets. The first step was to offer technology workshops to people receiving supports through The Arc. These workshops were led by The Arcs Information Technology Department and volunteers from Hobart and William Smith, including Mary Kelly and her students. Based on what we saw at these workshops, people we provide support to are certainly interested in using devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets, said Wendy Shutter, The Arcs Director of Information Technology. Through this type of education and outreach, we can build peoples independence by getting them comfortable with technology, and show them how to make it a valuable tool. The Arc of Schuylers next goal is to create a dedicated learning environment where people with developmental disabilities will have access to computers. Hannah Sorgi, a student from Mary Kellys technology class, has stepped up to assist The Arc in researching grants that will help fund this developing project. This is another example of where Hobart and William Smith Colleges orientation of lets all learn about this together has created a synergy and excitement at The Arc of Schuyler, with staff saying, we can do this and people with developmental disabilities teaching us the things we need to learn to provide supports that are meaningful and progressive, said Jeannette Frank, Executive Director of The Arc. We are excited to see where this partnership takes us.

Contributions from our members and friends can also help us ensure that people with developmental disabilities are not left behind in a complex culture that is increasingly reliant on technology.
