The jailer separates two persons Arvind and Bipin accused of being accomplices( partners) in a
crime. He then extends the same offer to both prisoners. If Arvind confesses and Bipin remains
silent Arvind will be freed and Bipin sentenced to 10 years' hard labour . Similarly If Bipin
confesses and Arvind remains silent , Bipin will be freed and Arvind sentenced to 10 years hard
labour. If Arvind and Bipin take up the offer and confess, each would have to serve 5 years. And
if both remain silent, the jailer would be forced to free them(as he does not have clear evidence).
The jailer gives them 24 hours to decide. It is obvious to Arvind and Bipin that the best option is
for both to remain silent. But since they are kept in separate cells and cannot confer with each
other, each worries about the same eventuality suppose his accomplice betrays him while he
remains silent. The probability that Arvind confesses is 0.9 .The probability that Bipin confesses
is 0.9.
