Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) is mandated for all bridge designs after 2007
The use of AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Specifications offers many advantages and was introduced in 1994 after expending more than $2 million and seven years of concentrated efforts by more than 70 experts in bridge engineering and thousands of hours of review of trial designs. You can learn about these design standards and put them to your advantage with the use of the current AASHTO LRFD Standards below. For more information about LRFD standards, please visit http://bridges.transportation.org.

AASHTO LRFD BRIDGE DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS, 4TH EDITION, US & SI EDITIONS

This major step in improved bridge design and more accurate analysis is expected to lead to bridges exhibiting superior serviceability, enhanced long-term maintainability, and more uniform levels of safety. This edition includes newly updated foundation specifications, as well as updates throughout. Based on the load and resistance factor design philosophy (LRFD), this book is the result of a five-year research effort under AASHTOs National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Project 12-42, and a continued effort through AASHTO technical committees. Since the 1st edition was published in 1994, the provisions have continued to be updated and improved based on continuing research and the experience of the user community. The new specifications have been systematically tested in trial designs, and are now fully implemented by 17 states, and partially implemented by all AASHTO Member Departments. As of October 2007, the LRFD design code will be mandated by FHWA for all projects using federal funding. Supersedes all previous editions and interims. The single-user CD-ROM contains both the standard and metric editions of the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 4th Edition and is included with the book. It includes the following features: Navigation menu and toolbar Separate U.S. customary and SI menus Hyperlinked and bookmarked articles, figures, tables, and equations Hyperlinked ASTM citations Hyperlinked index Full-text search Quick help 2007, Looseleaf with binder and single-user CD-ROM. 1526 pp.

STANDARD SPECIFICATIONS FOR MOVABLE HIGHWAY BRIDGES

The previous 1970 edition included certain American Railway Engineering Association (AREA) specifications that applied to movable bridges. The use of this data was approved by the AREA with the following qualification: The recommended standards and specifications of the AREA duplicated herein were prepared by that Association to apply to railway bridges. The AREA expresses no opinion as to their suitability for highway bridges and cannot be responsible for any highway applications thereof that may be adopted. This edition of the specifications includes some data from the AREA specifications and specifications for Hydraulic Systems taken from the current AREA specifications with some modifications. Therefore, the AREA qualification given above continues to apply to these specifications. A commentary has been included in this edition and provides comments on many of the specification changes. 1988. Looseleaf. 82 pp.

GUIDE SPECIFICATION AND COMMENTARY FOR VESSEL COLLISION DESIGN OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES, SINGLE-USER DIGITAL PUBLICATION
AASHTO is pleased to make available the Guide Specification and Commentary for Vessel Collision Design of Highway Bridges. Adopted in 1991, the Guide Specification was the first specification in the world related to the detailed analysis of the risk of ship and barge collisions with highway bridges, and the design of appropriate pier protection systems. The Guide Specification has not only been used by State DOTs in the United States, but by many other countries around the world in evaluating bridges for potential vessel collisions. In 1994, the Method II risk analysis provisions and requirements of the Guide Specification were incorporated into the new LRFD Bridge Design Specification. Although the need for the original Guide Specification has diminished due to its incorporation the LRFD Code, the Guide Specification remains an essential reference document for bridge designers in the U.S. and internationally because of its extensive commentary on vessel collision issues, and the inclusion of additional methods (Method I Deterministic, and Method III Benefit Cost Analysis) for determining the appropriate design vessel for use in a vessel collision analysis. These methods are not discussed in the LRFD Code, but are included in the LRFD Code by its reference to the 1991 AASHTO Guide Specification. 1991. 148 pp.

AASHTO members have long recognized the benefits of cooperative efforts to develop, maintain and enhance computer software products. In todays world of rapidly changing technology and increased demands on transportation departments, cooperative software development offers participants a unique opportunity to work together in addressing commonly perceived needs and problems. By allowing agencies across the country to combine their resources, the cooperative development program provides enormous economies of scale, particularly in comparison to developing and maintaining custom solutions. This approach results in significant cost savingsduring the initial software development and throughout the software product life cycle. The cooperative development method also produces more robust and better maintained software products, and keeps members in charge of the products future by fostering an environment where the users guide enhancement activities.

GUIDELINES FOR GEOMETRIC DESIGN OF VERY LOW-VOLUME LOCAL ROADS (ADT400)

Guidelines for Geometric Design of Very LowVolume Local Roads (ADT400) addresses the unique design issues highway designers and engineers face when determining appropriate cost-effective geometric design policies for very low-volume local roads. This approach covers both new and existing construction projects. Because geometric design guidance for very low-volume local roads differs from the policies applied to high-volume roads, these guidelines may be used in lieu of A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, also known as The Green Book. Design values are presented in both metric and U.S. customary units. 2001. Paperback. 96 pp.

A GUIDE FOR ACHIEVING FLEXIBILITY IN HIGHWAY DESIGN

Context-sensitive solutions (CSS) reflect the need to consider highway projects as more than just transportation facilities. Depending on how highway projects are integrated into the community, they can have far-reaching impacts beyond their traffic or transportation function. CSS is a comprehensive process that brings stakeholders together in a positive, proactive environment to develop projects that not only meet transportation needs, but also improve or enhance the community. Achieving a flexible, context-sensitive design solution requires designers to fully understand the reasons behind the processes, design values, and design procedures that are used. This new AASHTO Guide shows highway designers how to think flexibly, how to recognize the many choices and options they have, and how to arrive at the best solution for the particular situation or context. It also strives to emphasize that flexible design does not necessarily entail a fundamentally new design process, but that it can be integrated into the existing transportation culture. This publication represents a major step toward institutionalizing CSS into state transportation departments and other agencies charged with transportation project development. 2004. Paperback. 112 pp.

SEGREGATIONCAUSES AND CURES FOR HOT-MIX ASPHALT

Historically, segregation has been measured on a subjective basis with state inspectors determination based on visual information only. This is difficult because, particularly on surface mix, problems due to segregation may not appear for several months. Visual observation can identify only surface segregation, leaving that below the surface undetected. This report, jointly published by AASHTO and the National Asphalt Pavement Association, addresses segregation and how it can be eliminated to ensure the production of high-quality paving mixtures. 1997. The intent of this guide is to assist departments of transportation (DOTs) in identifying and pursuing opportunities for enhancing organizational performance. The research involved asking DOTs, via written surveys and site visits to selected agencies, to describe their organizational improvement programs and practices and to assess the impact of these methods on performance. The information gathered serves to document many specific best practices so that any DOTs desire to benchmark particular areas of interest can be expedited. The most important purpose of this research, however, is to provide a guide for CEOs and senior leaders to improve organizational performance. To achieve this purpose we searched for common themes among the DOTs that reported the greatest strengths in their approaches to improvement. Much of this guide is devoted to describing the commonalities that were discovered so that other DOTs can know not only what the characteristics of the best practices are, but also how the agencies approached the challenges of putting those practices in place. 2007. NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION COMMUNICATIONS FOR ITS PROTOCOL (NTCIP)
NOTE The NTCIP Standards are available to download to AASHTO members and affiliates at no cost from the NTCIP Web site at http://www.ntcip.org/order/specialoffer.nsp. AASHTO, in partnership with the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), with financial support from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is leading a national effort to develop and adopt the National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation Systems Protocol (NTCIP). NTCIP is a family of standards that provides rules for communicating (protocols) and vocabulary (objects) necessary for electronic traffic control equipment from different manufacturers to operate within a system. The NTCIP is the first set of standards for the transportation industry that allows traffic control systems using mix-and-match equipment, reducing reliance on specific vendors and customized software. Traffic control equipment includes signal controls at intersections, variable message freeway signs, environmental monitoring stations near bridges, cameras along streets and freeways, and other types of devices. For a description of each standard, regular availability updates, and a link to www.global. ihs.com for purchasing, go to www.transportation.org. Detailed information and status of standards under development can be found at the NTCIP web site www.NTCIP.org. In addition to standards, AASHTO and its partners have also developed a guide on how to apply NTCIP standards and have conducted a number of case studies on the application of the standards. The case studies include the application of dynamic messages signs in the states of Virginia and Washington; traffic signal systems in Phoenix, Ariz., Mesa, Ariz., and Lakewood, Colo.; and two environmental sensor systems (road weather information systems) in Minnesota and Washington. The guide and case studies may be downloaded free at www.ntcip.org/library/documents. In addition, the latest issue of the NTCIPnews newsletter is available at www.ntcip.org/library/documents.

NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION PRODUCT EVALUATION PROGRAM (NTPEP)

NTPEP is an AASHTO technical service program which coordinates large-scale demonstration projects on proprietary engineered products. NTPEP conducts field performance evaluation and laboratory testing on a wide array of highway safety products and maintenance/construction materials. All testing is performed by AASHTO member departments, or private testing labs, under contract to NTPEP. Manufacturers voluntarily submit products for NTPEP-coordinated evaluation. Test results are widely used by state DOTs for purposes of product prequalification (QPL). Founded in 1994, NTPEP typically produces 15 evaluation reports per year on hundreds of product brands. In mid-2003, NTPEP launched its NTPEP DataMine, offering online access to certain reports with analytical capability and graphical presentation of results. For a current list of NTPEP reports, visit the NTPEP bookstore at www.ntpep.org.

ABOUT AASHTO
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Ofcials (AASHTO)
is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association that represents member highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. It is the only association that represents all five transportation modesair, highways, public transportation, rail, and water. Its primary goal is to foster development, operation, and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system. Membership to AASHTO is on an agency basis. AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, 4th Edition, US & SI Editions

This major step in improved bridge design and more accurate analysis is expected to lead to bridges exhibiting superior serviceability, enhanced longterm maintainability, and more uniform levels of safety. 1526 pp.
