Chapter 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This chapter presents the research methodology that will be used in the study.

This includes the research design, research setting, respondents, sampling method, sample size, data gathering procedure, and statistical treatment of the study. RESEARCH DESIGN The research design that will be used in this study is descriptive research. According to Polit and Beck (2010), the purpose of descriptive studies is to serve, describe and document aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs and sometimes to serve as a starting point for hypothesis generation or theory development. Using descriptive type of research definitely fit the aim of the study which is to provide an accurate and valid representation of the effects of using social networking sites to the study habits among third year nursing students of Ateneo de Cagayan Xavier University school year 2013-2014. RESEARCH SETTING This study will be conducted at Xavier University- Ateneo de Cagayan. From a mere two-storey wooden building that schooled 17 students when it was founded in 1933, Xavier University (XU) has grown drastically and immaculately 75 years hence, acting as intellectual home to some 10,000 students, 750 faculty and staff. There are currently 8 undergraduate colleges in Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan, namely: College of Agriculture, College of Arts and Sciences, College of

Business and Management, College of Education, College of Engineering, College of Computer Studies, College of Nursing, and Center for Integrated Technologies. In this study, the chosen respondents are from the College of Nursing, specifically the 3rd year students of School Year 2013 - 2014. June 1989 signaled the beginning of Xavier University College of Nursing through the efforts of Rev. Fr. Ernesto Javier, SJ and Rev. Fr. Emetrio J. Barcelon, SJ. It started with the leadership of two pioneering nursing administrators: Ellen P. Abear (Dean) and Ramona Heidi C. Palad (Assistant Dean). It was given government recognition by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in 1992 and graduated its first batch of nursing graduates in March 1993 with a 100% passing average in the Integrated Nurse Licensure Examination (NLE) given by the Professional Regulation Commission Board of Nursing on August 1993 in Davao City. It has since gone through a decade of challenges and financial odds. It was phased out in the year 2000 but was reopened in 2002. It continuous to champion excellence and commitment of service among its graduates thus catapulting Xavier University into top performing school of nursing in the Philippines during the Nursing Licensure Examination given by the Professional Regulation Commission Board of Nursing. SAMPLING PROCEDURE In this study, the respondents will be the third year students of Bachelor of Science in Nursing school year 2013-2014. This study will utilize the non-probability -purposive sampling design with the reason that inclusion criteria will be considered that includes: the respondent must be a

37

member of at least 1 social networking site, a regular nursing student, and is between 17 to 25 years old. The researchers will take and cover the sample size which is 10 students, which is 10% of the population frame. The sample size will be computed with the use of finite solution, which is used when the population is countable, and will be taken from a population frame of 95 students, per given by the colleges administration. The population frame as mentioned above covers all the students of Third Year Bachelor of Science in Nursing school year 2013-2014. RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS In gathering the data, the instrument that will be used is only a 16-item researcher made questionnaire which is divided into 2 parts. Part I is designed to generate information about the demographics of the respondents which includes the name, age, and gender. Part II is divided into two parts. This part aims to identify the behaviour of the respondents basing on the: (1) use of social networking sites and (2) study habits. The pilot test of the questionnaire will be conducted during the summer of year 2013 to check whether our questionnaire is reliable and valid. The pilot test will be done by giving the test questionnaires to the respondents included in the sample size. It will be conducted on the selected incoming third year nursing students of Xavier University. For validity and reliability, the questionnaire will be subjected to consultations of experts namely Ms. Dinah Banaynal, a former Xavier University faculty from the Psychology Department and Mr. Eric Rudinas from the Xavier University Mathematics Department.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE The data will be gathered during the first semester of school year 2013-2014, during the month of July, through a 16-item researcher-made questionnaire. The purpose of the study will be explained before giving the questionnaire and its attached consent letter, as well as the duration of time it takes to finish answering, which is 8 minutes. Moreover, the respondents will be assured that confidentiality and anonymity will be maintained. The gathered data will then be collated by the researchers and the results will be analyzed and interpreted. SCORING PROCEDURES The effects of use of social networking sites on the study habits will be measured through a 20-item questionnaire made by the researchers themselves and will be scored and coded as follows: To measure use of social networking sites: 5 Always, 4 Frequent, 3 Sometimes, 2 Occasionally and 1 Rarely and was computed and interpreted as: (Refer to Table 1) To measure behavior related on study habits: 5 Outstanding, 4 Very Good, 3 Good, 2 Satisfactory, 1 Needs Improvement and was computed and interpreted as: (Refer to Table 2)

STATISTICAL TOOL Descriptive and Inferential statistics will be used in this study. It involves the collection, presentation and description of numerical data. Descriptive statistics is the discipline of quantitatively describing the main features of a collection of data. Meanwhile in inferential statistics, the data is used to learn about the population that the sample of data is thought to represent.

41

For problem 1and 2, descriptive statistic tools; Frequency Distribution and Percentage, will be used to determine the profile of the respondents. This tool creates a table that consists of the respondents corresponding number and percentage. For problem 3, inferential statistic tools: T-test and F-test will be used to determine significant difference on the effects of using social networking on the study habits of BSN3 students.
