Lesson Title: States of Matter Class size: 28 Subject: Physical Science Grade level: 8th Standards: S8P1. Students will examine the scientific view of the nature of matter. c. Describe the movement of particles in solids, liquids, gases, and plasmas states. g. Identify and demonstrate the Law of Conservation of Matter. Objective: Students will be able to identify and describe the movement of the four states of matter. Essential Question: How can do particles move in each state of matter? Assessment: Formal: Picture Collage. Teacher will check understanding of the movements of each state of matter. Informal: Student participation. Materials: Pencils Paper IPads, IPods, Smartphones, laptops (BYOD program)

Activities: 1. Students complete a journal activity using the i-nigma app. The students will scan the following barcode to complete their journal entry. (Students were introduced to the four states of matter in the previous lesson.) Students are to write the journal entry on a sheet of paper.

2. Students will be grouped in pairs to ensure each student has access to a mobile device. Each pair will have at least one mobile device (IPod, IPad, Tablet, and Smartphone). The students will be asked to identify, to their partner, the four states of matter (solid, liquid, gas, and plasma).

3. Students will then use the Brian Pop App to view a video on the movements of the Four States of Matter. Students will use the schools login information. Once logged into the app students will search States of Matter. Students are to watch the video and take the quiz together. The quiz is to reinforce the information from the video. It is not for a grade. If the app is not working students may use the Internet browser on their mobile device to access the video and quiz. http://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/statesofmatter/ 4. After all students have taken the quiz the teacher will ask volunteers to provide a visual representation of the movements of each of the four states of matter. (Solid- students

will stand close together. Liquid- students stand a little farther apart and are sliding past each other. Gas- students spread out and bounce around the room. Plasma some students leave the room to provide more space between them.)

5. Students will then create a picture collage using the Pic Collage app. In pairs, students will take four pictures of different objects in the classroom. (Teacher will have different objects placed around the room. Ex. Glass of water, balloon filled with Helium, neon lights, soccer ball, etc.) The students are to take one picture of each state of matter. They will then create a picture collage labeling and describing the movement of each state of matter. An example would be the description of a picture of balloon filled with Helium would be- gas: particles move quickly and have no definite shape or volume. One collage per pair of students. Using the same app the students will email the collage to the teacher. 6. After the students have emailed their picture collage to the teacher the students will play a game on the Science 8 app. The students can work together to complete the first level States of Matter.
