EXPERIMENT 3 : CALIBATION OF VERNIER CALLIPERS

Aim: To calibrate the vernier calliper About: Calibration of vernier calliper can be done using slip gauges i.e. mirror finished rectangular blocks of alloy steel having different sizes & error less than one micrometer. These blocks can be joined together by sliding polished faces over each other to get desired length. Measuring this length & comparing the actual reading, we can calibrate the equipment.
Equipment:

Vernier calliper (Wikipedia) Parts of a vernier caliper: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Outside jaws: used to measure external diameter or width of an object Inside jaws: used to measure internal diameter of an object Depth probe: used to measure depths of an object or a hole Main scale: scale marked every mm Main scale: scale marked in inches and fractions Vernier scale gives interpolated measurements to 0.1 mm or better Vernier scale gives interpolated measurements in fractions of an inch Retainer: used to block movable part to allow the easy transferring of a measurement

EXPERIMENT 3 : CALIBATION OF VERNIER CALLIPERS

Conclusion:

Thus from the errors that we obtained, we see that the error in vernier 2 is more and shows a significant deviation for high range values. The vernier must be calibrated so that their errors dont go over the limit of the acceptable tolerance levels. Simple calipers are uncalibrated; the measurement taken must be compared against a scale. Whether the scale is part of the caliper or not, all analog calipersverniers and dialsrequire good eyesight in order to achieve the highest precision. Digital calipers have the advantage in this area. Calibrated calipers may be mishandled, leading to loss of zero. When a calipers' jaws are fully closed, it should of course indicate zero. If it does not, it must be recalibrated or repaired. It might seem that a vernier caliper cannot get out of calibration but a drop or knock can be enough. Digital calipers have zero set buttons. Take care to avoid parallax error when reading the vernier scale. Align the line of sight perpendicular or horizontal to the measured point of the graduation
