Listen, stop telling Malaysians to leave, leave, leave

BY MICHELLE TAM THE STAR

Bung Mokhtar and Azran

PETALING JAYA: Grow up and stop asking people to leave the country, that is the viewpoint of Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) chief executive Wan Saiful Wan Jan.

To him, it is unacceptable to ask another Malaysian to migrate just because of difference in opinions. In reality, every single one of us belongs to the country, and the country belongs to us. If A can tell B to move out, B can tell A to do the same, he said. Wan Saiful advocated the need for maturity, especially from politicians who continuously leak these kind of suggestions. They need to realise that time has moved on. These attitudes are too childish for the era we are in now, he said. MCA vice-president Gan Ping Sieu believed those who made such statements were in need of a basic education on democratic principles as there had to be room for disagreement. Such remarks are uncalled for, no matter who utters them. "Reasonable opinions may differ and we should cherish the deliberation of differing views and ideas with the objective of betterment. Dont be a sore loser, he said in a phone interview.

Wan Saiful and Gan were commenting on a speech in Parliament by Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin who took to task Air Asia X chief executive officer Azran Osman Rani for calling Utusan Malaysia a racist newspaper. On June 30, Utusan in its Awang Selamat column told DAP publicity chief and Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua to migrate to Taiwan or Hong Kong if he did not approve of Ramadan bazaars in Malaysia. MIC vice-president Datuk S.K. Devamany felt that statements from one or two did not reflect the spirit of the countrys leadership or people, as Malaysia was an example of the spirit of unity. Perhaps those statements were a manifestation of frustrations after putting in much work, said the Perak state assembly Speaker. He warned that leaders should be thoughtful of the rakyats feelings as such statements cut deep into peoples hearts. Devamany said the grassroots were changing due to a democratisation of the mind with social media.

People are going for a just government and transparency. We must reform the fundamentals of the nation rather than throw words that can hurt people and be detrimental to nation-building, he added. Umno supreme council member Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah termed this sort of talk out of date as Malaysia had celebrated 56 years of independence. Malaysians from all walks of life and ethnic backgrounds consider Malaysia their home. I strongly believe that they also love their country, he said. Though people may have differing views on matters, Saifuddin was firmly against asking people to leave the country. If they make statements or hold on to certain views that may contradict with official or mainstream points, they do it out of love for the country, he said. Saifuddin suggests that everyone make an effort to find out about the differing views of others.

If you strongly feel that your stand is right, then persuade them to agree with you. Dont ask them to leave! "We must be able to live in the 21st century, appreciate differences and accommodate people with different beliefs, he added.

Getting us at get lost - Jahabar Sadiq

JULY 02, 2013

The classic cliche from Umno is this - if you don't agree with us or criticise us, just get lost. Leave the country, now. And they wonder why they lost the popular vote in Election 2013. Barisan Nasional's Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin repeated the line today when telling off AirAsia X chief executive Azran Osman-Rani

for criticising Umno newspaper Utusan Malaysia over its racially-slanted articles after the May 5 general elections. Calling Azran "Melayu Biadap" while debating the royal address in Parliament this morning, Bung Mokhtar said Azran should move if he was not happy in Malaysia. The same line was said by Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in May when saying those unhappy with the GE13 results can also leave the country. Is that really a solution when the Najib administration specifically set up the Talent Corporation to bring back Malaysians who can push the country to a high-income nation by 2020? In 2011, then Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay told parliament that more than 300,000 Malaysians left the country between March 2008 and August 2009, compared to nearly 140,000 in 2007/. Many work in key sectors such as finance, technology and engineering. Do we want a talent like Azran to leave the country too? And according to World Bank statistics, some 1.48 million Malaysians or 5.3 per cent of the population were emigrants in 2010. Most left because of economic prospects. Do we want them to leave because they can't criticise the government or an Umno newspaper? Do we want to build a country of yes-men? Isn't that then a wonder why Barisan Nasional keeps losing more seats than ever? Because the leaders listen to yes-men who have no courage to call a spade a spade. We need constructive criticism and we need to tell off people who are racists. And we need to take criticisms for the good of the country.

Also, loyalty to the country should not be misconstrued as the need to be loyal to to the government. That we can leave to the likes of Bung Moktar and his colleagues. What the country needs now is not for loud mouth lawmakers to tell Malaysians to get lost for pointing out faults. What it needs is a government that can run a country well to ensure it gets the people's support. Otherwise, the people will tell the government to get lost at the next possible opportunity. * Jahabar Sadiq runs The Malaysian Insider.

Lawmakers, public slam Kinabatangan MP for childish outburst

BY AMANDA MURTHY AND RAJVINDER SINGH July 03, 2013

Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia had warned Bung Mokhtar not to attack members of the public who were unable to defend themselves in the House. Photo by Saw Siow Feng PETALING JAYA, July 3 Soon after Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin unleashed drivel in Parliament and told the AirAsia X chief to migrate, he was savaged by a furious public for his unbecoming behaviour in the august house.

The Kinabatangan MP was roasted for abusing his parliamentary privilege to attack a defenceless citizen in a childish manner. Social media roared in disgust against Bung Mokhtar who had in the past upset certain quarters with uncalled for remarks. The person in the centre of Bungs latest rant, airline boss Datuk Azran Osman Rani, was not available for a response to the attack on him being the biggest news in Parliament yesterday. Azran had taken issue with Utusan Malaysia for its incendiary headline Apa lagi Cina mahu which accompanied a recent article slamming the Chinese community for deserting the Barisan Nasional despite being given many concessions. In Parliament, Bung Mokhtar described Azran as 'Melayu terlalu biadap' (too rude a Malay) and told him to leave the country for criticising the paper. Many Malaysians wondered why an MP would waste time and raise the spat between a newspaper and an individual during the debate on the Royal Address. They said politicians were too often asking people to migrate when debating an issue instead of articulating the matter intelligently.

Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia had warned Bung Mokhtar not to attack members of the public who were unable to defend themselves in the House. Dont abuse your privilege as an elected representative to say things as you like. Please confine your debate on the issue, Pandikar said. Later, Pulai MP Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said Bung Mokhtar may have crossed the line. While every citizen has the right (to speak), I felt Bung Mokhtar was a bit harsh and he needs to move forward. Kluang MP Liew ChinTong said: Those who shout the loudest get the attention and that explains Bung Mokhtars actions. No citizen should be asked to leave the country. Social media users came out guns blazing. Bung Mokhtar however remained defiant and continued ranting in cyberspace. His reply to Twitter user @yugan82 who said Bung Mokhtar was not doing his work in Parliament and that he should leave the country: You can bark at the side of the road ... I dont care. Get lost! Bung Mokhtar was a trendsetter yesterday all for the wrong reasons. - See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/malaysia/article/lawmakers-publicslam-kinabatangan-mp-for-childish-outburst#sthash.hPC5N7Tg.dpuf

MP wants AirAsias Azran to leave country for criticising Utusan

B Y J E N N I FE R GOM E Z JULY 02, 2013

Barisan Nasional's Kinabatangan MP Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin today urged AirAsia X chief executive Azran Osman Rani to leave the country for criticising Utusan Malaysia. Calling Azran "melayu biadap" while debating the royal address in Parliament this morning, Bung Mokhtar said Azran should move if he was not happy in Malaysia. However, speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia advised the controversial Bung Mokhtar not to use his parliamentary privilege to launch attacks on civilians and government officers who were not in the house to defend themselves. Azran had earned Utusan Malaysia's displeasure after he had criticised the Bahasa Malaysia daily's "Apa Lagi Cina Mau" story following the general election story when Barisan Nasional had its worst result since independence. This led the newspaper to take aim at him and boycott advertising from the airline that he helms. However, CIMB Group CEO Datuk Nazir Razak came to his defence. Nazir praised Azran for his forthright attitude, saying that it was a "mark of a leader". Nazir's defence of Azran promptly saw Utusan Malaysia label Nazir as "anti-Malay". - July 2, 2013.

There are Lies, Damned Lies, and Utusan

Rencana Awang Selamat semalam dalam Mingguan Malaysia menuduh bahawa pemimpin DAP, Tony Pua dalam reaksinya mengeluarkan kenyataan provokatif. Beliau mencadangkan pasar Ramadan turut ditutup kerana didakwanya menyebabkan kesesakan lalu lintas. Ada pepatah orang putih yang berbunyi there are lies, damned lies and statistics. Saya rasa lebih sesuai jika pepatah tersebut diubah menjadi there are lies, damned lies and Utusan.

Utusan is at it again, PM no longer in charge

YOURSAY 'We are not talking about religion here but traffic so don't be so sensitive and ask a fellow Malaysian to emigrate each time you don't like what he says.' Utusan says Tony Pua hurt Muslims, told to emigrate Thinking Malaysian: DAP's Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua did not mention anything about Ramadan bazaars, only night markets and farmer markets. So it is time to sue Utusan Malaysia again. Wira: Night markets had turned into Ramadan markets Utusansure knows how to spin. Pua, sue that Awang Tak' Selamat and his toxic paper for RM100 million ringgit. Without Umno, Utusan would not dare to spew its venom with impunity. If we want to get rid of Utusan, we must first defeat Umno. Bamboo: When they can't win an argument, they display their kampung' thug mentality, which is chasing people they don't like out of the kampung.

11

Utusan, the home minister and even a former prime minister have manifested this trait by asking dissenters to emigrate. This just exposes their inferiority complex and insecurities because they are defending the indefensible. Hplooi: This is clearly deliberate misreporting with malicious intent to cause hurt. It is the same as in the case of Australian senator Nick Xenophon. This kind of mal-intention is evil and whilst not directly causing harm, can bring extremist elements to hurt Pua - all on the strength of a misreport. Utusan should not only be chastised but severely punished, otherwise they will continue committing their criminal assault on the Malaysian society. One day the consequences of such unabated assaults will lead to serious and long-term damage. Aries46: Poor Awang Selamat, he has to earn a living and the way he knows how is to make Utusan readers hate DAP and the Chinese - a case of killing two birds with one stone. So he spins night markets and farmers markets into Ramadan market and then play on Malay sentiments that Muslim feeling is hurt. Pua is a mere collateral damage in Selamat's grand scheme of things. The way of the towering Malay? Laudamus: Awang Selamat, don't hide behind this pseudonym. Be brave and reveal your true identity. We are not talking about religion here but traffic, so don't be so sensitive and ask a fellow Malaysian to emigrate each time you don't like what he says. It shows your immaturity and childishness. This Also Can?: What a cunning and devilish editor to twist and turn in his interpretations to poison the minds of the Malays and pit

12

them against other Malaysians. In my mind, he is not fit to be a top editor. Multi Racial: Actually Utusan executives should be prosecuted and put in jail. They are the biggest troublemakers in the country. They twist everything into racial issues. Until now, there have been no charges of sedition against their editors and journalists. What double standards we have in this country. Aniyan: This monster' called Awang Selamat has been issuing statements against the non-Muslims for years. He is destroying the racial harmony in Malaysia and nothing is being done to stop him. I think he has special immunity given to him by someone powerful. Anonymous #69337042: Pua, we support you, sue the Utusanfor its act of deliberate misreporting. Louis: Doesn't the closing down of Jonker Walk hurt the feelings of Malacca's Chinese? Indeed, Pua did not mention about closing down Ramadan markets. Utusan is at it again, trying to stir racial trouble. Praise be to God that Muslims in Malaysia no longer buy those lies, except a few of course. Not Convinced: And why is PM Najib Razak keeping his elegant silence? Isn't Utusan owned by Umno, the party which he heads? Rayfire: I am not sure if all Muslims are easily disturbed by these political statements, probably just a handful of overly hyper "all against me and my religion" types. Pua mentioned nothing about Ramadan bazaars, only night markets and farmer markets. Utusan however added some spice. No matter how much they are sued, unless they themselves realise how dumb they sound, nothing much will change. Enough of this crappy Blame the Chinese' game. Abasir: Unhappy Malays in Utusan should just get out of the

13

country. Home Minister Zahid Hamidi said anyone unhappy should leave and being the non-racist that he is, I'm sure he did not target nonMalays only when he made that brilliant statement. Heavenly King: Utusan, again Muslims are hurt? The Utusaneditors reckon Muslims are all tau fu'... so soft and vulnerable, easily flattened or smashed. Magnus: If Tony Pua should emigrate to Taiwan or Hong Kong for saying whatever it was that he said then I suggest whoever who made the suggestion should himself consider emigrating to Indonesia or India. Nonsense is surely as nonsense says and does.

Those cannot accept GE13 results should leave country: Zahid

Friday, 17 May 2013 11:23am The Sun Daily (Used by permission) by Pauline Wong PETALING JAYA (May 16, 2013): Those who cannot accept Malaysia's firstpast-the-post system should emigrate to practise their political beliefs elsewhere, newly appointed Home Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi said today. In his column in Utusan Malaysia, Zahid said the Pakatan Rakyat's claims of having won the 13th general election by popular vote were claims based on its interpretation of the list system, or single transferable vote. "These methods, as interpreted by the Opposition, are only used in countries where the head of state and ruling party are chosen in a proportionate representation electoral system where seats are won based on the number of votes received," he said. He added that Malaysia had inherited its first-past-the-post system from the UK. "Those who do not want to follow it can emigrate elsewhere to practise the list system, or single transferable vote system, used in republican nations. "If they are truly loyal citizens, they will accept the political and electoral system as enshrined in our Federal Constitution. They also have to admit the truth of defeat in the first-past-the-post system," he said.

14

Zahid, who was formerly defence minister, claimed the Opposition had confused young Chinese voters and their followers into blindly donning black in the recent protests over the poll results. "The people are fed-up with the antics of some of the leaders in PR who have dragged the young Chinese voters into feelings of hate, and have flamed the fires of racial sentiment," he said. The 13th general election saw Barisan Nasional winning 133 out of 222 parliamentary seats to form the federal government, but with 48.22% popular vote. The Opposition garnered 89 seats but had 51.78% of popular vote. This had led to Opposition leaders disputing the election results and organising a series of rallies to protest the outcome which they claim is unfair.

Newly-appointed Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Malaysians who are unhappy with the countrys political system should leave the country, stressing that loyal citizens should respect the rule of law. In his first opinion piece entitled Perhimpunan haram sebab tak terima hakikat gagal kuasai Putrajaya (Illegal gathering because refuses to accept failure in controlling Putrajaya) printed in Utusan Malaysia, Ahmad Zahid wrote that the illegal gatherings held across the country by Pakatan Rakyat (PR) was a form of escapism and the denial of the fact that it failed to take control of Putrajaya. The minister added that the opposition was overconfident with the support it received from voters: Even if it is true that the opposition had claimed a greater majority, the measurement used by the opposition had been manipulated to follow the list system or the single transferable vote system. Malaysia inherited the political system from the United Kingdom and many Commonwealth countries also use the first past the post system where political parties contesting in the election will only have one representative in each constituency with the principle of a simple majority of votes. If these people wish to adopt the list system or the single transferable vote used by countires with the republic form of government, then they should migrate to these countries to practise their political beliefs. Malaysia is not a country to translate their political beliefs, even if they are really loyal to this country, they should accept the political system and the existing system to form a government as enshrined in the Federal Constitution. He went on to say that opposition leaders, especially those from PR and DAP, have been irresponsible in confusing young Chinese voters and their followers who are politically blind to dress in black to protest againstthe result of the 13th general election which they believe is for them due to the popular vote. He also added that PR must recognise and accept that the voters have rejected their rule in accordance to the first past the post system:

16

Illegal gatherings organised as roadshows are just an escapism by the opposition to run away from the fact that they have failed to capture Putrajaya. The opposition was actually over confident) with the support of the voters and manipulated the various issues with false promises in its manifesto that they know will not be able to implement. People are getting fed up with the behaviour of a number of opposition leaders who are dragging in the young, especially those of Chinese descent, by fanning the flames of hatred and racism in a pluralistic society which has already fostered a sense of harmony. The opposition is also questioning the authority of the Election Commission (EC) which had allegedly manipulated the votes. It is an outrageous accusation when the EC have observed most of their demands including the use of indelible ink that is only used by the third world countries. And cue the pandemonium.

Zahid Hamidi in hot water over comment that Malaysians unhappy with political system should leave

The new Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

SUBANG JAYA (MAY 16): The new Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has gotten himself into hot water over an article published in Utusan Malaysia today in which he said Malaysians who are unhappy with the countrys political system should leave the country. Twitter and FaceBook have been buzzing with comments about his opinion piece entitled Perhimpunan haram sebab tak terima hakikat gagal kuasai Putrajaya. (Illegal gathering because of inability to accept failure in taking over Putrajaya). Most of the comments were critical of his comments. One said Zahid Hamidi was telling 52% of Malaysians to leave. Secretary-general of DAP Lim Guan Eng slammed him saying he had no class. Lim tweeted: No class! New home minister tells unhappy Msians who r unhappy wid countrys political system 2emigrate. In another tweet, Lim said: Zahid Hamidis perverse logic-If PR supporters have 2 emigrate bcos BN won, then will BN supporters leave Pg Sgor n Kelantan 2other states? In the opinion piece that he wrote, Ahmad Zahid stressed that loyal citizens should respect the rule of law. He wrote that the illegal gatherings held by Pakatan Rakyat across the country was a form of escapism and denial of the fact that it failed to take control of Putrajaya.
