The Green Weekly

Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club Inc
1. Welcome
Draws are the name of the day:
The last round of matches before the school break for the juniors (1 more round for the youth team) saw the return of the less often seem draw. This season we have had only 6 draws from 79 games yet the round gone saw 4 draws from 10 matches. During the whole of the 2012 and 2011 seasons we had 10 and 11 draws respectively. The undefeated U8 Green felt their first game of the season where they did not walk away with a victory. The result was a goalless draw, something else that is very rarely seen. A review of the record books shows there were no goalless draws in the previous 2 seasons!!! The U6 team had a 1-1 draw, another unusually low scoring result for this age group. Our U12 continued their competitive resurgence with also a 1-1 draw while the U9 White had an exciting 3-3 draw. This weekend our U14 Youth team play against the New Town Eagles. The form guide for the past four games (most recent first) for Cygnet is L W L W while New Town is W L D L. The past meeting saw New Town score twice when coach George (refereeing) bungled extra time (Eds note: that is a bit harsh) to see a 4-2 victory. Recent results indicate we have a fighting chance to reverse this first result but we will have to be on our game (and hoping for some recoveries from niggling injuries).

This week Played 10 Won 3 Lost 3 Draw 4 For 21 Against 15 This season Played 89 Won 47 (54%) Lost 31 Draw 10 For 320 Against 204
Above is only for Juniors

Special thanks to everybody who helped with canteen on the weekend. With 80% of our games at home, it was a long and hectic day for all involved, especially Alison Nicholas who every week ensures canteen runs smoothly and is fully stocked. Top job Al!! Last Friday night saw a number of us head on to the bottom pub for the Annual General Meeting. For those interested the meeting notes will be out soon, but suffice to say the club is going along quite nicely. We have agreed to move our AGM from June to the beginning of next season so roles are related to a full season. The committee has remained as is until the next AGM early next year with Alby Hooper joining the committee. The next round of games for the Juniors will be the 27th July and training WILL be on this Friday. Note the weather looks ominous but unless it is teaming with rain training will be on. Youth training is cancelled for Thursday night. We will aim for a training session before the game on Saturday so please arrive no later than 11:30am Sat so we can do some technique training prior to smashing New Town. COACHES BOX Back-stabbing, Front-stabbing, and, Side-splitting Laughter.

Last Friday evening at Cygnets Bottom Pub was no place for the feint hearted as the Sea Dragon Cactus gathered to elect its committee at the annual AGM (Annual General Meeting) which is held annually..most years. There were shady characters and men (and woman) who lie through their teeth without batting an eye-lid. Hardened, brutalized people wholl say anything to get them out of a spot or to secure that prestigious position at the Sea Dragons top table. We had numbers men stalking the corridors of power sending tit-bits by tweet to the throngs of paparazzi gathered outside waiting to feast on the merest hint of a juicy snippet regardless of how unappetizing it may prove. There were powerbrokers, king-makers, fixers and god-fathers, all hellbent on manipulating the final outcome. Weak members battled with their inner demons in deciding whether to be swayed by the soccer faction or the drinking faction and pondering whether a loss of nerve at this late stage could render them ineligible for pre-selection at next years AGM Jamboree in February which once again is being held annually or at least once per year and once also on a leap year which incidentally next year is not. In the event despite the trepidation being felt in the lead-up by so many club members this years annual event passed rather quietly and without any notable ructions in the party room with all committee members

being re-elected unopposed and Alby Hooper (Uniforms) and Janine Wendeling (House-speaker) elected to bolster the group. Well be back in February no doubt for the next yearly installment which no-one involved in the club will want to miss for the sheer drama, suspense, and, sheer sense of spectacle. On Saturday we took to the field against second placed University minus possibly our two top players Isaac Beecroft and Ryan Lottering. It was always going to be a tough ask. Certainly stand-in captain Jake Buckland worked extremely hard throughout across all areas of the park, cajoling and rallying his troops and exhorting them to run that extra yard and drag forth that extra decibel of supreme performance (Editors Note: Decibel??). Certainly we couldnt fault the efforts of the players, there were some good performances, passing combinations and indeed it was good experience for the players to step up minus their often go-to men. Hugh McGarry grabbed the goal he was always likely to get but in the end University just had that little bit of extra class, pace, fitness and know-how and in the second half they over-ran us to run out deserved winners. Weve got New Town Eagles on Saturday with whom we have a score to settle. To our collective relief the Youth Cup will NOT be going ahead on Sunday. Its been deferred to the Spring, with the first round scheduled to take place on Sunday 28 July, so dig out the board-shorts, sunscreen and kiss me quick hats. See you at training on Thursday.

Edition 12 6 July 2013 8. Match Reports Cygnet U/6

It was a very evenly matched Margate team that we faced, with some well rehearsed defensive strategies. We did dominate possession and had quite a few near misses at goals. Archie was in great form today, using great speed and ball control to stop the Margate runaways and start his counter attack. Charlie Gorringe scored a well deserved goal and came very close to squeezing a few more in. Abbey did some great ball steeling and defensive work. William was busy all over the field and was unlucky not break through for a goal this week. Charlie Hooper played a good solid game, attacking from all angles and getting oh so close. Flynn was right there in the thick of it and like all the other players found it difficult to crack the wall of Margate defenders. Cygnet U6 1 drew Margate Black 1 (Charlie Gorringe 1)

Cygnet U/7 Green

This was one of our closest and most nail biting matches to date. It was another contest against the only team in the competition to have beaten us. Coach Chris really got the team working on being hungry for the ball and kicking away from our goal at training-it certainly paid off in the game. The first half we dominated with some very close goals and the first goal of the game from Benny. The goal could be a contender for best of the season as it was shot from a very difficult angle. Rory was spectacular in defence and saved several goals from being scored by the other team. He did a particularly impressive slide across the goal. The second half the other team started to dominate as several injuries plagued our side. Huon showed us more of his very impressive footwork as well as some huge kicks down the pitch. Tommy was relentless in attack and very nearly scored several times - he really showed amazing endurance. Harry continues to show incredible improvement in his game with some great defence as well as moving more into attack. In the end the other team scored 2 goals in the second half which is a great improvement from last match which was 4-1. Again what really showed this week is how this team is becoming more cohesive and showing great support and care for one another. Chris is doing an amazing job as coach which isn't always easy with this very boisterous bunch! Cygnet U7 1 lost to Kingborough Lions 2 (Benny)

Cygnet U/7 White

The Kingbourgh Lions team were a real challenge with this game. They blocked, stopped and turned around our advances. The ball skills of both teams were evenly matched making this the most difficult game we have played so far. Our win was not an easy one which made it all the more sweet. Well done with all the great passing and setting up each other for the goal.

Edition 12 6 July 2013 Cygnet U/8 Green

This week the U8 Green ventured back to Lightwood to play the Kingborough Lions White. Before the game I told the kids that todays opposition is the next best team in the division (based on having played all our opposition so far) and combined with the vastly smaller goals than every other ground we play on, it would be a very tough game. This season we have only conceded 3 goals, and two of those were against todays opposition last time where we had a 5-2 win. The first half saw us dominate possession and territory, but we could not get many clear strikes on goal as the Kingborough Lions White was a very well-oiled defensive unit. The Lions managed a few forays into our half but did not really pose too much pressure on goalie Tristan. Upon the start of the 2nd half and the coach again refereeing as the opposition offered up no referee, the Lions put in an excellent 5 minutes of play that had us hustling in defense. The final 15 saw us return to controlling the ball in the opposition half, and a number of close strikes were made that on any other pitch would have been goals. In the end it was a 0-0 draw. A very unusual result at this level. Credit to the Kingborough Lions White who provided some fantastic competition. We await their return to Cygnet where the goals are twice the size!!! This was only the 2nd draw in two years for a number of these kids, and was a good game to really test both their attacking and defensive plays. It seems we now have some competition!!!!!

It is pleasing to report that Normal transmission has been resumed with the Sea Dragons back on the correct side of the ledger. In fact the score replicated our first encounter with Calvin Black. This match saw Sofia out injured with a fractured wrist and Callum absent so that there were no substitutes available. None the less it was a great opportunity for the team to play in the same defensive / midfield / offensive pattern with everyone in the same position for the duration of the match. Thanks should go to Toby and Archie for playing goalkeeper as it is usually a difficult role to fill short of an implicit coaching directive! Highlights for the coaching staff were: The structure and pattern that was kept by the defensive duo at the back. I could hear the talk between the defenders. The players listened to our request for quick throw ins to catch the opposition off guard. There were numerous examples of well placed throw ins that initiated an attacking response. There was a lot more commitment to put pressure on the ball by our strikers when Calvin had the ball

Passing, passing, passing with the best example when Griffin crisply passed a ball from the wing into Otis in the centre who dribbled deftly then struck the ball into the net.

The U9 suffered another loss this week when they faced the New Town Storm. The Greens seemed a bit off-form this weekend and the spark never quite seemed to take hold. Still, some good efforts from everyone and a nice goal from Oscar O. We have a few weeks off now to plan the comeback! Oscar L is looking forward to joining the team again next term. Enjoy the holidays! Cygnet U9 Green 1 lost to St Aloysius Sharks 6 (Cobi 1)

Cygnet U/9 White

Beautiful blue sky and sunshine this week made playing and umpiring a pleasure. We were a bit short handed with Ned and Saras away with their families for the weekend. Thanks to Leyroy and Cobi for doubling up and playing for our team and then their own. The last time these teams played each other, St Therese's came out a much stronger team with a 7-2 victory. So we had nothing to lose and played in that fashion for most of the game. Neither side scored for a good 10 minutes demonstrating the pressure in defence and attack being applied by both sides. A very even match. At half time St Therese's had scored 2 goals to our 1. Cobi did a great job as goalie making numerous saves with good support from Leyroy and Rory in defence. Riley, Romi, Toby and Ina played a good attacking game with a number of near misses at goal with Elliot and Codi moving around the field at great speed assisting the attack and the defence. The second half saw Elliot making some great saves as goalie restricting St Therese's to only one further goal with a second goal from our side keeping the game very tight. We had a stop to play as we resolved the issue of a child playing with a broken arm in a cast (on St Therese's team), and then continued on for Cygnet to score the last goal in the last minute of the game to even the scores. 3 all. A great goal to Rory and 2 to Codi with a lot of teamwork to be credited for the final result. Some great sportsmanship displayed on both sides during the match. Thanks team for a great effort today, and thanks for the parental support. . Cygnet U9 White 3 drew St Theses 3 (Codi 2, Rory 1)

U/10 Green
The U10 Green Machine fired on all 8 again this week, albeit against a decidedly weaker opposition. Passing combinations and movement without the ball were the coach's highlights for the day. It was very entertaining soccer to watch and everyone on the pitch contributed. Special mention goes to Kieron for his "coast to coast" goal. From goal box to goal box through 4 defenders to score - what a cracker! Cygnet U10 Green 4 def West Hobart 0 (Keiron 2, Save 1, Fynn 1)

U/10 White
A glorious day greeted us on the Saturday morning, slightly warmer than the previous week. The Cygnet team were showing more focus for their match against West Hobart Reds, after a solid training session on Friday. The game proved to be a cracker with both sides running and passing at a furious pace. The passing game for Cygnet had improved immensely with the team searching out the goals on several occasions in the first half. The opposition's goalie however was up to the task and defended his goals well, but late in the first half Sadie managed to avoid him and find the back of the net. The forward lineup of Sadie, Bobbin, Hamish and Marley was playing well searching each other out, ably backed up by Will in midfield who showed great class in chasing down the ball and sending it forward. The second half was a torrid affair with both sides having equal time in their respective goals. The defence of Cygnet, Toby in goals and the backline of Noah, Issac and Finn was consistent and up to the task of repelling the opposition. They showed great tenacity but towards the end the team started to tire and it was then that West Hobart managed to slot away two goals. Cygnet had a couple of opportunities towards the end but even the enthusiastic support from the sidelines could not convert for them. A great game by all the team who are showing constant improvement each match. Well done to all. Cygnet U10 1 lost to West Hobart Red 2 (Sadie 1)
