pel there like you do here in Canada!"
John K. Huk, back in 1962, pleaded
with me to go with him to preach in
these communist-dominated countries.
WE HAVE HEARD
"There stood a man of Russia and
prayed unto him, saying, Come over into
Russia and Poland and help us. And
after hearing these words, immediately
we endeavored to go into Russia and
Poland. ASSUREDLY GATHERING
THAT THE LORD HAD CALLED US
FOR TO PREACH THE GOSPEL UNTO
THEM."
WE HAVE GONE
In 1963, God, through His people,
provided funds for our first missionary
tour. We preached time after time in
European Center for Evangelism
Vienna, Austria
The sketch shows the general lay
out of the six-acre property of T.C.M.
1) Hospitality House
2) Greenhouse to be reconstructed as
radio studio.
3) Work Center and two apartments for
missionary families.
4) Printing Shop and apartment for one
family.
5) Gatehouse for onemissionary family.
6) and 7) Tool houses.
Russia and Poland. God indeed showed
that man could witness for Christ even
in the midst of atheistic communism.
In every church the voices of Chris
tians united in praising God for His love
and mercy, and then had one additional
thing in common -- "Give me a Bible!"
Back in America, in 1964 in response
to our appeal God, through His people,
provided $20,000 to print the smallest
Russian New Testament ever published.
These were soon in use behind the iron
curtain and another edition was printed.
Other missionary tours have been
carried out taking missionaries into

satellite countries in Europe several
times. In every country the gospel is
preached and souls are saved in re
sponse to the invitation of Christ.
WE ARE THERE
The task is overwhelming. The
voices saying "Come over and help us"
cannot be silenced. The occasional
missionary visit is encouraging and
helpful, but so much more needs to be
done.

Over the past eight years our mis
sionaries have carefully surveyed the
field and studied the situation and have
sought God's guidance in developing an
aggressive, efficient and effective mis
sionary program to take the gospel into
communist-dominated countries. Each
step forward has been presented to men
of God whose counsel we respect. They
have joined their faith and spirit and
prayers with the missionaries, and after
thorough consideration, decisions to
move forward for Christ have been made.
Every day of the week radio pro
grams prepared by our Russian radio
department are heard all across Russia.
We are there and we are being heard
EVERY DAY.
Our European Center for Evangel
ism is functioning in Vienna. These
facilities, contracted for only a few
weeks ago, provide a base of operation
for our entire MISSION TO RUSSIA.
Missionary tours start from here where
missionary families reside and plan
their work. A Work Center to provide
materials for distribution is here. In
tensive Bible Courses for visitors and
refugees from behind the iron curtain
are being held here now.
These facilities - -a large 17 bed
room Austrian Inn serving as our Hos
pitality House, three service buildings
housing the work center and missionary
families, and three other buildings for
other purposes -- are the means to an
end: the means to evangelizing -- wit
nessing -- for Christ in Europe. From
this centrally located facility, we are
reaching across the iron curtain to give
a hand of hope to those living in athe
istic darkness.
To pay for this European Center for
Evangelism, to do necessary renovation
to allow full use of these excellent
facilities, and to equip the printing,
radio, and visitation ministries requires
$3 30,000 over the next three years.
We must have $30,000 to cover the
money borrowed for the down payment
by March 31. We must have funds to do
necessary renovation to allow full use
of the facilities by May. Volkswagen
campers have to be secured by June.
Frankly, we need some large cash con
tributions right away to allow us to get
started- on all these necessary things,
or we will never be able to use these
tremendous facilities to meet their
potential this summer.
We have heard! We have gone! We
are there! But to do the job means we
need you to take advantage of this
OPPORTUNITY FOR INVOLVEMENT.

EASTERN EUROPE: I would like to
live in one of the European countries
where German is spoken more and from
where I can work for my people. I speak
and understand German and Russian
well but I would like to do more for
those in my country.
What I have seen and met amongst
the churches in the Free world over the
past three months has sort of left me in
a blind alley. I want to get settled in a
church. However, everyone I have visi
ted finds something against other groups
and wants me to take only his particu
lar side. But how can I do that, for you
see, all brothers in the Lord are equal
to me. I cannot speak against brethren
for the sake of a piece of bread. But,
as a human being, I must live and find
some kind of support. I believe that the
Lord will lead me and will help me to
live.
POLAND: I want to congratulate you
the establishing of Center for Evan
gelism in Austria. Our old continent is
full of churches, church organizations
and church missions, but we need more
share their excitement about the Euro-
evangelism now than any other conti
nent. I am sure that your center will
not do the whole work of evangelism in
Europe, this work needs a lot of people
and means, but I am sure also, that it
might be/ and will be/ a great contri
bution to that holy endeavor.
I have one suggestion more con
cerning the work of center of evangel
ism. I think it. would be better if you/ I
mean the center / invite sometimes
other young people except Churches of
Christ. It will enrich the fellowship and
help for some other Christian groups in
Poland and Europe.
I shall be very glad to visit Vienna
someday and I want to express my grat
itude to you in advance. I remember
still our talks.
FROM BEHIND THE IRON CURTAIN:
I received two copies of The Christian
for which I thank the Lord and you, my
dear brethren. Your work is so impor
tant for salvation of those who are
perishing. What can I or many others
with me do to repay you for your ser
vice? How can we assist you in pub
lishing of this magazine? There is no
other way except to pray for you and
that is what we are doing.

Center for Evangelism:
VIENNA, Don Poorman: We have been
here these months and can not find
words to express the possibilities, the
potentials, the need, or the appreciation
these people have. One person said
with tears in his eyes, "YOU MUST
NEVER GIVE UP THIS WORK!"
VIENNA, Dewey Thackston: (Reporting
on a recent missionary tour behind the
iron curtain) My trip was fruitful and
worthwhile, I was well received. Be
tween Thursday and Monday afternoon
I had just a little over three hours to
myself with the exception of afew hours'
sleep each evening. I spent a very in
teresting few hours with a brother who
showed me documents and photos and
recounted in great detail the early his
tory of the church here.
I preached and sang and the brother
you know served as my interpreter. I
spoke on Sunday two times in the one
church and then in the evening at an
other and was with the young people
afterwards, too.
One of the brethren who has been
with us here wants me to bring my fam
ily the next time I come to his country.
I told him we would have to think about
it. He says Mike (Dewey's 9 year old
son) is the youngest "brother" he has
ever met and wants the congregation
there to meet him as well.

Letters from Here . . .
Enthusiasm of Christians across America is illustrated by these letters
from Christian friends and supporters:
ONTARIO: I am enclosing a cheque for
the European Mission with my prayers
for the success of this great undertak
ing to have a Missionary Home or Center
for the spreading of the Gospel to the
Communist world.
MICHIGAN: After reading your good
news about the property in Vienna, I
just had to tell you how happy I am. It
made the dark and dreary day much
brighter for me. It brought tears of joy
to my eyes.
I was born and raised in Prague,
Czechoslovakia. My mother is Russian,
she is living in West Germany. I praise
the Lord for making it possible for you
to be able to take the Word of God be
hind the Iron Curtain. I thank God for
answered prayers. I know that many
Christian people are praying for this--
I am one of them.
TENNESSEE: I am sending an offering
for the purchase and remodeling of the
European Center for Evangelism in
Vienna. I pray you are receiving the
money needed for the down payment.
I feel sure everyone will appreciate the
opportunity this will offer for the win
ning of souls for Christ.
MICHIGAN: We are thrilled with what
God is doing in openingdoors into East
ern Europe and Russia. It sounds like
the ideal situation to have the new
Hospitality House in Vienna close to
communist borders.! guess God wanted
it so He brought it to pass.

A Report
to Our Friends
Isn't God wonderful! Two weeks ago
we mailed our brochures telling of the
European Center for Evangelism in
Vienna, Austria. Two weeks ago! And
already, as this is being written
(Dec. 21) we have received $4,905.90
toward the repayment of the $30,000 I
had to borrow for the down payment,
and commitments totaling $555.66 per
month over three years.
A husband and wife cancelled their
vacation plans and contributed $500.00!
A businessman in Canada made a com
mitment of $1,500! A longtime supporter
of T.C.M. made an additional commit
ment of $5.00 monthly, and this person
is on a fixed income!
God is good to have given us such
wonderful Christian friends as you. We
are a long way from the goal but we be
lieve you and otherChristians will join
efforts to make the MISSION TO RUSSIA
succeed for Christ.

MEMBER OP 1968 TOUR GROUP: God
has certainly led you to open the Euro
pean Center for Evangelism. The ex
periences! encountered as a member of
the Tour Group made such an impact
upon me that the whole course of my
life has been altered. I now see that
Christians cannot exclude people living
behind man-made "curtains" in making
known the love of Christ through His
Great Commission. I pray daily for resi
dents of Communist-dominated lands,
and my prayers are with you, too, in
your vital ministry for Christ.
These are days of tremendous
spiritual opportunity in which we find
ourselves. May God continue to use you
and your co-workers to His Glory.

A WEEK IN VIENNA

A telephone call from the travel
agent who arranges details for TCM's
MISSIONARY TOURS started a whole
chain of exciting events! He said,
"K. L. M. Airlines will give you a com
plimentary ticket to Vienna if you would
like to go sometime soon!"
After conferences with fellow work
ers in Toronto, the decision was made
for me to accept the offer. 1 left Toronto
January 4 and returned January 11, but
wnat a busy week!
Conferences at Hospitality House
I arrived in Vienna at noon, and
went directly to the European Center
for Evangelism where Barb Thackston
had dinner prepared. We spent the rest
of the afternoon and on into the night
discussing the work in Europe. Dewey
Thackston brought me up to date on his
recent journey into Poland, and he and
Don Poorman gave me the details on
their tour into Yugoslavia.
The Thackstons are living in the
Hospitality House this winter, while
getting their apartment ready in one of
the service buildings. They hope to
have this ready for occupancy and be
moved by the time the Chambers family
arrives in May. The Chamberses will
then become host and hostess for the
Hospitality House and Dan will oversee
the renovation and maintenance for the
European Center for Evangelism.
Renovation needed immediately
The property needs extensive plumb
ing, heating and electrical renovation.
The only rooms being heated this winter
are those occupied by the Thackstons
and by guests that are visiting. Wood
stoves (European style-ceramic tile)
are in each room, and require a lot of
attention to keep the house warm. All
water used must be carried more than
half a block from a well. Because the
entire house is not being heated, the
water had to be turned off this winter.
Obviously the Thackstons are
having an exciting winter, and enjoy
ing it!
Buildings in excellent repair
The buildings are in excellent
repair, however. They have been kept
painted on the outside and kept clean
on the inside. All the buildings are
solid. In the Hospitality House the
walls are so thick that no sound is
heard from one room to the next. Cer
tainly the estimate that it would take
four hundred thousand dollars to replace
this facility is not out of reason. Even
as I was there I could visualize the
many wayS we were going to use the
property in our work.
$330,000 needed for
European Center for Evangelism
But if we are to have it and use it,
we must meet the necessary costs. To
purchase and renovate this property and
secure the necessary equipment to
carry out the MISSION TO RUSSIA will
require $330,000 over the next three
years.
1) The cost of the six acres, the build
ings and furnishings is $110,000. We
believe this to be a real bargain.
2) Renovation adds another $110,000.
This figure includes five complete
missionary apartments, with kitchen
and bathroom fixtures; all plumbing,
wiring and heating in the Hospitality
House; commercial stove, dishwash
er, refrigerator and freezer for the
Hospitality House plus commercial
washer and dryer that will serve both
the Hospitality House and the mis
sionary families living at the Euro
pean Center for Evangelism.
3) The cost of our Printing Shop and
Distribution Center, the Recording
Studio, and the Volkswagen Campers
for visitation, will add an additional
$110,000 to the total.
SINCE THIS IS A THREE YEAR
PROGRAM, WHAT DO WE CONSIDER
OUR IMMEDIATE NEEDS?
(1) We must have $45,000 by April 1
to meet our purchase agreement. This
will cover the down payment and clos
ing costs.
(2) We must begin renovation as
soon as possible. In our conference

last week in Vienna, we recognized that
we could not go beyond our means, and
the conclusion we reached was that
"we will do nothing in renovation ex
cept that which absolutely has to be
done until funds are available."
But certainly plumbing has to be
done. Kitchens and bathrooms have to
be installed. Families will be living
there only a few weeks from now. Dan
Chambers will move in May. Georges
Carillet in June. Dewey Thackston and
his family are there now! We must begin
on the renovation at once!
Laundry facilities are an absolute
necessity, and some work must be done
in the Hospitality House kitchen in
anticipation for our summer program.
I would estimate a minimum cost of
S5,000 to do renovation work during the
months of May and June.
(3) The Printing Shop and Record
ing Studio will wait for at least another
year, but necessary vehicles for our
summer visitation are needed now.
We must also acquire equipment for
the Work Center such as typewriters,
desks and chairs, and filing cabinets.
A minimum of $10,000 is required for
this by June.
God's people are responding.
As of today, January 20, we have
received 812,487.29 in cash contribu
tions from Christians who are vitally
concerned about this work. We have also
received three-year monthly commit
ments amounting to $1,064.99. We thank
God for every person who has involved
himself in this MISSION TO RUSSIA.

ready sent your offering and commitment
will fill out the commitment blank on
page four and mail it to us with your
offering.
Plans made for Summer Program
In addition to conferences with the
Thackstons, we spent much time with
Don Poorman and his family and laid
extensive plans for the summer activi
ties out of the European Center for
Evangelism. Among other things, we
planned the program for the Summer In
terns, and also made plans for the 1972
WITNESSING TOUR that will be in
Vienna in June. During their time in
Vienna the dedication service for the
European Center for Evangelism will
be held.
Brief visit into Czeclioslovakia
I also made a weekend trip into
Czechoslovakia, where I preached in
Prague on the Lord's Day and had
lengthy conversations with Christian
workers there. We are always inspired
and challenged by the faith and con
secration of these Christians who live
for Christ in the midst of atheistic
communism.
An extra blessing of the week was
meeting Richard Deighton.who is work
ing in the Black Forest area in Germany
as a missionary. He came to the Hos
pitality House to visit with me and
brought his family with him. We had long
conferences about the work of Christ in
Europe and how important it is to find
effective ways to work for Christ across
the whole continent.
This outstanding young man has a
real evangelistic zeal and is determined
to be used of the Lord. He is devoted
to Christ and shows a real spirit of co
operation with other Christians. We an
ticipate many more such times with all
the missionaries of Europe as we have
time to meet with them and share our
faith and motivation.
John K. Huk in Austria and Poland
Plans had already been made for
John K. Huk to spend some time in
Europe on a missionary tour. He was in
Vienna at the same time I was. We were
able to spend several hours conferring
with a Christian brother from one of the
Eastern European countries regarding
the work of Christ in his country and
how we could assist those laboring
there for the cause of Christ.
And before I hardly knew it, the
plane was on the way back to Toronto.
I had been gone from Tuesday through
Tuesday and had spent 131 hours at
mission work during the eight days.
But God gave the guidance and strength
and by His grace we were able to ac
complish every single thing we had in
mind while we were gone. And, we had
the added blessing of meeting Bro.
Deighton.
Indeed a long chain of events did
start when our travel agent called. God
knew I needed to be in Vienna, and He
knew what could be done in the short
time available and HE MADE IT ALL
POSSIBLE. God is still opening doors!
TCM Missionaries Participate in Mid-winter Retreat
with Other European Workers

Frankfurt. Germany. This program is
directed by Guy Mayfield, veteran
European missionary.
Missionaries from Germany. Switzr
erland, Holland and Austria shared on
the program and in discussions relating
to the work of Christ in Europe.
Though often overlooked. Europe is
one of the most needy mission fields in
the world today.
The main theme running through the
Mid-Winter Retreat was this: Hou- can

for Christ? The Mid-Winter Retreat is
held annually for missionaries. Ameri
cans working in Europe, service per
sonnel and others speaking English
who wish to attend.

Radio Reaches Russia!
The Iron Curtain is not soundproof!
Toronto Christian Mission's broadcasts
are heard daily across the Soviet Union.
Our sources tell us these programs
are having great effect. When Gene Dulin
traveled in Siberia last summer, he
talked with Christian leaders who spoke
of Bro. Huk and the radio ministry.
"B/'O. Huk is our minister." they
said. Brethren told how they gather a-
round the radio to listen and have their
own worship service. In some isolated
villages John K. Huk is the ONLY
CHRISTIAN MINISTER THEY HAVE.
They can hear the Gospel only be
cause of short-wave radio, and only be
cause of concerned Christians in Cana
da and the United States who provide
the needed financial and prayer support.
Letters come telling us how much
the programs are appreciated. This let
ter was mailed from Poland.

Unto you! I thank you very much for
your program, "Everlasting Gospel."
May the Lord bless your service in
1972. Maymany find way to life eternal.
If you can, send me some Christian
literature, for which I will be thankful

Not all letters are from believers.
Replies such as this letter from the
Soviet Union tell us that a wide spec
trum of listeners hears every broadcast.
I listened to your program and am
very much puzzled. Whoever asked you
to "grind" such rubbish to us? Here in
our country, children from the age of
three already know there is no god. I
ask you not to forget the fact that we
have a socialistic government. We are
Pioneers (a communist youth organiza
tion). In place of crosses, we wear red
neckerchieves. The people, the party
and communism is our god. Therefore,
look for fools in other countries who
would listen to you and don't stir up
trouble in the waters of our knowledge.

That last sentence underscores the
great need for the ministry of Toronto
Christian Mission! This brother repre
sents the thousands of fellow Christians
in the Soviet Union who try to serve
God in an environment which endeavors
to destroy their faith.
Our programs are prepared with
utmost care. Some Christian songs,
recorded behind the iron curtain for this
specific purpose are brought out and
used. We have just completed a series
on Christian Evidences, with programs
entitled, "Is Jesus Christ A Myth?,"
"Is the Resurrection of Christ A Fact?,"
"Can I Know Whether There is A God?,"
and others.
God has promised, "My Word shall
not return unto Me void." Will you send

A Letter from Gene Dulin
March 1, 1972
Dear Christian Friend:
All systems are "Go" in Vienna at our European Center for Evangelism!
The Thackstons are living at the Hospitality House and have been caring for visitors
from communist-dominated countries as well as some from free countrieslike John Huk
and me when we were there a few weeks ago.
Poormans and Thackstons have made recent missionary tours from Vienna into various
iron curtain countries and have preached and taught and delivered Bibles and hymnbooks
and other vital tools for evangelism.
In the short time we have been using these facilities for the European Center for
Evangelism we have caught a glimpse of how valuable they really are, and have seen
their potential. How much can be done from this spot for the glory of Christ!
All of the Austrian government "red tape" pertaining to our purchasing this property
has now been handled, and bank and mortgage arrangements have been completed. Even
though we have occupied and used these facilities since October, we are just now able
to sign the final papers and take legal possession_5if_-theproperty^
But we are faced with a critical FINANCIAL DEADLINE. On April 1 we must have $45,000
to complete the down payment and meet "closing costs" such as the Austrian Sales Tax,
various fees and other adjustments. If this amount is not available on time, we will,
lose the property! _
And how much of this $45,000 do we have on hand? Right now we have $17,000 in cash
that Christians across this great land have contributed toward the purchase of the
European Center for Evangelism. This means we have exactly one month to the DEADLINE
to raise $28,000.
And brother, we don't have any "rich angels" committed to step in at the last moment and
give us a check for $28,000! And we don't have any reserve funds to call on, either.
And I, having spent all my life in Christian work, have no accumulation of personal
funds. I have already sold my retirement insurance-program and put it all into this
European Center for Evangelism. As I x^ite this, I'm a month behind in salary, so

obviously I don't have the money myself. Maybe you can see, then, why I call April 1
a critical FINANCIAL DEADLINE.
"Where is the rest of this $45,000 coming from?" It must be given by Christians just
like you and me. This is our only source of income.
I believe Christians are vitally concerned about the souls of men living behind the
iron curtain. I believe the material we have sent to you in recent weeks has fully
explained the vital part this European Center for Evangelism plays in our total MISSION
TO RUSSIA. I believe you want to share in a very real way in this work.
Oh, I know there are lots of appeals for help from many very worthwhile projects from
all around the world. But I also know THERE ARE NO SUCH APPEALS IN RUSSIA! And friend,
if we don't use our freedom here NOW to strike at the very heart of atheistic communism,
then there just may not be any opportunity in the future for such appeals HERE!!! We
must work NOWTODAYto take the gospel to Russia while there is yet time for "the
night Cometh when no man can work!"
Our MISSION TO RUSSIA is dedicated to taking the gospel to every man and woman and
child living behind the iron curtain. God has put a crack in that old curtain, and our
missionaries are working day and night, at considerable sacrifice and sometimes with
personal danger, to "do the work of an evangelist."
Could you, for the sake of Christ, give $1,000 or $500 at this time to share in
establishing this base of operation right on the doorstep of the communist world?
Could you give $250? Or $100? Or perhaps $50 or $25? Or maybe you could give only
$10 or less? But could you give something now?
We talk a lot about atheistic communism. We talk a lot against atheistic communism.
But brother, here is your opportunity to do somethingto strike at the very heart of
this anti-religious evil. The gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God that will
wipe this atheistic menace out of the heart of man.
And so the question is not only COULD you give, but is WILL YOU GIVE AN OFFERING TODAY
to this MISSION TO RUSSIA? Please, make it an offering of thanksgiving to God for the
blessings you enjoy in Christ as you live in a land where the gospel is preached freely,
and where men walk with the Lord openly.

A surprise visit from a refugee from
Eastern Europe! Conferences needed
regarding TCM's Summer Program be
hind the Iron Curtain! A preaching
mission in Poland! These events took
JohnK. Huk to Europe a few weeks ago.
A Christian brother who had spent
many years in prison fled from Eastern
Europe and was visiting the "Hospital
ity House" at TCM's European Center
for Evangelism. In long discussions with
him our missionaries explored ways to
spread the Gospel in his country.
From Vienna Bro. Huk traveled to
Poland, where he preached six times
in four churches. He visited with his
daughter, Vera, and Bon-in-law George
John K. Huk and Christian brother in
Warsaw, Poland, listening to T.C.M.'s
broadcast "The Everlasting Gospel."
Bajenski, a minister of the Gospel in
Warsaw. They laid plans for the coming
of the WITNESSING TOUR in June.
While staying with Vera and George,
Bro. Huk heard himself preach over
Radio Monte Carlo. Our program, "The
Everlasting Gospel" is heard clearly in
Warsaw - - firsthand proof that it pene
trates Russia as well!
On his way to a Saturday night
church meeting, Bro. Huk asked his
taxi driver if he would like to attend
the service. "He accepted willingly,"
Bro. Huk relates, "and he stayed for
the very first time in his life in a Gos
pel Service. He enjoyed it very much."
While in Poland Bro. Huk spent
John K. Huk discusses Russian month
ly. The Christian, with preacher from

several days with two preachers from
the U.S.S.R. He talked with them at
length, and gave them copies of our
Russian monthly. The Christian.
This Missionary Tour shows the
effectiveness of the work of TCM. Con
tacts for Christ were made in four coun
tries! Many pieces of Christian litera
ture were distributed! Sermons were
preached in four churches! Conferences
were held with Christian leaders!
And - - Bro. Huk had the enjoyment
of hearing himself preach the Gospel
over short wave radio behind the Iron
Curtain!
God continues to open doors for
His workers!
GOD HAD HIS EYES ON EUROPE"
"God had His eyes on Europe before
ever man thought of this strategic con
tinent," says Stuart Harris, in his book.
Eyes on Europe. Mr. Harris refers to
Jesus' command in Acts 1:8 to evan
gelize "in Jerusalem, and in all Judea,
and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost
part of the earth."
The "uttermost part" certainly in
cluded Europe! It was to Europe the
Holy Spirit led Paul, rather than to Asia
and Bithynia as he had planned. It was
in Europe that Paul preached, first in
the Balkans, then Italy, and to Spain if
he was able to carry out his plans.
It was from Europe that Paul wrote
nearly every letter of his in the New
Testament, and it was in Europe that
Paul died!
Harris goes on to say, "To reach
the world Europe must first be evangel
ized. .. .This centre of civilization has
not lost its strategic importance in re
lation to the world,"
There are
146 million souls in the European
part of the Soviet Union,
14 million souls in Czechoslovakia,
17 million souls in East Germany,
32 million souls in Poland,
8 million souls in Bulgaria,
19 million souls in Yugoslavia,
10 millicn souls in Hungary, and
19 million souls in Romania.
These millions constitute a vast
mission field for the Gospel of Christ!
Young people, old people, men,
women, boys and girls are searching for
the meaning of life, are looking for a
word of hope or joy in a world of dark
ness. In the words of Jeremiah of old,
"Is it nothing to you. all ye that pass
by?"
The Christians who are there are
subject to pressures that make it diffi
cult for them. Most of them do not have
even a few pages of the Bible, not even
one piece of Christian writing. They are
made to feel very much alone as they
stand for Christ.
Through radio, through our printing
ministry and through personal visita
tion, we are there with the Gospel! And,
while we work to spread the message
of Christ amidst atheism, we are co
operating with workers in Western
Europe, too. T.C.M.'s European center
for Evangelism is our base of opera
tions behind the Iron Curtain. At the
same time, these facilities are being
used for a cooperative witness with
other Christians in Western Europe.
God has His eyes on Europe. This
continent needs Christ! We are there
now with the Gospel. Only as you, too,
have your eyes upon this needy mission
field, and as you share with us in this
urgent task, can we do what must be
done to win Europe for Christ.

$45,000 in Vienna on Time, Praise the Lord!
On March 30 Don Poorman, TCM's
representative in Vienna, deposited a
check for $10,000 making a total of
S45,000 on deposit in our account in
Vienna, and a critical financial dead
line was met. Brother Poorman then
proceeded to finalize our contract and
to take legal possession of the European
Center for Evangelism.
When I wrote the front page letter
in last month's Report from Toronto -
Mission to Russia, we needed S28.000
more to meet the closing costs on April
first. And God. through His people -
through people like you - provided the
funds, and on time!
I wish you could read all of the
letters brethren have sent in these days.
A few are quoted on page 3. but only a
sampling. Young people wrote and sent
$2 or $5. Pensioners sent what they
could. People who had never sent an
offering before sent generous offerings.
A lady sent $1,050, a part of an insur
ance settlement. A preacher sent Si,000.
A retired teacher, 3900. A S2,000 con
tribution from an estate came at this
time. These are the largest contribu
tions we have ever received. God's
people, working together and sharing
as they could, have established a gos
pel beachhead right in the heart of
Europe and on the threshold of the
Iron Curtain.
Missionaries at TOM have been
greatly encouraged, too. by financial
contributions from fellow missionaries
laboring in various parts of the world.
Missionaries in Mexico. Germany,
Japan. Canada, Rhodesia. Alaska.
Hawaii, and several other mission fields
of the U.S. and professors in several
Bible colleges are sharing in the
MISSION TO RUSSIA, and the estab
lishment of the European Center for
Evangelism. How we thank God for the
work they are doing and for their Chris
tian spirit that led them to active in
volvement in this ministry.
For all of you, our Christian friends
around the world, and for your prayers
and financial support, we thank God
and take courage.
And we thank you for caring about
those precious souls who live in
countries dominated by atheistic com
munism - for caring enough to give that

but the beginning has been made. Regu

continuation of this vital program of
taking the Gospel of Christ behind the

People to Christ
in Russia!
A recent statement by certain
Christian leaders in Russia, mentions
"upwards of a million people in the
U.S.S.R. have come to a saving know
ledge of Christ" through radio broad
casts from such powerful short-wave
stations as Radio Monte Carlo, and Far
East Broadcasting Company, Manila,
P.I. (see March, 1972 Newsletter,
Eastern European Mission).
What an incentive this provides us
to continue and even to expand Toronto
Christian Mission's Iron Curtain Radio
Ministry of beaming Gospel and Scrip
ture Reading programs daily into Russia
and other communist-dominated lands.
As the Gospel is proclaimed, men and
women are challenged by the gospel of
Jesus Christ and are turning to Him!
Even Jews in Russia have been won
to Christ because of radio broadcasts!

Missionary Conference was held March
26-31 at Toronto Christian Mission's
LAKESHORE CHRISTIAN CENTER.
Missionaries speaking at the con

Fishback, and Gene Dulin. Other TCM
missionaries who participated in various
ways included Rod and Autumn Huron,
Charles and Maxine Branum, Charles
and Margaret Sprenger, George and
Lucille Repetski, Freida Rossol, Mary
Lou Bickerstaff, Vanita Dulin, and
Linda Albis. Alberta Bible College was
also represented.

was Conference chairman; and Charles

Thackston Family
in Budapest
A few Sundays ago the Dewey
Thackston family attended services in
Budapest, Hungary. As they arrived at
the meeting house, they saw a Chris
tian brother approaching. When he re
cognized the Thackstons he exclaimed,
"Oh, I was just saying to my brethren
that I hoped the Lord would send us
someone in whom we could have de
light on this dreary day and here you
are. Praise the Lord!"
Dewey preached at the service, and
Mike and Jeff spoke and sang at the
Sunday School. The boys' were thrilled
at having a part, and of course dad and
mother were happy, too.
Other opportunities for service and
discussions made the trip most bene
ficial for the church of our Lord.
Yes, great things are happening
for Christ from the European Center for
Evangelism. Every person in T.C.M. is
thankful to be a part of the work, and
every person who shares financially in
the MISSION TO RUSSIA has cause for
rejoicing as God blesses and guides.

Time magazine recently reported a
mail car had been shuttled onto a sid
ing and left set for months. . .loaded

We intend to answer all mail
promptly - - the day it is received if at
all possible. If you ever fail to get an

reasonable time, let us know. We'll
start hunting for another side-tracked
mail car!

articles from T.C.M. that much faith
and trust in God is in this work. May

THEIR WITNESS LIVES ON
C. V, Dunn and his wife ministered
for the Lord many years, and used their
lives for His glory. As they became
older they arranged for several mission
ary efforts to receive funds remaining
after they had gone to be with the Lord.
They wanted their witness to continue
even after death.
Just at the time Toronto Christian
Mission was approaching the critical
financial deadline of April 1, a check
was received from the estate of the
Dunns for $2,000. This substantial
gift, the largest single gift ever re
ceived by TCM, came at the right time
to help in a difficult period of our pro
gress for Christ. As these funds were
applied to the European Center for
Evangelism, the Dunns' witness con
tinues, not only today, but for many
years to come as the light of Christ
shines across the whole continent of
Europe from this Christian Center.
A will is simple to prepare for most
people. Very likely your attorney and
you could prepare a will in less than an
hour. You could determine while you
live to allow your witness for Christ to
continue on into the future through the
missionary work of Toronto Christian

A Letter For You
Dear Christian Friend:
MAY, 1972

May 15, 1972
Today I arrived in Vienna to share in the most exciting summer in my life and the
life of Toronto Christian Mission.
Everyone here is moving at full speed in the work. Thackstons and Poormans have
already made trips this month to strategic spots preparing for an effective summer
for our college youth ^o are arriving in a few days. I talked with an Hungarian
who said, "Oh, such a wonderful help for our young peoplel" when I told him about
American Christian young people going to visit his country.
Yes, things are moving over here! GOD CONTINUES TO OPEN DOORS! Never have I seen
the hand of God operating more clearly than through this entire MISSION TO RUSSIA
program. I'm convinced He wants us over here, and He has led His people to provide
the means to meet the initial payment on time and to get this program underway.
I want to share with you the details of our contract to purchase the European Center
for Evangelism. The total purchase price, including sales taxes, fees, and other
such charges, was $110,000. We paid the first $45,000 April 1. Because Toronto
Christian Mission is new in Austria, a long-term mortgage could not be obtained, as
was expected. Instead, we had to make a short-term contract that allows only 18
months to pay the other $65,000.
This means we have very high payments to make, but it will save thousands of dollars
of the Lord's money in interest. I'm always glad to save money, especially the
Lord's, even though it does require "wearing a tight belt" in some other areas for a
time. I feel sure you will agree.
Our first payment of $17,000 is due June 30, 1972. That is six and one-half weeks
46 daysfrom today. Yesterday, when I left Toronto, we had only a bit over $1,000
toward this $17,000. As always, we are totally dependent on God and His people for
this money. I have confidence that God will lead Christians like you to share as
sacrificially as possible to help take the Gospel behind the iron curtain.
If you could see the face of that young boy deep in the heart of Russia, as we give
him a New Testament in response to his plea, "Give me a Biblel" you'd have a better
understanding of why we are in this work, and why we want you to be involved. What
a blessing to know you are doing something for these people living with a Bible and
in the midst of atheistic communism!
Please, will you help in this vital ministry as we carry out the Great Commission to
preach Christ to the millions living in darkness?
I*m asking you to join with others who are praying and giving sacrificially to see
Russia opened to Christ in our time.
What will you give to help? We ask only that you be responsive to the burden Christ
puts on your heart now as you pause to pray and meditate on your blessings, and re
sponsibilities to Christ and His Mission to Russia.
Please prepare your offering and forward it to us today so we will have the money in
time to get it on to Vienna by June 30 to meet this first payment on the contract.

Promise rally conducted by Gene Dulin. . .Mrs.
Gene McElroy (aunt of Barb Thackston) spent the
month of April in Vienna helping in the cleanup
of the European Center. Her son. Mike, is spend
ing several weeks touring in Europe and has also
worked at the Center. . .Gene DuUn and David
Pace (the Dulins' son-in-law) departed for Vienna
May 14. David will be working at the Center until
after dedication services. . .Helpers from the
Toronto area churches have given many days of
work in preparing recent mailings from the To
ronto Work Center. Visitors from America have
also been "put-to-work" when they have time. . .

RUSSIA: Many people in our area are hearing
your broadcasts and praising it! I hear people in
the market place, at the collective farm offices,
and at church talking about THE EVERLASTING
GOSPEL they hear you preach by radio.
FLORIDA- Last month I began giving S25 more
per month as you perhaps noted. I want to tell
you that the Lord returned that $25 to me unex
pectedly within a week! Isn't He wonderful?
OREGON: I am praying for the Christians behind
the Iron Curtain. I pray that each of them will
have access to the Bible before the end of the
year. I feel this is urgeni. I think this is the
greatest burden upon my heart. Sometimes when
I sit down to study I try to visualize what it
would be like not having a copy of God's Word.
It seems I couldn't survive without this FOOD --
this GUIDANCE -- this POWER.
OHIO: It is indeed a pleasure to serve the Lord
with men and women who are as committed as
those I have met on the TCM staff. I pray that
the Lord will continue to bless your efforts. I
feel that the European Center for Evangelism is
a great step forward. May many souls be won and
strengthened through its use. Enclosed is a check

O/VTAR/O: We were so thrilled when receiving
your REPORT today to know you had been able
to reach your goal of S45,000 towards getting
established in the Russian mission work (Euro
pean Center for Evangelism). Again this proves
GOD truly answers prayer.
INDIANA: When you sent your letter and thanked
me for my little donation there was also on the
page a little note from someone that said they
had received an unexpected check after their do
nation. Well, I also received an unexpected check
just about three days after I sent my donation.
My niece visited me from Illinois and she said
they also received an unexpected check after
their donation -- so we both laughed and cried
together.
IOWA: Received your Report from Toronto this
morning - il just made my day! Had to write and
tell you so-It proves 'nothing is impossible with
God,' doesn't it? Surely wish I was physically
and financially able to help more but I can pray
and that helps lots!!!
THOSE V.B.S. STORIES
I just finished reading the VBS stories and
looking at the total VBS packet of pictures and
materials. Rod Huron has done a really great job
on these. And Autumn Huron has prepared a card
board model of the Hospitality House that is
superb.
Your VBS will be missing something if you
don't use these stories. It's late, I know, but a
phone call to us (416-278-6381) will have a set
in the mail the same day. If your school is later
in the summer, write for these lessons.

There's a Place for Every Worker . by Gene Dulin
"There's a place for every worker
in the vineyard of the Lord" was a
favorite song in the church in Helton-
ville, Indiana, when I became a Chris
tian. Seldom do I hear the old song
anymore, but I have never forgotten the
words -- or the message: God can use
every man's talent.
In recent days we have sent forth
from our Toronto Work Center several
workers. Their varied skills confirm
the old message that God will use all
men who willingly submit themselves
to Him.
THE DAN CHAMBERS FAMILY
Dan and Cecile Chambers owned a
farm home which they had completely
renovated. They are members of the
Neapolis, Ohio, church. Dan is a plumb
er by trade and worked in the Toledo
area. Cecile has been too busy caring
for their four children to continue her
teaching profession.
Over two years ago when we began
laying plans for the European Center for
Evangelism and the Hospitality House,
Dan and Cecile volunteered to leave
their home and move to Vienna to serve
as host and hostess of the Hospitality
House and to give oversight to the
physical work involved in keeping the
Center functioning. Why would two
people with a lovely home and a good
income pack up and leave it all to go
with their four little children to the
other side of the world at half the in
come and twice the work? Because they
love Christ, and want to do His bidding!
So on April 28 the T.C.M. family in
Toronto had a special prayer service,
and sent off this Christian family to
serve "in the vineyard of the Lord."
MRS. RUBY STEWART
Mrs. Ruby Stewart is a member of
the church in Delta. Ohio, and a long
time acquaintance of Don Poorman, one
of our missionaries in Vienna, who also
comes from Delta.
Mrs. Stewart was widowed last year.
She is healthy and wants to use her life
for the Lord by helping at our European
Center for Evangelism. She receives
social security and wants no salary
from Toronto Christian Mission.
She corresponded with Brother
Poorman, and before long I arranged to
meet Mrs. Stewart and talk with her.
She was willing to give up her mobile
home in Delta and move to Vienna for
an indefinite time to be determined by
her health and our needs. She would
even pay her own travel expenses and
share in housing costs! She feels the
Lord has seen fit to provide her a liv
ing from social security and she wants
to use her life for Him.
On April 28 Mrs. Stewart, a widow,
departed for Vienna from our prayer ser
vice in Toronto to travel on the same
plane with the Chambers family. She'll
cook and clean and help wherever she's

needed. Yes, "there's a place for every
worker"!
GEORGES CARILLET
Georges andLaVerneCarillet "gave
themselves a trip to Europe" last sum
mer as a graduation gift. Georges grad
uated from Emmanuel School of Reli
gion, and LaVerne graduated from Milli-
gan College. Three weeks of their time
in Europe was spent with Gene and
Lenora Dulin in Poland, Czechoslo
vakia, and Austria.
After seeing
Georges Carillet
firsthand the work
of T.C.M.. Georges
and LaVerne just
had to get on the
T.C.M. team. While
ministering to the
congregation at
Shouns, Tenn.,
Georges raised his
livinglink and ser
vice link funds in
record time. He
closed his ministry at Shouns April 30.
On May 4. again our Toronto mission
family gathered in a prayer service, this
time to send Georges off to Vienna to
begin his service for Christ as he
shares in the challenging opportunities
of taking Christ behind the iron curtain.
Georges' Master of Divinity degree from
Emmanuel especially qualifies him to
give careful instruction in our Intensi
fied Bible Training program for Chris
tian leaders in various communist-
dominated countries. Through this train
ing program the churches will be
strengthened and yet will carry on their
own edification and evangelistic efforts
without our "outside" interference or
control.
LaVerne will follow Georges to
Vienna in a short time when she has
fulfilled her teaching contract in
Tennessee.
And so again, through the guidance
of the Lord, another worker finds his
place "in the vineyard of the Lord."
WHAT ABOUT YOU?
What about you? Pause to ask your
self the question, "Am I really using my
talent to the fullest for Christ? Does
He want me in Vienna, or Toronto, or
some other mission field in the world?"
There is a place for every worker.
Please, for your sake and the sake of
Christ, heed the call as God opens the
door!

Godcontinues to challenge workers
to enter the harvest fields! Forty-four
Christians will be working this summer
out of T.C.M.'s European Center for
Evangelism in Vienna, Austria, taking
the Gospel of Jesus Christ behind the
Iron Curtain!
God Provides Workers
Sixteen members of the WITNESS
ING TOUR will stop at the Center on
their way into Russia and share in the
Dedication Service for the European
Center for Evangelism June 11. From
here the WITNESSING TOUR goes to
the Soviet Union where they will meet
Christians in Moscow and Leningrad.
Then, on to Poland for a week of preach
ing that will cover churches in Warsaw
and other cities and villages.
College-age Missionary Interns
will make these facilities their head
quarters as they come and go across
the borders and into Eastern Europe,
where they will work in Christian Youth
Camps, share in Bible Schools and
Youth Meetings with churches and meet
Christians in their homes.
Other workers are now in Vienna
or will soon arrive there to share in the
work of taking the Gospel of Christ to
those living in the midst of atheistic
communism. These include a school
teacher, two retired ladies, a young
minister, a businessman coining on his
vacation and a plumber and his wife,
as examples. These workers, teachers,
elders and leaders in the churches back
home, are making numerous sacrifices in
order to help with MISSION TO RUSSIA.
Gene Dulin, Director of T.C.M., and
missionaries Don Poorman, Dewey
Thackston, Georges Carillet and Dan
Chambers will provide leadership for
this aggressive summer of Christian
work behind the Iron Curtain.
Yes. God has provided the workers.
Each one could tell his personal story
of how he or she became involved in
T.C.M.'s MISSION TO RUSSIA, and
each account would reveal the hand
of God.
God Provides Facilities
God has also provided the facilities
in the European Center for Evangelism!
This outpost within the very shadow of
Interns - Europe-bound
the Iron Curtain enables us to multiply
our work in taking the message of Christ
to Russia and her satellites.
The latest shipment of Bibles,
Testaments, tracts and other Christian
literature arrived in Vienna the first
week in June. These materials are now
ready for delivery. The European Center
for Evangelism makes it possible to
distribute many times the number of
Bibles and other helps than could have
been done previously.
There are minor problems, of course,
such as the lack of hot water, the wood-
burning stove in the kitchen and the
lack of adequate plumbing, but these

problems do not keep the work from
moving forward. In spite of the crucial
need for renovation, the Thackston,
Carillet and Chambers families are liv
ing here, and "making do" until funds
come in to enable them to get their
apartments ready.
Without the Vienna property, this
summer's work would be impossible!
In the short time these facilities have
been used for our MISSION TO RUSSIA,
they have proved invaluable!
God Provides Opportunities
The workers are on the field! The
facilities are in use! And the oppor
tunities beckon!
Letters such as these indicate the
need:
HUNGARY: I have received your letter
of 14th April and I am glad to read you
are all right and do your service truly
where God's Spirit leads you. So far I
haven't received the booklet. . . .There
would be a lot more to write about but
if God permits, I shall tell you person
ally about everything. I send you my
best wishes in the name of the Lord
Jesus Christ.
USSR: / thank you very much for the
book which came. are well in my
family both spiritually and otherwise.
Our situation is about the same as in
the last year. We should pray more than
we do that the Lord send out workers
into His harvest. Please pray for us as
we will do for you. Give my greetings
to your wife and come to visit us. Rich
blessings from our Saviour. Till we
meet again.
Since 1961, when Gene Dulin and
John K. Huk made their first Mission
ary Tour to the Soviet Union, God has
opened many doors of opportunity.
Bibles have been placed in the hands
of believers in the USSR and every
satellite country!
God has blessed this work until now
we are broadcasting the Gospel by
short-wave radio; printing and distrib
uting New Testaments and other Chris
tian literature all across Russia and
the satellites; and meeting and working
with Christians in Russia and every
country of Eastern Europe.

DEDICATION SERVICE
Dedication services for the Euro
pean Center for Evangelism in Vienna,
Austria were held Sunday, June 11. In
addition to the staff workers at the
Center, members of the 1972 WITNES
SING TOUR group, the summer Interns,
and guests from the city of Vienna were
in attendance. Details of this signifi
cant occasion will be carried in next
month's Report.

Contributor's Letter Summarizes Work
I am unable to attend church, so
rely on the radio for sermons & the
cassette tape of the Sun. A. M. Service
when they bring It. The Lookout and
Standard are also sent which we enjoy
reading.
Sitting in her home an aged mother
hears the gospel preached over the
radio and through the means of cassette
tapes. Her daughter, also there in the
home to care for the mother, listens.
This is their only contact with the
message of Christ! The recorded mes
sage, the radio sermon, the Christian
literature brought by friends from the
church, and the visits of these friends,
these are her link with other Christians.
These encourage mother and daughter
to continue faithfully serving Christ.
Millions "ShuHn" Behind Iron Curtain
Atheists have erected walls to keep
their citizens in and build jamming sta
tions to keep the Gospel message out.
For the millions living in countries
dominated by atheistic communism con
tact with other Christians is limited.
Opportunities for fellowship and Chris
tian work are few.
Believers crowd into inadequate
buildings, because many churches have
been closed. In Brest, USSR, for ex
ample, the church building was appro
priated by the authorities and bulldoz
ers leveled the building and cleared the
site. The reason given was that the
land was needed for city development.
Yet today, according to recent infor
mation, no building has been erected,
nor has construction begun.
What happened to the church? It
meets on the outskirts, sharing a build
ing already crowded with other believ
ers whose buildings have been taken
away.
Manyother examples of such tactics
could be given, such as forcing congre
gations to move to areas which have no
bus service, or to old buildings in poor
repair and actually unfit for occupancy.
In spite of these conditions, and
many other restrictions, the church is
there! Faithful Christians meet for wor
ship. The Gospel is proclaimed and
souls are brought to Jesus Christ!
TCM's MISSION TO RUSSIA brings the
Gospel to these millions
The mother and daughter who sent
us the letter and their contribution rec
ognize the importance of our ministry,
for they receive the Gospel in the same
way as millions do in the Soviet Union:

As they hear the broadcasts, or
listen to the tapes of the worship serv
ice, this mother and daughter receive
encouragement to continue faithful to
the Lord. As they read the Lookout or
the Christian Standard they learn of
other Christians who are working and
serving the Saviour, and they read and
study Bible School Lessons and Chris
tian essays. And, as Christian friends
come from the church, this personal
visit gives them a lift and means so
much.
Broadcasting Every Day to USSR
May 1, 1969, Toronto Christian
Mission began broadcasting "The Ever
lasting Gospel" program into the Soviet
Union. This Russian language program
has continued since that time.
Our radio ministry has expanded
until today we are broadcasting the
Gospel of Christ nearly every day from
powerful stations in Manila and Monte
Carlo, and are heard a total of two hours
and fifteen minutes each week!
These messages are heard. Letters
such as this one tell us over and over
how much they are appreciated.
Tonight I listen to the broadcasts.
I heard the voice of Bro. Huk. The sub'
ject of your message was "Cleansing
Power of the Blood of Chiist." Since
my receiver is small I could not get
everything in the message. It was 9:15
Moscow time. I am very happy about it.
Your offerings make it possible to
reach these millions for Christ!
Printing Ministry Provides Bibles
Bibles, testaments and other
Christian materials are constantly be
ing shipped to T.C.M.'s European Cen
ter for Evangelism in Vienna. From
here they are placed into the hands of
those who can only have them if we
bring it to them.
T.C.M.'s MISSION TO RUSSIA is
printing and distributing Christian ma
terials in the Russian, Czechoslova-
kian, Hungarian, Yugoslavian, Polish,
Romanian, Croatian, Ukrainian and
Bulgarian languages.
God has promised, that His word
shall not return unto Him void. It shall
accomplish His purpose. Only eternity
will reveal the impact of this ministry!
Personal Visitation So Very Important
All the radio programs, and all the
Christian materials, are incomplete
without the personal contact of another
believer in Christ. Think of the mother
and daughter in their home, alone. The
radio program will not fulfill their needs
in Christ, neither will copies of the
Lookout or Christian S^andartf received
through the mail.
But when Christians come to see
them, to talk with them, to encourage
them and have fellowship together, this
makes the added difference that may
mean joy instead of sadness; hope in
stead of despair.
So it is with believers behind the
Iron Curtain. Radio is not enough.
Printing is not enough. There must be
the personal touch!
For this reason Gene Dulin and
other T.C.M. workers travel thousands
of miles annually to meet and talk and
have fellowship with Christians from
Siberia to Moscow to Tashkent to Ka
zakhstan. Our missionaries have per
sonally visited Christians in the Soviet
Union and every satellite countryl And
not once, but many times!
The importance of these personal
visits cannot be overstated! Put your
self in the place of those living in
atheism, and think what it would mean
to you to have a Christian come from
the West to meet and encourage your
stand for Christ amidst atheistic
communism.

this Iron Curtain outreach might be effectively used of God

This One Thing I Do by GENE DULIN
Toronto Christian Mission's Euro
pean Center for Evangelism was dedi
cated to the service of Christ in special
services June 11, 1972. The spirit, the
inspiration, the joy, the challenge of
such services are often lost as facts
are reduced to writing. Still, we want to
share some details of this glorious day
with you.
The day dawned a beautiful sun
shiny day. The temperature was warm,
but not hot. Anything but an outside
afternoon dedication service would have
been a mistake. Chairs were moved to
the lawn and the piano to the porch. The
front steps made perfect risers for the
Missionary Intern Choir.
The Dedication Service began at
3:30 P.M. with Don Poorman in charge.
Dewey Thackston led the congregational
singing and directed the Intern Choir.
John K. Huk gave a brief testimony and
sang "Living for Jesus" in both English
and Russian.
Gene Dulin gave the dedicatory
message on the theme "This One Thing
I Do." Special emphasis was placed on
allowing nothing to detract us from our
goal. This requires 1) individual and
personal dedication; 2) congregational
dedication; and 3) dedication of every
person associated with Toronto Chris
tian Mission to the one goal of reaching
the world for Christ.
Dedicatory prayers were given by
seven people representative of those
vitally coijcerned with this ministry.
Those leading in prayer included;
Richard Hollis, minister from East
Point, Georgia; Oddynne Bender, church
woman from Canton, Ohio; Georges
Carillet, T.C.M. missionary with spec
ial concern for leadership training;
Robert Hill, member of T.C.M. Board of
Directors; Cheryl Parrish, Summer In
tern with T.C.M.; Dr. S. Scott Bartchy,
missionary working in Germany: and
Gene Dulin.
The closing prayer was sung by
Dewey Thackston, "Bless thisHouse."
The refreshment hour allowed time
for fellowshipand _yi^tation of the
Center.
And friends had come from many
corners of the world to be a part of this
historical day. The June WITNESSING
TOUR group with people from Ohio,
Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Colorado,
Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia, as
well as Canada, had arrived. Missionary
Interns from Colorado, Washington, Illi
nois, Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee,
Georgia, and Indiana, representing nine
colleges, were also present. Robert Hill,
a member of the Board of Directors of
T.C.M., had arrived from Cincinnati the
night before. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Marken
from near Atlanta, Georgia, also arrived
on Saturday. Mrs. Ruby Stewart (Ohio),
Mrs. Myrtle McDonald (Indiana), and Mr.
and Mrs. Warren Newton, of Ohio, are
all spending the summer working at the
Center.
The Philip Ho family from India,
the Scott Bartchy, Art Thomas, and
Warren Lewis families from Tubingen,
Germany, also attended. Numerous
English- and German-speaking friends
from the Vienna area were present also.
The number of T.C.M. missionaries
present, plus their family members,
totaled twenty-five!
The morning worship hour was in
charge ofGene Dulin, with John K. Huk,
Don Poorman and Dewey Thackston de
veloping the theme, "The Old Message
for the New Age." Dan Chambers and
Robert Hill presided at the Lord's Table.
Sunday and Monday nights our three
visiting missionary families were asked
to share some of the excitement of their
work with us. Philip Ho, Dr. Scott
Bartchy and Art Thomas each gave in
spiring and challenging reports of their
fields of service.
European Center for
Evangelism~^~T[>v&y~.Xhe "Good News
that Jesus Saves" will spread across
the continent and to the uttermosTlJaFt.,
of the world. From this single service,
one hundred people went their various
ways to the four corners of the world
to witness for Christ. May this be but
a foretaste of the future effectiveness
of this Center where Christ is exalted
and hospitality will be extended on His
behalf.

Report on the WITNESSING TOUR:
"You Must Come Back . . .

"Take our greetings to the Chris
tians in America and Canada. Tell them
we are praying for them and ask them
to pray for us."
This was the word we received as
we met with Christians in Russia and
Poland on our WITNESSING TOUR.
They want us to know they still believe
in God and are living for Christ, and
they want us to remember them in prayer.
We must never forget them!
Those who were a part of the WIT
NESSING TOUR will never forget! How
could we erase the picture of hundreds
of people crowded into the church build
ing in Leningrad for the Thursday night
prayer service, with many people stand
ing for the entire two and one-half
hours? The sincerity and devotion of
these believers was evident on every
face. One young man, for example, stood
in the aisle about halfway back at the
beginning of the service. Gradually he
moved forward through the crowd, as if
drawn toward the pulpit, until by the
end of the service he was standing at
the front by the communion table. What
a joy it was to meet this fine young
Christian after the service!
Even though we could not under
stand the language, we could not miss
the fervency of the messages. These
Russian preachers could preach, and
preach they did, with an urgency and
fervor that reached and moved the crowd.
GeneDulin preached, too, challeng
ing these brethren to faithfulness and
service to God. As Bro. Huk trans
lated, heads nodded in agreement and
murmurs of approval came from the
congregation. We could feel their re
sponse. They were saying, "We will
stand firm. We will be faithful. Yes, we
are determined to follow our Saviour."
We saw a similar situation in
Moscow, where on Sunday afternoon we
met with over two thousand believers
in the Evangelical Christian-Baptist
Church where Mr. Nixon visited. We
were surprised to see so many young
people present! Often we hear that the
church in Russia is composed only of
old people. This most certainly is not
true!
"Tftank you for your programs! Please, please continue the broadcasts!
We listen every time! Your messages help us so much!"
The sincerity of the prayers, the
singing of the choir, the preacher's
message on the text, "If any man will
come after me, let him deny himself,
take up his cross daily and follow me,"
are indelibly impressed upon our minds.
John K. Huk and Gene Dulin both
preached during this service, and after
the benediction hundreds of people
crowded forward to express appreciation
for these messages. Many, many people
whispered to Bro. Huk their gratitude
for the Radio Broadcast. "Thank you
for your programs." "Please, please
continue the broadcast." "We listen
every time." "Your messages help us
so much." And so on.
We saw many things during our stay
in Russia, many monuments and build
ings which portray the achievements of
their system. The most impressive thing
to us was the church, still there in the
midst of atheism, a testimony to the
truth of Jesus' words regarding His
church, "The gates of hell will not
prevail against it."
We visited Lenin's tomb, for ex
ample. Here we saw the enshrined dead
body of Lenin, honored by millions of
followers. One of our Tour Group, Mrs.
Margaret Faust, visited the Garden
Tomb in Jerusalem in 1971. There she
saw no body of Jesus, no armed guards
watched the visiting crowds to see that
no one defaced the form of Jesus, no
bright lights played upon His corpse.
What a contrast! The one leader is
dead; the other lives! How thrilled we
were to realize that there is no spot on
Earth where we can visit the body of
Jesus! He rose from the grave. We, too,
shall share His victory!
From the Soviet Union we flew to
Poland, where we divided into two
Evangelistic Teams for preaching and
singing in the churches. These were
hard days, busy days, days of driving,
singing, preaching, visiting, encourag
ing, witnessing.
"Your comingmeans so much to us! You must come back. Your fundamental
sermons are so helpful. You must come back!"
Paul Bajko and Cloyd Christman
were in Poland at the same time we
were. Together we participated in a
preaching service and visited the camp
ground and an old people's home.
The strength of these Polish con
gregations, and the capability of their
leaders, speaks well for the future of
the church in Poland. In every service
we saw young people, heard them sing
often, met them and talked with them in
the churches and in their homes, and
saw their dedication to Jesus Christ.
Often we were asked about the young
people of America and Canada. "Are
there many hippies?" "What about the
Jesus Movement?" "Are many young
people on drugs?"
These young people in Poland want
to know whether our young people are
remaining faithful to Christ. They look
to us for encouragement and help as
they live the Christian life.
We saw so many signs of war and
destruction. Warsaw was devastated by
Hitler's bombers during the War. Lenin
grad was under seige for 900 days. We
visited a mass grave where 25,000 to
30,000 teachers and officials were
murdered just outside Warsaw, and saw
one of Hitler's concentration camps for
the extermination of millions of inno
cent victims. These tragic reminders,
the ever-present numbers of soldiers,
the barbed wire and mined "no-man's
land" of the Berlin Wall all made us
glad to be a part of the Kingdom of the
Prince of Peace. The systems of men
lead to death; the Kingdom of our Sav
iour leads to life!
We came back better Christians,
grateful for the privilege of living in a
land where we are free to serve God.
The day before we left we were
sitting at the breakfast table in the
hotel in Warsaw. A brother had come to
the hotel to deliver a message. He
sought out Gene Dulin. Speaking with
an urgency and intensity he said, over
and over, "Your coming means so much
to us. You must come back. Your funda
mental sermons are so helpful. You
must come back. We want you to come
back. Bring others with you. Come back
and visit us. You must come back."

What a Summer! by GENE DULIN
available because of money. How we
thank God for you, our supporters.
But the real test - the real bless
ings - comes when we look into the
faces of those people "over there."
They appeal for continued concern on
our part and yours. "Don't let anything
make you stop this ministry!" are the
words we hear, but the eyes speak even
louder. Then you talk to people who
have accepted Christ and have been
baptized just days before. Or you see
the baptismal service! You see an aged
preacher take a tract we have printed
and use it in a service. You see an
other man - this one a young man - take
a New Testament we have printed from
his pocket. You hear that powerful voice
of John K. Huk as he preaches the
"Everlasting Gospel" on the radio.
Then you say, "Oh thank God - thank
God! What a wonderful summer!"
Where do you start to describe such
a wonderful summer?!?! Statistics are
cold. Words seem inadequate. Our
emotions are beyond expression. But in
some way I must share the ble'ssings
with you.
Nineteen of your missionaries with
TCM have been laboring from the
European Center for Evangelism these
past months. The Lord's work has taken
these Christian workers into nineteen
countries - - eight communist-dominated
and eleven in western Europe.
Fifteen college young people from
nine different colleges in America
spent eight weeks working for Christ
under the guidance of our missionaries.
What a tremendous impact these "kids"
made for Christ as they met hundreds
and hundreds of people "over there."
"I'll never be the same again.
Every Christian should make this trip
with you," is the comment of one of
the June Tour Group that made their
way to Moscow and Leningrad. Our
Christian travelers saw the attitude of
the atheistic-communists when they
confiscated a number of New Testa
ments and Bibles at the border saying,
"They are not allowed!" And yet they
declared they have freedom of religion
and freedom of worship. But still God
rules and Bro. Huk and I preached full-
length sermons in Moscow!
Short-term missionaries, paying
their own expenses, came to Vienna to
twrk and work they did. Two retired
ladies (Mrs. Ruby Stewart, Delta, Ohio,
and Mrs. Myrtle McDonald, Indianapolis,
Indiana) prepared 3,305 meals in eight
weeks! A teacher, who also serves on
TCM's Board of Directors (Robert Hill,
Cincinnati. Ohio), left for Vienna the
day school was out in June and re
turned home one week before school
started in September. His summer's
work focused on puttying and painting
windows, but he found time to spend
twenty-three days on missionary trips
into three communist countries. The
Newtons from Delta, Ohio, took seven
weeks and helped do plumbing and other
work. On and on the story goes.
And hundreds of you here in the
United States and Canada were actively
involved, too. Because of your faithful
stewardship and generous contributions,
we were able to make the July payment
of S12,000 and the September payment
of $5,000. And we had sufficient funds
to carry out the program over there. Not
one missionary visit has been delayed
because of money. Not one person has
been denied hospitality because of
money. Not one Bible has been un-

BEING A MISSIONARY INTERN IS
As we planned the 1972 Summer
Intern Program many people asked,
"What exactly will the Interns do?"
Realizing that we had to remain nex-
ible to the Lord's leading, we couldn't
answer in specifics. But today as we
look back on the complex eight weeks
of Internship, there is so much to tell
that we don't know where to begin. Let
us share with you some of the obser
vations and experiences of these 15
college Interns.
BEING A TCM INTERN IS. . .
. . .having your first plane ride,
. . .to be on a 747 crossing the
Atlantic Ocean.
. . .spreading gravel, pulling weeds,
washing windows, making beds (Euro
pean style with feather ticks), laying a
concrete floor in the new shower room,
doing anything to prepare the European
Center for Evangelism for the Dedica
tion Service.
. . .learning to sing "Sweet, Sweet
Spirit" in harmony in time for the Dedi
cation Service.
. . .becoming "lifetime" friends with
the other Interns, then being divided in
to three teams for traveling all summer.
(Schedules had teams crossing paths
in Vienna only once or twice during the
remaining seven weeks!)
. . .having a prayer circle before
leaving TCM's Hospitality House be
hind, as you leave on your first trip
behind the Iron Curtain.
. . .staying alive despite those
Yugoslavian drivers!
. . ."sleeping" in a pup tent as the
rain drips through and your "roommate"
loudly snores through it all.
. . .giving a lift to two British girls
and talking to them about Christ. One
girl wore a cross necklace. "My grand
mother gave it to me so I wear it, but I
have no use for the church."
. . .wearing an outfit on Tuesday,
sleeping in it Tuesday night and wear
ing it again Wednesday.
. . .teaching English choruses to
young people in four Iron Curtain
countries.
. . .learning choruses in four other
languages.
. . .eating open-face sandwiches
for breakfast and supper (one piece of
bread spread with either green onions,
cucumbers, salami or cheese).
. . .walking through the streets of a
small town, singing and leading the
people to church.
. . .not taking a shower for 8 days!
. . .the disappointment when a
Christian young person in a country
with tight restrictions didn't arrive for
the pre-arranged meeting. Several In
terns said, "I could/"ee/ the communism
in that town."
. , .the joy of delivering Bibles and
tracts in the language of the people.,
. . .the frustrations of no schedule.
The American mind slowly adjusted to
the fact that your European friends
would eventually let you know what you
were to do.
. . .having five minutes notice to
speak on a given topic through an in
terpreter.
. . .going in response to a last-
minute invitation to a camp high in the
mountains. The team only stayed four
hours but left in tears of friendship after
sharing in sports, singing and testimony
with many Christian young people.

.. .playing volleyball until you
could collapse. Young people, at first
cautious and reserved, soon relaxed
and accepted the Interns after a rousing
game of volleyball or soccer.
.. .being questioned about the mean
ing of the Lord's Supper in your life
before being allowed to participate in
a communion service.
.. .prayer before border crossings
and celebration singing afterwards.
.. .going without a Coke for over a
week.
.. .learning to love Poland. There
are so many opportunities there and the
people are so responsive.
.. .taking an hour to hug and kiss
new friends in a reluctant good-by be
hind the Iron Curtain.
.. .realizing how much Europe means
to you after eight short weeks of ex
posure to the ways of life and needs of
life of these wonderful people.
Yes, the 1978 Summer Intern Pro
gram officially ended August 5. But we
feel that the good accomplished by the
program will never come to an end.
Fifteen college students spread their
witness over twelve countries in two
months. Because of that, many young
people and adults were impressed, up
lifted and encouraged in their Chris
tian lives. Fifteen college students met
people living in different degrees of
wealth, happiness and religious free
dom, and because of that, they will
never be the same.
In future issues of the "Report" we
will be sharing articles by individual
Interns concerning their summer's
experiences.

From transmitter...
I Heard!
"This is Trans World Radio in
Monte Carlo."
Those words, although spoken in
Russian, were like "music to my ears."
On the short-wave receiver I had lo
cated the station that each Thursday
broadcasts "The Everlasting Gospel,"
our Russian language program, to wait
ing millions in the Soviet Union and
satellite nations.
I was seated in the kitchen of
TCM's European Center for Evangelism,
near Vienna, Austria, on July 27. A
few seconds later I was to hear for the
very first time--by means of a live
broadcast--one of the programs I had
been producing for three years!
Imagine my joy as I heard the music
and then the message by John K. Huk!
It all came through loud and clear from
beginning to end. In some respects this
was like Birthday, Christmas and
Thanksgiving all rolled into one!
(Later, when I had the privilege of
personally visiting the offices ofTrans
World Radio in Monte Carlo, I was told
that if the signal was received clearly
inVienna.it was being received clearly
in western Russia as well.)
As I sat there listening to the broad
cast, my thoughts carried me back to
September, 1969. Maxine and I had just
arrived in Canada to begin work with
Toronto Christian Mission. As Director
of Radio Operations, it was to be my
task to develop this vital phase of
mission activity and outreach. The be
ginning was small. A fifteen-minute
program--broadcast once a week--was
produced on older equipment. Sermons
Via antenna ..,
were recorded in rooms that were far
from being acoustically correct.
Today, through the generosity of
Christian friends, programs are being
made on excellent equipment in a spec
ially prepared missionary recording
studio. How 1 thank God for making it
all possible. From that single fifteen-
minute program in the beginning, the
Russian broadcasts have increased to
two-and-one-quarter hours every week.
And so, there at our European Center
for Evangelism, I heard one of the broad
casts! It touched me deeply, especially
as I realized millions of others were
hearing and hanging on to those words
. . .words telling that eternal life is
possible through Jesus Christ.
I returned to Toronto determined to
tell as many people as possible how

you and pray that He will give
you strength and good health to
serve Him. May God reward you
