Applications that are highly energy intensive need innovative heating solutions. Viability studies show that there is considerable potential for energy savings to be made in new installations and modernisation projects alike, in terms of heating energy and process heat potential which has hitherto been scarcely realised. Viessmann's highly efficient heating systems achieve even greater savings the higher the energy requirement, in other words, in commercial operations and industrial buildings, as well as in office blocks, hotels, clinics and schools. Even in the short term, the signicant efficiency differentials between the new system and its predecessor have resulted in remarkable savings in terms of energy consumption and costs. Payback periods are similarly short. Viessmann offers industry, commerce and local authorities perfectly matching system solutions. The focus here is on renewables that cover base load and which are combined with peak load boilers that operate with fossil fuels. So as to ensure everything works together perfectly to achieve maximum efficiency, all system components are assembled according to individual requirements.

Four double ame tube boilers for power, steam and hot water that supply an industrial estate
International energy concern, Sembcorp Utilities, provides a steam output of up to 60t/h for several chemical companies on an industrial/commercial estate. HKB, one of the Viessmann Group companies, was the general contractor responsible for the construction of the steam boiler plant in 2009 in the British town of Wilton. Due to industrial requirements, four Vitomax D HS double ame tube boilers were installed, each with a steam output of 30t/h. Two of these are kept for redundant backup. Subject to design, these boilers deliver saturated or hot steam at a rate of 12 to 58t/h as well as warm or hot water from 10 to 38MW. For even greater efficiency, an economiser can be installed downstream of the boiler, as an option. It utilises the waste heat to heat the feed or return water, thereby reducing energy bills.
Expansion of green energy Sembcorp customers are mainly to be found in the chemical and petro-chemical sectors; some are also active in the biofuel and recycling industries. Sembcorp takes account of this development and is continuously expanding its range of green energy generated from sustainable fuel. Plant overview Boiler type Fuel type Steam output Fresh steam temp. ArcelorMittal is one of the largest steel producers in the world. Every year at the Belgian site in Ghent, ve million tonnes of at steel proles for the automotive and domestic appliance industries are produced. With 5000 employees, ArcelorMittal is the largest employer in East Flanders. The gas that was
generated during steel manufacture used to be ared off as a by-product and completely wasted. Now, these hot gases are utilised by an economiser to provide saturated steam. For this purpose, HKB delivered a boiler with a steam output of up to 45t/h.
Shipping a double ame tube boiler for Iggesund Paperboard SA, Workington, Great Britain
Two of the world's largest double ame tube boilers are used in a paper mill in Great Britain. The Vitomax D HS boilers deliver up to 115tonnes saturated steam per hour. The burner output per ame tube is around 19MW. This results in a capacity of 76MW under full load conditions sufficient to produce 200,000 tonnes of chromo board per annum.

UPM is one of the leading forest product and paper groups in the world, its head office is in Helsinki. The company employs 23,000 in 15 countries and produces paper for magazines and newsprint, ne and special paper, nishing and wood products. In 2009,
this group accounted for sales of 7 .7 billion. For their operation in Plattling, HKB supplied a plant for saturated steam, incorporating a VitomaxDHS, designed for the production of 780,000 tonnes per annum. The steam output amounts to 3 x 53t/h.
Biomass plant
"Cradle to Cradle" is a process where the material used for production is recovered at the end of its useful life in order to produce new products of a higher quality. The Dutch manufacturer, AVR, has specialised in this process. In its plant at Duiven, paper sludge from the recycling process is combusted. The resulting ue gas, including ash, is channelled
through the boiler and subsequently ltered. The material derived from this process is nally used in road building. The HKB biomass plant has a height of 40metres and was installed inside a 60metre high building.

The Dutch manufacturer, Purac, is a producer of ingredients for the food processing industry with a worldwide reputation. At one of the ve production facilities in Rayong, Thailand, lactide is produced from lactic acid, for which it is heated to around 200C.
For this process, HKB builds tailor-made boiler systems. To expand production in Rayong, a further boiler with a steam output of 25 t/h was installed in 2011.
StoVerotec GmbH specialises in thermal insulation products. A new production line meant that a steam boiler system was required that offers sufficient reserve capacity to allow for future expansions in production. The Vitomax 200-HS high pressure steam boiler was selected, which features an output of 4t/h and a safety pressure of 16bar.

CHP units for power supply and air conditioning in office complexes
The energy centre at the Deutschen Gesetzlichen Unfallversicherung (DGUV) in St.Augustin near Bonn was hopelessly outdated: The six hot water boilers for generating heat dated back to the early 1980s. The refrigeration plants that provided air conditioning and cooling of the IT centre consumed way more energy than the current average. Combined heat and power pays for itself Following initial plans for a replacement of the energy equipment for the 160m2 large computer centre, it soon became apparent that the deployment of a CHP unit would, in may ways, pay for itself. Firstly, by combining heat and power generation (CHP) and secondly, because the CHP unit can cover the power supply, primarily that of the computer centre, in the case of a mains failure. From a small to a big solution These factors made a persuasive case for extending the original plans to the extent that cover was provided for the entire DGVU, which has a oor space of 80,000m2. The CHP unit is at its most economical and offers the most rapid amortisation rate because it is in use for more than 7000 hours annually; this brings benets in reduced fossil fuel and electricity costs.
The nal decision lead to the building of a new office and technology suite. The energy centre, including ve Vitobloc 200 CHP units, was accommodated in the basement. The generated power is used in the building itself. The mains substitution management system this requires is provided by the Viessmann multi module management system300. The heat generated from the CHP unit is mainly used for operating absorption refrigeration machines and heating the building. If required, the Vitoplex300 low temperature boiler supplies additional heat. Plant overview Combined heat and power station Low temperature boiler Fuel type
Positive result for the operators thanks to the combined heat and power installation
"Our viability study made the key difference for the clients to decide in favour of replacing the old heating centre with six boilers and a cooling centre with three refrigeration units with a new energy centre with trigeneration. Positive for the environment, as CO2 reductions of almost 5000 tonnes were achieved. The operator benets from a full maintenance contract and a rapid payback time of only ten years, since the power generated by the CHP units signicantly reduced operating costs, i.e. compared to conventional technology by more than 100,000 per annum."

"Wohnoase" residential complex in Regensburg, Germany Gas condensing boiler Vitocrossal 300
Architects applied the standard "Ecological building energy efficient house 60" of the KfW for this residential park in Regensburg. This allowed credits at favourable interest rates and public subsidies to be called upon. As part of an innovative energy supply system, two Vitobloc 200 combined heat and power units
were installed to generate both the heat and power required for the entire 30-apartment complex. In addition, the energy centre features a gas condensing boiler and a low temperature oil boiler for central heating and DHW heating.
Vitobloc 200 combined heat and power unit heating station Memmingen
The heating station in Memmingen ensures the heat provision for three companies in an industrial estate by means of a local heating network. The total of 8500kW are generated by a Pyroex wood combustion system with 3300kW and a Vitobloc 200 combined heat and power unit with 200kW. The power generated by the CHP unit amounts to 140kW. This is partially used to cover demand
on site in the heating station. Waste heat from the engine is fed into the local heating network. The use of an economiser (exhaust gas heat exchanger) with 260kW output helps to achieve a boiler efficiency in excess of 90percent. A local business supplies woodchips for the wood combustion system from the region. Over 80percent of the energy demand is covered by wood fuel.
12/13
The heat demand of 13,000MW is covered all year round by a Vitobloc200 combined heat and power unit and, during the colder seasons, by an additional Pyroex biomass boiler. At around 8000hours per annum, the CHP unit primarily generates power that is used in the leisure complex itself. The heat that is generated at the same time is used for central heating and DHW, which in summer covers 90percent of demand.

Installation of the ORC turbine in the district heating plant in Olang, South Tirol, Italy
Clean and largely maintenance-free technology was required for the construction of the district heating station in Olang, South Tirol. The overriding goal was a secure heat provision with minimum personnel costs. For this, Mawera supplied two woodchip boilers with a total of 8MW output. A third boiler also generates power by heating thermal oil in an ORC system (Organic Ranking Cycle). The
steam generated as part of this process drives a turbine that generates power. Waste heat is "recycled" via a heat exchanger with 3.9MW output, which is also delivered into the district heating network. By now, 620 consumers have been connected to the network including many households as well as a school, swimming pool, church and other public facilities.

Bio-Wrme Grfelng Multi mode heating centre for local heating supply
The heating centre at Bio-Wrme Grfelng GmbH meets all the demands for quality, efficiency and optimum interaction between all of the modules. A long service life and ease of maintenance were particular areas of consideration. Both of these factors make a signicant contribution to the continuous, yet economical, operation of the plant, which stands at more than 8000 hours per year. The Pyroex boiler used here is notable for the minimal demands it makes of its fuel Material with a water content of up to w60 can be combusted reliably and cleanly. The boiler's modulating operating mode matches the system output to the actual heat demand. If required, a Vitomax200 peak load boiler is started as well.
The aim is to generate energy exclusively with sustainable fuel. The business was founded in 2009 in order to build a combined heat and power station in Grfelng, Bavaria, red exclusively with woodchips. Partners in this venture are a local business and an energy supply utility. The total investment outlay to date is around 4million. With its capacity of just about 400m3, the woodchip store has been sized so that it needs to be topped up just once every week, under normal operating conditions. The push rod discharge pushes the fuel automatically via a conveyor into the Pyroex boiler, where the woodchips are burned at around 950C almost without leaving any residue. A large KWT heat pump with an output of 1560kW provides efficient and environmentally responsible ground heating inside the greenhouses and in the loading shed. For this, more than 80percent of the required energy is drawn free of charge from the groundwater. A Vitoplex low temperature gas boiler with 1950kW is available for space heating.
Low temperature oil boiler Vitoplex 300 Deutsche Brse, Eschborn, Germany
Two combined heat and power units on the roof of the 87m high building take care of the largest part of the required energy provision. These are operated with biogas, deliver an output of 1600kWel and cover around 60percent of the on-site power demand. The building's base heat load is some 1700kW th which represents approximately 90percent of the heat demand for central heating, the ventilation equipment and domestic hot water. Two additional gas condensing boilers with an output of 2100kW cover the peak load. A 90m2 solar thermal system with Vitosol 200-F at-plate collectors delivers around ten percent of the energy required for heating DHW. Waste heat from the combined heat and power units that cannot be used immediately heats the water in a heating water buffer cylinder, which is fed into the heating system, when required.

Lotte World Tower Seoul: Natural heat for modern architectural concepts
A skyscraper of truly superlative dimensions is currently under construction in the South Korean capital Seoul the 555 m high Lotte World Tower. On completion, this tower will accommodate various residential and commercial areas as well as a hotel with 123 oors above and six below ground. This structure is one of the most ambitious projects when it comes to the environmentally responsible generation of energy in high-rise buildings. Twelve large KWT heat pumps will provide the renewable part of the building's heating and air conditioning supply. Six brine/ water heat pumps, each with 1.7MW heating output and 1.9MW cooling capacity, will be supplied by 720geothermal probes sunk 200m into the ground. Ground probes have already been inserted as part of the ground works. River water for air conditioning In addition, six water/water heat pumps will be installed, each with 2MW heating output and 1.7MW cooling capacity. The latter will use water from the river Han that runs past the tower.
The river water is initially ltered and then channelled through a heat exchanger outside of and separate from the heat pumps. This transfers the heat to a brine mixture and transports it to the heat pump. This intermediate step ensures that only clean water ows through the evaporator, thereby ensuring the high operational reliability of the heat pumps. The total installed heating output amounts to 22.2MW and the cooling capacity to 20.4MW. The heating centre of this installation covers an area of around 8000square metres. Control centre All heat pumps will be operated in a cascade, which is controlled by a higher ranking control centre. Completion of the Lotte World Tower is scheduled for 2015. The step away from fossil fuels towards environmentally responsible heat pumps is in line with the Stecas claim as a "Service provider of products for an ecological future". As a result, the company invested in two Vitocal350-G Pro heat pumps. These supply the research and development department, laboratories, administration offices and production buildings in summer and winter with a pleasant temperature of 21C. The total heating output for this amounts to 484kW, the cooling capacity 384kW.
An adsorption refrigeration system that generates cooling from heat was installed at the Umweltbundesamt Dessau to condition the interior. High performance Vitosol 200 vacuum tube collectors deliver the heat required by this process, i.e. 115 collectors with a surface area of 3m2 each are mounted on the at roof. A special feature of this refrigeration machine operated with solar thermal energy is, that the collectors provide most heat in high summer, when lots of energy is required for cooling. The Fraunhofer Institute for solar energy systems discovered that the refrigeration machine can operate under full load on the 100 days each year that experience most insolation. Per year, the solar thermal system should deliver a heat yield of 400kW/m2. Excess heat during spring and autumn that is not required for cooling, can be fed into the heating system.

The building of the ZBW Berufskollegs Duisburg with a covered space of 230,000 cubic metres is heated and cooled exclusively with three large KWT heat pumps. Linked to these are 180 geothermal probes with an average depth of 135 metres that extract
the heat stored under ground. With a total depth of 24,300 drilled metres, it is the largest geothermal plant in Germany. As an ecologically sound and almost CO2-free energy system it is far more than just a showcase project.
Ice store
Compared to a conventional system, an ice store enables more than 50percent of energy costs to be saved. At the Ecolab in Monheim, the system with 1.6 million litres capacity is installed under the car park and, in conjunction with two brine/water heat pumps, provides the central heating and air conditioning of the building that accommodates 900 employees. Of its type, this is the largest plant in the world. This is how it works: Energy generated when water freezes is utilised for heating by means of a heat pump. In addition, the heat pump taps into further sources of renewable energy: Solar and air via rooftop collectors
and natural geothermal heat in the immediate vicinity of the ice store.
Bioenergy
A biogas plant of this type was installed at the Wettesingen bioenergy village.
24/25
Following successful preliminary feasibility and feasibility studies and an economic viability check, Viessmann has developed a bioenergy village for the community of Wettesingen in Breuna, near Kassel. In late 2012, construction of the local heating network began, which was to supply around 200households with heat from renewables. 100percent renewable As 100percent of its heat supply comes from renewables, Wettesingen is currently the only bioenergy village in Germany (as of March 2013). The local heating network pipeline is ten kilometres long in total. All the technology used comes from Viessmann's comprehensive product range. The existing biogas plant was extended to include a further CHP unit, three wood combustion systems and a biogas boiler. The overall thermal output is approximately 2600kW, while the electrical output is 900kW.
30percent lower heating costs The price for heating in the Wettesingen bioenergy village is based on all investment and running costs. Compared to the costs for individual heating systems that use fuel oil, the community's heat supply is now around 30percent cheaper. Since the prices of oil and gas can be expected to continue to rise, the price benet will become even greater in future. Project partner Viessmann Right from the start, Viessmann was part of the project team. The Viessmann team accompanied the village community as it took its rst steps towards becoming a bioenergy village. This includes studies that check, at various levels of detail, the feasibility of the concepts and their economic viability. In this area, Viessmann's project development department can provide valuable support. Moreover, local design engineers are drawn into the discussions too. As a professional partner, Viessmann has all the knowledge needed for project coordination, system technology and system construction.

For the biogas plant Fischbach Schmack Biogas GmbH installed their system COCCUS Farm 185. The following material is wet fermented: cattle slurry, grass silage, maize silage and solid pig manure. This agricultural plant has an electrical output of 185kW.
Biogas plant
The agricultural biogas plant in Pieve D'Olmi, Italy, has an electrical output of two times 972kW. Schmack, a member of the Viessmann Group, supplied the EUCO TITAN wet fermenter with a capacity of 1000m3. Maize and triticale silage, pig slurry, maize our and small amounts of biscuit and pasta waste from local production facilities are fermented in the digesters.
Afterwards, the biomass is re-layered and subjected to a secondary fermentation in two further COCCUS digesters, each with 2400m3 capacity. Finally, a high grade odour-less fertiliser remains that can be sold loose or packed in sacks.

The British water utility Severn Trent Water supplies its eight million customers with two billion litres of drinking water every year. For this, some 900 GWh of power are drawn from the public grid, which costs the utility around 58 million. To reduce its costs and dependence on the power supply utilities, Severn Trent Water built Britain's rst industrial biogas plant in Stoke Bardolph. The required biomass is harvested from elds that are not able to be used for the cultivation of plants for consumption on account of their natural
mineral concentration. The biogas is consumed by two Vitobloc CHP units, each with an output of 1MW. The resulting electrical and thermal energy is used by the adjacent sewerage plant for treating water. Excess electrical energy is exported to the public grid. As a result of this power generated on site, drawings from the power supply utility were able to be reduced by 20percent in the rst year.

Biogas upgrading
The EUCO TITAN plant by Schmack generates more than four million cubic metres of biogas per annum in Mhlacker, Germany. Carbotech, another member of the Viessmann Group, supplied the necessary technology for upgrading the biogas into bio natural gas, which is injected into the grid operated by the Mhlacker city works department. As a result,
this local authority already produces around one third of the gas demand of its customers. Material for dry fermentation include maize, grass, Sudan grass and waste cereals. EUCO TITAN stands out on account of its high efficiency and is pioneering technology for agricultural enterprises, investors, energy supply utility and city works departments.
