y Chocolate, it does not fall short on the issues of homosexuality due to the fact that it shows that society does not accept this concept, but as Diego tried to tell David, many men are homosexual only they hide it. When David came to visit DiegoI cannot recall if it was during the first or second visitand Diego named men who are known in the society as being homosexual. It that scene he even read a part from a book saying something about all men being homosexual sometime during their life, but a small percentage explore it. You could say that Diego was trying to explain to the people of Cuba that it is acceptable to accept people who are different than what the society accepts. However, at the end we see Diego leaving Cuba, it represents in my opinion that Cuba has a hard time to accept differences in its society. It needs to learn to be more diverse. If you take Diego and make him represent all of the Cuban people who are not accepted in the society due to religious, sexual, or social organization; therefore, when Diego leaves at the end of the movie, it sends a message that people who do not do what the society asks, and then they will be exiled. We can also see that these people did nothing wrong, they only wanted to follow their own believe. On the other hand, David represents the society, as you can see David did everything possible to find something that David (or the outcast people of Cuba) doing illegal, but in the end David befriended Diego. What I think the directors wanted to say was that even if people are

Zaytseva 2 different they have a hard time being accepted into the society of Cuba and most leave the country. Most of the films that we have watched so far portray the community in need of resources, or communities that have the resourcesnot the workers. In Guantanamera we see a major transportation problem. We also see problems with transporting goods. When they stopped traveling, people were selling them food and other things. But when we watch Lista de Espera, we see that those goods were needed at the station, but since there is a transportation problem, the goods do not get delivered. I think that both of these movies showed that Cuba has the resources, only if they could find ways to transport them better; the economy will increase in Cuba. So if we took those goods that people sell on the roads and opened markets in every city, then it will create a trading system in Cuba. By having market systems in Cuba, individuals and people as a whole will benefit by having access to more products and will sell less in the black markets. Another thing that I noticed in the movie Guantanamera, at one stop, which looked like a restaurant, they only sold tobacco and cigars. If the people of Cuba had a different transportation system than these type of stops along the road would have had the necessary supplies to do business and provide service to the people of Cuba. In Guantanamera, Maraino was having problems at every stop due to the fact that he had a woman for each stop and they all wanted to marry him someday. What I think the directors are trying to warn woman not to accept those kind of relationships and also for men to not act that way so that they would not experience problems like Mariano experienced. Not only did Mariano experience these problems by his brother gets hit by things several times. I think his brother represents people of Cuba who then

Zaytseva 3 have to as they say clean up after those people who act like Mariano did. Its a good thing that in the end Mariano decided to have a relationship with one woman. In Lista de Espera, what the directors were trying to show was that if Cuba had its own factories where they made their own supplies and parts, and then they would have fewer problems with transportation. Many times through out the film when the people were trying to fix the bus could not due to the lack of parts in the country. If Cuba had its own factories than when the Soviet Union could not provide parts due to perestroika the people of Cuba would still have the necessary supplies and people who not experience such problems with transportation. Also if the people of Cuba made their own supplies than they would also know how to fix buses. In the movie it showed that everyone wanted to fix the bus but no one knew how to fix it and tell what was wrong except for the character who was pretending to be blind. Overall I really enjoyed these films because they show real life problems that not always get solved at the end, but they do show the people of Cuba some of the major problems and hint on the ways to solve them.
