HEALTH + HOME + FOOD + WEALTH + STYLE = recycle: share this magazine

Turkey time, already? Not for me. I am a vegetarian and have been for over thirty years. But that never stops me from sharing my families enthusiasm for Thanksgiving, who are not vegetarians. This time of year reminds me most of my father who would start reminding us to make room in our freezer or refrigerator for the turkey he would soon arrive with. However, his reminders often started as early as mid October. I miss that and him. Its been four years since he passed away from pancreatic cancer and my world is and will be forever changed without him. My father was a special human being who touched so many peoples lives with his love and generosity. He made the world a better place and he will be forever missed. 8 thats right. No matter what, this is it! 8 rescued cats within five years. Is it a conspiracy? We have lived in our home for over 26 years and up until about 5 years ago we had never seen a stray cat. But when we started our partnership with Forgotten Cats they started to show up. Our theory is that someone has been dropping off these unwanted cats because the location of Forgotten Cats is somewhat of a secret. So whoever is doing this PLEASE STOP!! We are starting to feel like cat hoarders or cat boarders, when in fact with each new cat that has found its way to our door seeking shelter we have tirelessly made endless efforts to find each one a home. We havent been very successful at finding homes except for one. Cat number 8 remained nameless for about a week, with the hope of finding her a good home. I am certain you can guess the end of this story. Cat number 8 is now named China and is here to stay. There will absolutely be no cat number 9and I mean it. If another cat comes crying out our door we are not answering. Dont think we are completely out of our minds; there is a reason to our madness. All of the cats that we have rescued were terribly undernourished and not neutered. Therefore all eight of our cats had the potential of hundreds of other homeless cats. What are people thinking? No matter how wrapped up (no pun intended) you are in this holiday Advertising Inquiries: season, please remember to share your excitement and the joy of the Brian Strauss -Publisher season with those less fortunate. One Thousand Mustaches: A Cultural History of the Mo

by Allan Peterkin

After decades of disaproval in Western culture, the mustache is enjoying a cultural renaissance, thanks to the annual phenomenon of Movember (the international campaign in which men grow facial hair during the month of November to raise funds for prostate cancer research; in 2011, 1.8 million men in fourteen countries participated), and the retro/modern mo's sported by the likes of Ryan Gosling, Ashton Kutcher, and James Franco. Shaving companies are offering newfangled mustache groomers, and even Dr Seuss's mustachioed The Lorax has made a comeback. One Thousand Mustaches is both a lighthearted cultural history and an earnest style manual: it's the story of the 'stache through the ages and its manifestations in politics, war, movies, music, sports, and art, as well as information on various 'stache styles and how to grow and wear them with pride. The book also includes numerous photos and drawings throughout.

Love as Medicine

By Dr Rajiv Parti, M.D. (aka Dr. Raj)

The results of scientific research have led an increasing number of medical doctors and psychologists to a remarkable conclusion. This notable finding is that lovethe selfless, otherdirected love that almost all of us are familiar withcan serve as powerful medicine to strengthen and heal body, mind, and spirit. There is now an enormous amount of evidence supporting this heartening realization, and the evidence continues to pour in. Of course, the idea that love promotes spiritual and psychological wellness wont come as a surprise to many. After all, most of us know that being loved by others and loving them in turn deepens our life satisfaction and provides many reasons to thrive psychologically. And we have long known that nurturing children with love is probably the most important key to their psychological well-being as they mature. What may be something of a surprise is the fact that love also has beneficial effects on our physical health. This has been shown time and again by scientific studies. For example, researchers have found that even something as simple as loving and caring for pets, not only has affirmative psychological and social benefits, it also results in lower blood pressure, triglycerides, and cholesterol levels. In other research, psychiatrist Dr. David Spiegel of Stanford University found that the kind of emotional support that is offered by loving relatives and friends lengthened the lives of women with cancer. Numerous other studies have also demonstrated the salutary physiological effects of loving relationships. One of the main positive physiological benefits of love is in the realm of stress. Stress has been called the ailment of our time due to the many stress-provoking environments and situations we encounter in our daily lives. The onset of stress causes the release of hormones into our blood that result in an increase in blood pressure, a faster heart rate, and hyper-vigilance among its other effects. That in itself is not problematic because to feel stress in the face of a genuine danger is an evolutionary strategy for survival. What causes the problem is that the stress may become chronic due to prolonged worry and anxiety about issues that may face us, whether these be financial, relational, health, or other matters. This experience of persistent, repeated stress, results in stress hormones flooding our body over and over, causing metabolic imbalances that are risk factors in maladies as diverse as heart disease, type-2 diabetes, and cancer. But the presence of love in our lives serves as a strong antidote to stress, helping to keep it from developing into the chronic variety. Loving relationships in which we feel valued by others provide a safe haven from the slings and arrows of daily life. With family and good friends who care for our well-being, we are better able to view whatever issues may weigh on our emotions in new perspectives, thereby lightening their load and their ability to generate stress.

Rajiv Parti. M.D. (aka Dr. Raj) is a world leading specialist in pain management with over 30 years practicing clinical experience. He was the Chief of Anesthesiology at Bakersfield Heart Hospital where he specialized in cardiac anesthesia. In 2005, Dr. Raj personally encountered the first of a series of life threatening health challenges that led him to explore non-traditional evidence based complementary and alternative medicine. Dr. Parti founded the Pain Management Institute of California, and under his direction it has served thousands of patients for acute and chronic pain relief. He now specializes in promoting spiritual wellness and personal growth with various nontraditional healing modalities. His new book The Soul of Wellness: 12 Holistic Principles for Achieving a Healthy Body, Mind, heart, and Spirit by Select Books was released October 16, 2012. And it is not just being loved by others that constitute good medicine for our body. Our own acts of going out to others in loving concern may be even more effective medicine. In loving others we leave the narrow confines of our selfish ego, expanding ourselves to take other beings into our concerns. This expansion of our ego to embrace others strengthens us psychologically by promoting selfconfidence and our sense of self-worth. This, in turn, promotes our physical health by bolstering our immune system and our will to live. After all, as the old song says, What the world needs now is love, sweet love, which is perhaps even more true today than when it was written. And if we know we are providing precious love to the special people in our lives, that knowledge strengthens us in all of our dimensions, psychological, spiritual, social, and physiological. It is important to realize that we can receive some of the psychological, physiological, and other benefits of loving others simply by treating those who pass through our lives with kindness and compassion. These ways of relating to others are similar to love insofar as they are ways in which we expand our egos to embrace

others. Being kind to another being is not a case of full-fledged love, but it is certainly in the neighborhood. That is why treating others with kindness and compassion makes us feel good psychologically and spiritually, while decreasing stress levels and having an overall positive influence on our bodies. In sum, loving relationshipsrelationships that expand us and take us out of ourselveshave many forms. They include love for family members, solicitude for our good friends, and even genuine caring for our household pets. They also include treating others with kindness and compassion. All of these ways of dealing with others are effective and often powerful ways to keep us psychologically and spiritually healthy and happy. And scientific research has shown that at the same time, loving relationships benefit us physiologically by defusing stress and providing our bodily systems powerful reasons to work together harmoniously for health and longevity.

Connecticut River watershed as the nations first National Blueway

and Massachusetts to Connecticut, where it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Some 2.4 million people across almost 400 communities live within the Connecticut Rivers watershed. The non-profit Trust for Public Land estimates that 1.4 million of those residents enjoy the watersheds natural beauty and wildlife and contribute upwards of $1 billion dollars to local economies accordingly each year. The Connecticut River Watershed is a model for how communities can integrate their land and water stewardship efforts with an emphasis on sourceto-sea watershed conservation, said Secretary of the Interior Kenneth Salazar upon announcing the new designation. According to the U.S. Department of Interior, the National Blueway designation differs from existing federal designations for rivers (e.g., Wild and Scenic), which generally cover only a segment of a river and a narrow band of the riparian corridor. In contrast, a National Blueway includes the entire river from source to sea as well as the rivers watershed. A National Blueway designation doesnt establish any new protections for the watersheds in question, but it does open the door to some federal support for existing and/or new local and regional conservation, recreation and restoration projects. In the case of the Connecticut River, the new designation will help by improving coordination between local/regional planning entities and federal agencies such as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The designation should also mean more funding for trail building and forest restoration projects. Its unclear yet when other U.S. watersheds will be designated under the Blueways program, but there are certainly dozens if not hundreds across the country that could benefit from inclusion.

In May 2012 the Obama administration did indeed designate the Connecticut River and its 7.2 million-acre watershed as the first segment of a new National Blueways System, created to help conserve natural amenities and wildlife habitat and to preserve or enhance healthy recreational opportunities within significant river systems across the country. The National Blueways program is part of the larger Americas Great Outdoors Initiative created by the White House to establish a community-driven conservation and recreation agenda for the 21st century. Large blueways such as the Connecticut River watershed are extremely important not only as nurseries for biodiversity and filtration systems for fresh water supplies, but also as outdoor recreational outlets for millions of all-too-cooped-up Americans. The Connecticut River watershed is a fitting first addition to the National Blueways program given its ecological, cultural and recreational importance to millions of Americans along its 410-mile run from the peaks of Vermont along the Canadian border through New Hampshire

TRUE POWER
By Suzanne Eder

I finally got it that my wildest dreams could never come true, until I remained wildly true to myself.
Tama Kieves in Inspired & Unstoppable
In her book and during our conversation, she shared the story of a time, after she had self-published her first book, when she met a woman named Phyllis who seemed like the one the one who could open doors and secure the introductions and connections that would catapult Tama to success. Phyllis had found Tamas book on Amazon and loved it. She was well-connected in the publishing industry and offered to help Tama put together a package that would be sent to the president of a big New York publishing house, a man she knew personally. Ill share the rest of the story in Tamas words: I was a giddy Cinderella who had just met a ticket out of invisibility. But then over the next few weeks, things began to feel anxious and weird. Phyllis didnt return some phone calls. But she was a busy woman and I, an insecure and desperate one, wagged my tail against the odds. Then there were missed deadlines, stories, dramas, and weeks passing by. Finally, she began disappearing altogether, even from cyberspace. I felt as though I was skidding on black ice, still trying to get somewhere. I desperately wanted things to work. I couldnt bear the idea of going back to my life alone, without this hookup to the Emerald City, or, in this case, midtown Gotham. That night, weeks of agony receded and I knew what I had to do, come what may. I had to speak my truth, and risk my one thin bridge to having my book published by a big publisher. I felt surrendered and strangely calm. Spirit got me here and will carry me all the way, I said to myself as willingness, fear, exhilaration and faith warmed my veins like apricot brandy. Suddenly I was willing to believe that a loving universe might have more than just one rickety way for me to accomplish my dreams.

ave you ever had the experience of thinking you understand a particular concept fairly well, then something happens that opens you to getting it at a profoundly deeper level? Conversations with Tama Kieves have a way of stimulating those aha! moments. So does her writing. Things that were merely understood suddenly become known. You gain a newfound appreciation for your own wisdom and your ability to translate it into something meaningful in your life. The concept of being true to yourself in order to live an authentic, fulfilling and genuinely successful life is one of those easily understood concepts. Its touted by every therapist and coach and self-help guru on the planet (including yours truly). Its one that is so commonly repeated and endorsed it feels almost trite. Yet its also one that were subtly and not so subtly encouraged to abandon time and again in order to fit in or to meet the external standards of success so revered in our culture. And time and again, we discover that it simply doesnt feel good to try squeezing ourselves into roles or circumstances or jobs that bear no resemblance to who we really are. Thats why the self-help gurus keep reminding us that we need to live by a different standard. Only being true to ourselves will yield true satisfaction. Tama Kieves does more than merely remind us of that potent truth. She illuminates vividly - through her writing and her life that being true to yourself is not merely a guideline or strong personal value to uphold. It is the seat of your blazing, mountain-moving, joy-loving power to create a life you really want to live.

The next day, Tama told Phyllis aka the Fairy Godmother she no longer wanted to work with her. And the rest, as they say, is history. Tama continued to listen to her heart of hearts, landed a big-league agent to represent her and was published by the publishing company of her dreams. And all because she dared to speak her truth. She dared to be true to herself. Through this experience and others, Tama had a dawning aha! of her own. She began to grasp what it really means to be wildly true to yourself and how much power is unleashed when we commit to that, no matter what. She now states, boldly and calmly: I will walk away, figuratively or literally, from any situation that doesnt feel true to my soul. I will not be walking away from power or opportunity. I will be walking away with power and opportunity. My truth is my power. So is yours. Its where the magic lives. I love how clearly she draws the line between personal truth and personal power or perhaps more accurately, how she shows us that personal truth and personal power are fundamentally the same thing. A good practice to follow, whenever youre feeling powerless, is to see if youve somehow ignored or denied an inner truth. A classic example of how many people give their power away is by denying the truth of their talents, passion and creativity, and remaining stuck in jobs that suffocate or bore them. They convince themselves that the job is their only source of financial security and

that they must stay. They deny the unfathomable intelligence of the universe and Life itself, which wants to thrive through us. Or as Tama says, they havent yet grasped that a loving universe has more than one way for them to accomplish their dreams. And yes, that includes their dreams of financial prosperity. Im not saying that everyone who is frustrated in their job should simply quit and walk away far from it. But a sense of deep powerlessness always indicates a misperception of our true power, talent and possibility. And we can learn to cultivate a truer perception, to stand in our talent and power and passion, before walking away from the job were in. (Of course, if were clearly guided to walk away and we feel deep in our hearts it is the right thing to do, right now then walking away would itself be a reclamation of power.) Start with your intention to do just that to acknowledge and stand in your talent and power and passion. Be willing to consider the possibility that the universe has infinite ways for you to realize your dreams. Even if youre not an entrepreneur or bestselling author like Tama. Let me share the story of a friend of mine who recently went through a highly tumultuous time at work. She works in a large, bureaucratic organization and the chaos was caused by a change in leadership at the highest levels. As part of the transition from one regime to the next, it was decided that certain positions would be redefined and

My friend is a high-potential employee with years of outstanding performance well documented in her file. She is creative, proactive and responsible not to mention highly skilled and immensely talented. Yet the grueling process triggered a sense of self-doubt within her. She doesnt like being interviewed, and kept wondering if she would make it through. She started to feel almost as if she would be lucky to keep her current job, in which she had excelled for yearsand which she was sick of. From my vantage point, I could easily recognize the chaotic transition as a time of great opportunity. From her vantage point it was at best a colossal nuisance and at worst a slap in the face of her many years of hard work. The self-doubt kept surfacing, and her inner wrangling was often matched by unexpected dips and changes in the outer process. It was wearing her down. I kept encouraging her to ignore the outer drama and focus on her immense talents and contributions, and to get clear about the kind of job she really wanted. I knew if she connected with the deepest truth about who she is and what she wants, she would invite opportunity to reflect that truth. Luckily for her although at the time it didnt seem lucky at all, it just seemed like busy work - one of the requirements of the process was for the applicants to compile a portfolio of their achievements. As my friend accumulated and organized the various reports and awards that documented the milestones of her career, she gained a newfound appreciation of herself. And at my urging, she took the time to sit with her journal and describe the kind of job that would best fit her creativity and skill. It felt good to contemplate it and recognize that she was indeed ready for that kind of job. She regained a deep connection with the truth of her talent and passion. Fast-forward to the conclusion of the process. My friend did not retain the job she was in. She was promoted two grades to the highest pay level into a newly created position that matched what

she had written in her journal. Turns out the universe didnt just want her to tread water, it wanted her to move forward. And it created a whole new path for that to happen. Her responsibility in the process was to be true to herself - to stand in the truth of her talent and passion. And that is your responsibility, too. When you do that, opportunity will meet you there. Tama said in our conversation that she finally recognized, humbly yet joyfully, that her talent and genius represent an amazing gift to this planet, and she needed to value it. And she learned that when she values it, so does everyone else. My friend learned the same thing. It is true for her, it is true for Tama and it is true for you. And lets be clear, this is not about being egotistical. It is about honoring the deepest truth of who you are. As Tama says in her book: There comes a time when you will have to stand up for the magnificent truth that trembles in your heart and bones. When you step out in this way, you are actually letting go of your ego, not letting it decide for you. Let yourself feel the truth in those words. Decide to acknowledge the deepest truth of your own talent and passion and possibility. Choose to speak and live from that truth. Remember that your wildest dreams can come true only when you remain wildly true to yourself.

Natural Ways to Boost Your Fertility

As Thanksgiving nears, I see the various depictions of a cornucopia all around me. When I see that horn, overflowing with fruits and vegetables and I cant help but think of its origin in Greek Mythology and how the horn eventually came to symbolize female fertility. I know what youre thinking, Who doesnt? right?! Okay, maybe a few of you. At any rate, I see this powerful symbol of abundance and fertility and I cant help but think it is the perfect time to write about it here. If youre trying to get pregnant, or even if you are trying to keep your body at its most fertile for when you do decide to start trying, there are many tips, tricks, and natural remedies to help you along in your journey. In addition to some of the basics, I also wanted to share with you some of the more current advances in this area, such as herbal remedies, newfangled gadgets, and even phone apps! The Basics About Fertility Whether you are trying to get pregnant or trying NOT to get pregnant, there is basic information about female fertility that
20

you must know and understand. The Fertility Awareness Method (FAM) is a set of practices that are used to help us determine the most fertile and infertile times during a womans menstrual cycle. These practices include monitoring Basal Body Temperature (BBT), Cervical Mucus (CM), and cervical position. Basal body temperature In most women, ovulation will cause the bodys temperature to rise at least 0.4 to 1.0 degrees Fahrenheit (or at least 0.2 degrees Celsius). There are special thermometers you can buy from the drug store that measure BBT, and these special thermometers are more sensitive and accurate than regular thermometers. Your temperature reading will be most accurate if taken before you even get out of bed in the morning. Keep your Basal Body thermometer next to your bed, along with a notebook or other charting system. Try to take it at the same time each morning. At the end of one or two monthly cycles, you will now have a good idea of when ovulation occurred, based on your BBT. In combination with changes noted in cervical mucus, one can develop a fairly accurate plan for pregnancy (approximately 60%

within 3 months; 81% within 6 months; and 91% within 12 months). Cervical Mucus and position Cervical mucus (CM) is produced by the cervix, and it changes in appearance and sensation throughout a womans monthly cycle. Fertile CM decreases the acidity in the vagina, which helps promote sperm life and mobility, helping it move through the cervix and into the uterus, toward the egg. By paying close attention to ones CM, they can track when the body is most likely preparing for ovulation, as well as, when ovulation has passed. As a woman gets closer to ovulation, her CM will become thinner and stickier. When ovulation is about to occur, her CM will be clear, slippery, and very stretchy. In addition to the CM, the position of the cervix will change throughout a womans cycle. During the infertile phase of a womans cycle, the cervix will be low in the vaginal canal and will feel firm to the touch. During the more fertile period of her cycle, the cervix will rise higher in the vaginal canal and it will feel softer to the touch. Keeping track of both your BBT and CM will increase your ability to plan the best times to try to conceive. Visit www.babycenter.com for a free chart you can print out to track your BBT and CM. Note: It is generally advised that you do not douche with anything other than warm water when trying to get pregnant, as it can not only affect the quality and quantity of your CM, it can also change the pH balance inside the vagina, creating an environment that can adversely affect the sperm. Natural Ways to Boost Your Odds There are a number of things you can do to help increase your fertility and increase your odds of conceiving. Diet and exercise both have a big influence on a womans fertility. In addition to making sure you are taking a prenatal vitamin, you want to make sure that you are eating enough protein, iron, and zinc. You also want to make sure that you and your partner are getting enough Vitamin C. Fertility is decreased in both men and women who are deficient in Vitamin C. Moreover, sperm counts increased by almost 60% in research studies where men took 1000mg of Vitamin C, daily, for two months. Women should make sure that they are getting adequate amounts of Vitamin C, but avoid megadoses of it, as it can cause the CM to be drier, thus making it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg. Most prenatal vitamins already have a sufficient amount for women. Being underweight or overweight can cause difficulty with getting pregnant. Research shows that women who are underweight (a BMI lower than 19) take four times as long to get pregnant as someone with a BMI in the normal range (19-24.9). According to reports in the journal Human Reproduction, researchers documented a 4% decrease in conception odds for every point in BMI above 30. For women whose BMI was higher than 35,

there was up to a 43% overall decrease in the ability to conceive. Women with a high BMI also have an increased risk of having gestational diabetes throughout their pregnancy. Herbal Remedies If you have been trying to get pregnant, and have already ruled out any medically-related problems from you and your partners doctors, you may want to try some of the following fertility boosting herbs. Chaste berry- this increases fertility by stimulating the pituitary gland. It is known to help balance sex hormones in women, including: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Stop taking it if you become pregnant. Dong Quai- this Chinese fertility herb helps with regulating menstruation and helps balance estrogen levels in the body. Stop taking it if you become pregnant. Red Raspberry Leaf- this herb is known to strengthen the uterine lining, enhancing the possibility of implantation of a fertilized egg (ovum). Stop taking it if you become pregnant. Evening Primrose Oil- this has been used to help balance female hormones, as well as, aid in the fertile quality of cervical mucus. *For more herbal remedies, take a look at the book The Infertility Cure mentioned in the Resources section at the end of this article. Things to Avoid Most people are aware of the negative effects that smoking cigarettes and/or taking drugs (legal or illegal) can have on male and female fertility. However, there are many less obvious things to avoid when you want to increase your chances to conceive. At the top of my list are: stress, excessive alcohol, excessive caffeine, decongestants, and lubricants during sexual activity that are not fertility-friendly. Stress Stress can have a negative impact on fertility in both men and women. In women, being overly stressed-out can cause irregular menstruation, and in severe cases, can even stop menstruation. In men, stress can cause problems with sexual functioning, as well as, interference in the hormone production needed to produce healthy sperm. Excessive alcohol or caffeine Drinking too much alcohol can affect a womans estrogen and progesterone levelshormones that are vital for fertility. Excessive alcohol intake has also been proven to cause problems with both ovulation and menstruation. In men, heavy drinking can affect the quality and quantity of sperm that they produce. When it comes to caffeine, the research isnt as solid. Some supports green tea (which has small doses of caffeine) due to its

antioxidants, and in fact has been shown to help with CM and thus odds of conceiving. Coffee, on the other hand, does not have the same antioxidant effects, and it has higher amounts of caffeine, thus putting it in the avoid category for some researchers. Both sides seem to agree that there can be too much caffeine which is more than 300mg per day; and levels above that can be detrimental to a womans fertility. Decongestants This one is surprising to a lot of my patients. Over the counter medications containing decongestants (e.g., pseudoephedrine, gauifenesin, etc.) can affect the quality of CM, making it more dry. Some suggest that it can make it dry enough to actually block sperm from being able to pass through the os (i.e. cervical opening) to reach the egg. If you absolutely have to take a medication that has a decongestant during your time of ovulation, be sure to drink a lot of fluids to try to help counter the effects. In addition, you may also want to use a fertility-friendly lubricant to help supplement your own CM. While there is no absolute, cure-all solution, trying some of these things can help. Store-bought Lubrication Many couples who are trying to get pregnant may come to depend on the aid of a lubricant. This may be because they are trying to squeeze in a quickie during a fertile window of opportunity, or because they are trying for several days in a row, and a lubricant can help reduce soreness. Whatever the reason, if you are using your favorite lube while trying to get pregnant, you should keep in mind that not all lubricants are fertility-friendly. The chemicals in regular store bought lubricants (e.g. KY, Astroglide, etc.) can damage or even kill sperm. Some studies have shown a decrease in sperm motility after contact with these lubricants. There are now several fertility-friendly options, including: Pre-Seed, a fertility-friendly lubricant, safe for women who are trying to get pregnant. It can generally be found in your local drugstore. Yes Baby, a fertility-friendly lubricant that is developed and sold out of the U.K. It is Certified Organic, by the U.K.s Soil Association. Conceive Plus, claims to be more than just a fertilityfriendly option. According to the makers, it contains calcium and magnesium ions, which are essential to prolonging sperm viability (keeping sperm healthy) and motility (helping sperm to swim) (www.conceiveplus.com). Widgets, and Gadgets, and Appsoh, my! There are a number of additional tools, gadgets, and even phone apps out there to help couples trying to conceive. Here are a few of my favorite: Basal Body Thermometer: Optimus Petit Sophia Fertility Monitor. It costs approximately $90, but for the money, you get one heck of a helper! It will store your daily temperature for 210 days (six menstrual cycles); it indicates fertile days, possibility of pregnancy, and hypothetical due dates. It even has a PC printout function and an alarm clockto make sure you take your temperature at the same time every day!
22

OV Watch: It costs between $130-170. It detects ovulation and fertility just by touching your skin! By monitoring your skins secretions of chloride ions it notifies you for four days, before ovulation. (Its not as pretty as a Movadobut ya cant have it allyet!) Instead Softcups: Originally marketed for use during menstruation, women trying to get pregnant have found a new use for them. These Softcups can be inserted after intercourse to help keep the sperm close to the cervix, and maximize the chances of one making it to the egg. Phone Apps: My Days, by Christian A. Mueller. It tracks the users period, ovulation, and fertile days. Fertility Friend app for the iphone, by fertilityfriend.com. This app tracks your period, fertile days, ovulation prediction. It allows users to enter their daily temperature, CM, and other customizable data to give you the most accurate data. Similar apps: Ovu View Period Tracker (free), Woman Log Calendar (for Android), and Woman Calendar (for iPhone). The prices range from free to approximately $10.

Say It Now

Thank you,
By Karen Jessee Many years ago just before Thanksgiving, I asked my students to write a thank you note to someone. I prefaced this by saying that when I was a teen, my grandmother, a truly kind and generous woman, had sent me something lovely. The thank-you card meant for her sat on my desk, unsigned and missing a personal note. I procrastinated a little longer, and suddenly, she passed away. I can still picture that thank you card today, and I never forgot how awful I felt that I was so absorbed in my own little world (did I mention I was a teenager) that I couldnt take a moment to write three sentences of thanks and sign my name. I can still recall the silence as students realized that I had once been a teen who made a terrible error in judgment. I asked students to take a moment and think about the people they knew and to write to someone, anyone, who they felt had made some difference in their lives; someone whose help, guidance, comfort, wisdom, had brought them to some level of ease. This was a very personal assignment. I was not going to read the letter; I was not going to grade it. I was going to mark my book that I had seen them working on it. I trusted them to do the right thing. If they felt they would be too embarrassed to actually hand this letter to someone, they could put it under a pillow, in a drawer, a place where the recipient was sure to find it. Should their missive need an envelope, address and stamp, I would help with those details. After the holiday, I asked students if the letter made a difference. Heads nodded. Someone mentioned this had been a good idea. Years later, I learned that one of my students who had been given
24

that assignment had become a teacher herself and was assigning this same letter of thanks in her own classroom. That she had been in high school and was now working at the elementary level was of no matter. It is a valid effort at any age. Last June, I published a story about my mothers wacky wisdom in an article entitled Lessons from the Mother Ship. I wrote about her red lipstick and her snazzy outfits pulled together from the Goodwill so that in her 80s, she was still getting glorious compliments. I revealed how she denied she had any family and claimed she was all alone in the world so others would do things for her; how she refused to gossip, gave things away, fixed up the house, and put all the legal paperwork in order. I wrote how, when the neighborhood changed and she was inundated with college kids and their loud parties, she would introduce herself, and ask for their phone numbers so she could call them instead of the police. Stunned, they would hand over their numbers and the next day, mom would bring them donuts. She knew the meaning of a sweet deal. I got a lot of feedback on that article, and I read it lovingly to my mother after it was published. She was 97, in a nursing home, and dementia was becoming as frequent a visitor as I. She liked it. In hindsight, I should have read it to her more than once. This year, I returned from a study trip to learn that mom had suffered a stroke. I came home to a very different mother than the one I had kissed goodbye. Knowing that all funeral arrangements had been made years ago, I had the emotional luxury of simply helping her to pass on.

Through the memories I whispered, the waltzes I played in the background, and the Chanel #5 I stroked through her hair, I was most thankful that we had spoken of love when we did. One of my friends, a grand dame and former World War II nurse named Lucille, is turning 90. She is sponsoring what she calls a Pre-Bereavement Party. Shes renting a room in a club, planning a buffet, and gathering friends and family NOW to celebrate her life. Shes got a team of friends and family pulling together the details. She wants to hear what people have to say about her while she can still hear what people have to say about her. If folks are going to be throwing superlatives and jokes around the room and telling good stories, she wants to be in on the fun. Shes been to enough Celebrations of Life to know that the people being talked about may never have been talked to. Too late to tell Lucille how great a gal she was and what weve learned from her when shes no longer with us. There is nothing greater and more soothing to the soul than a thankful heart. In our journey through life, we know there was someone somewhere who has shown a kindness or strength we needed, led us down a better path, changed our lives, and influenced us, even if it was ever so slightly, so that we became a better person. Maybe this year, along with the thanks offered over the traditional meal, we take a moment to simply write that someone a note of thanks. It could make a difference just in time.

Secrets For Better Health At Lower Costs?

Picture American healthcare as a tin of fish. We pay for caviar, but are we receiving canned mackerel? Statistics from 2009 show that we cast out $7,960 per person per year. We are grossly outspending the rest of the world. Sweden pays $3722 per year per person. The savings alone could buy every U.S. citizen a new Volvo every 10 years! Is greater health being gained from shelling out all those clams? Sorry Charlie! The level of America health is on a sinking ship. Peering into the depths of the World Health Organizations Healthy Life Expectancy Rankings top ten list, Japan floated to the surface as number one. Then came Australia, France Greece Andorra. NO Americaand, wheres Andorra? With more of the money, technology, hospitals, labs and drugstores, why are we not healthier? The answer can be found by decoding the word disease. We view disease as an entity. What do I have? He gave it to me! How do I get rid of it? In reality, loss of health is more often a result of not having something! The prefix dis means not or lack of . Until more people can recognize that loss of health often results from not having ease or balance in our lives, we will continue to suffer from poorer health outcomes at the highest costs. Understanding balance is central to chiropractic practice, Yoga and other natural disciplines. Treat the imbalance, and the inner potential of the persons health will be released. Take the example of heartburn or indigestion. One approach is to treat the symptoms with medications by altering stomach chemistry. Effectively, the pain vanishes while the drugs are in the system. It returns, and more pills are needed. Even worse, the known alarms of imbalance are masked or ignored. This can lead to more serious problems. Years go by and ulcers form. Stronger medications are used, perpetuating the continued avoidance of the core imbalance. Ignored problems worsen. Sadly, one of these problems could be cancer. A different choice is made. The initial symptom is recognized as the bodys distress call. The status of the persons nutrition, emotional state, level of activity, quality of rest and structural integrity and its relationship to nerve function is investigated. The DIS is located, and a program to create EASE is initiated. Stress-reducing techniques, chiropractic adjustments and nutritional support are provided. The core imbalances are

addressed and removed. The person returns to his or her normal state of health. We must treat the person. Drugs save lives...for the moment. The miraculous abilities of medications in urgent situations must not distract us from the continued pursuit of the underlying imbalance. Treating the symptom alone, and not paying attention to the DIS-EASE of the patient, will continue to cost America billions of dollars and millions of lives. Below is a list of questions to be asked of oneself and/or doctor when facing a health challenge: Is there an imbalance stemming from my diet, exercise routine, rest/sleep, emotional state or my structural/nervous system? Is the treatment or care addressing the problem or the symptom? Do I have to take medication nowif so, forever? Do I have time to see if my body can correct the problem by itself? Am I truly taking responsibility for my health? Below is a list of affirmations and statements of understanding that will promote optimum health creation: Each health challenge is an opportunity to grow and heal! My inner potential is to be optimally healthy! By removing interferences, I will shine with radiant health! It is fun and easy to make changes! I will patiently allow my health to be restored! The answer to Americas poor health dilemma will not come from a pill bottle or politician, but by the understanding of how optimum health can be either prevented or manifested. We can keep eating stinky fish at caviar prices or brighten our plate with the best the sea of health care has to offer, at affordable prices. At the very least, we can elevate our status above Andorras!

HANDS ON HEALTH
by: Ann Wilkinson P.T.M.S,

intricate and profound than we are yet fully aware. With results such as yours being documented; treatment to this area is becoming more accepted and may even become prescribed routine for some of the more obscure symptoms.

Q: A:

I had a radical mastectomy 9 years ago. Afterwards, I had a great deal of body pain that you treated. I found I had great relief from the pain and the feeling of being disconnected to my reconstructed breast went away. Is this a rare ? I have found in most of my patients that 97% of their symptoms are coming from places that can be far away from the site of pain. Many times tightness of the front of the body causes low back pain, tight shoulders causes thoracic pain, tightness in the lungs and rib cage contributes to carpel tunnel and on and on. Surgery is not something to be taken lightly. The desired results for a reconstruction is esthetics. If the surgery looks great, the surgeon has done a fine job. The feeling of tightness or disconnection is not seen as important when the desired goal was achieved. Unfortunately, surgery does impact the fascia which impacts the entire body. The need to free the fascia after healing of surgical scar tissue is often overlooked. When it is attended to the results are far reaching and profound. A scar anywhere in the body can cause pain somewhere else even far away from the origin and anywhere in the body. Many mysterious symptoms have been abated with scar releases. It is actually quite a fascinating phenomena as the fascia is so much more

Q: A:

I have severe pain at my tailbone whenever I do sit ups or any Yoga postures that I pivot from this area, what can be done for this?

There are many situations in life that can cause malalignment of the tailbone or coccyx. Childbirth, falls, and sexual trauma can cause injury here. Symptoms are often felt in the hips and legs and even into both feet when the tailbone is affected. The coccyx often fold under like a dog with its tail between its legs. This at times, may require internal treatment to mobilize this bone into proper position. Your tailbone sound like it is doing the opposite, poking outward. This is easier to treat and can be treated with more superficial techniques. The muscles influencing the tailbone will need to be released and free of trigger points. The bones of the pelvis and lower extremities must be aligned. The fascia associated with the dural tube should be lengthened. Creating space, many bones will easily find their way into the natural and correct position. A technique called integrated manual technique is a subtle energy technique affecting bony alignment is very effective for this little yet very significant bone. The tailbone is the rudder of the spine. When the position is restored it rarely goes back out of alignment. Many practitioners are not aware of how easy this area is to treat and when left untreated how much discomfort it can cause.

Gold Bead Implantation

Q: A:

Ive heard about a procedure called Gold Bead Implantation in dogs for hip dysplasia and Wobblers disease. Could you give some information about what this is and what is involved in the process? Gold Bead Implants in dogs is a very interesting topic and worthy of discussion. First, a bit of history is in order. In the 1970s President Richard Nixons trips and discussions with China opened up a door of opportunity regarding healing from an Eastern point of view. Acupuncture was gaining a foothold in the United States and, in particular, in the veterinary profession. A group of forward thinking veterinarians established organizations such as The International Veterinary Acupuncture Society, The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association and The American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture. The American public was becoming more aware of alternative methods of healing both for themselves and their pets. Individuals that had positive experiences with non-conventional modalities such as acupuncture, chiropractic, herbology, or homeopathy, for example, began to question whether these same methods would be helpful to their companion animals. Fortunately, after many decades, the general public has become more aware of the benefits of alternative healing methods. The increasing use of the internet has also allowed people to research and become more knowledgeable about these topics. Veterinary acupuncture took hold in the 1970s. Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific points on the body, typically utilizing thin, flexible needles, for the purposes of healing. Stimulation of acupuncture points causes effects which alter physiological or biochemical conditions within the body. Acupuncture can release neurotransmitters and neurohormones into the bloodstream and cerebral spinal fluid. Acupuncture can stimulate nerves, relieve muscle spasms, stimulate the bodys immune system, relieve pain and help maintain the bodys homeostasis. Acupuncture points can be stimulated by dry needles, aquapuncture, moxibustion, electricity, laser and the implantation of gold or other metals. The use of gold beads in veterinary medicine as a form of acupuncture stimulation was first attempted in the United States by Dr. Grady Young from Georgia. His techniques were modified and researched by Dr Terry Durkes in 1975. Dr. Durkes continues his clinical research in this area to the present. I had the good fortune to learn the gold bead procedure from this great master more than a decade ago.

The Gold Bead Implantation procedure is basically an extension of the acupuncture procedure. Correctly placed, the beads provide long term stimulation of the specific acupuncture points on a permanent basis. In my practice, patients are placed under general anesthesia and the area prepared with a surgical scrub. The beads are less than 1/16th of an inch in diameter. A 14 gauge, 1 inch needle on a 3 cc syringe is utilized. Three or four beads are implanted at each site based on body weight. Most beads are placed into acupuncture points. If beads are even 4-5 mm off the precise point, they will have no effect. This is why it is essential that this procedure only be attempted by a certified veterinary acupuncturist with advanced training and experience in Gold Bead Implantation. Generally, pets that undergo this procedure are sent home the same day. Follow up examinations, if required, are usually on a weekly basis. The scientific basis of how the beads work is still speculative. It is thought that the beads impart a slight positive electric charge to the treatment area that tends to have excessive negative charge. Another possible explanation says that gold ions are released from the implanted gold and diffuse into the surrounding tissues causing specific changes. Medical conditions that can benefit from Gold Bead Implantation include the following: wobblers disease, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, degenerative joint diseases, intervertebral disk disease, epilepsy, seizures, carpal and tarsal problems, lick granulomas, traumatic nerve injury, brachial plexus injury, fecal and urinary incontinence, asthma, arthritis and allergic dermatitis. The list continues to expand as more clinical information comes to light. As an example, dogs with hip dysplasia that are less than 7 years old have a 98% success rate, while those that are between 7 and 12 years have an 80% success rate. Green Tips & Tricks

Consuming less is something most of us can and should* do. The green benefits are obvious: reducing humanitys rate of use of natural resources. When less refers in particular to consuming food, there are bonus benefits for body, mind and spirit.

eighty percent of their capacity, and he repeats a Japanese proverb: eight parts of a full stomach sustain the man; the other two sustain the doctor. Buettner has packed The Blue Zone with insights from centenarians about living life well. Their stories cover everything from child rearing to learning how to be likable, from getting rich to findingand keepinglove in your life. From them we can all learn how to create our own personal Blue Zones and start on the path to living longer, better [greener] lives. Eat Less Eat less. Simple but not easy in this part of the world surrounded in one [grocery store] aisle by more kinds of food than will ever be known in a Congolese lifetime. (The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver, Harper Collins, NY, 1998.) Every year an obesity report is issued by Trust for Americas Health (TFAH) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). Every year data from every state show obesity increasing. This years report, just released, has been making headlines because its research predicts dramatic escalation over the next 20 years of numbers of obese adults, along with related disease rates and health care costs. Obesity means being 20% heavier than ones ideal weight. Twenty-nine per cent of Delawareans are obese, putting us in 19th place. Mississippis 37% fatties puts that state in first place. Save $Two Billion If current patterns continue Delawares 2032 ranking will be #3 with 65% of our residents obese. If we maintain our current status, wed save Delaware two billion dollars in health care costs over the next 20 years. Buettners research partner in Okinawa was Dr. Craig Willcox who postulates that this simple but powerful practice may amount to a painless version of caloric restrictiona strategy that has been shown to prolong life in laboratory animals and has been associated with better heart health in humans. Some of the benefits of cutting calories may lie in reduced cellular damage from free radicals.Losing just 10% of ones body weight helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, which reduces the risk of heart disease. Willcox wrote with his brother Craig and Makoto Suzuki the NY Times Bestsellers, The Okinawa Program (Clarkson Potter, 2001) and The Okinawa Diet Plan (Three Rivers Press, 2005).

*I aspire to refrain from shoulding. Mostly because Im sure I know so little about anything, and certainly almost nothing of the big picture. However, Im urging you and all reasonably nourished human beings to eat less. The physical effects improve health. The mental effects promote well-being as a result of gently practicing self-restraint and of mindfully discerning that moment when enough has been eaten to satisfy your bodys needs. The spiritual benefits raise consciousness and promote happiness as we evolve towards higher standards of integrity. Just eat less. Simple but not easy. Hara Hachi Bu While most Americans keep eating until their stomach feels full, Okinawans stop as soon as they no longer feel hungry. If youre lucky enough to eat with Okinawan elders, youll invariably hear them intone this Confucian-inspired adage before eating: hara hachi bua reminder to stop eating when their stomachs are 80% full, writes Dan Buettner in The Blue Zone: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Whove Lived the Longest (National Geographic, Washington, D.C. 2008). He calls this Pacific archipelago a Japanese Hawaii, which Chinese explorers dubbed land of the immortals. Despite the ensuing years of Chinese, and then Japanese, domination, a devastating world war, famines, and typhoons, Okinawa can still claim to be home to some of the worlds longest lived people, states Buettner. Longevity Pockets Blue zones is a term coined a decade ago by National Institute on Aging demographers to designate longevity pockets around the world with Okinawa ranking among those at the top of the list. Wikipedia reports, As of the early 21st century, Okinawans, through practicing hara hachi bu, are the only human population to have a selfimposed habit of calorie restriction. Almost 29% of Okinawans live to be 100, about four times the average in western countries. The website also gives historical background of a Zen book written circa 1300, which recommends practitioners eat about two-thirds of their capacity. 80% Sustains Man Modern Zen Master Hakuun Yasutani advises his students to eat only

Eat Mindfully Dr. Brian Wansink, author of Mindless Eating (Bantam Books, 2006) told Beuttner, Theres a significant calorie gap between when an American says, Im full and an Okinawan says, Im no longer hungry. We gain weight insidiously, not stuffing ourselves, but eating a little bit too much each daymindlessly. Most people are terrible at estimating how many calories theyve eaten today, yesterday or last weekCaloric content of food is typically underestimated by about 20%. Wansink has conducted experiements with caloric estimations, discovering the larger the meal, the worse the underestimationlike, 50% Shave Off 5% Ive spent a phase or two of this life counting calories, and find more interesting this endeavor to discern 80%-full. You should know I have trouble reading my cars oil dipstick. A year into implementing this new and improved paradigm, Im inspired to continue. First, Ive realized that I eat to about 120% full. Most days I have two meals and almost no snacks. I truly like to feel full. I chew my food thoroughly, and enjoy whole grains and fresh produce, so I dont feel stuffed. It has been comfortable and actually fun to gently challenge myself to shave off 5%. For example, Ive stopped using tartar sauce on my fish. It is so easy for me, it does not feel like a sacrifice. Eating a slightly smaller portion of dessert has also been easy. I put less on my plate to start with so theres no waste. I can always have more.

Enjoy Food and Friends Small improvements over time lead to big, lasting benefits. This holiday season, and the whole year through, youll be healthier, more comfortable, and slimmer if you endeavor to stop eating when your hunger is sated. Like so many lifestyle summaries, it sounds and is simple, but perservering is incredibly difficult. However, as you eat, just the repeated attempts to tune into your bodys declining level of hunger or rising level of satiation will bring forth healthier eating habits. Meanwhile, enjoy your food and the folks you eat with.

When You Cant Take It Anymore: The Gift That Awaits You
Life is not a straight line. As much as we wish it was a straight line, and boy that would be really nice, it is not. Life doesnt follow the mantra, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Life feels more like a graph of the stock market on some days. But as the Rolling Stones said, You cant always get what what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need. This is the case of many of the individuals who have sought out my services over the past fourteen years. Whether they feel as if they are spinning their wheels, or that their life conditions have not or cannot meet their blueprint for their life, they are presented with an opportunity. This is not positive thinking mumbo jumbo; it is truth. Simply put: very often, the problem is our solution. Okay, I know your what you are thinking... what in the heck does that mean? Have you ever noticed that it seems as if the very thing you are lacking is what you would need in order to get by? Life has a way of becoming a very blunt teacher. I agree that often the lessons dont feel good and often they will test us on the deepest level, but the lessons are here to serve us, and that is the opportunity. We are all powerful beyond measure. We possess massive strength, courage, and love. Yet we often live as if we are delicate and fragile. I believe and have witnessed the human spirit rise above the ordinary into the extraordinary. I have seen firemen rush into a burning building to save a child; I have seen parents courageously love their dying child; and I have seen my own mother keep the family together when my father was out of work. Yes, we are powerful beyond measure. Yes, we are very flexible, but we must believe that we are in order to be. As the adage goes, change is inevitable, growth is optional. In the face of great challenges and adversity, often our knee-jerk reaction is to go into protection mode, but we can learn to respond instead of react. This is where the rubber meets the road. All that we seek is within us. We learned this lesson as children watching the movie, The Wizard of Oz. The Lion had the courage all along; the Tin Man had the heart; the Scarecrow had the brain; and Dorothy always had the ability to go home. Perhaps the greatest opportunity is that when life seems to weigh the most, this becomes our greatest moment to look inside... not to blame, but to resonate with what has been the truth and is the truth, if we choose to accept it. Who you are at your core is greater than any problem you may have. When you accept that in your heart, you become free... liberated. No, your problems dont instantly go away, but you now become able to respond. Pain is not eternal, but suffering is, and you can always do something - no matter how small - to begin to move out of pain and into a better place. The problem is the solution? Yes, it is. For without it, we would never know how far we can actually bend and how strong we really are. Till next month, I wish you love and passion.

It May Be Your Thyroid After All: An Integrative approach to Hypothyroidism

By Ben Briggs RPh, CNC, IACP

Have you suspected that your have a low thyroid function, yet your blood testes indicate your thyroid values are normal? Dr. Broada Barnes M.D. spent a lifetime researching thyroid dysfunction. In his book, Hypothyroidism: The Unsuspected Illness, he reveals that upwards of 40% of all American suffer from hypothyroidism, yet only about 10% of the patients tested will be properly diagnosed and that was predicted over 40 years ago. In todays world that percentage could be much higher according to Dr. David Brownstein M.D. Let me explain the shortcomings of conventional thyroid blood analysis. Conventional Thyroid laboratory blood testing is a quantitative analysis. The type of testing only evaluates how much thyroid hormone is in the blood stream or how much the pituitary hormone (TSH-thyroid stimulating hormone) is present. These quantitative values are only beneficial in diagnosing primary hypothyroidism. In other words, if the thyroid gland is failing, then the levels on the thyroid hormone (t-4) will be low and the TSH will be elevated. In the past, qualitative analysis, a thyroid tolerance test i.e., an evaluation of the thyroid activity was measured. These tests were replaced in the mid-80s because of costs. Just like diabetic testing, a glucose tolerance test (to evaluate the activity of the hormone insulin) finds out whether the hormone insulin works or has become resistant (inactive). This term for insulin resistance refers to Type II Diabetic condition. Another way of looking at hormones that are present and appear normal is to think of these hormones outside the cell where they have no activity. T-4 (the primary thyroid hormone) is produce by the thyroid gland, travels in the bloodstream and when it reaches the cell receptor-site transfers into the cell and converts to T-3 (the active form of thyroid hormone) and enters the nucleus of the cell where it triggers (fuels) the mitochondria (the energy producing portion of the cell), raising the body temperature. When the T-4 cannot convert to T-3 we have symptoms of low thyroid, even though the thyroid quantities appear normal to the practitioner. This article will focus on a newer integrative concept approach to thyroid conditions called Type II Hypothyroidism, Thyroid Resistance. An Integrative approach to hypothyroidism includes blood analysis; a record of basal body temperature and signs and symptoms to identify previously undiagnosed hypothyroid patients.
50

The body has approximately 70 trillion cells and each cell, with some exceptions (red blood cells), have mitochondria produce energy. With inadequate mitochondrial function there is a reduction in temperature and diminished production of enzymes needed for every metabolic pathway in the body. If low function, there is a low basal body temperature. Dr. Barnes used a simple temperature test to assess thyroid function. Temperatures taken first thing in the morning before getting out of bed for 5 consecutive days should average above 97.8 degrees. For menstruating patients, this should be done on day 2-6 of menstrual cycle. Often patient/clients will comment, Ive always had a low temperature! This is one of the first signals that you may have a low thyroid function, i.e. low T-3 inside the cell to fuel the mitochondria. Normal T-3 in the blood does not mean that it is at the site of action at the intracellular mitochondria. In order for the thyroid hormone to become active it must enter the cell through the cell wall. T-4 (inactive) conversion to T-3 (active) is accomplished by the enzyme iodothyronine 5-deiodinase, is needed. The enzyme consists of Vitamin-D, Iodine, Selenium, Manganese, Vitamin-A and Zinc. These ingredients are all fatsoluble. If you have low levels of any other these key nutrients, or have mal-absorption due to excessive use of laxatives, fat absorbing prescription medications or no gall bladder, then the enzyme may be inadequate to convert T-4 to T-3. Other pharmaceuticals that interfere with this process are, certain antidepressants, antiepileptic, steroids, Fluoride, beta-blockers, anti-fungals, synthetic estrogen replacement, including oral contraceptives. Other factors that interfere with this conversion are excesses in soy and cruciferous vegetables and heavy metal toxicity. Additional evaluations should include Ferretin (iron transporter/storage) at levels above 100 and B-12 above 600. These evaluations, along with a complete thyroid panel consisting of TSH, Total T-4, Total T-3, Free T-4, Free T-3, Anti-PTO and T-3 Uptake and a little know test called Reverse T-3 and long with a clinical assessment of symptoms are important evaluations of an Integrative approach to thyroid dysfunction. So, if you have suspected your thyroid is not working properly yet your blood evaluations appear normal and you have all or some of the following symptoms, you may have an undiagnosed Type II Hypothyroid condition. These symptoms include: Angina,

high cholesterol, brittle nails, ridged nails, cold hands and feet, constipation, essential hypertension, swollen eyelids, loss of the outer portions of your eyebrows, fatigue, hair loss, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, inability to concentrate, infertility, irritability, menstrual irregularities, morning headaches, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, nervousness, poor memory, puffy eyes, slow starter in the mornings, slow heart rate or weight gain. Notable is the red hair gene. If you or your close relatives have red hair, this could predispose you to thyroid disorders. Other chronic conditions or diagnosis that may be thyroid related include Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, MS or RSD. When it comes to prescription thyroid replacement therapy, I only recommend bio-identical forms of T-4 and T-3 combinations. Two FDA approved versions are Armour Thyroid and Nature-Throid (nature-throid.com). I prefer Nature-Throid because it is hypoallergenic and comes in multiple strengths to fit the patients custom needs for therapy. Most physicians are unaware of this product because it is not marketed to them as the synthetic versions. Keep in mind, when transitioning to natural thyroid; often the blood analysis will appear off . This is because the TSH test is designed to look for synthetic T-4. In time the blood values will adjust with proper dosing, but this may take 6-8 months, but you will notice improvement. In 1999 the New England Journal of Medicine stated that Armour Thyroid had better clinical outcomes than Synthriod, but most physician prescribe the later. As a Compounding Pharmacist, we also make custom

formulations of thyroid hormones. Type-II Hypothyroidism is full recognized by Integrative Physicians throughout the country as a viable condition. Many patients suffer needlessly because conventional medicine relies on laboratory testing as the sole criteria for diagnosing hypothyroidism. Laboratory analysis alone does not take into consideration thyroid hormone activity at the cellular level where it has therapeutic impact. Therefore thyroid hormone resistance needs to be recognized and treated appropriately to help individuals overcome the multiple conditions related to hypothyroidism.

Chocolate Apricot Tart

Crust: 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup raw whole peeled almonds 3 tablespoons sugar 1/4 teaspoon fine salt 1 stick cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 2 1/2 tablespoons vodka Apricot and Chocolate Filling: 1 cup dried apricots 1/3 cup brandy or cognac 5 ounces bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped 5 ounces good quality semisweet chocolate, finely chopped 1 cup half-and-half 3 large egg yolks 1/4 cup sugar 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla paste or extract 1/3 cup heavy cream
Directions For the crust: Combine the flour, almonds, sugar and salt in a food processor and blend until the nuts are finely ground. Add the butter and pulse until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Pour in the vodka and 1/2 tablespoon water and pulse until the dough just comes together in a soft dough. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap, press it into a disc and refrigerate until slightly firm, about 20 minutes.
52

Makes One 9-inch tart Turn the dough out into a 9-inch tart pan with a removable bottom. Top with a piece of plastic wrap and press the dough out evenly through the plastic wrap on the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Freeze until firm, about 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Pierce the dough lightly with a fork, and then line the crust with parchment or foil and fill with pie weights, beans or rice. Bake until the crust sets, about 20 minutes. Remove the parchment and beans and then return to the oven until the crust turns a rich golden brown, about 15 minutes longer. Let cool. For the apricot and chocolate filling: Combine the apricots, brandy and 1/4 cup water in a microwave-safe bowl. Cover and microwave for 2 minutes, and then set aside to plump. Put the chocolates in a medium bowl. Heat the half-and-half in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk together the eggs and sugar in a separate medium bowl, and then gradually whisk in the heated cream. Pour back into the pan and cook, stirring constantly with a heatproof spatula, over medium-low heat until thick, about 1 minute. Pour the mixture over the chocolate, let set for 5 minutes, and then whisk in the butter until very smooth. Blend the apricots and their liquid with the vanilla in a food processor until very smooth. Spread 3/4 cup of the mixture over the bottom of the crust. Top with the chocolate mixture. Cover loosely and refrigerate until set, about 3 hours or up to overnight. Whip the cream until it barely holds soft peaks. Whisk in the remaining apricot mixture to make a smooth thick cream. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. Add a few dollops and serve
