Journal Article Explored similarities and differences between Filipino and Mexican-American primigravidas in socialsupport networks, type of support received, and expectations regarding care from health care providers. 42 Filipino women (mean age 25.31 yrs) and 42 Mexican-American women (mean age 21.07 yrs) in their 2nd trimester of pregnancy participated. Convenience sampling was used, and face-to-face interviews using the Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire were conducted in Filipino and Spanish. The profiles obtained for both groups were similar in sociodemographic characteristics; possession of an adequate social support network, predominantly composed of the spouse and family members; and expectations of more personalized care and decreased waiting time than transpired. Journal Article This study is the first phase of a project to develop a culturally-appropriate, familymediated socialsupport intervention program. This phase consisted of in-home interviews with 23 female and 5 male 24-45 yr old AfricanAmerican (AF) parents and 14 female and 14 male 31-66 yr old Filipino-American (FA) parents who were not receiving counseling or social services for parent-child conflict, and self-reported adequate personal and family functioning. Social network size averaged 32 and 38 members for AF and FA mothers respectively, and 24 and 29 members for AF and FA fathers. Most parents reported that fewer than 50% of their network members knew each other. Data also suggest that parents reported a generally positive orientation to utilizing support resources, and favorable perceptions of and satisfaction with support form family and friends. Journal Article Investigated health-related behaviors, health locus of control, and social support of Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong. 290 female Filipino domestic workers (aged 18-60 yrs) residing in Hong Kong completed surveys concerning mental health symptoms, health-related behaviors, health locus of control, and social support. Results show that the 4 top ranking symptoms of mental distress included waking in the early hours, loneliness, worry, and taking a long time to get to sleep. Constant pain and pain at night were frequently experienced symptoms. In general, the level of health-related behaviors was high, with a satisfactory diet and low rates of alcohol, nicotine, and coffee consumption. However, few Ss

had previously undergone a Pap smear. There were also low scores for other preventive health practices. Dental health featured highly as a preventive health measure. Reinforcement for health behaviors was seen as either a matter of chance or being influenced by powerful others for 2/3 of Ss.
