Seagrove pottery shops celebrate anniversaries

People celebrate anniversaries in numerous ways. Some throw parties, some go on vacation and some have special dinners. In Seagrove, we fire up the kilns and the grills, open our doors and invite everyone to come celebrate with us. Three Seagrove pottery shops will be doing just that as they celebrate their shop anniversaries with special events this summer. Bruce and Photo provided by Lathams Pottery Janice Latham are celebrating the 20th anniversary of Lathams Pottery in a big way on July 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The open house celebration will feature new pottery items and old forms that havent been made in a while. Those pots will be specially signed to commemorate Lathams 20th anniversary. In addition to specially signed pots, there will be lots of door prizes. The Lathams are offering a 20 percent discount on their special day and will serve hot dogs and refreshments from noon until 2 p.m. As an added bonus, Lathams Pottery has a blueberry farm and the blueberries should be in season for the anniversary celebration. Lathams Pottery is located two miles north of Seagrove on U.S. Highway 220 Alternate. For more information, call (336) 873-7303 or email LathamsPottery@ embarqmail.com. Michle Hastings & Jeff Brown Pottery and Eck McCanless Pottery are located less than a mile from each other and both shops happened to open in the middle of July, a year apart. The potters from years ago supplemented their income and their diets by farming. Two Seagrove pottery shops are carrying on that tradition by cultivating farms that offer fresh eggs and produce to the public. If youve read past summer issues of In the Grove, then you may already be familiar with Lathams Pottery Farm and its

offering of fresh berries and other produce. This year the Lathams have focused on their blueberry farm and have plenty of juicy blueberries available for purchase. From time to time there will still be other produce available in the pottery shop, like tomatoes, okra, cantaloupe, watermelon and other fresh from the garden Cont. on next page
