Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 30, 2013

April 24, 2011 , 2010

Every parish in the Diocese is required to have an audit done every three years. Someone from the Finance Office of the Diocese was here last month to perform the audit & spent quite a few hours with Deacon Pete reviewing not only our financial books but procedures as well. We received a detailed summary and a member of the Finance Office of the Diocese spent a few minutes reviewing it with us at our last Finance Council Meeting. Thanks to the work of Deacon Pete, all is in good order. The fiscal year comes to a close at the end of this month & we have successfully prepared our budget for 2013-2014. So let me take this opportunity to thank you for your weekly sacrificial offerings in gratitude for Gods blessings. Thank you for the donations you make when we have a second collection to help those in emergency situations, like we did recently. And thank you for your continued faithfulness to the Capital Campaign pledge we made last year. Those quarterly checks that we receive are a very big help in meeting our budget. If you need collection envelopes, please dont hesitate to let us know & well be happy to help with that. Hopefully we remember that this is part of our sacrificial gift to God and his Church when we offer our financial support as well as all the other sacrifices of our time and efforts when the gifts of bread & wine are brought forward at Mass. Finances of course require a good knowledge of mathematics. I never liked algebra, but I persevered through it so that I can be adequately equipped for overseeing the financial responsibilities of a parish. I recently heard that 4 out of 3 people have a hard time with math. Luckily Im not one of them. I ask for your prayers on behalf of Ray Hirsch, a very active & devoted member of the parish. On Tuesday of this past week he had surgery to remove his right kidney which was diseased. He will be in recovery at the Cleveland Clinic for about a week, then has about 7 weeks of recovery at home. Ray has been a very good friend of mine for 27 years & I am grateful for all he has done for me & for our parish. He deserves our appreciation and our prayerful support during this time. Please say a Hail Mary for him as you read this now & continue to keep him in your thoughts.

The Church is perfectly clear that Euthanasia---the killing of the handicapped, the sick, and the dying--- is absolutely forbidden. Today, people often try to get around the 5th Commandment with seemingly humane arguments. Euthanasia is not a humane solution. From the Vatican Instruction Donum Vitae (1987), No one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right, directly or indirectly, to destroy an innocent human being.
