variety of surfaces. The top film is kept on (unless spiral wrapping) whilst the material fully cures to give a hard, abrasion resistant/smooth and tough finish. FibaRoll is supplied with the top surface outermost on the roll and should not be applied back to front as there is a protective veil near the top surface, which aids chemical resistance and weathering.
FibaRoll in wooden stillages. 20 Rolls per stillage. Stillages can be triple stacked.
FibaRoll in boxs. Note the cardboard supports keeping the roll from being damaged. 25 rolls per pallet.
FibaRoll. This roll has been removed from its open ended bag. Note that you can see the top surface; the other side goes down onto the substrate surface.
FibaRoll is supplied on rolls wrapped in a black UV blocking bag to exclude any light. The roll core is supported at each end to prevent flat spots developing during storage. The storage bags are double ended allowing removal from either end. FibaRoll can be cut using a modelling knife or scissors however please remember to keep the cut pieces out of daylight prior to application. A typical construction of FibaRoll is shown below. The veil is of chemical resistant glass and ensures excellent weathering and performance in immersion conditions.

The barrier films help to reduce styrene vapour escaping, helping to ensure a safe and acceptable working environment. Weathering and UV performance is good for all products with an expected resin weight loss of 1-2% over 10 years. The construction of FibaRoll includes a non-woven glass tissue on the top surface, which provides excellent weathering performance and chemical resistance. In addition the construction lends itself to being re-coated with a resin system which may be necessary after 10-15 years giving the system a life span well over 25 years. FibaGel is supplied in 2.5 kgs cans and is essentially the same base resin used in FibaRoll. These resins are used as primers, fillers or as coatings.
2. Recommended FibaRoll and FibaGel products for insulation protection applications FibaRoll FR M1 Fire Retardant Low Smoke
FibaRoll FR M1 has been developed to have good fire and smoke performance and has been independently tested for fire to Class 1 BS476 part 7 (Warrington Fire Research, UK) M1 NFP92-501 Epiradiateur Test and to Class 1 ASTM E84 (Omega Point labs, USA). FibaRoll FR has also been tested and passed the International Maritime Organisations fire and smoke test and has therefore been accepted by Lloyds for use at sea (Warrington Fire Research). This grade combines fire performance with good chemical resistance and excellent mechanical properties. This product has been used to protect insulation on vessels, vessel tops, pipelines and a wide variety of applications within refineries and chemical plants. FibaRoll FR M1 has a maximum operating temperature of 100C with peaks up to 160C. Please refer to specific data sheets for full information on the physical properties of each grade. All physical and chemical resistance properties quoted in the data sheets refer to fully cured FibaRoll products. FibaRoll requires Ultra Violet (UV) light (wavelength 360 420 nm) to cure. For applications where natural daylight is very low or non-existent a suitable artificial light source (contact us for details) is required to cure the material. Both FibaRoll and FibaGel products have a standard colour range of natural, white and grey however other colours are available but there are minimum order requirements, please contact us for details. Shelf life FibaRoll FR M1 - 6 months from date of manufacture.

FibaRoll is available in three standard thickness 1000 microns, 1500 microns and 2000 microns. FibaGel Material and Grades FibaGel can be used as a primer to improve adhesion to steel terminations. FibaGel has two curing mechanisms namely by UV light as per the FibaRoll or cold cure (CC) method, which uses the addition of a catalyst which gives a chemical reaction cure. The FibaGel UV is cured as per the FibaRoll by ultra violet light and subsequently the cure time is light dependent. On a sunny day the cure times for thin applications can be as little as 10 minutes. The cold cure (CC) uses the addition of a catalyst that must be mixed into the gel resin and this gives a cure time of 30-45 minutes dependent on temperature. All grades are also available in a standard viscosity or a low viscosity (LV) version that can be brush / roller applied.

Storage conditions FibaRoll and FibaGel products should be stored inside in cool dry and well ventilated conditions away from direct sunlight with temperatures not greater than 25 oC in its original packaging. FibaRoll must be supported at all times and kept horizontal at all times. For extended over-seas container travel were the expected temperatures are likely to be above 35-40 oC for long periods we would recommend a refrigerated container. 3.0 Surface preparation procedures New insulation materials by their nature require no preparation however the common forms of insulation materials like foamglass, mineral wool or PUR / PIR can be supplied with a foil face lining material. This is obligatory on vertical surfaces such as tank walls and a beneficial addition on pipework. Foil faced materials aid FibaRoll applications because the foil linings can be cleaned of dust and debris easily and this will help adhesion strengths. The foil linings also assist with the adjustment of uncured FibaRoll during application as you can peel back the FibaRoll without reducing its tack / stickiness greatly. All insulation materials must be closely inspected prior to the application for damage, areas of dampness and particularly with mineral wool areas of low density. With mineral wool we would prefer to utilise densities above 125 kgm3 as these densities provide a firmer substrate to wrap onto. As FibaRoll is a soft mouldable sheet material it is worth noting that it will take the shape of the substrate being applied onto.

Some applications may require a metal halide lamp plus protective glasses. The best areas in which to cut FibaRoll should be well ventilated and well lit with a non UV containing light source (household light bulbs and fluorescent tubes are OK). A steel topped table is highly recommended with a FibaRoll stand at one end so that the material can be run out easily whilst being suspended and cut to length. We recommend that the material is run out with the yellow film uppermost. This will help reduce the incidence of wrinkles and laminations. When cut, Fibaroll should be either

carried flat to the application area or rolled onto a round core (as supplied). This will ensure that there are as few creases or folds in the material as possible. The material should be protected from any UV light sources until just prior to application and the open ended black bags supplied are useful in this.

pressure is applied to the joint by using a roller. It is sensible to stagger the horizontal joints where possible. FibaGel may be required to seal any joints, which do not look watertight. The top film is removed only when curing has completed.
Pipe
Underlap strip joint (minimum width 100 mm); this is also overlapped onto itself.
The underlap strip is placed at appropriate distances along the pipe so that the sheets of FibaRoll meet on top of the strips and are butted together. The underlap strips are overlapped themselves and the top film removed. The strongest FibaRoll joint is wet FibaRoll onto wet FibaRoll. If a strip cures and the top film was removed then this rough surface is an adequate surface to apply more FibaRoll onto with further surface preparation. Each joint and seam must be rolled down to ensure that it is closed.

b) Bends/Elbows
The two preferred methods are to cut a lobster back or strips. The application is started at the lowest point of the bend. Cut strips of FibaRoll are applied to the insulated pipe where the lobster back pieces are to be joined. The top film is stripped from these strips and the lobster back pieces are applied directly onto them using hand pressure. The lobster back pieces are butt joined together and the seams smoothed with a cloth or a hand roller. After application, FibaGel should be used if required to seal any joints.
Elbows
Typical cut pieces to create an elbow joint with some of the required tools
The strips of FibaRoll that go beneath the lobster back pieces. Note that the top film has been stripped.
c) Tees
First, cut two strips to go below the seams at the collar area to cover the junction between the two pipes. This should be at least 30mm wide and cut in two allowing for a vertical overlap. Page 9 of 30

Apply these strips as shown below and remove the top film. Remove the top film from the collar. Cut the pipe sections as illustrated to cover the pipes and overlap the collar by at least 50mm if possible. After application use FibaGel to seal any joints if necessary.
d) Reducers
In most cases, it will be necessary to cut strips wider at one end than the other to follow the dimensions of the reducer although it can be possible to cut a cone shape. overlap each other for 20mm at the underside of the pipe. Inspect carefully and apply FibaGel to any areas not completely closed. Note: Where there are small pipes, instruments or trace heating lines etc, entering/protruding from the insulation system this treatment may be cumbersome in which case a combination of FibaGel and small strips of FibaRoll will work better.

Before Repair
After Repair
Repairing Procedure for wrinkle occurred from roll and application If the above wrinkle is left without repair, mold may occur in the wrinkle.air After r 1. Cut the film of wrinkle by knife or by careful sanding with an appropriate grade of sand paper 2. Remove the dust and apply the Fibagel by spatula, smoothing and filling as you go. 3. Cure the gel
It may be necessary to use some sellotape to hold the top film in place while the FibaRoll is curing as strong winds can get under the film and strip it before full curing

has taken place. Please be aware that a double layer of FibaRoll will require longer to fully cure.
To achieve these water shed vertical joints, care must be taken to plan the application. It will be necessary to start at the bottom of the tank wall and work upwards. Any seam that does not pass a visual inspection can be sealed with FibaGel UV. On rounded surfaces like the dome tops of tanks the jointing methods are the same although the shapes are obviously different. Care must be taken with curved cut pieces of FibaRoll that the joints are a minimum 50 mm to ensure a strong, sealed joint. Typical complete curing times in good daylight for FibaRoll is 1-3 hours however curing times can vary depending on the light levels, material thickness and should be assessed during the day (see application conditions). If required, seams can be further sealed with an application of FibaGel. The top film should be removed only when the FibaRoll is fully cured. In practice the top film should not be removed for at least 6 hours of daylight after application. FibaRoll and FibaGel products can be over-painted. Once they have fully cured lightly abrade and apply a coating.

An example of a termination on a steel pipe coming through insulation. The first piece of FibaRoll is bonded to the steel (newly painted piping must be lightly abraded first prior to a FibaGel primer application). This is circumferentially wrapped and overlapped onto itself to fully close the seam.
A second pieces / piecess of FibaRoll are then applied onto the first piece.
A third piece is circumfrencially wrapped and bonded onto the steel pipe thus closing the seam giving a very strong termination.
If FibaRoll is required to terminate onto concrete from an insulation system (i.e. the concrete plinths at the base of storage tanks) then the concrete must have a moisture content of a less than 5%, have the correct surface preparation (i.e. needle gun or similar to remove the fines and laitance at the surface) and then a primer coat of FibaGel. Annular ring movement must be accommodated due to tank filling and emptying therefore we recommend that the Fibaroll is bonded well to the insulated tanks wall and to the vertical or sloping face of the tank plinth. The free area of the horizontal surface should allow for any movement and reduce any stress areas.
For terminations where there is expected movement there is a drawing 1) that shows the termination techniques for good access and where access is restricted.

light levels (using clear sellotape/scotch tape) and at suitable time intervals (30 minutes), checked by attempting to scratch the inside surface with a fingernail. When you can no longer scratch the surface of the material it is fully cured. This is your cure time for an overlap joint in an area of the least available UV light in those prevailing light conditions. To provide a safety margin it is recommended to expose the system to double the minimum cure time achieved in this test procedure. Any areas that are in shadow, for example the bottom of a pipe in a trench, often require the use of some reflective material such as aluminum baking foil to reflect the light (natural or otherwise) into these areas. Where light levels are assessed to be high and the material is curing too fast then temporary shading is required. Training requirements To ensure confidence in FibaRoll applications we require that only trained personnel who are on our FibaRoll trained applicator register can apply FibaRoll and FibaGel products. Training plus applicator exams can be arranged by contacting FTi.

atmospheric conditions improve. We recommend that FibaRoll is cured as soon as possible after application to reduce the incidence of whitening. Please refer to our method supplement when using Metal Halide curing lamps. If an area is required to be opened for inspection purposes FibaRoll can be entered by drilling a hole (either power or hand tool) and using snips to create a larger opening. This opening can be re-sealed by abrading at least 50mm around the hole, removing the dust and applying a FibaRoll patch. The same technique can be used to repair damaged areas. Fully cured FibaRoll should have the top film removed as this film can, if left in a UV environment become friable and difficult to peel. Although this is not a technical issue it can look unsightly. As a registered BS EN ISO 9001 : 2000 (cert. No. 21354) company we have full trace-ability and would strongly recommend that on all applications the batch numbers and product codes should be noted down to comply with your quality systems. FibaRoll repair and refurbishment: It is likely that some degradation may occur sometime after 10 years and can be refurbished easily with a further FibaGel coat during normal maintenance.
