Using Bi-Directional Amplifier for Complex Modulation Schemes

RFS knows system operators continuously face the challenge of planning, providing, and improving network coverage. That is why RFS works very closely with customers to gain a complete understanding of their current and future needs. RFS has over 25 years of RF amplifier manufacturing experience, with thousands of our amplifiers installed in the world's harshest environments. Our company believes that to stay ahead, youve got to continuously improve services to your customers. Thats why Celwave has decided to upgrade our existing products capabilities for use with digital modulation formats (CDMA, GSM, TDMA, and iDEN). Tests were performed on the following models:

Tests:
We performed intermodulation and occupied bandwidth tests on the units using the new modulation formats (FCC requirements for Class II Permissive Change part 2.100 I). These tests were done employing multiple carriers modulated with various complex modulation schemes. New operating parameters were then specified for each complex modulation type.

Results:
Digital systems require much higher linearity than analog systems. As anticipated, the Bi-Directional Amplifier can handle digital modulation. This will provide increased capacity for existing networks. Since our BDAs have been designed initially to meet analog system standards, we expected a lower power performance for digital modulation. In addition, the AGC set point has not been changed from its original analog setting. It is important to limit the input power to be well within the stated specifications for each model. These new specs are approximately 3 dB lower than the analog specs (due to linearity constraints.)

Conclusion:
When using RFS Bi-Directional Amplifiers (BDAs) in a digital or mixed system, it is important that they do not exceed the new operating parameters we have specified. This will ensure FCC compliance and help the service provider to provide superior signal quality while controlling cost.
