DESCRIPTION

Scope HFO contains sulphur and other contaminants, and as a consequence erosion and corrosion may take place at an accelerated rate. A coated casing will provide a barrier to these contaminants, thereby extending the life of the casing. The coating material has been rigorously tested to establish data for corrosion resistance, tensile bond strength, and ability to withstand thermal shock, erosion resistance and compressibility. E. IMPLEMENTATION

This bulletin is graded advisory. It is suggested that installations burning HFO be encouraged to install coated casings to their turbochargers. This may either be implemented at the next scheduled engine maintenance interval, or following discovery of severe casing corrosion. F. SUPPLEMENTARY IMPLEMENTATION

Mechanical Cleaning Mechanical cleaning of turbochargers is usually carried out after exhaust deposits have built up to a level such that water washing has become less effective, and during scheduled maintenance intervals. Despite the fact that the coating material is resistant to corrosive and erosive environments, it is unable to withstand harsh mechanical treatment such as hammering and scraping. The following schedule lists the precautions to be aware of when cleaning coated casings: 1. Do not under any circumstances use any mechanical cleaning medium more abrasive than a soft fibre brush, as the PTFE topcoat of the coating is relatively soft. 2. Do not use an alkali cleaning solution (pH greater than 9), as this will attack the aluminium in the Sermetel W base coat. 3. Solvents may be used as long as they do not possess a pH reading of greater than 9. Washing in the correct manner will allow the coating to retain its barrier properties and in so doing prolong the life of the casing.
