Abstract
Analysis is made of “The Secret Grimoire of Turiel”, in comparison with Frederick Hockley's “A
Complete Book of Magic Science” ; in order to determine the authenticity, provenance, and date of the
“Grimoire”.
Background
The Secret Grimoire of Turiel is a manual in which the magician is given instructions on how to contact
Turiel. It claims to have been written in about 1518, and that it may have been copied from something
older. It came to light in 1927 after being sold to Marius Malchus in Spain by a defrocked priest and
was then translated into English from the original Latin.
The usual vendors, beggars, and guides were soon in evidence. One oid man in the garb of a peasant
offered me his services as a guide, which J gladly accepted. The man was bearded, swarthy of
complexion, and very thin. He spoke in broken English and snggested that we visit the Cathedral. This
we did, and as we walked the stranger informed me that the Cathedral was founded in the 16th century
but
only completed in the 19th, He conducted me to a lift inside the Cathedral, and smiled at two most
corpulent priests who were seated at confessional boxes. The priests turned their heads away from the
guide, who entered the lift with me. Soon we were speeding upward to enjoy the most enchanting scene
imaginable. In the sunlight, on each bank of the river, lay the houses of the capital Down below the
people walked, Lilliputians in size.
We stood for a considerable time, and indeed I could have remained much longer drinking in the view,
but the guide suggested that we leave. We did so and visited the bazaars and other plates of interest
including taverns where we enjoyed native cigars and wine.
As we made our way back to the ship my guide produced a little metal crucifix and some papers which
he begged me to buy. He informed me that the papers were the manuscripts of a system of ceremonial
magic, “The Secret Grimoire of Turiel“. These were the original dated 1518. written in Latin, and a
copy written in English, a translation from the original. The original copy was in fragments, almost
worn away, but the copy was intact. I told the guide the original was not worth taking, but I would buy
the cross and the copy. He agreed to this, and thus I became the possessor of the Grimoire. Since 1927
I have rewritten the manuscript owing to the fact that I was on the move so often, and for the sake of
convenience the new writing was entered into a note book of convenient size, and the copy purchased
in Las Palmas I destroyed. I have reason to believe that the present manuscript is the only one in
existence. In. publishing same I feel sure that it will appeal to all students of occultism as an additional
item of interest. It has much to commend it. Though small in volume it is a complete system of
Ceremonial Magic. The former owner admitted that he had made use of the formula contained therein.
For his experiments in the Art he, a former priest, had been defrocked. This he said was the reason why
the two priests in the Cathedral had not acknowledged his smile.
MARIUS MALCHUS.
Westminster, 1954.
This story, alone, is enough to convince most scholars that the Grimoire is a recent hoax, however:
“A Complete Book of Magic Science”, by Frederick Hockley (1808-1885), circa 1850, was discovered
in May 2007, at Weiser Antiquarian Books in Maine. Surprisingly, this small volume seemed to be a
version (or original) of The Grimoire. A cursory look confirmed that, indeed, it was a lengthier version
of the Grimoire. The “Complete Book” states that it too, was translated from a Latin work of 1519.
This is a year later than the Grimoire, but perfectly understandable when it comes to older documents
Analysis
A side-by-side comparison of the two document are presented, below. Red text indicates differences
between the two, green text are notations added by this author. Minor punctuation and spelling errors
may appear, much due to modern error in OCR application. The introductory materials have been
omitted. Over time, I hope to clean this all up, correct any errors and present a final composite version
of these two works.

First, and foremost, it is obvious that “The Secret Grimoire of Turiel” is not a forgery or hoax,
perpetrated by Marius Marchus.
Hockley was a fine enough scholar, that his opinion, that the source of “The Book” was not of recent
fabrication, should have merit.
The English of the two documents is so close as to preclude, in my mind, any wide separation, between
original sources. They are so close, that I would tend to believe that the original “Grimoire” owned by
the priest is quite likely a version of Hockley's “Book”, badly worn, maybe falling apart. The “original”
Latin, owned by the former priest, could easily have been parts separated out of the book and later
thought to be the original Latin source. This is not to deny the possibility that “The Grimoire” and “The
Book” are each derived from separate, virtually identical copies of the original English translation, but
the similarities almost argue against that.
All in all, I give credence to Hockley, and take his source to be an authentic document from some
earlier period of time. The style of English used, however, indicates that it was probably not much more
than 100 years earlier than Hockley's time, unless Hockley, himself, performed major editing and/or
creation of the “original.” To me this seems unlikely as the Latin portions are not that great, and
Hockley was a better scholar than that. The story of an original Latin MS, may just be a fabrication by
the original author, but I would still estimate a date of between 1700 – 1800 for the English version. I
would not exclude an earlier source from which the current English was drawn; whether an earlier
English form or some Latin original, badly corrupted. As to provenance, all that can be said further is
that an English environment is likely for the translation. Any more original document would be
speculative.
Either way, Marius Marchus is vindicated.
