Chapter I Background of the Study

A. Introduction Sports and entertainment activities has a very important role in society. Nowadays, most government proposal for youth is sports competition and entertainment activities to avoid them from vices and drug addictions. Sports and entertainment activities are both done by amateur and professionals and has been part of academic requirements for every schools and universities. Because of the demand of sports and entertainment activities, public and private sports facilities are develop and still developing to satisfy the needs of different sport for the community. Sports complex and indoor arena are the most built structure for sports and entertainment activities. Sports complex has a wider scope than indoor arena in terms of studies and requirements. Sports complex both indoor and outdoor sports are included while indoor arena are focus only for indoor sports. Indoor arena is a large central and enclosed area surrounded by seats for spectators on which different events takes place such as concerts for entertainment (musical and other performances), indoor sports competition (especially basketball, volleyball, table tennis, tennis, badminton, cheering, and many more), seminars, graduation, cultural events, assemblies, and beauty pageant. Here in Philippines, sports are active not only in schools but also in government activities like liga or sportfest, a competition of various games. It is a yearly basketball competition of different baranggays, town and cities during summer break which is appropriate time for students to be active and physically fit thats why, every corner in the Philippines, basketball court are found. The famous activity in Philippines is towns fiesta. During fiesta, a lot of activities was performed for youth, amateur competition, sports competition (basketball ad volleyball mostly) and dance parade are the famous activities done. All of this activity needs a facility to be able to do it.

Small city like Imus, needed a facility like indoor arena. Imus Arena project is the main focus of this study. Along the research study, any architectural design related to the project will be observe and analyze. B. Statement of the Problem The City of Imus has a number of sports and recreational facilities for the physical development of their community. On their 97 barangays, different sports facilities like basketball court, tennis and volleyball courts, cockpits, public playground, and movie houses are distributed. According to 2007 statistical data of summary of recreational and open spaces of Imus City (CLUP- Sport and Recreational sector) shown on table No. 1, the total number of their sports and recreational facilities are 164. According to the record, the facilities that was publicly-owned is 65 (40%) and privately-owned and managed is 99 (60%) as shown on Figure No. 2. Figure No. 1- Summary of Table No. 1, top 4 number of sports facilities and Private Facilities

Figure No. 2- Percentage of Public

The most used court is basketball, as shown in Figure No. 1 which was based on Table No. 1, but most basketball courts are privately owned. The second used court is a combination of volleyball and basketball court, most of it is privately owned. Third is the Billiard hall and last is the tennis court. Through the data, it shows that the 40% (Figure no. 2) of sport facility is the distributed facility given by local government. For 97 barangay, only 65 facilities was distributed and not all facilities was maintained or in a good condition. Since Imus is a progressing and developing city, there is a high probability that it may not cater the capacity of its population in the future for city festivals or sports competition. Their existing courts and not having a cultural events center will be hard for them to create memorable and great events because of lack of facilities for entertainment. C. Objectives

The proposed Imus arena will cater the facilities needed for sports and entertainment activities of Imus City, Caviite. This research will be carefully studied and analyze through acquiring the goal in planning to come-up on the desired outcome of the architectural design of the proposal. These architectural objectives are the following: 1. To be able to determine the right concept of form of the structures that will symbolize the City. 2. To be able to improve and develop the utility area needed for the indoor arena. 3. To determine the spaces needed for space programming. 4. To be able to find the best site for the proposed indoor arena. 5. To be able to determine the materials needed for acoustic purposes and construction method and materials to be used. D. Significance of the Study This research study will be my guide in planning and designing my baby thesis, Proposed Imus Arena that will be suited for Imus and also Cavite. It will be a helpful reference for its every detail will be needed for designing an Arena or related projects. These studies will be my support for collecting data that will be presented through sketches in the final plate. All research will be done, will be restored in this document and will play a big role not only in present but also in the future. E. Scope of Delimination The scope of delimitation refers to the boundary of the research study which depends on the time frame given to conduct it. This will be the basis of what is not included in the study to be able to defend any questions not part of the architectural research. The study will not be studying the financial feasibility of the project. The projects cost and the possible revenue that will be collected is part of financial feasibility.

Chapter III Research Methodology

This chapter explains the systematic process and step-by-step procedure to come up in architectural objectives and design through architectural research for the desired project proposal, Imus Arena. This will be the support to form the structural framework of the studies for indoor arena. In this architectural baby thesis research, different research method will be conducted to achieve the desired data about indoor arenas for Imus. A. Data Gathering Data gathering is the first step to come up for the desired outcome of the proposed Imus arena. It is consist of two method: secondary data (paper method), and primary data (pencil method). The data needed for the baby thesis proposal will be collected through the following process: 1. Review of published and unpublished materials These will be the collection of secondary data about planning and designing an entertainment arena which be located from following sources: a. Libraries Through different school libraries and public libraries, any published materials like books, magazines, newspaper and others sources which will be found in library that is related on proposed arena project will be collected and will be the base for the related studies or the structural framework of the studies. Any article will be a helpful data especially if it is related in construction materials and for space programming of the arena. Though this process, searching in libraries are bit old process, it is still the useful sources for research. b. World Wide Web

World Wide Web (www) is the most used and easy way in finding source in research but not all articles are concrete and fact because of unknown writers. Architectural data will be collected from various online news articles, blogs, online encyclopedia and dictionaries, architectural websites that will be related in proposed project, arena. It is also a useful program for gathering data about the proposed site, Imus, Cavite. 2. Consult a resource person Consult at least one or two persons or architects whose expertise is in the field of planning an arena or related projects like theater or a simple studio area. An interview will be the best way to conduct research either through in person, letter or electronic mail, or online chat or video chat. This data will be a form of collection of primary data of the proposed arena. 3. Government agency visitation For definite data for the proposed site, Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) will be used which is found in Imus City Hall. Interview in government employees especially in planning department is also necessary if some data is not written in CLUP and other related data. Most used data in CLUP are located in sport and recreational sector of Imus and some will be in tourism sector. 4. Tools a. Photo documentation of related project visitation This process is the best way to understand the factors and data needed in planning and designing an arena. The collected data of it most are photo documentation and site analysis will be part or structural framework of the study, under of review of related projects. The following places are the intended sites to be visited and are related to the project: a) SM MOA Arena, Pasay City, b) Smart Araneta Coliseum, Cubao City, c) Bacoor Coliseum, Bacoor City. b. Tabulation and figures

These tools will be the guide for proper presentation and summary of a statistical data given. B. Research Method or Design 1. Historical Method It is critical method for it investigates the experiences, past events and development which will tend to create a theory or a conclusion for the study. It answer the question what was? Any historical data like history of growth of population in Imus, history of events/ activities in Imus and even other projects history will be analyzed if it will affect the present proposal. 2. Descriptive Method It is a method on which it describes the present situation through studying and analyzing the particular phenomena for the present and future needs of the society. In this research, it questions the study what are the needs of society for the improvement of sports and recreational activities? To use this method, we will be having a survey method. c. Survey method Survey will also be a collection of primary data on which certain number of people will be ask through a piece of paper, either a close or open type of survey. People, mostly Imus residence and local government employee especially in Planning and SKI department and Sports Agency, will be asking about Imus development on sports and other activities.

C. Analysis of Gathered Data After gathering data, analyze the data and start to interpret its relation to its designated factor and to other data. It will be a combine research with own

thoughts and conclusion on how to come up in architectural design of the project. a. Identification of Needs Through the analysis of data, gather and identify the needs for the project. Issues and collected data for architectural plan should be provided. It is important to identify the needs starting from the site, construction, architectural materials and planning for space programming. Issues will be the basis on what major facilities are needed for the project to serve the community. b. SWOT analysis Political-Economic-Social-Technology( market analysis will be used to determine the status of the project on the selected site. Since it is a project that will generate revenue, may be higher revenue, PEST market analysis will take a small part on consideration. Its scope and delimitation will not exceed on any computation about building cost or financial feasibility of the project. Strenght-Weakness-OpportunitiesThreats (SWOT) analysis will be more use since the baby-thesis does not have enough time to consider deeper analysis of its financial feasibility. SWOT wil be the major basis of the study. c. Site Selection On site selection, three selected sites will be presented and will be comparing through SWOT analysis to determine the suitable site of the project. The sites required does not base on Transfer Certificate of Title of lot but will based on world-wide-web. Site selection will be based on the following factor: i. Site Criteria Prepared criterion on what was the characteristic of the site compatible for the project which is based on the analysis of related project.

ii. Site Inventory This inventory is an overall physical characteristic of the site. It is identification of the presence of wild life, soil classification, orientation of sun, and others.
