HIP ARTHROSCOPY
TYPE I INFORMATION FOR PHYSIOTHERAPISTS
This is a simple arthroscopy procedure which involves labral trim, clean up, removal of loose bodies and to relieve minimal impingement syndrome.

Immediately post-op (0-1week)


Isometric Quads(Static, SLR and Inner range) Isometric Gluteus Isometric Hamstring AROM ankle ex Gait Re-education-Heel toe, Good pelvic Alignment Hip ROM ex as pain allows Single Knee bends with or without weights. Commence core stability exercises. Mobilise WBAT. May restrict to TWB for 4 days depending on the surgeons discretion. Follow hip exercises on the early hip exercise sheet.

Post-op (week 2)
Gently progress to intermediate exercise sheet as able Stationary Bike Stepper Hip abduction, flexion, extension, rotation. Progress with therabands Bridging ex Single leg stance- rotation of opposite hip.

Post-op (3-6weeks)

Jogging. Swimming, once the wound has healed.

6-10 weeks

Continue ex as above. Patients may commence sporting activities Golf, Rowing, Football, Rugby and Tennis.

HIP ARTHROSCOPY TYPE II

This procedure is done for slightly more severe impingement and labral tear. Repair of labral tear. Repair of ligamentum teres. Chondral damage. Relief of impingment Wt.bearing might be restricted for 6 weeks depending on the extent of chondral damage and intervention. Please check weight bearing status on referal

NO External rotation of the hip until 4 weeks post-op.

Immediate post-op (0-1week)


Isometric Quads(Static, SLR and Inner range) Isometric Gluteus Isometric Hamstring AROM ankle ex. No ER for 4 weeks Follow exercises on the early hip exercise sheet.

Post-op (week 2)
Bridging ex

Post -op (week 3)


Stationary Bike. Hip abduction, flexion& extension can be gently progressed with light theraband. Gentle swimming No Breast stroke for 6 weeks

Post-op (week 4-5)


Aqua jogging Commence active external rotation of the hip without resistance.

Post-op (6-10 weeks)


Commence breast stroke when swimming. Gait re-education-heel toe, good pelvic alignment Progress wt.bearing to FWB Single Knee bends with or without weights Single leg stance-rotation of opposite hip Stepper Breast stroke swimming Some sporting activities may re-commence 10 weeks post-op
