Pipe Straightness Tool

Client Requirement Pipes are never absolutely straight. Bends in pipes can be caused in manufacture, during delivery, welding or during the straightening process after spooling. The importance of any kinks or bends will depend on the end use of the pipe in question. In the area of pipeline construction (spoolbase, welding, drilling risers and drilling) tolerances are critical. Accurate measurement is required in the following cases: Determining if manufactured pipe meets the desired specication Drilling riser support pipes; straightness is crucial to avoid buckling Straightness of double jointed pipes Establishing the straightness of pipes after bending trials or aboard a pipelay vessel

Benets to the client Accurate measurement of straightness 1mm over 12m Fast set up Quick measurement Magnetic clamp Strap alternative Safety attachment 8hr long life battery (rechargeable) Digital read out system

OMS Solution The OMS Pipe Straightness Tool is designed to allow the operator to quickly and accurately determine the straightness of a pipe. Where the specication allows tolerances of 1mm the OMS Straightness Tool provides you with the ability to measure to this level of accuracy. The OMS system uses a laser beam as a straight line in space. By ensuring that this straight line is the same distance away from the pipe at two locations, i.e. at the beginning and end of the pipe, the straightness can be measured at any other point in-between.

Pipe Straightness Tool

The OMS Straightness Tool consists of the following: Laser alignment module consisting of: eye safe laser, magnetic clamp, battery holder, safety strap xing point and two way gimble Retro-reector module consisting of: magnetic clamp, safety strap xing point and retro reector Measurement Target module consisting of: magnetic clamp, safety strap xing point and ruler Measurement Target module consisting of: magnetic clamp, safety strap xing point, moveable target and digital readout Batteries and international battery charger Alternative clamping straps Transportation Case Operation Manual OMS calibration certicate

The retro-reector is used in setting the laser beam as a parallel reference line.

The target graticule is used to assess deviations of the pipe from the reference line.

Case Study A pipeline installation contractor has used the OMS Straightness Tool to set the straightener on a spooling pipelay vessel. Prior to this method it was necessary to pass excess pipe through the straightener, drop it to the deck and then measure the straightness horizontally before adjusting again. With the OMS tool the straightness measurement can be carried out in-situ resulting in faster, easier and more accurate measurement and less waste material on deck.

The design height of the tool parts allows use with coated pipe provided that cutbacks are available to mount the tool parts on the pipe. Pipe coating up to 90mm can be accomodated.

Sagging pipe. The laser spot falls some distance above the zero position. This offset can be read off directly in mm.

To create a parallel reference line the laser can be adjusted horizontally and vertically using the dials mounted on the laser head.
