STANDARD COMPETENCY SKILL AREA 1A Cut PVC casing. Nail PVC casing. 1. Cut to the required length. 1st nail 75mm from both ends of batten wood. Intermediate nail spacing of 450mm. From bridge across water pipes and electrical wiring. Minimum clearance from power supply < 650 volts A.C. - 50mm > 650 volts A.C. - 450mm PVC casing closed properly. 1. Draw sufficient drop wire off the coil for termination of the bearer wire at the ring polehead and connection to the DP box. 2. Remove the bearer wire from this length - Conductor insulation not damaged. 3. Surplus bearer wire cut - Leaving 525 - 675mm of bearer wire. 4. Bend the insulated bearer wire around the groove of the thimble - 75mm from where is parted from the conductors. 5. Make 3 turns around bearer wire - 75mm from thimble. 6. Make another 3 turns around bearer wire - close to thimble 7. Make 2 loose turns around the bearer wire and the conductors. 8. Surplus bearer wire is cut off. 1. 2. 3. 4. In the field, either batten, wood or PVC is used.

Secure the drop wire to the pole with scrap lengths of bearer wire - At 2 points equally spaced from ring polehead to DP box. 3. Correct DP pair is selected - according to instruction 4. Strip insulation- 13mm for both wires 5. Drop wire passes via the bridle ring below DP box slack of 150mm 6. 1 turns around the screws. 7. DP cover replaced. 1. Uncoil the drop wire between the DP pole and the house termination - drop wire not damaged. 2. Pass a loop of drop wire through the thimble on the wall bracket - tension by hand. 3. Minimum sag for drop wire : Resultant sag is consistent with satisfactory ground clearance. Span Minimum sag 0 - 22.5m 450mm 22.5 - 30.0m 600mm 30.0 - 37.5m 750mm 37.5 - 45.0m 900mm 45.0 - 52.5m 1200mm 52.5 - 76.5m 1500mm

Terminating the bearer wire at house termination

1. Draw sufficient drop wire off the coil for termination of the bearer wire at the thimble on the wall bracket and termination at the lightning arrester. 2. Remove the bearer wire from this length - Conductor insulation not damaged. 3. Surplus bearer wire cut Leaving 525 675 mm of bearer wire. 4. Bend the insulated bearer wire around the groove of the thimble 75 mm from where the bearer wire is parted from the conductors. 5. Make 3 turns around the bearer wire 75mm from thimble 6. Make another 3 turns around bearer wire close to thimble 7. Make 2 loose turns around the bearer wire and the conductors. 8. Surplus bearer wire is cut off 1. Strip insulation 13mm for both the wires. 2. Insert the A and B legs into the slots of the two screws in the lightning arrester. 3. Slack of 50mm given 4. Screws tighten 1. Tools well cleaned and placed in tool box.
