Reducing Pollution Recently there has been a high interest in reducing pollution. Pollution is anything that is thrown into the environment that can cause a negative effect on the living creatures that inhabit the place. Those affects can take place with an overload in solid waste, and poison in the air. On a daily basis there is always many people contributing to the pollution on earth. Landfills are overflowing from the solid waste being distributed on a daily. People are littering without any remorse. Our air is being polluted with poisonous toxins released from vehicles. This paper will describe the importance of environmental waste reduction and hopefully influence people to help solve such a huge problem. According to Dan Rodriguez director of Collier Countys Solid Waste Management, Business end up decreasing the size of waste container needed as well as the frequency in which it is picked up (Luberecki). Its a complicated situation to try to influence others in recycling, rather than to force them and tell them whether or not they are meeting the requirements

(Luberecki).By choosing to recycle materials it will decrease the amount of cost for solid waste disposal helping out the environment stay clean by reducing waste (Luberecki). Living in a busy traffic area, many people drive through from outside places. As a result, all the people who dont reside in the area thinks its okay to litter by throwing trash out the cars (Luberecki). Weve seen small business save as much as $300 a year and a large business as much as $3000 a year says Larry Berg an assistant director at Collier Solid Waste Management (Luberecki). The cost of recycling is tremendously cheaper than just throwing out solid waste. Charles Kirby the District 4 councilman for the city of Decatur states, We should send the message, if you dump on the city of Decatur, we will dump on you. In the sense we are going to fine and punish you for doing it (Owens). Decatur has a problem with littering, and the people that commits those acts are not being punished and it needs to change (Owens). The community of Decatur should have an alternative solution to cleaning up the mess. They should assign local police officers in making daily inspections. If trash is found they need to call so that it can get cleaned up (Owens). According to Charles Kirby states, make an example out of them (Owens). In order to reduce the waste production of certain resources at, school districts, and local community a plan has to be implemented (Hayes). Investigate, analyze and collect data on what materials have a high and low rate of recycling and explain the reasons why. Present the gathered information to the school administrators and the community leaders (Hayes). The schools main mission is to educate students. Start off by educating them on how to recycle so it can increase the quality life in the near future (Hayes). According to Priscilla Hayes the Director of energy and sustainability at Country Day Hills School in New Jersey,

Recycling and food waste composting initiatives present special teaching, as well as cost saving, opportunities for school districts. These programs provide a setting for scientific demonstration, and real life data collection, mathematics, word problems and calculations. Studies have shown that students learn math and science and other basic skill areas better in a real life environmental context (Hayes). Survival is an absolute condition defined by its failure, not by any particular characteristics. It is accomplished by the mechanism of adaptation (Krumdieck). The main goal for sustainable transportation engineering is to better control heavy traffic, which has a high increase in air pollution and that is a negative factor in the environment (Krumdieck). The only way engineers can help change the way things are done is by doing it without anyone mandating. Engineers main goal is to identify the risk associated with the current systems in place. To research and create systems that can prevent failure in sustainability through adaptation. Engineers currently working in transitioning projects have reduce material and energy demands (Krumdieck). Susan Krumdieck is a professor of mechanical engineering at the Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand and states, Engineers in all disciplines could begin working on these projects according to the same drivers as safety engineers because it needs doing. Waiting for government leaders to find solutions or for the market to send the right signals would present a high risk of system failure otherwise known as collapse (Krumdieck). Reducing pollution such as solid waste, or air pollution can improve the quality of the environment that we live in. There are many solutions to pollution, but implement or taking

initiative is the biggest task we have. Recycling materials such as plastic, paper, aluminum, and metal can save money, and help reduce the amount of solid waste being dumped into the local landfills. Teaching and implementing programs in schools will help the children learn how to recycle. By recycling this will reduce and improve the quality and the environment in which the children will grow up in. Punishing people who fail to comply with keeping our earth clean can reduce the significant amount of litter being dumped in the streets and improve the appearance of the land people occupy. Making an effort to change the quality of engineering in the transportation systems is a start in changing the way we need to adapt in order to survive longer and healthier.
