DENGUE- An acute, infectious tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world.

Symptoms appear 3- 14 days after the ineffective bite. Dengue is a febrile illness that affects infants, young children and adults. A disease caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes (AEDES AEGYPTY). Also called breakbone fever, dandy fever, dengue fever.

The mosquito rests in doors, in closets and other dark places outside, they rest where it is cool and shaded. The female mosquito lays her eggs in water containers in and around homes, schools, and other areas in town or villages. These eggs become adult in about 10 days. Dengue mosquitos bite during the day time throughout the day. Highest biting intensity is 2 hours after sunrise and before sunset.

Two Forms of Dengue:

1. Dengue Fever is marked by the onset of sudden high fever, severe headache, and pain behind the eyes, muscles and joints. 2. Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever was further classified into four severity grades, with grade III and grade IV defined as dengue shock syndrome DSS. Symptoms of bleeding usually occur after 3-5 days of fever.

Grading the Severity of DHF Grade I Fever accompanied by non-specific constitutional symptoms; the only haemorrhagic manifestation is a positive tourniquet test.

Grade II Spontaneous bleeding in addition to the manifestations of Grade I patients, usually in the form of skin and/or other haemorrhages.

Grade III Circulatory failure manifested by rapid and weak pulse, narrowing of pulse pressure (20 mmHg or less) or hypertension, with the presence of cold clammy skin and restlessness.

Grade IV Profound shock with undetectable blood pressure and pulse.

SIGNS and SYMPTOMS of Dengue Fever: Sudden onset of high fever Severe headache (mostly in the forehead) Pain behind the eyes which worsen with eye movement Nausea and vomiting Rashes Skin haemorrhage

SIGNS and SYMPTOMS of DHF: Severe and continuous pain in abdomen Bleeding from the nose, mouth, and gums or skin bruising Frequent vomiting with or without blood Black stools, like coal tar Pale, cold skin Restlessness or sleepiness

MANAGEMENT: Tourniquet test Monitor Hgb, HCT and Platelet count Increased fluid intake Administered IVF Avoid dark color food Avoid giving Aspirin Monitor blood pressure Protection of people sick with dengue Use mosquito coils and electric vapour mats Use mosquito nets Repellent Wear full sleeve clothes and long dresses to cover the limbs Indoor and environmental prevention such as: Drain water from coolers, tanks, barrels, drums etc. There should be no water in coolers when not in use Discard solid waste and objects where water collects
