NEWS: JAZZ RADIO LISTINGS: JULY & AUGUST 1992

RADIO 2 [88-90.2 FM]. In VOICES (6th Jul 10-10.30pm), Dave Gelly appraises the career of The Boswell Sisters. CHRIS STUART'S PIANO PARLOUR (Tue 7.30-8pm) examines the distinctive jazz styles of Count Basie, Fats Waller and Nat King Cole (14th Jul), and includes performances by Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and Pinetop Smith (21st Jul). GLEN MILLER & THE ARMY/AIR FORCE YEARS (25th Jul 7.30-9.30pm) is a tribute by the BBC Big Band, recorded at an open-air concert on Southend seafront. CLEO LAINE (Mon 10-10.30pm) is a new six-part series starting 3rd Aug. NATALIE COLE IN CONCERT (29th Aug 7.30-9pm) was recorded at Plymouth Pavilion on her recent UK concert tour that paid tribute to her father's work. RADIO 3 [90.2-92.4 FM] has live broadcasts from The Proms, including BIG BAND ROSSINI [Sun 30th Aug 8.15-10.10pm] with music arranged by Mike Westbrook and sung by Kate Westbrook. A new fortnightly jazz programme is soon to be introduced on the station, though details were unavailable at press time. A new six-part series about MIKE WESTBROOK (Tue 4.30-5pm) starts on 4th Aug, presented by Geoffrey Smith. BBC WORLD SERVICE [648 AM & shortwave] starts a new series THE MUSICIAN'S MUSICIAN (Fri morning 1.30-2am) on 7th Jul with soprano Emma Kirkby reflecting upon the skills of Bobby McFerrin. LATIN ROOTS (Mon 11.15-11.30pm & Tue 7.30-8am) is an eight-part series starting 17th Aug by Lucy Duran that explores the area where Latin and African music meet and cross-fertilise. FESTIVAL FM [Edinburgh 100.7 FM] is a temporary station covering the Edinburgh Festival from 9th Aug to 5th Sep, run by Somethin' Else Sound Directions. DJs include Gilles Peterson (Kiss FM), Charlie Gillett (ex-Capital Radio) and the station's organisers Jez Nelson and Chris Philips. The Edinburgh International Jazz Festival will be included in the menu, plus celebrity guests, live sessions and "wild music". Info: 071-613-3211 or 031220-8275. RADIO HARMONY [Coventry 102.6 FM] DJ Jon Johnson writes to remind us that his show CLOSE ENOUGH FOR JAZZ (Fri 11-midnight) includes regular interviews with the likes of Jason Rebello, Chick Corea and Nelson Rangell. His playlists cover everything from Miles Davis to Lonnie Liston Smith, so tune in for more up-to-date details. JAZZ FM [London 102.2 FM] introduces a new Sunday schedule that loses the station's most appropriately titled show Bill Oddie's YES, BUT IS IT JAZZ? The line-up is now: 6am Barry Jones, 10am Peter Young, 1pm Steve Collins, 4pm Campbell Burnap, 6pm Mark Walker, 10pm Alex George, 2am NIGHT TRAIN. The station's owner, Golden Rose, is planning applications for all five new regional radio licences in Central Scotland, Severn Estuary, West Midlands and North East and North West England, advertised later this year by The Radio Authority. MD David Maker says: "As soon as we are satisfied that the turnaround at 'Jazz' is complete, and we see our audience growing, then we will press the button on going for the franchises." be re-advertised next March and is open to bidders offering any radio format, the winner to be announced in October.
