Student Donates Hair in Honor of Ms. Vonthron

By Lisa Yako Grown-ups often underestimate the impact that children can have on our world. Yet, simple acts of love paired with a positive disposition speak volumes. A few years ago, Huron second-grade student, Lauren Schindley, saw a little girl on television that did not have any hair due to her cancer treatments. Lauren knew that she wanted to help children with cancer, and at that moment Lauren committed herself to donating her hair. The process of growing her hair so it was long enough to donate took several years. During this time, Lauren, a student at Shawnee Elementary, witnessed her principal, Ms. Tanny Vonthron, go through periods of having no hair herself due to cancer treatments. Lauren was truly inspired by the tenacity and positive attitude that Ms. Vonthron has maintained during her battle with cancer. When the time finally came for Lauren to donate her hair at the end of May, it was an easy decision for her to decide to make her donation in honor of Ms. Vonthron. Laurens donation of 10 inches of hair was officially made to Locks for Love, a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from no longer a private battle. she explained. Hence, Laurens donation in her honor was deeply moving. Laurens act of kindness has given a stranger the gift of normalcy and the ability to look into the mirror and not be reminded of her mortality or seemingly endless illness caused by treatments that must be tolerated in order to one day be healthy again. The fact that she bestowed this gift in my name is the greatest honor I have been given, and the certificate from the Locks for Love organization holds more meaning than the diplomas that it will soon hang among on my wall. Laurens selfless donation and the support of her family demonstrate yet another example of why Huron is such a special place to live. Laurens mom, Erica, is also extremely proud of her daughters mature decision. I thought it was fantastic because she (Lauren) talks about Ms. Vonthron a lot, and I think she is sad because this was her (Laurens) last year at Shawnee. So, this is a really special thing she could have done in honor of Ms. Vonthron. I was thrilled. stated Erica. After watching Ms. Vonthrons battle with cancer during Laurens past three years at Shawnee, the whole Schindley family has become more informed about cancer. In addition, Erica

added We have learned to be grateful for everything we have, and that you should always try to give back if you can. These are truly value lessons for an eight-year old and for people of any age. Great job, Lauren.

I have been in treatment for cancer for over four years and have lost my hair three separate times. Each time my hair fell out, it was more devastating than the last. Anytime Fitness 5K Co-sponsored by Family Eye Care Centers

The Anytime Fitness (Huron & Sandusky) 5k, cosponsored by Family Eye Care Centers will be held Saturday, July 13 in Huron. Proceeds from the 2013 Anytime Fitness 5K will assist the Abbey Rose Foundation. The Non Profit foundation was started by Huron High School Spanish teacher Sam Kudrin and his wife Suzi after the loss of their first child in April 2011. Sam and Suzi will be at the race to sell Abbey Rose bracelets and take any orders for books to be sent to other families. They also have about 20 Indians tickets remaining to be sold for the Abbey Rose Day at Indians game, Sunday July 14, Progressive Field in Cleveland. Sam will be throwing out the first pitch. Dont miss the fun. Runners and walkers are encouraged to wear a Tshirt representing the loss of a child. Registration begins at 7:00am with the 5K race beginning at 8am. A 1k fun run will follow at approximately 9:00am, with age group awards, the top male and female award and the Mike Soloman Award at 9:30am. Pre-registration cost is $12, race day cost is $15, 1K fun run $8. If you have ever been to a Huron Tiger football game, you will recognize the familiar H-team red and gray flag that leads the players onto the field. What you may not know about that flag, however, is that it currently resides in Afghanistan, providing several members of the US Army a memory of home. This Fourth of July, while many of us were trying to decide if the rain would hold off for a picnic or where to watch fireworks, this flag was raised and held by Captain Jeffrey Sowecke, Commander of Delta Company, 6th Squadron, 8th U.S. Cavalry Regiment and several of his fellow soldiers. EHOVES Electrical Tech program received a very generous donation of tool kits from Wolf Bros. Supply in Sandusky and Greenlee Tools. Electrical Tech instructor, Chuck Oeder, is very impressed by the donation. Thousands of dollars worth of tools were donated to my Electrical Tech program. This is amazing in todays economy to receive donations from businesses to help with students education, said Oeder. Bill Porter from Wolff Bros. Supply in Sandusky Ohio helped start the Klein Tool program back in 1999. Klein has provided a Electricians Tool kit worth over $250 to the top Electrical Tech senior every year. This years recipient was Tony Wampler (Western Reserve HS).Greenlee Tools representatives Blake George and Travis Zook also awarded valuable tool kits to two deserving Electrical Tech students, Wyatt Dye (St. Mary Central Catholic) and Josh Rohrbacher (Perkins HS). Carr Boucher Pete Dix
Feb 12, 1951 - Jul 2, 2013 Carr Boucher Pete Dix, 62, of Huron, was surrounded by family as he died peacefully on Tuesday afternoon, July 2, 2013, in Stein Hospice Care Center. After a long battle with emphysema, Pete can finally breathe easily again. Pete was born on Feb. 12, 1951, in Columbus, to Carr Eugene and Helen (Boucher) Dix. He graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1969 where he was a member of the state championship football team. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Hillsdale College in 1973, where he belonged to Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Most of his working career was in sales to the railroad industry through Buckeye Steel Castings and Transco Railway Products. Petes first love was fishing and his Lake Erie charter business, Dixie Jean Charters, was his favorite job. Huron Lions Club River Fest Parade Tradition Continues

Twenty-two years ago a small group of Huronites came together to produce a new festival in Huron. The Huron River Fest was born. Since its infancy, the Huron Lions Club has been there to help the festival grow. The Huron Lions Club motto is We Serve and we have been doing just that for the Huron community. The tradition continues with The 2013 Huron Lions Club River Fest Parade. The parade kicks off at 11:00 am this Saturday, July 13th. The parade starts at the intersection of Jim Campbell Blvd. and Cleveland Road. It travels east on Cleveland Rd. to Williams St. to Shirley St. then to Center St. and back to Jim Campbell Blvd. The parade includes over 60 entries this year. The Lions Club welcomes more than ten Queens and their courts from various festivals and fairs. The parade will have non profit groups with their floats along with local businesses. The Irish Heritage Pipe Band will return again this year to bring an Irish flair to the parade. Of course, there will be many baseball and softball teams passing out candy to parade watchers. The Huron Lions Club will be providing trophies for best of show in the following categories: float, marching unit (instrumental and non instrumental), vehicle, most unusual entry, best baseball team and best softball team. The grand marshal for the parade is someone who exemplifies the spirit of Huron. The 2013 Huron Lions Club River Fest Parade Grand Marshal is Max Parrell. Max is a Huron High School student who has competed in several Ohio Special Olympics Winter Games. He has earned Olympic medals in the Giant Slalom and the Downhill Competition. We are proud to have Max lead the parade, stated Dave Zimmerman, Lions Club member & parade coordinator. To execute a parade of this size it requires a group effort. More than twenty Huron Lions Club members plan, prepare and organize the parade. The Huron Lions Club receives assistance and support from the Huron Police Department as well as the Huron Street Department.
