T
he United States is rapidly be-
coming the very first "post-in-
dustrial" nation on the globe.
All great economic empires eventu-
ally become fat and lazy and squan-
der the great wealth that their
forefathers have left them, but the
pace at which America is accomplish-
ing this is absolutely amazing. It was
America that was at the forefront of
the industrial revolution. It was
America that showed the world how
to mass produce everything from au-
tomobiles to televisions to airplanes.
It was the great American manufac-
turing base that crushed Germany and
Japan in World War II. But now we
are witnessing the deindustrialization
of America. Tens of thousands of fac-
tories have left the United States in
the past decade alone. Millions upon
millions of manufacturing jobs have
been lost in the same time period. The
United States has become a nation
that consumes everything in sight and
yet produces increasingly little.
Do you know what our biggest ex-
port is today? Waste paper. Yes, trash
is the number one thing that we ship
out to the rest of the world as we vo-
raciously blow our money on what-
ever the rest of the world wants to sell
to us. The United States has become
bloated and spoiled and our economy
is now just a shadow of what it once
was.
Once upon a time America could
literally out produce the rest of the
world combined. Today that is no
longer true, but Americans sure do
consume more
than anyone else
in the world. If the
deindustrializa-
tion of America
continues at this
current pace, what
possible kind of a
future are we
going to be leav-
ing to our chil-
dren? Any great
nation throughout
history has been
great at making
things. So if the
United States continues to allow its
manufacturing base to erode at a stag-
gering pace how in the world, can the
U.S. continue to consider itself to be
a great nation? We have created the
biggest debt bubble in the history of
the world in an effort to maintain a
very high standard of living, but the
current state of affairs is not anywhere
close to sustainable.
Every single month America goes
into more debt and every single
month America gets poorer.
So what happens when the debt
bubble pops?
The deindustrialization of the
United States should be a top concern
for every man, woman and child in
the country. But sadly, most Ameri-
cans do not have any idea what is
going on around them. For people
like that, take this article and print it
out and hand it to them. Perhaps what
they will read below will shock them
badly enough to awaken them from
their slumber.
The following are 19 facts about the
deindustrialization of America that
will blow your mind....
#1 The United States has lost ap-
proximately 42,400 factories since
2001. About 75 percent of those fac-
tories employed over 500 people each
when they were still in operation.
#2 Dell Inc., one of America s
largest manufacturers of computers,
has announced plans to dramatically
expand its operations in China with
an investment of over $100 billion
over the next decade.
#3 Dell has announced that it will
be closing its last large U.S. manufac-
turing facility in Winston-Salem ,
North Carolina in November. Ap-
proximately 900 jobs will be lost.

Well... I hope this has cleared up any mis-
conceptions you may have had about food
and diets.
And remember:
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave
with the intention of arriving safely in an at-
tractive and well-preserved body, but rather
to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand
- chocolate in the other - body thoroughly
used up, totally worn out and screaming
"WOO-HOO, what a ride!!"
AND..... For those of you who watch what
you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and
health. It's a relief to know the truth after all
those conflicting nutritional studies.
1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer
fewer heart attacks than Americans.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer
fewer heart attacks than Americans.
3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and
suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suf-
fer fewer heart attacks than Americans...
5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat
lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer
heart attacks than Americans.
CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you
like. Speaking English is apparently what
kills you.

grocery store and began put-

A
little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived,
so he packed his suitcase with a bag of potato chips and a six-pack of
root beer and started his journey.
When he had gone
about three blocks,
he met an old man.
He was sitting in the
park, just staring at some
pigeons. The boy sat down
next to him and opened his
suitcase. He was about to take
a drink from his root beer when he
noticed that the old man looked hun-
gry, so he offered him some chips. He
gratefully accepted it and smiled at him.
His smile was so pretty that the boy
wanted to see it again, so he offered him
a root beer. Again, he smiled at him. The
boy was delighted! They sat there all af-
ternoon eating and smiling, but they
never said a word..
As twilight approached, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave;
but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to
the old man, and gave him a hug. He gave him his biggest smile ever..
When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later,
his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him,
"What did you do today that made you so happy?"
He replied, "I had lunch with God." But before his mother
could respond, he added, "You know what? He's got the most
beautiful smile I've ever seen!"
Meanwhile, the old man, also radiant with joy, returned to
his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his
face and he asked, "dad, what did you do today that made you
so happy?"
He replied "I ate potato chips in the park with God." However,
before his son responded, he added, "You know, he's much younger
than I expected."
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a lis-
tening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential
to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime! Embrace
all equally!

ore than 100 excited people,
including the Consul Gen-
eral of the Slovak Republic, re-
cently enjoyed the re-dedication of
Gibbs Butterfly Park with the un-
veiling of eight artistic tiles show-
ing the development of a new
Monarch Butterfly.
In 2007, the area west of Mead-
owlark Golf Course had 179 dead
eucalyptus trees, which caught the
attention of neighbor Leslie
Gilson. She approached the City of
Huntington Beach to see
if the land could be
restored.
Working with
the city, Leslie
spearheaded
an effort that
i n v o l v e d
many vol-
unteers, in-
c l u d i n g
Jean Nagy
of the HB
Tree Society,
the citys Park,
Tree and Land-
scape group,
neighbors, Boy
Scouts, school children
and others.
The beautification project had
the trees removed, new eucalyptus
planted and a tile mosaic explain-
ing how Monarchs migrate there
between November and March.
Many of the butterflies, who are
escaping freezing temperatures in
Colorado, Nevada, Utah, New
Mexico and Arizona, stop at Gibbs
Park before heading south. Other
local Monarchs are in the park
much of the year, thanks to the
amazing effort, which included an
Eagle Scout project that put spe-
cially placed trees on the golf
course for butterfly wind protec-
tion in the park.
Real leaders are ordinary peo-
ple with extraordinary determina-
tion, said Jean Nagy, President of
the non-profit HB Tree Society. It
was a wonderful private-public
partnership that saved the park. I
want to thank Leslie and everyone
who has done so much to help
make it flourish.
Im so impressed that so many
people took such interest in restor-
ing this place so people can come
here today and relax, reflect,
recharge and reconnect with na-
ture, said park namesake, HBs
first woman mayor, Norma Bran-
del Gibbs.
The exciting new butterfly tiles
created by artist Lubica Selecka of
Capistrano Beach are sensational
and even brought Slovak Republic
Consul General Daniel
Orszag to the cere-
mony, along with
a camera crew
from his
country.
Were so
very proud
of Slovak
Artist Lu-
bica Se-
lecka and
her incredible
tiles telling the but-
terfly story, Orszag
said. Even children can
understand the process because of
the beautiful art.

mer HB Mayor Ralph Bauer, HB
City Councilperson Matthew
Harper, Shipley Nature Center
Vice President Kay Goddard, HB
Human Relations Task Force Vice
Chair Don Garrick, former chair-
persons of the HB Planning Com-
mission Barbara Delgleize and
Tom Livengood, Steve Bickel of
the HB Chamber of Commerce,
plus many others.
The park at 16641 Graham
Street in Huntington Beach and
has a donation station where peo-
ple can deposit coins in a meter.

ruce Watson of the "daily"
shares research he did some tme
ago about where to hide...if you
need to..."former CIA employee and
NSA contractor Edward Snowden is
currently hiding out in Hong Kong.
The ever-expanding National Secu-
rity Agency PRISM scandal has raised
a host of philosophical questions about
government, freedom and privacy. But
one question has been on many people's
minds that has less to do with big ideas
and more to do with practical ones:
How did self-confessed leaker/whistle-
blower Edward Snowden think he was
going to escape prosecution by Uncle
Sam after he revealed details of the se-
cret government surveillance program?
The answer, apparently, was by flee-
ing to a country with no extradition
treaty with the United States: The for-
mer CIA employee and NSA contractor
is currently hiding out in Hong Kong.
But the ex-intelligence man would have
been smart to do a little more research
before going on the lam: Hong Kong
may not be quite the sanctuary he'd
hoped for.
In some ways, Hong Kong is a great
place to hide out. While technically, it
has an extradition agreement with the
U.S., the treaty was signed in 1996, a
year before Great Britain transferred
control of Hong Kong to China. Since
the U.S. doesn't have an extradition
agreement with China, it's possible that
Snowden may be able to stay there.
Certainly, it's a better bet than his orig-
inal destination, Iceland, a country that
has an unambiguous extradition pact
with the U.S.
In the grand scheme of things, how-
ever, Snowden would have been better
served heading to a country with a
more clear-cut non-extradition policy.
Unfortunately, most countries that re-
fuse to cooperate with the U.S. govern-
ment are Communist dictatorships,
theocracies, failed states, or are other-
wise less than ideal. But there are a few
hidden gems among them.

Croatia: For the Outdoorsman
With a per-capita GDP of over
$17,000, Croatia occupies that sweet
spot between places that are too poor to
be safe and too expensive to be enjoy-
able. Your dollars will go a long way
here, and with miles of beaches, remote
castles, extensive caves and uninhab-
ited islands, the formerly war-torn re-
public has endless options for your next
home. While a little lacking in nightlife,
Croatia's extensive diving, caving and
hiking opportunities make it ideal for
outdoorsmen, and its stable government
and parliamentary republic promise
that your property -- and life -- should
be well protected by the rule of law.
Kazakhstan: For the 'Star Trek'
Enthusiast
A Trekker with a pocketful of dough
could hardly do better than Kazakhstan.
While it has a variety of terrain, the
country is particularly famous for the
steppes, a windblown grassland where
the descendants of the Khans drink fer-
mented mare's milk and practice Khyz
Kuu, a traditional sport that involves
chasing down maidens while on horse-
back. As for cities, the capital, Astana,
halves the distance between Mongol
and Klingon culture, with breathtaking
buildings that seem to have jumped off
the cover of a Ray Bradbury novel.
Dubai: For the International Play-
boy
Widely regarded as the Las Vegas of
the Persian Gulf, Dubai's gorgeous
buildings, vibrant nightlife and collec-
tion of private islands make it the per-
fect escape for the rich man with
questionable morals and a healthy dis-
dain for hoi polloi. And, if you're look-
ing for something a little more sedate,
lesser-known Abu Dhabi is just a short
ride away. Whichever way you go, the
United Arab Emirates is a good deal
right now -- property values tumbled
during the recession but are rising
again, and the country's extensive infra-
structure and commercial development
guarantee you easy access to most of
the pleasures of home.
Western Sahara: For the Would-
Be Bond Villain
Most experts view Western Sahara as
the world's longest-running failed na-
tion, but we'd prefer to think of it as the
world's most functional anarchy. Mo-
rocco is ostensibly in charge of the
place, but the truth is that Western Sa-
hara basically occupies 103,000 square
miles of empty, unpoliced space be-
tween Morocco, Mauritania and Alge-
ria. Only 600 miles (as the crow flies)
from Europe, it's a convenient staging
ground for any dastardly plans you
might want to cultivate. Infrastructure
is rare to nonexistent, but a few billion
dollars should easily fix that, and the
lack of state-level oversight means that
you won't have to deal with zoning is-
sues when building your secret hideout.
Bhutan: For the Spiritual Hermit
Bhutan hasn't made much of a blip
on the international tourism radar, but
the Asian "constitutional democratic
monarchy," may be the perfect choice
for the stressed-out criminal looking to
get away from it all. Rejecting standard
measures of success like GDP and tax
revenue, Bhutan has chosen to focus its
efforts on improving "Gross National
Happiness." Among other things, this
means tourism development is heavily
restricted, so your sense of internal
well-being is less likely to be disturbed
by the sight of high-rise hotels or the
buzz of snowmobiles!"

The folks who are getting
the free stuff don't like the
folks who are paying for
the free stuff, because
the folks who are pay-
ing for the free stuff
can no longer af-
ford to pay for
both the free stuff
and their own
stuff.
And the folks
who are paying for
the free stuff want
the free stuff to
stop.
And the folks who
are getting the free
stuff want even more
free stuff on top of the
free stuff they are already
getting!
Now... the people who are forc-
ing the people who pay
for the free stuff have told the people
who are RECEIVING the free stuff
that the people who are PAYING for
the free stuff are being mean, preju-
diced, and racist.
So... the people who are GETTING
the free stuff have been convinced they
need to hate the people who are paying
for the
free stuff
by the people who are forcing some
people to pay for their free stuff and
giving them the free stuff in the first
place.
We have let the free stuff giving go
on for so long that there are now more
people getting free stuff than paying
for the free stuff.
Now understand this. All great
democracies have committed fi-
nancial suicide somewhere
between 200 and 250
years after being
founded.
The reason?
The voters figured
out they could vote
themselves money
from the treasury
by electing people
who promised to
give them money
from the treasury
in exchange for
electing them.
The United States
officially became a
Republic in 1776, 236
years ago. The number
of people now getting free
stuff outnumbers the people
paying for the free stuff.
Failure to change that perhaps
spells the end of our way of life as
we know it.
Change is a matter of choice.

o disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United
States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any
person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and or-
ganization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of
honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down,
except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme dan-
ger to life or property.
(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as
the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but
always aloft and free.
(d) The flag should never
be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should
never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always
allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always
arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the
red below, should be used for covering a speakers desk, drap-
ing the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uni-

bers of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living
country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore,
the lapel flag pin being a replica should be worn on the left
lapel near the heart.
(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer
a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified
way, preferably by burning.

"I
am thrilled to be joining the Huntington
Beach Marketing and Visitors Bureau as
their new president and
CEO, said Miller. Its an
honor to have the opportunity
to lead this highly respected
team in marketing Hunting-
ton Beach as the quintessen-
tial Southern California
beach experience."
Miller most recently served
as president and CEO of
Tampa Bay & Company
where he successfully initi-
ated a comprehensive brand-
ing process and worked
closely with the sales and
marketing departments to at-
tract more visitors. Prior to this, Miller spent 12
years as executive director of the Asheville Con-
vention & Visitors Bureau of the Asheville Area
Chamber of Commerce, where the organization
earned 'CVB of the Year' from the
Southeast Tourism Society in 2002 and
2006. He also worked for the Atlanta
Convention & Visitors Bureau for 6
years, first as its 1996 Summer Olympic
Games Marketing Manager, and then as
the organizations first Director of Inter-
national Marketing.
Miller is expected to begin his term at
the end of the summer season, following
the retirement of Steve Bone, who will
stay involved with the organization as
an advisor until September 2014.
"The entire board celebrates Steve's
accomplishments and wish him well in
retirement," said Brett Barnes, chairman
of the HBMVB Board of Directors. "We truly ap-
preciate his dedication to Huntington Beach and
recognize his various achievements in creating
such a successful Bureau. We are excited to have
Kelly Miller inherit such a healthy organization,
and look forward to his leadership and depth of
experience."
The founding chairman and current president
& CEO of the Visitors Bureau, Bone has over 27
years of experience in the Huntington Beach hos-
pitality industry, including the development of the
Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel and
Hyatt Regency Resort & Spa. During his 5 years
with the Bureau, Bone guided the staff to form
both a Film and Sports Commission, published
the lauded Steps Toward a Sustainable Hunting-
ton Beach and the first-ever comprehensive Hunt-
ington Beach Dining Guide, expanded the
Bureaus international marketing program across
the globe, established a successful group meet-
ings sales program and team, and created a strong
social media presence for the destination.

debut of the Van Doren Invita-
tional skate competition where Steve

will be competing for $100,000 in
Huntington Beachs first ever on-sand
cement skate bowl.
Premiering as host of this summers
Vans US Open of Surfing, Vans an-
nounces the debut of the Van Doren In-
vitational, a brand new invite-only
bowl riding competition featuring the
most diverse and talented crew of Pro
and Amateur bowl riders ever assem-
bled together in one place. Forty of the
worlds best skateboarders, including
Vans own bowl-riding phenom Pedro
Barros, will battle it out on the sand in
Huntington Beach on July 27 & 28 for
their share of over $100,000 in prize
money and top honors on the worlds
largest stage for action sports.
The Van Doren Invitational will fea-
ture an organized jam format showcas-
ing the best of the best and the best of
the next including skateboarding leg-
ends like Steve Caballero and Christian
Hosoi plus past Open champs Ben
Raybourn and Raven Tershy, as well as
up-and-comers Colin Provost and
Greyson Fletcher. Fueled by the talent
of top Vans Pro riders like Pedro Bar-
ros, Tony Trujillo and Curren Caples,
competition is slated to hit an all-time
high.
Befitting Vans authentic skate her-
itage, the inaugural Van Doren Invita-
tional takes skateboarding at the Open
to new levels by introducing Cardiel
Cash for the gnarliest tricks of the
weekend, as judged by Vans legend,
John Cardiel. In the first-ever all ce-
ment bowl on the sand in Huntington
Beach built by California Skateparks,
the Vans Pro Bowl was inspired by and
designed from the original bowl riders
mecca, the legendary Skatepark du
Prado bowl on the beach in Marseilles,
France. Vans is also pleased to intro-
duce the Van Doren Shop vs. Shop
team battle and, as if that werent
enough, Vans is deeply honored to
bring back womens skateboarding and
BMX to the weeklong celebration of
the worlds top action sports

mericans cel-
ebrated Inde-
pendence Day last
week with a myr-
iad of festivities including parades,
barbeques, fireworks and sporting
events intertwined with patriotism
and salutes to heroes. But ESPN
columnist Howard Bryant lamented
the merger of sports and patriotism,
railing against military flyovers,
the pre-game inclusion of the armed
forces, and the addition of God
Bless America to The Star-Span-
gled Banner" at our sporting
events.
Bryant claims that the confluence
of sports and patriotism which in
his view equates with politics - is a
recent phenomenon, one that began
after 9/11. History suggests other-
wise. Military flyovers date back to
at least 1955 when beach races were
held in Daytona. Every president
since William Howard Taft in 1910
has thrown at least one ceremonial
first pitch for Opening Day, an All
Star Game or a World Series Game.
As a sign of patriotism, MLB Com-
missioner Kenesaw Mountain Lan-
dis volunteered to suspend MLB
games during World War II, but
President Franklin Roosevelt declined the offer, in-
sisting that it would be best for the country to keep
baseball going.
Bryant laments the elevation of servicemen and
women, along with police and fire fighters, to hero
status at our na-
tions sporting
events, prefer-
ring instead to
limit hero wor-
shiping to the
participating ath-
letes. Hes
wrong on both
counts. Nothing
an athlete does
on the playing
field can be con-
sidered heroic
when compared
to what military
personnel, police
and fire fighters
do on a daily
basis.
Bryant accuses
his hometown
Boston sports
teams, particu-
larly the Bruins
and Red Sox, of
merging sports
and politics by
emphasizing patriotism immediately after the Boston
Marathon bombings. Yet he criticizes the teams for
failing to acknowledge what was occurring just out-
side the stadium wallsduring the city's busing
crises in the 1970s and 1980s. Furthermore, Bryant
says, If the permanent inclusion of the military into
sporting events is at best perilous, the addition of the
police as heroes is even worse. The role of police, es-
pecially in minority communities, is hardly univer-
sally agreed upon. Bryant seems to be saying that
he welcomes the mixture of sports and politics, as
long as he agrees with the politics.
Patriotism isnt about politics. And you dont have
to believe the militarys expenditure of a trillion dollars
and the loss of thousands of lives in the wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan are justified to respect and appreciate
the sacrifices of the men and women in uniform.
Bryant ends his rant against patriotism by saying,
[I]t should be remembered that the greatest freedom
-- fought and died for by so many of the young men
and women trotted out to throw out the first pitch --
is dissent. On that point, Bryant and I are in com-
plete agreement. Thats why Ill take my ballgame
with a dose of patriotism anytime.

common need to market some-
thing to someone.
This is a post by Sara Nash;
Sara earned her degree in Public
Relations from Penn State Uni-
versity. From there, she worked
a PR agency in Boston before
joining the PR and Social Media
team at Vistaprint.
She says:..."There are a num-
ber of ways beyond email and
direct mail to market your busi-
ness. Some of the most effective
methods can happen without
people even realizing it! Try
some of these less-obvious ways
to spread the word about your
business.
1. Whether you are out on
the town or attending a net-
working event, simply talk-
ing to others can be a great
way to market your busi-
ness. Inevitably your com-
pany will come up in
conversation, and it will be a
nice way to show your pas-
sion while being able to an-
swer any questions.
2. Promotional products are
functional, useful products
that can double as tools for
getting your business seen. If
your logo is on your cell-
phone case or tote bag, for
instance, maybe someone
will be intrigued enough to
ask about it.
3. If people read about you
in their local paper, they may
not realize it was intentional
(and maybe it wasnt!). Ob-
viously it would be great for
the media to write about you
without prompting it, but it
cant hurt to pitch your story
to local media to help share
with the public.
4. Whether it is an event, a
team, an award, etc., spon-
sorships can accomplish a
few things. You will likely
be able to get your logo on a
t-shirt, in the program, and
more, but you will also be
helping out a great cause!

azz Shaw tells a tael of education gone
wild..."We first brought you coverage of
this story back in April, and as shocking as
it was, Id assumed wed pretty much heard the
end of it. In case you missed it, heres the short
recap:
When 8th grade Jared Marcum got dressed
for school on Thursday he says he had no
idea that his pro-Second Amendment shirt
would initiate what he calls a fight over his
First Amendment rights.
It was the image of a gun printed on Jareds
t-shirt that sparked a dispute between a Logan
Middle School teacher and Jared, that ended
with Jared suspended, arrested and facing
two charges, obstruction and disturbing the
education process, on his otherwise spotless
record.
By the end of the story, Jared was back in
school and his parents were working with local
authorities to get this incredibly stupid exercise
in oppression off of his record. That
should have been the end of it,
but apparently the local
powers that be are plan-
ning to take this situa-
tion to its illogical
extreme.

and arrested
after refusing to
change his NRA shirt.
Today, 14-year-old Jared
Marcum appeared before a
judge and was officially
charged with obstructing an
officer.
A $500 fine and up to a
year in jail, thats the
penalty that Jared could face, now that a
judge has allowed the prosecution to move
forward with its obstructing an officer charge
against him.
Me, Im more of a fighter and so is Jared and
eventually were going to get through this,
Jareds father Allen Lardieri said. I dont
think it should have ever gotten this far.
Jareds dad is being a lot more calm and rea-
sonable about this than I think I could manage,
but thats probably to the boys benefit. At this
point, the defense is still treating it as a mis-
interpretation of school policy, and not some
sort of civil rights violation. But if it goes much
further, its not hard to imagine them bringing
that aspect of it up in court. And if they do, the
state is going to have a hard time sending Jared
up the river. Our resident legal analyst, Doug
Mataconis of Outside the Beltway, has already
done the digging and found that the Supreme
Court came down on Jareds side some time
ago.
In Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Com-
munity School District 393 U.S. 501 (1969),
the Court deal with the case of a group of
students who were disciplined for taking
part in a protest related to the Vietnam
War by wearing black armbands to
school. In its decision, the Court held
that the students right to express their
political beliefs as protected by the First
Amendment outweighed any argument
the school could make that its actions
were necessary to keep discipline and
order in the school:
The school officials banned and sought to
punish petitioners for a silent, passive expres-
sion of opinion, unaccompanied by any dis-
order or disturbance on the part of
petitioners. There is here no evi-
dence whatever of petition-
ers interference, actual or
nascent, with the
schools work or of
collision with the
rights of other
students to be
secure and to
be let alone. Ac-
cordingly, this
case does not con-
cern speech or action that
intrudes upon the work of
the schools or the rights of
other students.

the link. In the meantime, I suppose well
have to deal with yet another side show as this
all drags out. You might think that in this en-
lightened age of free speech, something like
this would never come up, but apparently
youd be wrong. I can understand the officials
at one relatively small middle school flying
off the beam for a bit and blundering into this
sort of error, but once the public spotlight was
on the case, one would hope that the legal
system would notice and shut it down. But
now theyre setting themselves up for public
embarrassment on a national level. And for
the cherry on top, this is all happening on Joe
Manchins home turf, just as hes facing an-
other battle in the public opinion polls over
his gun control mistakes.

scheduling purposes, with re-
gard to the Muslim commu-
nity, The Holy Month of Ramadan is
anticipated this year to begin Tues-
day, July 9th, with the 1st of the
three-day Eid (Feast) Celebration to
begin August 8th. (The dates can
vary a day or two depending upon
the method of calculation followed
by the community.)
As most of you may already know,
this is a time when Muslims fast, in-
crease their worship and prayers, and
give to the needy. You may also be
interested to know that:
Ramadan is the ninth month of
the Islamic calendar, lasting 29 to
30 days. This is the Islamic year
1434
Ramadan is the month in which
the first verses of the Qur'an were
revealed to the prophet Muham-
mad.
The month is dedicated to fasting
where participating Muslims re-
frain from eating or drinking, from
just before sunrise until sunset, to
teach them about spirituality, pa-
tience, discipline, compassion for
others and humility.
Compared to the solar calendar,
the dates of Ramadan vary depend-
ing on the calculation of or actual
sighting of the moon.
The beginning of Ramadan
moves back approximately eleven
days every year which means that
a person will have fasted every day
of the calendar year after about 34
years.
Many Mosques have a special
night during Ramadan dedicated to
breaking their fast with the inter-
faith community.
Common greetings to your Mus-
lim friends and neighbors is Happy
or blessed Ramadan, and on Eid
days, Happy or blessed Eid.

an Fastenberg (Aol jobs) did the research and here is what he has to say..."For
years agriculture and manufacturing have been stalling while service sectors
have been adding jobs. And that shift will be "cemented" by 2020, according
to Nicole Smith, a senior economist at the Georgetown University Center on Education
and the Workforce. Smith is a co-author of a new study that identifies the fastest-grow-
ing industries and it projects that the top five will be service industries, such as health
care and hospitality.
Using state and national data, the report by Smith, Anthony Carnevale, the center's
director, and Jeff Strohl, the center's research director, projects that a total of 55 million
new jobs will be created from 2010 to 2020. Twenty-four million of the jobs are ex-
pected to be newly created positions. The rest are expected to open as baby boomers
retire.
"If the U.S. Congress can deal with budgetary challenges, we are on schedule for re-
covery," Carnevale said in a news release accompanying the report. The catch, however,
is that there may not be enough qualified workers to fill the openings. According to the
Georgetown study, 5 million of the total job vacancies will remain open throughout the
decade as Americans fail to receive the proper educational and technical training.

hunder and lightning storms
happen all the time. But did
you know that lightning
strikes and lightning fires occur
most often in the summer? Know
what to do to keep you and your
family safe when it does strike!
Outdoor Safety
If you can hear thunder, you are
within striking distance of lightning.
Look for shelter inside a home, large
building, or a hard-topped vehicle
right away. Do not go under tall trees
for shelter. There is no place outside
that is safe during a thunderstorm.
Wait at least 30 minutes after the last
thunder before leaving your shelter.
Stay away from windows and
doors.
If you are in or on open water, go
to land and seek shelter immediately.
If you feel your hair stand on end,
that means lightning is about to
strike. Squat low to the ground on
the balls of your feet; place your
hands over your ears and your
head between your knees. Make
yourself the smallest target pos-
sible and minimize your contact
with the ground. Do not lie flat on
the ground. This is a last resort when
a building or hard-topped vehicle is
not available.
If a person is struck by lightning,
call 9-1-1 and get medical care imme-
diately. Lightning strike victims carry
no electrical charge; attend to them
immediately. Check their breathing,
heartbeat, and pulse. CPR may be
needed.

Diego lifeguards are warning ocean
goers to be on the alert for stingrays
in the water. Theres been an in-
crease this season of the bottom-
feeders who swim close to shore.
And theres been an increase in at-
tacks at local and regional
beaches, according to officials.
For example, Huntington Beach
last year witnessed an all-time
record number of stingray injuries,
with more than 400 seen by No-
vember.
Instructions of how to avoid
stingrays was given by Lifeguard
Supervisor Kevin Pearsall, who de-
scribed that its important to shuffle
your feet when entering the water.
He said:
As you enter the water, onto the
sand, you kind of shuffle, you keep
the sand moving, the area moving
as they hear you coming and see
you coming. Theyre going to flee.
They do not want contact with us
in anyway.
If you are stung by a stingray
it can be very painful and bleed.
But there is no need to rush to the
ER or be seen by a medical doctor.
Simply immerse the affected
area into a pail of very hot water or
a bathtub with hot water. After
about an
hour, the
s t i n g
dissolves
and the
pain dis-
appears.
However,
a barb left
in the skin
can get in-
fected.
So, for
instance,
if you are
stung on
the foot or let a likely area while
wadding in shallow water place
the foot into a pail of water that is
as hot as you can stand. Keep it
there immersed for an hour.
When I worked at the Beach
Area Community Clinic in the
1980s in Mission Beach, we would
have numerous patients come in
during the summer with stings.
And what we would we do is sim-
ply what I just recommended; we
would have the patient sit with their
foot in the pail of very hot water for
about an hour."

cats prey on lots of
birds and other "neighbor-
hood" wildlife, but isn't it cruel to
force felines to live indoors only? And isnt human en-
croachment the real issue for bird populations, not a few

hile it is true that habitat loss as a result of human
encroachment is a primary threat to birds and
wildlife of all kinds, outdoor cats are no doubt exacer-
bating the loss of biodiversity as their numbers swell and
they carry on their instinctual business of hunting.
The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institutes
Peter Marra estimates that outdoor cats in the United
States, counting both pets and feral animals, kill up to
3.7 billion birds each yearalong with up to 20 billion
other small mammals. Researchers estimate that roughly
114 million cats live in the contiguous U.S., 84 million
of them pets and the rest feraland that as many as 70
percent of pet cats spend some time roaming outside and
hunting.
Cats are a nonnative species, reminds Marra, adding
that they often target native species and can transform
places that would normally harbor many young birds
into sinks that drain birds from neighboring popula-
tions. As a result of this ongoing predation, many en-
vironmentalists and animal lovers think cats should stay
inside. The big message is responsible pet ownership,
Marra says. He acknowledges that feral cats may be the
bigger problem, but pet cats still catch as many as two
billion wild an-
imals a year.
The non-
profit American
Humane Asso-
ciation reports
that there are
several ways to
keep indoor cats happy even though they are restricted
from chasing and hunting wildlife. Getting Fluffy a com-
panion (another cat or even a dog) is a good way to provide
an outlet for play. Likewise, interactive toys, scratching
posts, cat perches and other amenitiescheck with any
well-stocked local pet storecan make the indoor environ-
ment a stimulating yet safe one for housebound cats and
should serve to prevent stir-crazy behavior.
Meanwhile, another non-profit, the American Bird Con-
servancy (ABC), adds another reason why cat owners
might want to think about restricting their pets territory to
inside: Research shows that indoor cats live significantly
longer lives than their free-roaming counterparts. Life for
outdoor cats is risky, reports the group. They can get hit
by cars; attacked by dogs, other cats, coyotes or wildlife;
contract fatal diseases, such as rabies, feline distemper, or
feline immunodeficiency virus; get lost, stolen, or poi-
soned; or suffer during severe weather conditions.
But the fact that feral cat populations have gotten so large
in recent years makes the problem that much more vexing.
Researchers concede that efforts to catch and either neuter
or euthanize feral cats have proven ineffective given their
booming populations, leaving cat owners wondering
whether jeopardizing Fluffy's mental health for the sake of
saving a few birds is really even worthwhile.

While habitat loss as a result of human encroachment is
a primary threat to birds and wildlife of all kinds, outdoor
cats, counting both pets and feral animals, no doubt ex-
acerbate the problem by killing up to 3.7 billion birds each
year -- along with up to 20 billion other small mammals.

oday, more than 12,000 U.S. wine shops
have a presence on the web. But just 14
states allow consumers to order wine from
out-of-state retailers.
Eleven states prohibit residents from ordering
wine from out-of-state wineries. Four states ban
the sale of wine on Sundays. The overwhelming
majority of Americans support supermarket wine sales,
but 15 states force consumers to purchase their wine in a
dedicated liquor store. In another 15 states, it's illegal to
bring your own bottle of wine
into a restaurant -- even if the
restaurant owner is okay with it.
Like virtually all America's
liquor laws, these restrictions
trace their origins to Prohibition.
Today, these laws simply harm
consumers and enrich special in-
terests.
Fortunately, there's a new or-
ganization that's fighting these
anti-consumer wine laws. Called
the American Wine Consumer
Coalition (www.WineCon-
sumers.org), the group deserves
every wine lover's support.
When Prohibition was re-
pealed 80 years ago, states were
given the authority to regulate
the "transportation or importa-
tion" of liquor within their bor-
ders. At the insistence of a
motley crew of interest groups, states imposed an assort-
ment of rules.
A top priority was weakening producers, because be-
fore prohibition, teetotalers and law enforcement alike
believed they wielded too much power. Temperance ad-
vocates blamed producers for the ills of drunkenness; po-
lice officers associated producers with organized crime.
Lawmakers answered this call in one of two ways.
They either took control of the sale and/or distribution of
alcohol or created a "wholesaler tier" to sit between pro-
ducers and retailers.
Today, just Pennsylvania and Utah maintain total con-
trol on alcohol sales. In
those two states, gov-
ernment officials decide
which liquor brands are
sold, how much is
charged, and where
those products can be
purchased.
Virtually every other
state depends on a
wholesale tier through
which most alcohol
must pass. This is essen-
tially a state-mandated
middleman.
As one might guess,
wholesaling is big busi-
ness. Together, the na-
tion's two largest
wholesalers had rev-
enues of more than $14
billion last year. So it's
no surprise that the wholesaling industry fights hard
against efforts to undermine its presence.
Consider direct-to-consumer wine sales.
About 20 years ago, Americans started developing a
taste for high-end wines, typically from California. Many
consumers started ordering directly from producers.
Such transactions cut out wholesalers, so they spear-
headed a campaign to prohibit winery-to-consumer ship-
ping. Consumers re-
sponded with lawsuits,
and in 2005, the Supreme
Court ruled that state law-
makers could only pro-
hibit direct shipping from
out-of-state wineries if
they blocked wineries in
their states from ship-
ping out of state. The 11
states that still prohibit direct-to-consumer wine sales
hardly produce any wine of their own.
The wholesaling industry has also fought to block on-
line retailer-to-consumer wine sales -- and remains suc-
cessful in 36 states. So if you live in Pennsylvania and
desperately want a bottle of wine that can only be found
at a store in Washington, D.C., you're out of luck.
Wine retailers obstruct supermarket wine sales. After
all, if consumers could pick up a bottle of Merlot while
shopping for dinner, they might skip the trip to the liquor
store. And while bans on Sunday sales were originally
promoted to keep the Sabbath holy, they're now pushed
by retailers who hate the thought of increased competi-
tion.
Laws against bringing your own bottle of wine into a
restaurant are pushed by the restaurant lobby. The reason?
Restaurants profit handsomely from wine sales, typically
tripling the retail price. Plus, it's easy to imagine an up-
start restaurant gaining traction by encouraging patrons
to bring in their own booze -- and established restaurants
don't enjoy competition.
America's liquor laws are designed to protect and serve
special interests -- not consumers. That's why the time
has come for the American Wine Consumer Coalition.

10 Historic Cars: Where Are They Now?

"I
f these vehicles could talk, theyd tell us about famous
celebrities, world leaders and nefarious criminals. These
cars were present for moments of love, tragedy and bril-
liance. They captured whole nations imaginations and
helped change the world, for good and bad. But once their
fleeting moment in history ended, what happened to them?
In a shot heard around the world, Archduke Ferdinand was
assassinated on June 28, 1914, by Serbian separatists. Since
he was next in line for the Austria-Hungarian throne, this re-
ally annoyed Austria, who declared war on Serbia and its al-
lies, launching the start of World War I.
The 1911 Grf & Stift Double Phaeton
was sent straight to Vienna's Heeres-
geschichtliches Museum, where the car
still sits.
When Bonnie Parker met Clyde Bar-
row it was, by all accounts, love at first
sight. The love resulted in three years of
haphazard robbery, kidnapping, murder
and shootouts across the country. The
pair met their end when police
sprayed the stolen 1934 Ford
Deluxe they were riding in with
130 rounds of bullets on May 23, 1934.
First, the car was towed to the local furniture store and fu-
neral parlor in downtown Arcadia, La. The car was bought
and sold by various promoters for use in sideshows at county
fairs and circuses. There were many imitators, but the orig-
inal car had various proofs of authenticity, including Bar-
row's torn and bloodstained shirt signed by his sister and
several letters attesting to its authenticity. Theses items are
on display, along with the bullet-riddled Ford, at Whiskey
Jack's Casino in Primm, Nev. The casino operator bought the
car, bloodstains and all, for $175,000 in 1973.
To say Elvis was a fan of the Cadillac is a bit of an under-
statement. The King gave away countless Cadillacs to fam-
ily, friends and hangers-on. At his funeral, a 1977
Miller-Meteor Landau Traditional Cadillac hearse trans-
ported Elvis' body, with a silver Cadillac limousine leading
the procession and 16 white Cadillac
limousines behind filled with mourners
heading to the Memphis Ceme-
tery.
His favorite Cadillac of all was
a pink 1955 Fleetwood 60 Special,
which replaced a pink 1954 model after
it caught fire due to faulty brake lining.
Elvis would own his pink Cadillac for
the rest of his life. He originally bought
it for his mother, but she never drove it.
The pink paint was mixed just for Elvis
and is known as 'Elvis Rose'. The Fleet-
wood has been on display since 1982 at
the Elvis Presley Automobile Museum at
Graceland.
Actor James Dean loved racing, and
his love ultimately caused his death. In a
horrific accident on his way to a race in Salinas, Calif.,
Dean's Porsche 550 Spyder lost control and flipped into a
gully, killing Dean and severely injuring his passenger. The
car dubbed 'Little Bastard' by the actor would be nothing but
bad luck after Dean's death.
Dean's friend and famous car customizer George Barris
took the remains of the Spyder and sold parts out to other
drivers. At least three car accidents occurred, one fatal, when
parts from Little Bastard failed in those cars.
The California Highway Patrol attempted to display
Dean's car as a warning to careless drivers, but more bad luck
followed. The first place it was displayed was a garage,
which promptly burned down (the fire did not damage the
Porsche). Then the car fell off its stand at a high school event
and broke a nearby stu-
dent's hip. While in tran-
sit, the Spyder fell off of
its trailer three times,
crushing a truck driver.
The car also injured two
thieves who tried to pry
out the steering wheel and
bloodstained seats.
Finally, the California
Highway Patrol had had
enough of Little Bastard
and attempted to return
the wreckage to Barris,
but it vanished mysteriously on route and hasn't been seen
since.
The bus that helped Rosa Parks launch her role in the Civil
Rights movement survives to this day. On December 1,
1955, the 42-year-old Parks boarded the bus after a long day
as a seamstress. When the "whites only" seats at the front of
the bus filled up, a white man asked her to get up so he could
sit. Parks refused, resulting in her arrest under Jim Crow
laws. Her arrest helped sparked the famed Montgomery Bus
Boycott, the first of many nonviolent protests staged
by marginalized black populations in America.
The General Motor's bus rusted in a field for 30
years before The Henry Ford Museum spent $300,000
restoring it. The bus is currently on display at the museum.
Visitors are welcome to sit in the bus, which is filled with
interactive dis-
plays and teach-
ing tools.

given to Presi-
dent John F.
Kennedy's navy
blue 1961 Lin-
coln 74A Con-
vertible. The
Lincoln featured
$200,000 worth
of modifica-
tions, but no
bulletproofing.
There were sev-
eral domes that fit over the top of the convertible, but it made
the cabin extremely hot and was also not bullet proof. It was
in this Lincoln that Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy,
the Texas governor and his wife sat in on November 22,
1963, when three shots fired from a book depository ended
the President's life.
Surprisingly, the Lincoln was kept in service another eight
years after the Kennedy's death. After the assassination, a
company called Hess & Eisenhardt added reinforcements
and safety measures that were missing when Kennedy rode
in the car. The Lincoln was outfitted with titanium armor
plating, bullet-resistant glass, and a permanent bulletproof
roof. The Lincoln was also painted black by incoming pres-
ident Lyndon Johnson, who thought the original navy blue
paint would be too reminiscent of the assassination. In 1967
the presidential limo was replaced, but the 1961 Lincoln was
kept in the fleet, doing less important duties until it retired
to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., in 1978. The
car is still on display there and is rumored to be haunted.
John Lennon made headlines across Britain when he
passed his driving test at the age of 25, the same month The
Beatles recorded Ticket to Ride, one of their biggest hits.
Within hours of the news breaking that Lennon now had his
own ticket to ride, luxury car dealers brought their products
directly to Lennon's front door. From an impressive array of
Maseratis, Jaguars and Aston Martins Lennon chose a Ferrari
300GT 2+2 Coupe in Azzuro blue.
In the late 1980s the Ferrari was sold, repainted and di-
vorced from its famous license plate number. It was recently
restored to its original specifications. Lennon's Ferrari will
be sold at auction later this month by the Bonhams auction
house, with a starting price of $270,000.
On June 17, 1994 all of America watched as O.J. Simpson
led the Los Angeles Police Department in an hour-long low
speed chase around the city. Simpson had missed the LAPD
deadline for turning himself in on charges of the double mur-
der of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. The
Bronco actually belonged to and was driven by Al Cowling,
Simpson's childhood friend. Simpson was eventually acquit-
ted of the murder charges, but is now in jail in Nevada on a
separate charge.
Simpson's legal outcomes are well known to the public,
but what about the infamous Ford Bronco? Cowling's
Bronco was bought for $75,000, nearly twice the original
value, by collector Michael Pulwer. In 2006, Simpson at-
tempted to sell the Bronco at a used-car lot as a bit in a pay-
per-view candid-camera prank show. The current owner of
the car is not known, but the Bronco is available as a rental
for parties and events.

ortgage rates have risen almost daily
since May
first. For most
of that time, the
rise has been
consistent and
gradual. And
then it spiked.
The last week of
June posted the
largest one-
week increase
in mortgage
rates since April
of 1987 more
than twenty-six
years ago.
According to
the final report
from Freddie
Mac for the
month of June,
rates on a thirty
year fixed mort-
gage rose to an
average of
4.46%. The
same report one
week earlier
claimed an av-
erage of 3.93%.
The one-week increase of 0.53% is the largest
single week rise since the week ending April
17, 1987.
A little perspective: In April of 1987 the av-
erage rate on the same 30 year fixed mortgage
was 9.83%. Not only were rates significantly
higher then, consumers had to pay a lot more
to get the loan. In April of 1987 the average
homeowner paid 2.3 points to obtain that
9.83% rate. Current homeowners are only
paying an average of 0.7 points to get the cur-
rent rate of 4.46%.
Maintaining a histor-
ical perspective,
mortgages are still
very inexpensive
both in terms of in-
terest rate and clos-
ing costs.
The ongoing trend
higher has been fu-
eled by the continu-
ing concern that the
Federal Reserve will
begin to taper off its
$85 billion per
month bond stimulus
program. It has long
been suspected that
without this program
mortgage rates
would be anywhere
from 1.0% - 1.5%
higher than they
have been. This as-
sessment is proving
to be extremely ac-
curate. The mere
speculation of a Fed
exit has
propelled
mortgage rates higher by about
1.1% since May 1. The
strategy among traders is
to not be the last one in
the room when the Fed
does exit. By exiting
ahead of the Fed, that
strategy is achieved.
Better than expected
economic news within the
United States com-
bined with concerns
over the liquidity of
Chinas banking sys-
tem have further
weighed down mortgage bonds. When these
bond-unfriendly events happened in the last
two years all it took was a negative headline
on Europes economy to act as a counterbal-
ance and support mortgage bonds, keeping
rates low.
Since the problems in Europe seem to be far
from over, it would seem a matter of time be-
fore the media talks about it again and mort-
gage bonds gain some support that is currently
absent. Of course, we dont know how long
that might take or how much higher mortgage
rates might move in the interim.
Although no one knows exactly what will
happen next or when it would potentially
occur, the most trusted analysts in the industry
are calling for one more dip in rates. Although
the all time lows that we had as recently as
May 1 appear to be gone for good, it does ap-
pear that we could see rates on a 30 year mort-
gage drop back below 4.0% before the end of
the summer. That dip, according to the experts,
will be very short lived and when its gone,
rates will continue their overall trend higher.
