I was recently sing in a meeng in Newcastle

(surprise, surprise!) during which we had the chance
to listen to what I considered a very thought
provokingpresentaonfromavisitorfromoutsidethe
Diocese. For the sake of the record this was not a
clergyonly meeng, and there were many lay
employeesoftheDioceseaswell.

I menon this because of the response that was

engenderedbysomeoftheparcipants.

What they heard our guest saysomemes

correctlyclearly caused them some degree of
discomfort, being forced to consider another
approach that simply wasnt within their realm of
thinking. Being made uncomfortable by what they
heard, or thought they heard, they moved from
discomfort to denial and rejeconand almost
hoslity.

Iwassurprisedbecausewhiletherewerepartsofthe
presentaon that I disagreed with, there was much
thatwasworthyoffurtherconsideraon.Iwasfurther
surprised because the presentaon wasnt meant to
be a dogmac pronouncement but rather an aempt
toplacesomeissuesindirectandsharpconsideraon
bytheaudience.

It is, unfortunately, always the way. Human nature is

such that certainty of belief is a desirable element in
life, and to have that challengedgently, or in any
other wayis confronng, and likely to generate
discomfort. Human nature is also such that when
faced with uncertainly and discomfort, we can also
oenbemovedtorejeconandhoslity.

The Gospel message is, of its nature, not intended to

make us comfortablein fact, the opposite is more

Below youll nd an arcle by Elizabeth Harrington,
Educaon Ocer of the Brisbane Liturgy Commission,
originally published in The Catholic Leader on 31st
August, 2008. What Elizabeth said then remains true
today, and I commend the arcle to your prayerful
reecon:

One of the central principles expressed in the

Constuon on the Sacred Liturgy issued in 1963
concernsthepresenceofChristinliturgy:

Christ is present in the sacrice of the Mass, not only

in the person of his minister, but especially under the
euchariscelements.Heispresentinhisword,sinceit
ishehimselfwhospeakswhentheholyScripturesare
read in the Church. He is present when the Church
praysandsings,forhepromised:Wheretwoorthree
are gathered together in my name, there I am in the
midstofthem.(CSL#7)

Fortyve years on, [Editor: Its now y years on] does

our celebraon of Mass demonstrate that Christ is
presentinthesefourways?

During the eucharisc prayer people give their

aenon to the words prayed on their behalf by the
presider. We sing the responses (memorial
acclamaon, great amen) because this is a high point
in the celebraon. The sacred elements are handled
with care and respect by the ministers of communion
and by all the faithful. The vessels are craed from
materials that are solid and noble. Everything speaks
of honour and reverence for Christ present in the
consecratedbreadandwine.

DoweshowthesamehonourandreverenceforChrist
present in the scriptures when they are read? If we
reallybelievethatitisChristhimselfwhospeakswhen
the word is proclaimed, we must give our full
aenon to this part of the liturgy too. A sermon
given by Caesarus, Archbishop of Arles, early in the
6thcenturycouldaseasilybeaddressedtoustoday:

I have a queson for you, brothers and sisters. Which

do you think more important the word of God or the
body of Christ? If you want to answer correctly, you
must tell me that the word of God is no less important
than the body of Christ! How careful are we, when the
body of Christ is distributed to us, not to let any bit of it
fall to the ground from our hand! But we should be just
as careful not to let slip from our hearts the word of
God that is addressed to us, by thinking or speaking of
something else.

And what of Christ present in those with whom we

worship, the Body of Christ? Do we treat them too
with respect and reverence? Hospitality is everyones
ministry,notjusttheroleofthegreeters.Weallneed
to be present to those with whom we worship to
acknowledge their presence, to share the sign of
peacegraciously,tositwiththerestofthecommunity
and not on our own at the back, to join
wholeheartedlyintheresponses,gesturesandsinging
ofthecelebraon.

Acons speak louder than words. Lex orandi, lex

credendi: the law of prayer is the law of belief. It
should be clear in what we do and how we do it that
we truly believe that Christ is present, not only in the
sacredelementsbutalsointheassembly,intheword
andinthepriestpresider,whenweworshiptogether.
likely to be true! The message of the Good News of
the Kingdom will oen require us to reexamine
closely held values and beliefs when confronted with
thewordsofJesusandourreaconwillhopefullybe
somethingotherthanhoslityandrejecon.

I would also like to suggest that if that is the way we

respond to the message of the Gospel, then that is
alsotheexamplewearecalledtofollowinotherparts
of our life. Rather than simply rejecng an opinion
oered by others in good faith because it doesnt t
our belief system, we are calledI would strongly
argueto engage with those who hold diering
opinions, to recognise in them their basic humanity,
and entering into respecul dialogue in the hope of
allowingtheTruthtoemergefromthatprocess.Itcan

So that we might receive Communion in a t and
properway,pleasebeawareofthefollowing:

When we process forward to receive Communion,

we have been asked by the Australian Bishops to
adopt a common and unied gesture of reverence
before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow
of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other
formofreverence,includingagenuecon,should
thereforebeavoided.
Communion by selfinncon (selfdipping) is
neverpermied,sincewereceiveCommunionand
never take Communion. Please refrain from this
inappropriateacon.
We regret that we do not have the physical
facilies to oer communion while kneeling, and
respecully ask you to refrain from kneeling to
receive Communion while part of the procession,
since this is contrary to the nature of the
Communion procession itself. Your cooperaon in
honouring this request is very much appreciated,
andwethankyouforyourconsideraon.
