Follow standard books, stress on understanding things than memorizing them. Solve objective type (especially numericals) questions as much as possible. No need to cover the entire syllabus. Keep preparing your personal notes as you cover topics. Do not practice questions in rough. You may need to see the solutions at the time of revision. Go through previous year papers (say last 10 years) to check your knowledge and note the distribution of different topics. Revision is one of the most important step of the preparation process (around 20 days before examination). Follow your notes during this time and solve time-bound question papers (preferrably last year papers). Take a chill-pill on the day before exam. Relax!!!!!!!!!! Do not make any guesses in the paper. If possible, try to eliminate the choices by minimum calculation/analysis. Even you find the paper tough, DO NOT panic. It'll be hard for all Junta... Rohit Kumar Gupta : AIR 39, EE, GATE 2008

M.Tech.(EE), Power & Control, IIT-Kanpur B.Tech. : Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)

B.Tech. CGPA : 9.264 B.Tech. Placement : Accenture MTech Placement : GE (Generic Electricals)

MTech Thesis: Sensorless direct torque control of interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (sponsored by GE)

Q. When and why did you decide to go for M.Tech.? A: When toh tha BTech 2nd year. Aur why ka aisa hai ki padosi (seniors) nikal gaye the IITs me. Their experience was quite good, so I thought of taking GATE exam in 3rd year only. Also, my college masti was not yet over.

Q. When did you start preparing for GATE in full swing? A: Basically I had prepared for GATE in vacation times like summer vacation after 4th sem in which I had studied all the courses done till then. After 3rd year I had done training, and I studied for GATE in the remaining holidays. 40-50% of the stuffs in the course of GATE are covered till third year in AMU. Q. How many hours a day on an average did you devote to GATE preparation in this period? A: Prescription : din me do baar -1 ghanta subah, 1 ghanta sham, GATE ka kaam tamam. last 20 days, 3-4 hours.

Q. What was your mode of preparation? A: Self-study I had got some materials of Brilliant Tutorials from my seniors, but mazaa nahi aaya. So, also referred GK publishers, but did find a lot of mistakes. So, I relied on the books only and solved questions from that.

Q. Did the college curriculum interfere with GATE preparation? If yes, how did you manage it? A: No problem. Mostly, I had prepared during the vacations. So, not much probs!!...waise bhi course work aur GATE ka syllabus common hi padta hai...

Q. Did you appear for GATE in your pre-final year? Do you think it's a good idea to do so?

A: Yes, I did and I secured a rank of 199. I think it's a very good idea. It gives a first time experience and really help a lot in building a good strategy. Strategy in the sense that which topics to emphasize on. Also, one gets mentally prepared for the exam.

Q. What was your way of studying/ what should be the way of studying? A: kahani padne se kuch nahi hota!!...sirf theory padne se aap sab kuch nahi samajhte ho..Solving problems clean your basics. There are sufficient numericals in books and one should try as many as one can. Some questions in GATE are directly asked from the books. One should go through the solved examples in books because one may come across several important points in the process. Also, I had analysed previous three question papers, which gave me a pretty good idea of my preparation, the kind of Qs that are asked and the areas to stress upon.

Q. How to prepare for GATE in a short period? A: It reminds me of the case of my friend, his CPI was not very good and he had only one month left. I suggested him to read theory from GK publishers, provided him my lecture notes. If you have doubts, then you can refer to books. Give emphasis to problem solving.

Q. What would you suggest about the last days, say, one week preparation? A: Naya bikul chodh do...Revise as much as you can. Because one forgets several things that one might have studied.

Q. Having so many options, why did you choose IIT-Kanpur? A: I had applied to power and control in: IITK: direct admission IITD: got interview call. It used to be like this- if you have more than 8.5 CGPI and reasonably high GATE score then you get direct admission. But they changed their strategy at the last moment because many people had the tendency to leave their seats offered as direct admission."I want to cut down the wings of unsincere person" in the words of Dr. Bhim Singh, faculty IITD (the man with 400+ IEEE publications). Khair, I left it because as my seniors told me IITB and IITK stand better than IITD in all aspects. IITB: direct admission in 3rd list. But, by then I had decided for IITK. There is not much difference between IITK and IITB in terms of placement and academics. Although, in IITB the professors give more emphasis on thesis (in POWER AND CONTROL) compared to IITK. The difference mainly lies in the lifestyle, and I thought I was more suited to IITK way.

Q. Are you satisfied with your decision? A: Yes, I am satisfied hare and I got my dream company (GE) in the first week of placement. What else can one ask for!!!!!!!!!!!!! After MTech I plan to go to AMU and talk to teachers and students and make them aware of the prospects of MTech, which will encourage more people.

Q. What are your future career plans? A: Abhi to 3-4 saal job karna hai, after gaining some work experience, I'll go either for a PhD or an MBA depending on the scenario. There is a growing trend of dual masters currently and that also with some work ex. The common notion is that one goes for a PhD only if one wants to go in teaching and reserch, but aisa nahi hai, industries too prefer PhDs for high managerial posts. Also, reserch and development sectors of companies are growing and hence the demand for PhD. Internship in MTech is a very good oppurtunity. I did my internship at GE and extended that project as my MTech thesis here, although I had to go through several administrative barriers to do so. It gave me a very good exposure and a very good understanding of the corporate world and currently I am placed in GE itself.

Q. How would you compare M.Tech from IIT against Post-graduation from abroad? A: Masters is job-oriented here in IITs, MTech people have better job prospects than BTechs. MS bahar wala mamla hai, unhe yahan aane ke baad job me problem aati hai, jabki India me IIT se MTech ki value kaafi zyada hai. Agar bahar hi settle hona hai, ya PhD ka irada haii to MS karo.

Q. Who should go for an MTech? A: Any one with an interest in subjects and having a technical orientation must go for MTech. I have seen BTechs from IIT getting motivated for an MTech after 2-3 years of job, once they realize the value of MTech in the corporate world.

Q. Had you covered all the topics in GATE syllabus? A: No, I had left signals and systems, analog electronics, microprocessors and electromagnetics. 1-2 Qs (each) are asked from microprocessors, electromagnetics and signals and systems, so I had left these. I didnot intend to leave analog electronics but it was very vast and I did not have much time left for that in the end.

Q. Any other message? A: All budding engineers should take MTech seriously. I would suggest an MTech directly after BTech. Then you are in a better and more mature state to decide about your future. Log IIT ke naam se darte hain academics ke karan, but yahan pe kaafi enjoyment bhi hota hai, in fact much more than BTech. Package me 200% ka increment to hota hi hai, work quality me bhi improvement hota hai. You stand a better chance in terms of promotion too. Generally people prefer to go into PSUs after BTech. MTech ke baad PSU me jaana is not a good idea kyunki wahan kaafi general type ka kaam rehta hai. Some people have the complex that BTechs of IIT are better than MTechs since they have been brought up in a conducive environment from the beginning. But its not completely true, what we have gained is also valuable and we do stand at par with them. M.Tech stands for Masters of Technology. But in country like ours (which lies much low specially in higher education), M.Tech is not considered as a HOT opportunity just as MBA. There are lots of myths about M.Techs. Specially if you are having a job. There is so much stigma around us against M.Tech. I will like to share some general myths about M.Tech at IITs and provide suitable facts:

Myth : M.Techs at IITs are as Good as B.Techs !!

Fact : M.Techs at IITs are as good as B.Techs because:

1. They are taught by the same professors who teaches B.Tech students. In fact some of the senior faculties teach only M.Tech guys.

2. When IITs were formed, there main focus was to produce good engineers as they were very much needed by newly freed India for its technological advancement. But after so many years, after producing so many world class engineers making India self abundant, IITs are going to the next step. During last 10-15 years IITs have shift there focus from producing mere engineers to masters in their field.

3. In fact even some of the courses done by btechs and mtechs are same and for some of the courses you will attend with the btech guys. So if the quality is good for them, its good for mtechs too.

Myth : After M.Tech, only option left is Teaching.

Fact : People have this perception that after doing an mtech, the only thing you can do is teaching. Teaching is last option left after doing M.Tech. (if you have done really bad and have spend 2 years in just passing time). Mtech people do get placed in Amazon, Adobe, Morgan Stanley, Oracle, Citrix, Cisco, Mircrosoft etc. Some of these companies hire more mtechs than btechs. Placement in IITs depend very much on your caliber than on anything else. But if you want a relaxed, stable, tension free (also boring, monotonous and easy) life, teaching is always an option.

But there is a catch. There is no separate placement for mtechs and btechs. This means an mtech has to compete with btech for placements. But if you have done your mtech seriously you can still compete with them. A lot of mtech guys do get better placements than btechs !

Myth : M.Tech is all relax and fun two years.

Fact : Most people think mtechs dont have to study much and they can relax for 2 years. This is not entirely true though it could be partially true. Heres how: Courses in IITs can be divided into roughly two categories:

1) Courses that are really very good but at the same time extremely tough. It is very difficult to get a good grade in such courses but you learn a lot. It is in these type of courses that you get the real advantage of being at IIT.

2) Courses that are very easy but mostly useless. You can easily get a good grade in these courses without much effort but they will hardly do any value addition.

So if you mostly take easy courses in your mtech career, you can end up with a good CGPA without working hard at all. But then your mtech would be a waste and you will struggle to get a good placement. On the other hand, you can take the tough but good courses, you will learn a lot, but believe me, it becomes very hectic. These courses will make you work so hard that GATE studies will look like a piece of cake. But at the end, it will be worth it. Same logic applies to your choice of project. As such how tough or how easy your mtech is will depend on how much hard work you are willing to do. Unfortunately, most people take the useless easy courses, dont work hard at all during mtech and then say doing mtech in IITs was a bad idea.

Overall M.Tech from IITs is a good option. Competetion is less here as compared to MBA. Also Mtech from IITs is cheap. It will cost about 35K per semester for mtech in IITs. This includes your tution fees, hostel fees, mess dues, etc. But this is very less as compared to IIMs.In this amount you get to live in a quality IIT environment, and get to use all the facilities like labs, sports facilities, internet etc. Plus you get a stipend of Rs. 8000 per month (i think this could increase this year). So that almost covers your fees. Compare this with doing MS in a US university or an MBA. Hope i have cleared lots of your doubts. If you still have, ask your doubts as comments and you will get a sincere reply !! Sankalp 1. if you want to secure a job in Core companies like ,

TRANSCO , ZENCO,HYDEL POWER PLANTS,POWER GRIDS, SUBSTATIONS , etc.... then you should be well prepared in all your core subjects .See , for this , you no need to go for any Special coaching .
