Welcome

July 14 2013

Welcome to Unley Park Baptist today. It is great to have you with us. If you are new to Unley Park, we appreciate that it can be daunting to walk into a new church, so as much as we can, we want to help you feel at home here. In the pew in front of you please find a black folder that contains a white care card for you to complete. There is also a "Welcome Pack" available for you that, among other things, has a special Care Card for you to record your visit and for us to follow up any requests you make. All Care Cards should be "posted" as you leave the church, in the locked box on the table by the "Baptistry Door".

Just a Minute
What a great few weeks for all sports loving Aussies! We have had tennis at Wimbledon, three Rugby Union Tests between Australia and the British & Irish Lions, State of Origin Rugby League, the start of a new Ashes series in England, the Adelaide Thunderbirds playing the QLD Firebirds on Sunday in the grand final of the ANZ Championship, Trans-Tasman Netball League, and of course we are in the middle of another scintillating AFL season! As I write this I am watching England open the innings in the first Test at Trent Bridge. The British are on top of the world at the moment. They won the Rugby Union series, a Scot won Wimbledon [Andy Murray] and they are saying its just a matter of the English cricket team turning up and they will win the Ashes! I remember being in England in 2005 during an Ashes series. We were invincible with Warnie, McGrath, Gilchrist, Haden, Langer, Ponting and the rest of them! Everywhere we stayed I made sure they knew I was an Aussie and we were here to flog them in the cricket. I exchanged email addresses with many of them so I could write to them when it was all over and humbly remind them what a big mistake they made sending us to Van Diemens Land 200 years before!!. But the unthinkable happened. We lost the series 2-1. Fortunately I was back in Australia before the end of the last test and pandemonium broke out in the UK. However, I did get a few emails telling me thats why we were sent to Australia as convicts so long ago..because we couldnt play cricket! Paul had a competitive edge to him. Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win.. I do not run uncertainly or box like one who hits only air. [1 Corinthians 9:24,26] I personally hope we do the unthinkable and beat the Poms 5 -0 in the cricket, but there is something much more important than that! It is that Christians everywhere take our faith seriously. That we do not carry on like shadow boxers who never really fight; who look like we are running but never race, who think that all that matters is that we are on Gods Team and yet we never run to win! As I write, we have just taken a wicket. The English cricket captain is out! The Aussies have come to play and by the looks of them, they want to win! As we go into another week lets not just turn u p. It is just possible that God can use us to have a win for the Kingdom of God this week. He can bring about patience under pressure, faith in uncertainty, courage in times of fear, forgiveness where hurt, boldness in place of timidity, prayer instead of selfsufficiency and humility in our success. Thats only the start of what God wants to do!! Lets run to win! God Bless Neil
