A.2. Read the following passage : According to an old Chinese legend , silk was discovered by the Empress Hsi Ling shi , at about 2700 B.C. Trying to find out what was eating the imperial mulberry trees , she found a fat worm like creature munching the leaves and spinning shiny cocoons. She accidentally dropped a cocoon into hot water , and at once a long , shiny mass of threads began to unravel from the cocoon. The creatures were silkworms. For the next 3,000 years , only the Chinese knew how to spin and use silk . Other countries asked for the secret , but the Chinese refused to divulge it . Eventually the Chinese monopoly was broken by the cunning of two Christian monks, sent by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian at about AD 550 . The monks used heavy bamboo sticks as staffs , and inside these they hid samples of the silkworm moths eggs and some seeds of the mulberry trees on which they fed. As a result , the silk industry became established in Europe. A.2.1. On the basis of your reading of the passage above , answer the following questions.
