Renaissance of the Korndorfer-starting method

Pastdifficult
Formerly the Korndorfer starting method was complicated and expensive 3 MV panels for the 3 switches method 5 MV cables with 10 set of sealing ends Difficult engineering and design for coordination of panels, transformer, motor, driven load, cables and sealing ends. Large space requirement

Todaysimple
The KAE motor starter now makes the Korndorfer starting method compact, economic, compatible and customer-friendly. Two of the 3 switches are included together with the autotrans in the compact starter unit. A PLC coordinates the complete control and supervision including the third external mains cb. We care for design and coordination. You save time, space, investment and installation cost.

The upper chart shows the starting torque provided by the motor for direct on line starting (black curve). The purple graph depicts the torque required by the driven machine. The coloured graphs in between illustrate the motor torque for different starting voltages. The motor torque must always be higher than the counter torque. The chart in the middle represents the respective starting times. The lower chart shows the relation between starting torque and starting time. The purple line is the minimum torque (required by the driven machine).

The different starting voltages result into different starting currents (see chart on top and in the middle). Black is the starting current for direct on line start, coloured are the different starting voltages with autotransformer (points in upper chart and graphs in the central chart). The different start currents result in different voltage drops in the mains power supply. The lower chart shows the mains voltage during motor start up (black graph for direct on line start, coloured graphs for different starting voltages).

In order to compare the autotransformer start with other common start methods (starting reactor, electronic soft starter, etc.) charts for starting current and mains voltage are shown for these starting methods accordingly. The charts on top and in the middle show that the starting current is higher, this results in a larger voltage drop in the mains power supply (lower chart) compared to the start with autotransformer. Therefore the compact starter is the ultimate starting method in order to reduce the current at motor start up and to avoid voltage drop in the mains power supply network.

start step 1

start step 2

start step 3

During acceleration the motor current (M) is the addition of mains current (N) and star point current (S). The low mains current (N) results in a small mains voltage drop. The high motor current (M) ensures a high torque of the motor.

The star point switch will be opened after the motor has reached its rated speed and before the by-pass switch closes. There is a transient change over without interruption of the motor power supply. The motor does not lose speed. High current peaks and voltage drop, as known in Y/A starting resulting from open transition and system immanent phase shift, cannot occur.

After the by-pass switch is closed, the start-up is finished. The motor is ready for operation under load.
