BFAR warns: Red Tide possible at Maqueda Bay

NMP launches online registration for alumni

TACLOBAN CITY The National Maritime Polytechnic launches an online registration for its graduates who want to become members of the NMP Alumni Association. It aims to generate a registry of NMP alumni from which can be tapped consultants and resource persons in development of NMP courses as well as a pool of guest lecturers and assessors. The facility is integrated in the NMP alumni corner menu which can be accessed in the agencys web portal www.nmp.gov.ph. The system requires trainee ID number for the alumni to register. It matches the trainee ID number with the alumni database and automatically display the full name and birthday of qualified registrant. Successful registrants are added into the registry of alumni found in the alumni corner page. The said corner page also contains the training schedule, alumni photo gallery, downloadable, certificate verification and e-registration (under construction). The training schedule tab displays the NMP courses, schedules and available slots. The alumni photo gallery contains various photos on NMP activities participated by trainees. Alumni who would like to share their photos may send request to the NMP web administrator who will upload the photos after seeking approval from authorized NMP ocial. DOH records revealed that from January up to this week, there were 1,740 dengue fever cases admitted in the hospitals, of which 968 were in Leyte, 186 in Samar, 288 in Northern Samar, 204 in Eastern Samar, 60 in Southern Leyte and 34 in Biliran. Tales of stuffs that matters

The joke of course elicited an uproar of deserved laughter (and why shouldnt it?) but when it was revealed that it was a true-to-life story, jesting turned into frustration and disappointment. The Philippines is perhaps not the only country in the world, or even in Asia, who has the disenchanting stupidity of electing trapos into ofce. The conventional misconception throws the blame at our equally trapo electorate for being the ones who elected them in the rst place. I say though that there is a far greater villain for such malady our Constitution. Let us review our lesson in Constitutional Law. What does it take really to become a member of the prestigious Congress of the Philippines? Know that we have a bicameral Congress, that

is to say it is composed of two houses: the upper and the lower house. The upper house is referred to as the Senate, while the lower house the House of Representatives. Believe me when I say though that it was not intended as a pun that the latter should be called the lower house because of its lower class of legislators. The delineation imposes then separate requirements to be eligible to run for whichever position. If you seek to run for the more prestigious nomenclature of senator, all you need is to be a natural-born citizen of this God-forsaken country, 35 years old at least on the day of the polls, able to read and write, a registered voter and a resident of the country for at least 2 years the day before the voting. You may think I missed out a requirement or two but

Leyte Board Member Merilo proposes giving of incentives to bgay ocials

TACLOBAN CITY Leyte first district Board Member Gina Merilo is set to introduce an ordinance providing incentives to barangay officials who would serve for three consecutive terms. Merilo, in an interview, said that barangay officials, particularly the chairman, need to receive incentive from the government in recognition to their services rendered while they were on their posts. We would prioritize giving the incentive to our barangay chairman in the entire province of Leyte. But as we were able to have sufficient fund, we would also include the barangay councilors, she said. Merilo upon creating this ordinance would propose that an equivalent of onemonth salary to be received by the officials in every term of office they have. The incentive would be given three times. The first would be given at the provincial government, second at the local government they belong to and thirdly is at the barangay where they live in, the legislator explained. The official said that almost all of the barangay officials want to have this incentive. Merilo said she would be coordinating this ordinance with Margarita Cari, who is the president of the Association of Barangay Chairmen (ABC) of Leyte. Councilor Uy urges colleagues at city council to serve the people

TACLOBAN CITY Councilor Jerry Uy said that they should serve for the interests of the poor people of the city. Uy, who topped the race for council seats during the May 13 elections, said that elected public officials of the city need to give back to the people the necessary services that they rightfully deserves. In uplifting the lives of the poor people of the city, Uy urges his colleagues to enact ordinances that will reduce poverty incidence in the city and help create employment opportunities. The councilor disclosed that it has been his ardent desire to serve the Taclobanons since he was first elected in 2010. Uy added that in a larger perspective, aiming for a better life is everybodys concern. Every Taclobanon should work together and be objective on evaluating the programs and projects of the city government, he said. Undoubtedly, we only live once in this world. Any challenges in life, whether personal or not, must be faced squarely. Let us be united in pursuing a common legislative agenda that will improve the lives of our people, especially the marginalized sector. We must be a Sangguniang Panlungsod for the poor, Uy said. Poverty alleviation programs are needed to improve the socio-economic condition of the people. Economic, social and cultural rights, like civil and political rights, constitutes a set of rights that human beings must possess in order to enjoy a life with dignity, he addeds a public servant and as a lawyer, Uy assured his unwavering commitment to the Taclobanons that he will continue to share his legal skills, knowledge and expertise as well as continue his advocacies on good governance, transparency, accountability, public participation and the rule of law on his second term of office.
