1. An electric train initially moving at 25 km/h accelerates to 35 km/h in 20 s. Find its average acceleration in m/s2. (0.14 m/s2) 2. A rocketship in space moves with a constant acceleration of 9.8 m/s2. If it starts from rest, how long will it take to reach a velocity one-tenth that of light (vlight = 3.00 x 108 m/s)? (3.1 x 106 s) 3. A plane travelling at 200 km/h[N] accelerates at the rate2 of 5.0 km/h/s[N] for 1.0 min. What is its final velocity? (5.0 x 10 km/h [N]) 4. A train travelling at 100 km/h slows down with a uniform deceleration of 0.60 m/s2. How long does it take to stop? (46 s) 5. A motorist travelling at 90 km/h applies his brakes and comes to rest with uniform deceleration in 20 s. Calculate the acceleration in m/s2. (1.3 m/s2) 6. An airplane taking off from an airfield has a run of 370 m. If it starts from rest, moves with constant acceleration, and makes the run in 30 s, with what velocity, in kilometres per hour, does it take off? (89 km/h) 7. A bobsled, starting from rest, has a constant acceleration of 2.0 m/s2,. a) How fast is it going after 5.0 s? (10 m/s) b) How far has it travelled in 5.0 s? (25 m) c) What is its average velocity in the first 5.0 s? (5.0 m/s) d) How far has it travelled by the time its speed has reached 40 m/s? (4.0 x 102 m)
8. While driving her car, Mrs. Jones sees an obstruction in the road. It

takes her 0.80 s to react and put her foot on the brake. Her car is travelling at 25 m/s. a) How far will the car travel before she puts her foot on the brake? (20 m) b) If, when the brake is applied, the car decelerates at a uniform rate of 9.3 m/s2, what is the total displacement of the car? (54 m)

9. A boy in a wagon starts down a hill 90 m long with an initial velocity of 1.2 m/s, reaching the bottom of the hill in 0.50 min. Calculate his acceleration (assumed to- be uniform) and his velocity at the bottom 2 of the hill. (0.12 m/s , 4.8 m/s)
10. A rocket-driven sled running on a straight, level track is used to investigate the physiological effects of rapid accelerations on humans. One such sled can attain a velocity of 1600 km/h in 1.8 s, starting from rest. a) Assuming that the acceleration is uniform, what is its value in m/s2? (2.5 x 102 m/s2) b) Express the acceleration in (a) in terms of g, where g = 9.8 m/s2. (25g)

c)Under the last 2.00 km of the track there is a trough of water. The

"brakes" of the rocket consist of a scoop that displaces water from the trough, stopping the sled. Assuming that the sled stops at the end of the trough, what is the deceleration of the sled, expressed in terms of g? (-5g)

11. A balloonist jumped from a balloon at an altitude of 23 300 m and fell with an unopened parachute for 178 s. The balloonist was travelling at 62.6 m/s when the parachute opened. a) What was the average acceleration? (0.352 m/s 2 ) b) Why was the value of the average acceleration less than that for gravity?
12. A bullet is fired straight up with a muzzle velocity of 460 m/s. How long will it take it to reach its highest point and how high will that be? (The air resistance may be neglected.) (47 s, 1.1 x 10 4 m)
13. A stone is thrown straight down from the top of a cliff with an initial

velocity of 6.0 m/s. It reaches the bottom in 3.0 s. How high is the cliff? (62 m)

ground 5.0 s later. What is the height of the window from the ground? (73 m)
