CHAPTER: 16
TRUE DISCOUNT
16.1 DEFINITION
Suppose A has borrowed money from B. A sum of Rs 160 is due 4 years hence. But the borrower A wants to clear off the
debt right now, i.e. 4 years before the due date. Hence, A will have to pay definitely less than Rs 160. In fact, the money
which amounts to Rs 160 after 4 years at a standard or agreed rate of interest, should be the amount paid by A to clear off
his debt right now.
Let the rate of interest in this case be 15% per annum. Then Rs 100 now becomes 160 after 4 years at the rate of 15% per
annum. So, A pays Rs 100 right now, it is as good as to pay Rs 160 after 4 years from right now.
The sum due is called the Amount. The money to be paid right now is called the Present Worth (PW) of the sum due. The
difference between the amount and the present worth is called the True Discount.
So, here true discount for A = 160 - 100 = Rs 60
[i.e. interest on Rs 100 for 4 years at 15% per annum)
So, True Discount = the interest on the present worth (PW) for the time which will elapse before the debtor bill is due to
be discharged.

(k) Installments to pay-off debt

Suppose borrower is to pay a sum of Rs P due after T years hence, but he wants to pay through equal installments at an
agreed interval (may be quarterly, monthly, half-yearly or yearly) to discharge off his debt in T years.
Hence, through equal installment payments, the debt of Rs P due in T years is cleared in T years.
